You can apply a newer patch to a particular product e.g. Messaging Server and be at the same equivalent level as the newer Communications Suite release.
The patch version is therefore important to determine the level of each point-product e.g.
Calendar 6.3: showrev -p | grep ics5
Communications Express: showrev -p | grep uwc
Instant Messaging Server: showrev -p | grep SUNWiim
Some products have their own version command e.g.
Messaging Server: ./imsimta version
Convergence: ./iwcadmin -V
Delegated Administrator: ./commadmin -V

• Sun Communications Suite 6 U2 Training Workshop coming to USA

JavaWorkshops.com is going to have 9 public classes over the next few months in the USA. I just wanted to pass this along. I was luck enough to attend their Directory Workshop in London and it was amazing. The instructor is a former Netscape professional services wizard and was super sharp and the class was loads of fun - ESPECIALLY since most of it was hands on time learning, setting the servers up and so forth - FROM SCRATCH!!!
I wanted to pass this along as I have seen people ask for Communications Suite 6 Training in the states - THIS IS NOT A FORMAL TRAINING, IT'S A ROLL YOUR SLEEVES UP AND GET DIRTY WITH THE SOFTWARE WORKSHOP, MUCH BETTER THAN STANDARD TRAINING!!!
I met the founder Karim and he is such a cool guy, he even took my feedback about the class / labs and made a lab based around my feedback. WOW, these guys really listen to their customers! My colleague and I are going to the Chicago training and wanted to let others know before the class is sold out. He ONLY allows 8 students per public class so hurry and get signed up.
The web site is http://www.javaworkshops.com. Hope to see you guys at the training workshop in July :-)

I took one of their classes in London and it was an excellent class - very hands on, 2 - 3 hrs of lecture a day, and lots of hardware, lab time!!!. I also saw an email from Jesse T who said he knows the instructor and said he was EXCELLENT. Jesse's response was in the ims-alias this morning I think. Trust me you wont regret it. Also I saw another email saying he is going to have a workshop in Europe, so if you are interested, let them know :-)

Does anybody know how to setup step-by-step SSL and SSO on SUN's
Communications Suite? I am using [or rather testing] The following
products: Calendar Server 6, Messaging Server 6, Communications Express
6, Web Server 6.1 and Access Manager 7. All on just one machine.
I have managed to get Single Sign-On working fine with Comm Express but
I can not seem to manage to get it working with SSL. I mainly want to
run https via Comm Express to access messenger and calendar. This works
great on http.
I have also read [and read] SUN's documentation about setting up SSO
with SSL but that is a bit confusing [to say the least]. I found in the
Comm Express Admin Guide:
Messaging SSO is not supported in SSL.
Work around
To support Messaging SSO with SSL perform the following steps:
How to enable Messaging SSO with SSL
1. Configure Web Server in SSL mode.
2. Configure Communications Express for SSL port of Web Server.
3. Set uwcauth.ssl.enabled=true.
4. Set uwcauth.https.port to SSL port of Web Server.
5. Enable Messaging Server in SSL mode.
6. Set the webmail.port in uwcconfig.properties to SSL port of
Messaging Server.
7. Provide messagingsso.ims.url to Non SSL port of Messaging Server
8. Install the Certificate Management Server root Certificate Authority
(CMS root CA) on both Web Server and Messaging Server.
9. Restart Web Server.
10. Provide a value to local.webmail.sso.ims.verifyurl pointing to Non
SSL port of Messaging Server.
11. Restart Messaging Server.
The problem here is what is meant by "CMS root CA" ?? of course when
searched on Google I get the Communications Express Admin Guide lol :^)
Anyways I got a Thawte Cert for the web server, this seems to work fine
and the "uwc" login page works fine too. Now what do I do to get
messenger to work? Get another Cert?? It says "install CMS root CA on
both Web Server and Messenger" how??? maybe I need to create self
signed certificates??
I need to have calendar working too, there is a SSL setup for calendar
but will it run with SSO uwc??
I also run into the problem in the Admin Guides of using "iplanet
console" to manage certs and some other features, what is this? of
course I can't find it or SUN has changed its name [but still suggests
to use it].
Well I am a bit frustrated, maybe something I am missing or not read
correctly [my apologies]. I do not think this to be uncommon to want an
integrated mail and calendar application running SSO and SSL. So if
anybody knows an easy step-by-step setup or a link to such a thing
please let me know. I am not new to Unix nor Solaris but definitely
know little about Communications Suite [or maybe SUN has changed that
name too :^(
Thanks in Advance

Thanks Jay but I think we are now digressing. I am
sorry if it sounds like I am complaining, I just want
to figure out to how to make this work. Someone must
know how to set this up step-by-step. I think I
understand the difference between SSO and SSL and
that they are not interchangeable, I want both to
work.
If I was to use only ME then I don't need SSO, I
would just use it with SSL, which I still have not
figured out how to do, because I do not know where to
find iPlanet Console???Iplanet Console may be found in your Directory SErver install. command, "startconsole:
You do not need to use Console for anything.
You can use "certutil" to manipulate certificates, should you prefer to do that.
You can use "configutil" to change config settings.
do you know where it should
be, is there a default path? Does it install with ME?It's really the Directory Server console. You have it.
Can I download it?
I also understand that the benefit of SSO is not to
have to sign on several times and that in my case we
are talking about 3 different pieces of software, CE,
ME and Calendar [plus Access Manager].
I am running my system with SSO on CE, ME and
Calendar and it works great. I wish to offer this
setup so my users can access both mail and calendar
via one web interface, just like hotmail, yahoo etc.
I also want remote users to access the same web
b interface via SSL [their passwds will have some
level of security]. As usual, you need to take these one step at a time. First, get your SSL working. Then get CE working. Then follow the documentation to get SSO working. It does work. Many others have been successful getting it all to work.
The reason I asked about possibly another SUN product
is because I have setup other products like IMP and
Zimbra via SSL and they work in this fashion.
I am fairly sure this is possible with these SUN
products but I am still trying to figure out how to
do it.
This is why I am asking if anybody has any experience
setting up this combination of products in this
fashion, please let me know or guide me in the right
direction.
Thanks in advance

• Communications Suite 5

Hi,
We already have DS 6.2 deployed in our organization. We have moved from NIS to LDAP. Now we want to deploy Communications Suite 5.
I have been testing with the "Deployment Example: Sun Java Communications Suite 5 on a Single Host" (http://docs.sun.com/source/820-0086/index.html)
We built our own scripts for creating user accounts in LDAP.
I'm wondering if it's a requirement to Deploy the Communications Services Delegated Administrator 6.4 and SUN Java System Access Manager?
I'm also wondering if there are any tips for deploying Communications Suite 5 with Native LDAP and which user attributes need to be added for Communications Suite to work.

Delegated Administrator (DA) is not required but it does make life much simpler in terms of adding users to JCS.
DA has a CLI and a web interface so one could build out provisioning scripts using the CLI interface to get the best of both worlds.
If you don't want to use DA you do not have to but I would recommend looking at the Schema Guide (http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4437) to figure out which attributes are required, etc
Access Manager is used if you want to provide single sign on for the web client Communications Express in terms of Messaging Server/Calendar Server.
If you don't need/want Communications Express then AM is optional for sure.
Delegated Administrator does need Access Manager I believe although I could be wrong about that off the top of my head.
It also depends on the schema choice you make (http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-0639) in terms of what tools are available for managing your users in JCS.

• Some general questions about Sun Java Communications Suite

Hello Everybody,
We are a small group of individuals (2 Java developers and 1 Linux expert and Web Application developer), located in Germany.
We are fully new to Solaris and Sun Java Communications Suite and know, that its a highly professional software system for large scale deployment. However we plan to install (64 Bit version) and manage it in a small network environment, consisting of a Server (4 GB RAM, RAID 5, AMD Dual CPU) based on Solaris 10 (X86) and *20* clients based on Win XP, Solaris and Linux.
Its a network of a non-profit organization, providing social services to local society.
At clients we will use the Communications Express and the needed services are: Calander, Mail and Address book. (no need of Outlook Connector, Instant Messaging, Document Management, etc.)
Our long-term aim is - after learning of professional architecting, deployment and management of Communications Suite - to provide integration and development services to organizations (schools and small / medium sized Business) and public in cooperation with ISP or infrastructure-providers like Sun Microsystems.
Now, our main questions are:
*1.-* Is the Server phy. recourse enough to deliver the mentioned services of Communication Suite to 20 clients without problems?
*2.-* Isnt Communications Suite oversized for such small network mentioned above or better, if we use another collaboration software system like Opengroupeware (http://opengroupware.org/) ? Opengroupeware is developed using non-java lang and therefore doesnt match our strategy.
*3.-* Does the Communications Suite download-pack includes all necessary components of Sun Java ES (Directory Server, Access Manager, etc.) or these components are to be downloaded separately?
*4.-* What is the difference between the Sun Java System Messaging Server and the Sun Java System Message Queue?
We appropriate very much your answers and any further useful information regarding our project.
Thanks
Asghar

1> I believe your hardware can support 20 users (you might need to tune the Web Server heap size) - I had a Sparc 2x450mhz w/ 2GB of ram supporting 50+ users quite comfortably - with roughly half using POP and the other half IMAP/webmail. Ideally though, for best performance you would want to break up the main servers (LDAP, WEB, and MS) between hosts) - probably not necessary for 20 users. Having all on one machine simplifies things too (but also makes it a single-point-of-failure). Your disk obviously is important, the faster the better - that it's redundant is also nice - larger deployments might use much fancier storage systems to provide speed and redundancy, and use an the App Server instead of the Web Server as a container for Comms Express.
2> I don't think it's "oversized" - might you mean overkill? In this case I don't think overkill is a bad thing. Why not have very capable software, even if you don't really need it -is how I see things.
3> I believe you get all you need in the download. Though I've never tried the 64bit version (which I am guessing is only really necessary for larger deployments where you want to obtain maximized performance for heavier loads). I recommend following the single host evaluation document to get the hang of the install.
4> I'm not sure - though the Messaging install I believe requires the MQueue stuff, I think it's sort of an API for messaging, also available separately, but used by JES Messaging system?
Good Luck,
s7

• Sun Java Communications Suite questions

Hi all! This is my first post to these boards so please excuse any board fobars.
Anyway, I have been charge with replacing our existing mail system based on POSTFIX, IMAP and SMTP with a better solution and have come to Sun Java Communications Suite as an option.
I notice the software can be downloaded for free, but there isn't any obvious mention of end-user costs. Are there any?
Second, what is the best way to back up the system each night and weekend. I have tried doing a search in Yahoo! and Google but haven't really come up with an answer. Can I back up individial mailboxes and objects with them or must I backup only the system as a whole?
Thanks for any help!
Mark

Yes it has shared folders and you can set up email lists. For instance I have our hylafax fax server just convert the incoming fax and put it in a public company folder that everyone has read access to. Also I have a mailing list that when you send to the address it goes to all employees and you can add the ability for an outside email address like [email protected] rights to send mail to it. The graphical interface works well but you'll want to make your own service packages which isn't hard to do. I really like using commadmin to create my users over the delegated admin but that’s just me.
Oh yea I also have a public mail folder I use for corp documents. I just email the docs into that folder.
Calendar server is great. The outlook connector works great.
Plus if you’re going to run it on Solaris 10 you get all the great functionality of that operating system for instance I have my whole mail server running on a solaris zone which resides on a zfs filesystem.
Which makes it extremely easy to back up or clone and run experiments or updates something goes wrong just rollback. ZFS is truly the best file system out. Solaris is so awesome it was able to keep running even when one of my cheap xeon processors was running in a degraded state. Solaris Fault manager is a god send and they don’t even market it really. fmadm faulty has saved my butt many times.
Solaris 10 + commsuite = Little downtime and tons of power.

I download the sun java communication suite 5 for solaris sparc.
I have a sunfire 280r server with Solaris 9 9/05 HW s9s_u9wos_06b SPARC installed.
I follow the document 820-0086.pdf to try the product (deployment example), i succesfully installed the product using acasalud.com.ar as the domain.

Can someone please create a forum for the "Oracle Communications Unified Communication Suite"?
The equivalent forum on the forums.sun.com was quite helpful and active, so we would appreciate have the forum on the oracle forums as well.
King Regards

We will need the product manager to request this - if you know him/her, pass it along.

On installation when I tried to access my adobe account in the dialog box that appeared. It said I didn't have an internet connection. My internet was working fine and I got the same message even once I launched my browser.

Did you install using an account with admin privileges? Do you have any Group or other security policies on machine that may restrict new software installs?

Hello Shane,
I appreciate you help.
The dispatcher process crashes by itself, nobody kills it manually :)
The coreadm has been enabled from the installation date and there is just one old core dump for some java process.
coreadm
global core file pattern: /var/core/core.%f
global core file content: default
init core file pattern: core
init core file content: default

-rw------- 1 root root 75235729 Jan 4 12:34 core.javaNow I changed coreadm to this:
coreadm
global core file pattern: /var/core/core.%f
global core file content: default
init core file pattern: core
init core file content: default
global core dumps: enabled
per-process core dumps: disabled
global setid core dumps: enabled
per-process setid core dumps: disabled
global core dump logging: enabledOK. Next time I will use "imsimta restart" but this does not solve the problem.
I used /opt/sun/comms/messaging64/bin/stop-msg, /opt/sun/comms/messaging64/bin/start-msg commands to do this.
The problem I have is SMTP service stops to work and I cannot receive any emails until I do a restart .
Can I turn on some additional logging either for dispatcher or for SMTP process?
Any ideas how to make it work stable?
Best Regards,
Victor

• Oracle IAMS and UCS (Communications Suite) interoperability - is there any?

I am relatively new to Oracle IAMS, but had some experients with Sun IDM. It seems the two projects are quite different, with IDM being essentially a replicator of entered (or sucked-in) user metadata into slave repositories such as LDAP servers, databases, MSAD and automated human workflows. IAMS includes several LDAP servers of its own and relies on Oracle database for many of its components, and seems like a much more complex solution...
So the first short question is thus: is IAMS just a replicator of user account data from some authoritative source(s) into other repositories, or is it something much more that that (and can it work as such a replicator at all)?
Anyway, the bigger quest I'm facing is this: a customer wants the IAMS deployment to be the only place that stores information about user accounts, roles, policies, etc. This is considered sensitive data, and Oracle is trusted to store it, while other systems should not have their replicas but rather make queries into IAMS repository services whenever they want to process data for some user account, determine assigned roles to authorize some activity, etc.
One of these other systems is Oracle Unified Communications Suite (nee Sun Java Communications Suite), which relies on Sun/Oracle DSEE as the LDAP server to store its "user-group" data and lots of configuration data. IIRC the CommSuite documentation implied that other LDAP servers are not guaranteed to work, at least not for all types of data. For example, it was required to replicate data from MSAD into DSEE (with an IDM or with ISW), or set up pass-through auth via DSEE into MSAD, or maybe glue the two systems into a virtual LDAP service with DPS, etc.
So, the question is: can any of the LDAP services in IAMS be used directly by OUCS components? Can IAMS replace the OUCS Delegated Admin for management of users (creation of accounts and the myriad of email/calendar/instmsg/addressbook LDAP properties, setup of quotas and allowed "service packages", etc.)
If not, what sort of OUCS data can be stored outside its own LDAP service? In this context I'm interested in storing users' names, physical addresses, phones, preferably address-books, etc. in IAMS repositories for "sensitive data", while configuration stuff like mail filters, quotas, etc. and "un-individualized" UIDs might be stored in OUCS DSEE catalogs if they must.
Ultimately, some mix of DSEE and IAMS might be representable by DSEE DPS as well, and seem enough like a DSEE instance for the OUCS components...
What is doable and possible in this scenario? What reasonable questions did I not know enough to ask? ;)
Thanks in advance,
//Jim Klimov

Did you need oracle database?

• Anyone running Communications Suite 5 on X86 hardware

Hi,
We recently installed communications Suite 5 on X86 hardware and have run into numerous bug and issues. We are wondering if there are others that have installed Comm. Suite 5 on X86 that are willing to share their experiences and possibly collaborate with us.
We've contacted support many times and on many occasions we get bug reports and patches that refer to bug fixes for Sparc Hardware but it doesn't seem that many people (including Sun support) use x86.
Any information or comments would be appreciated.
thanks

Hi Shane,
I appreciate the response.
We are as patched as we can. We have also been putting in binary files, IDRs and T patches as recommended by our support person(s), and many times having to back them out because the patch caused as many problems as it has fixed. The only time the system was at all stable and working to what we thought was proper was during our (as we later found out, minimal) testing. Once we actually had most of our user population using it and putting it under load we've had problem after problem. Including things such as the Calendar server crashing ever 1-2 hours, Calendar database getting corrupted and then deleted by failing hot backups/archiving, mal-formatted email message, ics* attributes being deleted for users when setting permission via outlook connector, uwc, or cal express, and numerous JavaScript errors.
Maybe the Sparc version is just as buggy but I don't think that it is a far stretch to think that completely different hardware platforms would not always have the same bugs. Especially considering that we are talking completely different architectures with different endian-ness, memory registers, etc...
I'm sure a vast majority of bugs in jsp, java, and javascript code can be seen between platforms but as noted above we have been given binaries which, maybe have the same code base but wont necessarily cause the same bugs. Maybe the bugs are there but on many occasions I have been given a bug number which I can't pull any information about (being that it is an internal bug number I suppose). So maybe the bugs are in both sparc and x86 but I have no way to know this until the official patch is release or the bug is publicly available.
I posted here, so that I could get a better idea of what others are seeing with their systems. Another reason I ask this and stated that it seemed like very few people are using comm suite 5 on x86, because from the start of our testing and throughout the last 5 months we have repeatedly asked our Sun partner, Sun support personel, Sun account managers, and anyone else involved, if they could refer us to someone that has a comm suite 5 deployment on x86 and as yet we have not gotten a single response.
With this said, I am simply stating my experiences up until now and on many occassions (of the nearly 40 cases that we have opened with support) I have repeatedly been told things like my only test platform is a sparc ultra 5, or we can't recreate your issue on a similar system (similar as in sparc and not x86 or deployed on a single host and not a DWP setup like ours). I've created test accounts for support to be able to log into our uwc so that they can see what we are seeing.
I have always thought very highly of Sun but this has been changing slowly over the last 5 months or so.
You asked for bug numbers, here are some, maybe I am wrong that they are particular to x86, maybe it is because we have a DWP setup, I've been wrong before.
6590680,6591407
Again, I do appreciate any response, and I would like to say thanks to all the support persons that we have been dealing with to get our issues resolved.
As another aside, it might be helpful to know what our setup might be like so here it is:
We have three servers 2 Sun Fire x2100's, one Sun Fire x4200, a Sun Stroragetek 6140 Disk Array and a Sun Storedge C4 Tape Library.
x2100 is used for front end calendar server, UWC, calendar express, messenger express (users don't go directly to messenger express, but we have used calendar express for some workarounds temporarily and most users don't use or know about either calendar or messenger express, they just use UWC).
x2100 for MMP and MTA, this is connected via LMTP to our backend Message store.
x4100 for Messages Store and back end Calendar Server, our x4100 also is running a Solaris Zone where we have our Directory server (this zone in on zfs as was recommended by our Sun partner, until recently, I'm told this was a bad idea)). The x4100 message store (zfs), calendar database (zfs), and mboxlist db (zfs) is stored on the 6140 disk array. The x4100 is connected to the 6140 via 2 HBA's through a Qlogic Fibre channel switch.
thanks again and sorry for the blogish style post.

• Communications Suite 5 in Sparse Zones

My machine has one NIC and one public IP
I've been able to setup zones on my Solaris 08/07 x86 machine in this manner:
3 sparse zones are on a private network (192.168.0.x) and have access to the internet via virtual interfaces of the physical NIC.
From outside the machine, services are available on on the machine's public IP, using NAT and IPF I have a service like SSH forwarded to a zone. For example: ssh -l jdoe -p 2222 public ip (or fqhdn) gets me into a particular zone based on my ipnat.conf.
I'm not sure I can do anything name based with the zones as far as forwarding the traffic appropriately based on name, especially with only one IP... or if this is a requirement for such an installation.
My question here is: Would it be possible to do an installation of Communications Suite 5 that uses my zones - they would talk to each other on the local network, but be accessed by clients via one IP (and/or name) on the physical NIC.
Would you recommend certain components on the global zone? Or would a scenario like:
Dir in zone a
Mail servers in zone b
and Web server in zone c
work?
My uncertainty is in how the components will talk to each other as:
Currently, on the inside, the zones are reachable only on their private IPs and actual ports - so once inside the global zone: ssh -l jdoe -p 2222 public ip (or fqhdn) doesn't work - I have to use the private IP and actual port, e.g. ssh -l jdoe -p 22 192.168.0.10 (or host name as mapped in /etc/hosts). Not sure if there is any fix for this, maybe further ipnat, ipf rules. Is this even a problem? Might this be transparent to end-user?
Thanks for any insights,
s7

I got this working. But on my first go, I had a problem. Without the /etc/hosts entries, I was forced by the installer to use the local zone hostname during the WS, AM, DA, and CE installs; the problem is AM would redirect to this un-DNS-resolvable local zone name - e.g. when calling: http://gz.foo.bar.com/amconsole it would redirect to: http://silverzone.foo.bar.com/amconsole, which failed outside of the /etc/hosts environment.
Here's what worked on the second go:
Each zone's /etc/hosts files have entries for each other; and one -its primary entry- calling itself the GZ name.
This allows the WS/AM/DA/CE to use the 1 DNS resolvable hostname I have (gz.foo.bar.com), and avoids AM redirecting to an non DNS resolvable zone name.
For example, here's the silverzone's /etc/hosts file:
# Internet host table
# ::1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.80 gz.foo.bar.com silverzone.foo.bar.com silverzone loghost
192.168.0.60 orangezone.foo.bar.com orangezone
192.168.0.70 purplezone.foo.bar.com purplezone
During the install parts, (except for the DS itself, where I did use the GZ hostname), when it wanted the LDAP host or URL, I used the zone name - e.g. purplezone.foo.bar.com:389 - because if I used the gz.foo.bar.com name, it wouldn't work - because LDAP's on a different zone.
This doesn't appear to be a problem as the LDAP name-based communication seems to happen entirely internally.
For CE config: Since messaging and calendaring servers are on a different zone than CE/WS, I had to use their zone names when referring to the host/port ME and Cal. Exp. are listening on - I couldn't use the GZ name. Again, as each zone also thinks its the GZ - it would try to find those servers/ports on itself, and those servers are listening on a different zone.
Basically, I tried to use the GZ name during the install wherever it would let me, and I increased the places it would by having the /etc/hosts entries. When I couldn't use the GZ hostname, I used the appropriate local zone names.
My sequence was something like this (I used "configure now" option):
0> install shared components and message queue in GZ
1> purplezone: install DS and preparation script - start server, run prep script
2> orangezone: install messaging and calendar servers
3> silverzone: install WS, DA, CE, and AM (use GZ name for AM hostname)
4> silverzone: configure DA
5> orangezone: configure messaging an calendar
6> silverzone: configure CE
For calendar, I did have to edit the ics.conf and replace the entries for orangezone with gz.foo.bar.com.
This thread helped me setup the inter-zone networking:
