Veritas Cluster (SFRAC) and oracle CRS

We have oracle 9i RAC running on Solaris 9 with over veritas cluster.
We want to run 10g RAC on the same same servers which will use the
veritas cluster file system
While trying to install 10g CRS the node selection list doesnt show node
information.Entered information using response file .After the installation
root.sh fails to start CRS.
Is it ok to run 9i and 10g RAC on same servers.

We have a libskgxn2.so in /opt/ORCLcluster/lib directory. But the size of the file is
different from /opt/VRTSvcs/rac/lib/libskgxn2_64.so.1 file
Since we already have 9i rac running, I am not sure if copying the file from
/opt/VRTSvcs/rac/lib directory if it will affect 9i rac.
I went ahead with installation of CRS. I am getting following error while running root.sh

Red Hat Cluster Suite and Oracle RAC

Our boss will plan to configure Red Hat Cluster Suite to replace to update oracle RAC.
Are there some experienced expert to explain advantage and risk of Red Hat Cluster Suite v Oracle RAC 11.2

Hi,
first of all Red Hat Cluster Suite cannot replace the RAC functionality. RAC is database Red Hat Cluster Suite, just provides clusterware. So all with what you will end up is a plain old failover cluster solution.
So in maximum Red Hat Cluster Suite can replace the Oracle Clusterware. (But not below a RAC, since this is not supported and even with integration with other clusterware Oracle Clusterware will still be there).
So what he will end up is also replacing RAC with single instance databases in a failover cluster solution, and with this will decrease a lot of RAC capabilities:
=> Rolling Upgrade (OS / Clusterware and some database patches)
=> Storage migration/consolidation
=> Fast failover (30 seconds vs. minutes).

But even if there are other justifications to reduce availablity (which actually can only be costs), I still wonder, why he wants to replace Oracle Clusterware - the clusterware shipped with Oracle is far more mature than the one from the Red Hat cluster Suite.
And there is no better integration for Oracle databases in clusterware than what Oracle clusterware can provide.
Even more so, OCW is a full capable clusterware and you can build your own failover cluster solution for free.
The same would have to be done if he replaces it with redhat cluster.
PS: If someone is providing failover scripts for Oracle in Redhat clusters, it will be Redhat (but I think you have to write them yourself).

Veritas Hardware Cluster and Oracle Data Guard

Hi,
Actually we use Veritas Cluster Server for our Database Configuration. So we have a hardware standby cluster. In case of a failure the VCS does a failover, as you know ;-)
But now we are planning to use DataGuard for having a logical standby database for reporting cases. I just read something about a VERITAS CLUSTER SERVER AGENT for DataGuard.
What do I have to do (is there a possibility without using the Veritas Agent) for having a standby failover solution with Veritas and also a DataGuard Configuration.
What is going to happen if the Cluster does a failover? Will the Data Guard configuration be alive or is it going to break?
Please give me some advice. Maybe you have some links for articles that handle this topic.

In terms of feasibility, yes, you can definitely have a database running on a Veritas Cluster Server and (at the same time) a Data Guard physical standby database.
If you are mentioning "VERITAS CLUSTER SERVER AGENT for DataGuard" by Symantec, I don't know the product in details.
What I can say is that you are definitely able to monitor and administer an Oracle Data Guard configuration by using just products that come with the Oracle licence.
In case of a failover, as long as your Oracle Net setup is resilient to the failover, Data Guard is as well. So, the short answer is: no it is not going to break.
I have setup this architecture several times with no problem.
Of course this is just high level.

Is there a difference between Oracle Cluster and Oracle Cluster with RAC? Please explain. Do existing database codes run unmodified in Cluster or Cluster with RAC environment? What needs to be modified to make existing SQL codes RAC-aware. How to achieve 'all automatic' in case of failure and resubmission of Queries from failed instance to a running instance?
In 10g environment, do we need to consider licensing of RAC as a separate product? What are additional features one derives in 10g that is not in Cluster +RAC?
Your comments and pointers to comparison study and pictorial clarification will be very helpful.

Oracle cluster like failsafe before or Veritas Cluster or other vendor's cluster is meant for HA (high availability) purpose. Which 2 nodes or more can see a shared disk with 1 active node. Whenever this active node failed through heartbeat other machine will know and will take the database over from there.
Oracle RAC is more for HA and load balance. In Oracle RAC 2 or more nodes are accessing the database at the same time so it spread load across all these nodes.
I believe Oracle 10g RAC still need seperate license for it. But you need to call Oracle or check the production document to verify it.
Oracle 10g besides improvement in RAC. It's main improvement is on the build in management of the database itself. It can monitored and selftune itself to much furthur level then before and give DBA much more information to determine the cause of the problem as well. Plus improvement on lots of utility as well like RMAN , data pump etc... I don't want to get into too much detail on this you can check on their 10g new features for more detail view.

I have 2 sun sparc servers with solaris 10 installed on it and shared LUN setup(SAN disk RAID 5 partitions)
Have to have 2 node setup for RAC load balancing.

As per oracle clusterware documents the cluster manager support is only for windows and linux.
In case of solaris SPARC will the cluster manager get configured ???
The term "Cluster Manager" refers to a "cluster manager" that Oracle used in 9i times and this one was indeed only available on Linux / Windows.
Therefore, let me, please, ask you something: Which version of Oracle RAC do you plan to use?
Because for 9i RAC, you would need Sun or Veritas Cluster on Solaris. The answers given here that Sun Cluster would not be required assume 10g RAC or higher.
Now, you might see other dependencies which can be resolved by Sun Cluster. I cannot comment on those.
For the RAW setup: having RAW disks (not raw logical volumes) will be fine without Veritas and ASM on top.

Veritas Cluster 6 + Solaris 11 + Oracle RAC 11g2 = OCR trouble

I trying new version of Veritas Cluster and Solaris.
Experienced trouble with clustered VxFS for OCR file.
Grid installer refuse VxFS with message - not support the storage type.
After installation I tryed to add new OCR file on VxFS got message in crsd.log:

Trouble was solved by VCS patch 6.0.3
Version 6.0.1 does not support Solaris 11.1

DO I need SFRAC for Oracle 10g RAC on Sun Solaris

My platform is SUN Solaris 10 64 bit on v490 server. On the backend side, we are using EMC CX500 storage. We will use Veritas File system and Veritas CFS.
I would like to ask, Do I must need SFRAC to configure Oracle 10g RAC or Can I just use only Oracle CRS. I do not want to use ASM.

The VCFS usually requires a Veritas Cluster, thus you would have to use the product combination that is bundled as SFRAC as mentioned before. Metalink in addition says:
10 10gR2 64-bit Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC 5.0 Certified
There is one exception to this rule: Linux.
Veritas and Oracle support a standalone version of the Veritas Cluster Files System (and only this component) on Linux. This does not hold true for Solaris.
Concluding, if you want to use the VCFS you would need to get a VCS, which then basically means using SFRAC.
However, in this case, as mentioned before, you would not need ASM.

Oracle CRS stack is already configured while running root.sh

I am trying to install cluster ware in for 10g (10.2.0.1)RAC in RHEL5 node 1 and node 2 servers. Already i tried install clusterware but my installation failed in last step. So i uninstalled and tried my installation again from node 1. But when i execute the ./root.sh as root user in node 1 or node 2 i get the below error

cd <GRID_HOME>/crs/install
run as root:
# rootcrs.pl -deconfig -force
then run under oracle user:
<GRID_HOME>/deinstall/deinstall
This should do.
If you still see this warnings, check if you have any oracle-owned files under /etc, for example /etc/oracle dir with local ocr/olr location files.
Consider renaming/removing them and try again.
