Veritas' Future on Solaris 10 Environments

With SVM getting better and zFs on the horizon - will there still be a place for Veritas products - ie. VxVM and VxFS?

You should check the supported operating system matrix for Storage Foundation to see what they support. But yes, Solaris x64 is supported. I don't think they support 32-bit x86.

  • Installing Veritas SF on Solaris 10 5/08 - perl - cannot execute

    Hi all,
I have been trying to install the Storage Foundation on a Solaris 10 5/08 box. Running ./installer from the DVD gives me quickly the following error message, 3 repeated lines (referring to file/folders on the DVD):
    ./installer: ./perl/SunOS/perl/bin/perl: cannot execute
    ./installer: ./perl/SunOS/perl/bin/perl: cannot execute
    ./installer: ./perl/SunOS/perl/bin/perl: cannot execute
After installing Solaris I updated it and installed the companion programs. I also compiled and installed the more recent perl 5.8.8.
Does anyone have any idea why the Storage Foundation is giving me this? All the r/x. rights are in place.
    Best regards

    Hi,
Why aren't you just unzip the file locally, on your target server? It shouldn't use a lot of space.

  • Solaris 8 on Sun v215

Is there any way to install Solaris 8 on a sun v215? When I try to boot from cdrom, the server starts to read the DVD then stops and complains about not finding a path to kernel. The Solaris 10 out of the box install shows the platform to be sun4u which is the same as the older v210s we have. The CPUs are also both Sparc IIIi's so I'm not sure why it won't install. Please help...
Also, I just realized the v215 isn't even on the HCL yet. Why is that?

Sometinmes it seems to take a comparison to others before understanding arrives.
Microsoft no longer provides support for Windows 98, either,
despite the fact that there are many corporate users still running it.
Why does the size of an installed base define whether support will be provided?
Now, considering your question from a hardware functionality viewpoint,
and once again using the Redmond company as an example,
I dare you to try to install Windows 98 on a new Core 2 Duo system.
It won't work, and Microsoft is not about to put functionality for it onto that old Win9x kernel.
You could ask them until you run out of breath and they would ignore you.
Solaris 8 is about to be discontinued. It won't be re-engineered to work
in hardware that gets invented now and into the future.
    Solaris EOL Policy
You could choose to just not buy the computer,
or you could realize you must run a mixed-Solaris company (8, 9, and 10),
or you could migrate everything to (and learn the nuances of) a newer Solaris.

    Hi,
The metalink note Output Post Processor Fails Due to java.sql.SQLException: Exhausted Resultset [ID 740529.1], is not related to us, we have already verified that. In our case the Application is running on Virtual Hostname and this virtual hostname is taken care by Veritas Library, ACC.
Secondly the FND_NODES also shows the Virtual hostname as the application is configured on Virtual Hostname. So in our case its not seems to be comming from the FND_NODES tables, rather it seems that some of the Java files/class is picking it by the OS command uname -a.
So if we can find that class or environment file of java, we can export the Virtual Hostname as we used it in configuration. Please note that the Concurrent Manager and Application listener are also working fine on the Virtual Hostname, by using the Veritas library.
    Solaris:
    LD_PRELOAD_32=/usr/lib/secure/libvuname.so
    VHOSTNAME=<virtual hostname>
    Please suggest.
    Best Regards

  • 10g R2 RAC on Solaris 10 with EMC Storage

We are in the process of setting up 3/4 node RAC with the following components:
    Oracle 10g R2 RAC
Oracle Clusterware / Sun Cluster / Veritas Cluster
    Sun Solaris 10
    EMC storage
    ASM/Cluster FS
I would appreciate if some one can through some light on:
    * ) Veritas cluster / Sun Cluster is must component or Can I use Oracle clusterware ? what are the advantages and disadvantages of using Oracl clusterware compare with varitas cluster or sun cluster
    * ) Is cluster filesystem a compulsory component or Can I use ASM instead of Cluster File system.
    * ) If I don't use cluster filesystem where to put CRS repository and voting disk ?
    * ) What is best option for Oracle_Home, is it shared oracle home or sepereate oracle_home on each node ?
    * ) Are there any known risks invovled in using ASM. How is the I/O performance with ASM on EMC with Solaris ? Are there any best practices
    * ) Is GigE okay for interconnect or do I need to go for Infiniband ?
    * ) Is there any notes on Best practices for the above components
*) Do I need to consider fail over option for NIC's (interconnect and public), if yes, how to do that ?
*) Are there any other risks do I need to consider ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I see lot of good input. I have done few RAC installs on sun/solaris/emc ...
Here are few things to consider.
    * ) Veritas cluster / Sun Cluster is must component or Can I use Oracle clusterware ? what are the advantages and disadvantages of using Oracl clusterware compare with varitas cluster or sun cluster
Just stay with Oracle Clusterware. If there are any issues then you only have to deal with one vendor and there will be no finger pointing. In any case Oracle Clusterware is needed even if you install Veritas/Sun.
    * ) Is cluster filesystem a compulsory component or Can I use ASM instead of Cluster File system.
For the database you can use ASM. The only time I have considered a cluster filesystem is if external tables were in use.
When you use ASM you need to partition the disk with 1 meg offset or start at cyclinder 1.
    * ) If I don't use cluster filesystem where to put CRS repository and voting disk ?
OCR and Voting Disk go on raw devices.
    * ) What is best option for Oracle_Home, is it shared oracle home or sepereate oracle_home on each node ?
Install ORACLE_HOME, ASM_HOME and CRS_HOME locally on each server.
    * ) Are there any known risks invovled in using ASM. How is the I/O performance with ASM on EMC with Solaris ? Are there any best practices
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/asm/pdf/asm-on-emc-5_3.pdf
We have always installed 2 HBAs and used powerpath.
    * ) Is GigE okay for interconnect or do I need to go for Infiniband ?
For a majority of cases gigE is sufficient.
    * ) Is there any notes on Best practices for the above components
    Have redundancy at each level.
*) Do I need to consider fail over option for NIC's (interconnect and public), if yes, how to do that ?
You can use IPMP. Use large send/receive buffers. Enable Jumbo Frames.
We had to apply some patches.
5128575 - RAC install of 10.2.0.2 does not update libknlopt.a on all nodes

  • SAPINST 'space' error on Solaris 10 Zone

    Hi All,
I am attempting to install a 4.7E X 110 system on Oracle 9 and Solaris 10. I am in the CI phase of the installation and am getting an error in phase "Check/Adapt Filesystem". I'm not sure where - it does not say exactly. But the 3 main areas - /sapmnt , /usr/sap and /oracle all share the same space - "1927165003 blocks" (about 919GB).
This makes no sense for the space check function to be failing. It is possible that the SAPINST is checking the /usr directory at the global level even though it cannot install it there. (We are running a local zone for the server). We have a link set up /usrsap for the /usr/sap folder.
Has anyone ever seen this? Any ideas on how to push this forward? SAPINST does not offer an explicit option for the /usr/sap/ folder.
    Points for all helpful answers!!!
    Thanks!!

Due to Zones are virtualized Solaris 10 environments during the installation the standard Solaris installation problems may occur. For instance, the /home directory is read-only due to the auto-mount feature is enabled by default. This usually causes problems with the installer when creation of the users is required.
The concept of zones includes that the kernel of the host system is used. Therefore other limitations may occur when adapting the OS kernel is required. Also the read-only directories mounted from the global zone may cause problems.
Please read;724713,828268And important 1 zone note also.sorry to say i realy forgot that note number.

    FYI:
Solaris Cluster 3.2 01/09 (aka u2) has now been released.
The new Solaris Cluster 3.2 1/09 update adds innovative business continuity capabilities for Oracle RAC in Solaris virtualized environments, enables increased high availability with new monitoring capabilities and configuration advisors, supports more types of storage solutions and provides simplified configurations.
For additional details go to [http://sun.com/cluster]
    Download the software from here
Solaris Cluster engineering will blog about it here
You can find the documentation here
    Enjoy.

    ---

From what I have read Sun Cluster 3.2 will not be supported with RAC 11g R2 untill September time frame.
The functionality will be released via a cluster core patch.
Currently Sun Cluster is looking down in /etc/init.d/init.crs to start CRS (11g R1). With 11g R2 the start script for GRID is now /etc/init.d/ohasd.
SC does support HA 11g R2, but not RAC at this point in time.

  • Deal-breakers for real use of Solaris 11 Express

I run Solaris 10 U9 for my home 12TB NAS box - based on Supermicro H8SSL-i2 motherboard (ServerWorks HT1000 Chipset and Dual-port Broadcom BCM5704C) and their 8-port SATA2 PCI-X card (AOC-SAT2-MV8). It's a great (but aging) platform and a rock solid OS with the unbeatable ZFS volume manager/filesystem.
However, despite my willingness to run Solaris 11 Express in this role, I can't because of these deal-breakers:
    1) Lack of a full-featured installer that allows me to lay out or preserve existing partitions the way I want. Making /var a separate file system is a must. Ideally, I'd be able to run multiple versions of Solaris on the same box by customizing grub, and use my ZPOOLs on either Solaris 10 or 11 Express while I learn the new OS.
    2) Lack of support for the Broadcom BCM5704C dual-port gigabit NIC (and others), which work wonderfully under Solaris 10, but are badly broken under Solaris 11 Express. I know I could disable the on-board Broadcom NICs and go buy an Intel card - but why the need for this? Won't there be a fix for Broadcom NICs?
    3) Lack of support for modern, generic, server-class motherboards and PCI-e multi-port SATA/SAS cards. I wonder about the future for Solaris without support for modern, affordable x64 server hardware.
Maybe I'm missing the point and Solaris 11 Express is only intended to be run as a virtual machine under VBox or VMware. But it would sure be nice to be able to run it on my real hardware - even if it is just a small hobbyist rig. Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Mike

In Solaris 11, you get a separate /var by default. If you update from Solaris 11 Express to Solaris 11, this transition doesn't happen automatically. If you decide to tackle it on your own, you need to be sure that it is done in a way that beadm, pkg, and other consumers of libbe will handle properly. I would recommend something along the lines of the following. This is untested and may break your system - prove it out somewhere unimportant first.
Do the work in a new boot environment so you reduce the likelihood that you will break things in an unrecoverable way.
    # beadm create sepvar
    # beadm mount sepvar /mntFigure out the name of the root dataset of the new boot environment, then create a var dataset as a child of that.
    # rootds=$(zfs list -H -o name /mnt)
    # zfs create -o mountpoint=/var -o canmount=noauto $rootds/varMount this new /var and migrate data
    # mkdir /tmp/newvar
    # zfs mount -o mountpoint=/tmp/newvar $rootds/var
    # cd /mnt/var
    # mv $(ls -A) /tmp/newvarUnmount, remount
    # umount /tmp/newvar
    # beadm unmount sepvar
    # beadm mount sepvar /mntAt this point /mnt/var should be a separate dataset than /mnt. The contents of /mnt/var should look just like the contents of /var, aside from transient data that has changed while you were doing this. Assuming that is the case, you should be ready to activate and boot the new boot environment.
    # beadm activate sepvar
    # beadm unmount sepvar
    # init 6

  • Upgrading from Solaris 10 to 11.2

We have couple of old machines T2000, 8 CPU, 4 threads/core.  Internal disk size 2x75GB,  4 NIC cards, 32GB of RAM.   3 actual NG zones giving any service and machine is 99% idle.  I had a brilliant idea of making one of these machines a Solaris 11.2 and since the  NG zones are running mail MTA applications, they should not be dependent on the OS.  How easy it would be to change to internal drive to a bigger drive and the upgrading of machine?  If I can achieve that, I can create many more NG zones and do useful work with them as with Solaris 11.2 I am not bound by just one IP address subnet, as was the case with Solaris 10.

    Hello
This is not possible,  you can have
You can move your sol10 GZ as to sol10 brand zone in sol11.2 too
sol11.2  GZ  --- sol10 brand NGZ  (this was you GZ)
                           --- sol10 brand1 NGZ (this was a NGZ)
                          ---  sol11 native NGZ
--- sol11.2 kernel zone (this is new in sol11.2)
to get some back ground of this the best is read the manuals, I know there are quite a few but they are worthy to check

  • P2V Solaris 10 flar to zone

    Hi,
Ive taken a flash archive of a physical Solaris 10 server which ive copied over to a new Sun T3. For testiing purposes I want to create a new zone using the Flar I created on the physical server but am running in problems.
I followed the procedure on http://dbaspot.com/solaris/394244-solaris-10-zone-flar.html but when I verify the zone I keep receiving a message saying the branded zone cannot be found. Ive checked (and double checked) everything and things seem fine.
My question is has anyone else had any issues with this process and if so what was the resolution and is there a better way of creating a Solaris 10 zone from a Flar of a physical Solaris 10 server?? If things don't work as planned usiing the dbaspot method Ive also taken a ufsdump of / and /var which I plan to restore to the zone when it's installed so if anyone has any experience of doing that???
    Thanks...

There might be ( and probably are ) a few 'backdoor' tricks which will get it to work, but from what I understand there is no supported way to build a Solaris 10 zone, from a flar, ... onto a Solaris 10 host.
Now "Solaris 11" ... that is another matter.
From the Solaris 11 web site -
" Oracle Solaris 11 Express 2010.11 introduces the ability to run Oracle Solaris 10 environments
inside a Solaris 10 Container running on top of Oracle Solaris 11 Express 2010.11. For users already
running their applications either in zones or on bare metal on Oracle Solaris 10 systems, virtual-tovirtual
(v2v) and physical-to-virtual (p2v) tools are provided to help this transition over to an Oracle
Solaris 10 Container. An Oracle Solaris 10 Container can have a shared IP stack with the global
zone, or an exclusive IP stack. Oracle Solaris 10 Zones provide a proven, tested and fully supported
option for quick adoption of Oracle Solaris 11 Express 2010.11 allowing administrators to benefit
immediately from all the new features available while providing an easy application migration path. "

  • Scope and Career in Solaris OS 10

    Hi,
My company is giving me a project (OMC or department) wherein I am to work on Solaris OS. However, my company is going to provide me with the training of Administration and Treoubleshooting of Solaris OS 10 (Technically the training would be at Level 2).
I have expertise of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 at RHCE Level. I have interest in learning more on UNIX.
So, my main question is: What would be my career or future in Solaris? Would I be working on a totally new technology? Would my understanding of UNIX and Linux be of a great help or not at all? Also, money or salary-wise, can I expect a good package after acquiring skills in Solaris OS?
    With regards,
    Dev.

Most of what you are asking is a matter of opinion and or geographically specific. I have found that there are quite a few similarities with rhel and solaris. What you will find a lot is that files may be similar in their configuration but are in different locations in solaris than in rhel. The way of configuring solaris as compared to rhel will be different as well. Solaris doesn't have as many built in configuration tools like rhel has, system-config...etc. Most of it will be done by hand via files or during initial set up.
Personally I love solaris, I feel it is a great OS that has a lot to offer. It is very stable.
