Veritas restore

I have an Oracle 8.7 Database which is giving me an error ORA-12516. I cannot seem to get a resolution for this and will be doing a restore instead.
The entire machine containing the database server is backup up every night using Veritas.
What is the best way to restore the database to a prior copy ?

You have asked a complex question, but provided very little info on which to base an answer.
What type of backups did you make? RMAN? Database file copies? Hot or cold? Full or incremental?
Nobody can give a good answer until you give more details about your situation.

    Restore from veritas backup check with the backup documentation or contact with your system admin. Remove the validate keyword from your script and try again.
    Try with this one.
    restore archivelog until time "to_date('27-05-2008','DD-MM-YYYY')";

  • Backup restoring procedure in system9

    anybody has documents or links which talks about backup / restore complete system9 products . ?

    Hi,
    I tell what I usually do.
    I have EssBase and its apps in a server, and SharedServices in another one, so that, I have to do different backups.
    First, make a Full backup for the ...\Hyperion folder with any backup tool (ntbackup and/or veritas in my case) and then, differential backups.
    In the other server a use a script to make local copies of the SharedServices folder to mantain 1 copy per day.
    On the other hand, you have to backup you SQL bases. I use de ms SQLServer tool for that.
    This is a copy of my script to backup SharedServices (anyone who "lost" OpenLDAP service knows what I'm talking about..) that I scheduled to run every day. Please note that SharedServices has its own script to backup the directory, and it works fine.
    ++NOTE: %HYPBKP% is a system variable that I set in windows
    echo "OPENLDAP Backup Log File" >SS_BKP.log
    echo "######################" >>SS_BKP.log
    Date /T >>SS_BKP.log
    Time /T >>SS_BKP.log

    I hope this help you.
    Good luck

    Do I need to pass in the source host name when configuring the channel? So instead of
    send 'NB_ORA_SERV=pobackup01, NB_ORA_POLICY=jdeoracle, NB_ORA_SCHED=hotfull';
    i would need,
    send 'NB_ORA_SERV=pobackup01, NB_ORA_CLIENT=newhost, NB_ORA_POLICY=jdeoracle, NB_ORA_SCHED=hotfull';
    ??

    Ok, problem solved. Here's the complete process for recovering a non-archivelog mode data base to a new host from a cold backup from veritas 6.5 tape library.
    I used the "until time 'SYSDATE-5'" option because the cold backup was taken 5 days ago, and while rman will look back up to 7 days, it was taking forever to search for the autobackup. This let it start searching on the day the backup was made. The original problem I was having was due to the fact that the backup was taken from one host and the restore was going to another and I wasn't sending the old host name as the NB_ORA_CLIENT parameter. So it was searching backups from the new host for the data.

  • Restore to a different node with RMAN and EMC Networker

    Please, really need help :)
    I took hotbackup using RMAN catalog which went to tape. Here is the script for that:
    connect target sys/****@PROD;*
    connect rcvcat rman/***@catalog;*
    *run {*
    allocate channel t1 type 'SBT_TAPE';
    send 'NSR_ENV=(NSR_SERVER="**",NSR_DATA_VOLUME_POOL=Oracle)';*
    *backup database plus archivelog;*
    *release channel t1;*
    My settings include control file autobackup as follows:
    *RMAN> show all;*
    *RMAN configuration parameters are:*
    *CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 10 DAYS;*
    *CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default*
    *CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;*
    *CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;*
    *CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' TO '/NMO_%F/';*
    *CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default*
    *CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default*
    *CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default*

    *CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default*

    *CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default*
    *CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/data/backups/PROD/hotbkp/snapcf_PROD.f';*
    I am trying to restore this backup that is on tape (EMC Networker) to a different node. I can do this outside of Networker without any problems. However, when I try to get the backup from tape I have this issue:
    1. initPROD.ora is created and modified accordingly on a new server
    2. Export sid, startup nomount on new server
    export ORACLE_SID=PROD (on this new server)
    *rman target /*
    *startup nomount*
    3. I then run the following and get this error:

    Do a list command to see if the controlfile backup is on tape.
    RMAN> list backup of controlfile;
    I suggest you to read the manual of EMC Networker or call EMC on how to restore the database to another node. I am using Veritas Netbackup, it may be similar to EMC Networke for your reference. There are a few things that need to be followed when you restore database to another node:
    1) set DB_ID, which you have done
    2) set NB_CLIENT (in your case NSR_CLIENT) to the primary node from where backup was taken
    3) configure the backup server to allow redirect restore between the two nodes.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to restore a database from host A to host B by using RMAN

    Hi there
    I wanted to restore 1 database from machine A to machine B with the differente files systemes. I did these steps below, but I have a problem when I restore the controlfile from machine A to machine B.
    1-copy the controlfile from machine A to machine B by using OS utility.
    2-startup nomount the database on machine B.
    3-connect target and catalog RMAN.

    I'm also trying to restore a full RMAN backup to our DR site using Netbackup as MML
    My scenario is:

    I m afraid if i execute the real restore command it will apply this extra archivelog from LEVEL 1 CUMMULATIVE BACKUP

    Yes that is true,but my question is when i run crosscheck i have all the required archivelogs availiable (6 archivelogs) but when i execute restore archivelog validate why it give (6+1) archivelogs why not only those 6 from LEVEL 0 hot backup
    i have clearly specified UNTIL TIME "TO_DATE('24.05.2012 12:03:07','dd.mm.yyyy hh24:mi:ss')" in restore archivelog validate but still it also give me extra archive log backup piece from LEVEL 1 backup taken way after TO_DATE('24.05.2012 12:03:07','dd.mm.yyyy hh24:mi:ss').

  • RMAN Restore is asking for 3 days tapes in place of 1 day tape

    Hi All,
    I'm doing oracle disaster recovery through RMAN and VERITAS on Solaris machine. Version detail is as follows:
    Oracle: 8i (8.1.7.4)
    Veritas: 5.1
    Solaris: 8 (5.8)
    Script to restore and recover database
    run {
    allocate channel c1 type 'sbt_tape';
    restore database;
    recover database;
    Daily we are doing full RMAN backup (Level 0). I've restored the catalogs of veritas upto 16th Jan. Catalog Database (RMAN) is upto latest (16th). While restoring, its asking for 3 days tapes (12 Jan,13 Jan,14 Jan). Why it is asking for 3 days tapes and why not it asking only latest tapes that is of 15 th Jan. How can it possible for me to restrict it only one day and that is of choice means if I want to restore/recover until 13 then I should provide tape of 13th Jan only and If I want to recover upto 15th then I should provide tapes of 15th Jan only.
    Regards
    Rakesh

    What do you mean by doing disaster recovery through net vertias ? what made this situtation to accour at your end ? And what are the techniques you are using to accomplish disaster recovery , by seeing your commands i believe it is just a simple restore and recovery .one more thing i like to ask is What do you mean by saying the you restored the catalog to 16th of jan ?

  • Restoring root file system from netbackup

    Recently one of the hard disk containing root file system in my T2000 got many hard errors suddenly but the system continued to run. I dont have os mirroring. So I took backup of the root file system using veritas netbackup & restored those in the second hard disk. Also installed boot block for the same. I tried booting from the second hard disk & it booted, came to the prompt. But i found that most of the commands are not working. I tried df -h & it gave me error message like "unable to open /etc/mnttab". Is this approach incorrect?
    My guess is that it doesnt work as i dint set partition table same for both the disks.

    You need to use the baremetal backup/restore options with Netbackup to make backups of your operating system. It's generally recommended that you make a backup of your OS in single user mode, or booted from alternate media, so that you don't make backups of open files.
    Another backup method would be to use something like ufsdump for ufs filesystems, or ZFS send/receive
    and when you do restore, first boot in single user mode from cd so that you can update the files that still point to the old disk location, like the /etc/vfstab (for ufs) and to update the device paths with a reconfiguration reboot.

  • Restore controlfile from tape backup without autobackup setting on

    I am testing a scenraio of restoring control file if we loose all control files.
    My RMAN settings for CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP is OFF. But, I have taken a backup of controlfile using 'BACKUP CURRENT CONTROL FILE' .
    When I tried to restore control file. I am receiving following error:
    RMAN> run {
    2> allocate channel c101 type sbt_tape;
    3> restore controlfile ;
    4> }
    allocated channel: c101
    channel c101: sid=153 devtype=SBT_TAPE
    channel c101: VERITAS NetBackup for Oracle - Release 6.0 (2006110304)
    Starting restore at 24-MAY-2007 13:44:59
    using channel ORA_DISK_1

    RMAN-03002: failure of restore command at 05/24/2007 13:44:59
    RMAN-06563: control file or SPFILE must be restored using FROM AUTOBACKUP
    My question is, How can I restore control file from tape backup without CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP setting ON.
    It sounds like, There is no way we can restore control file from tape backup if you've not set the CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP is ON.
    Please advice

    When all controlfiles are lost and a recovery catalog is NOT used, RMAN has no information , where to find the controlfile backup. It's not enough to specify the channel, such a channel could hold many different backups from many different databases. You have tell , which database and which backupset. Modify your run block:
    SET DBID <DBID of the database,for which you want to restore the controlfile>;
    RESTORE CONTROLFILE FROM <name_of_backupiece_which_contains_the_controlfile backup>';

  • Restore backup pieces from tape to disk

    Hello,
    I want to restore the backup pieces from tape to disk.   Is there any way of getting those bacup pieces to disk.
    I have contacted storage team, that they can't copy the files, only through rman utility the files can be used.
    I just need to restore the files from tape to disk.  No, need to restore the database.  I just need this for future purpose...
    Thanks,
    Ramesh G

    You can try to use LIST BACKUP to get the backup piece name and then use Veritas tool to restore the backup piece from tape to disk.

  • Spfile restore from RMAN Tape backup to different server

    Hi All,
    First of all let me thank you to the forum from which I keep updating my knowledge on oracle.
    I am having issues when trying to restore spfile from controlfile autobackup to different server. Problem and other details are below:
    Target version : 10.2.0.2
    Netbackup : 6.5.6
    Taken the tape backup through rman on server ABC and trying to restore the spfile from controlfile autobackup to server XYZ. Tape backup has been taken today morning and trying restore now.
    Both servers ABC and XYX have been added (as clients) to netbackup policy.
    Below is the syntax I used for restoring spfile and getting error as mentioned.
    RMAN> run {
    2> set controlfile autobackup format for device type 'SBT_TAPE' to '%F';
    3> allocate channel ch00 device type 'sbt_tape'
    4> parms='ENV=(NB_ORA_SERV=Mediaserver,NB_ORA_CLIENT=XYZ)';
    5> restore spfile to pfile '/oracle/product/10g/dbs/inittest.ora' from
    6> autobackup maxseq 5 maxdays 3;
    7> }
    executing command: SET CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT
    allocated channel: ch00
    channel ch00: sid=36 devtype=SBT_TAPE
    channel ch00: Veritas NetBackup for Oracle - Release 6.5 (2010042405)
    Starting restore at 03-AUG-2011

    channel ch00: looking for autobackup on day: 20110801
    channel ch00: no autobackup in 3 days found
    released channel: ch00

    RMAN-06172: no autobackup found or specified handle is not a valid copy or piece
    Not sure where I am doing wrong. The same can be restored onto same host (I.E ABC) without any issues .
    Request your help and guidance.
    Thanks,
    SSS

    I don't know whether you can restore to a different server. The easier way should be
    RMAN> restore spfile to pfile 'YOUR_PFILE_NAME' from autobackup;
    then copy this to the new host.
    Check this link
    restore spfile to another host
    Hope this helps
