Verizon 4S doesn't connect to GSM in an environment with GSM

I just bought the 4S before going to China this Tuesday.  I arrived in Shanghai and my phone wasn't connecting to any 3G service, however i could place calls and send SMS's. I called up Verizon to ask for help and they in turn called up Apple.  As it turns out, apparantly the 4S software is unable to connect to GSM when you are in a country that has CDMA and GSM (e.g. China, US, Israel).  B/C of this, my iphone has virtually become a glorified ipod touch, that i can only connect to the internet during wireless connections.
In the 'About' section, the carrier listed on my phone says 'Verizon 11.1' and it doesn't give me the option to update it.  I have tried to reset my network settings in hopes that it will drop the Verizon and pick up a local provider (China Mobile or China Unicom).  As i will not be back in the US for 3 weeks, i cannot do a '*228' update or anything like that.
I am utterly dissapointed in the fact that Apple would release an Iphone with a oversight like this.  Now i am stuck in china with no access to email or internet on my phone for 3 weeks.  If the fix doesn't come through in some sort of software update soon, i will be returning my iphone (first one) and switching back to what works.
Any help would be appreciated!
David

You'll probably have to try restoring your phone (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414).  You can back it up first, which will save your applications data.  You can then resotre to this backup to return the application data to the phone.
Prior to restoring, do the following:
Sync with iTunes to transfer your purchases to your iTunes library and back up your phone.
Confirm that your phone it backed up by going to iTunes preferences and check the Devices tab to confirm that the backup is listed
Import your photos and videos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083)
Back up your contacts (by, for example, syncing them with iCloud: Settings>iCloud>Contacts>On)

  • Since the software upgrade connecting to hotspot from my iphone with my ipad is not working.

Since the software upgrade , I cannot connect my ipad2 to my iphone 4s via the phones hotspot.  Regular wifi is ok.  Is anyone else having this problem?  I tried resetting the network settings on the ipad, but it didn't help.  The ipad sees the hotspot, but doesn't connect.  My phone service is with Verizon.

I think I solved the problem.  I did a network reset on both the ipad and iphone.  So far so good.

  • Can't connect to GSM networks - What's the problem ?

I am using a iPhone 5 (US/Verizon model) in Canada with a Telus pre-paid sim card and am having connectivity issues
At times it connect to the GSM network and is operational for about 24-48 hrs. Then, it either displays "No service" or "searching" in areas that clearly have connectivity.
In addition to the problems reported on this thread, I am also experiencing an additional issue - that being that the phone seems to not be able to get past the SIM unlock screen.
Specifically, I changed the default Telus SIM PIN code from 0000 to another number. when I power off/on the phone I am not able to get past the SIM unlock screen.
I have tried resetting network settings, toggling Airplane mode and soft reseting the phone to no avail
As with others, am interested to know if this might be a hardware issue or something that could be fixed by verizon, or a software update by Apple.

The Verizon iPhone 5, is a CDMA/GSM World Phone. Which means if one is roaming outside the US, the phone can connect to both CDMA and GSM network. Furthermore, as the phone is sold GSM UNLOCKED by Verizon, one can insert another carrier's nano-sim and have it work on their network to not be charged roaming charges

  • IPhone 5 doesn't connect to iTunes, although I just synchronized my iPhone 3.

I just bought an iPhone 5 and would like to sync with content from iPhone 3. When configurating the iPhone, I chose the option to connect to iTunes. However, it was impossible to click on File/ synchronize iPhone, as it was greyed out!
As I wanted to use it straight off, I had to chose the configuration option "use as new device" (or similar).
How do I sync with iTunes now? It still doesn't connect to my iTunes account.

I have an IPhone 4 that turns off on its own. When I plug the phone into an outlet, it says to connect to iTunes. When i connect my phone to itunes, the screen displays the apple icon and doesn't connect to iTunes.  I need to backup info on this phone so I can apply my back up to a new iPhone. Is there any another way i can do this? My older phone will not show it's connected to iTunes. I used iCloud on the phone with problems, but I didn't back up all the info thru iCloud. Is there another way to back up?

Sounds like your phone is in recovery mode.  In this case, all data on it is gone.  There's nothing to back up.

My iphone 4 doesn´t connect through Wi-Fi, Apple replaced my phone for a new one, but the new one  has the same problem. I have an ipod third generation and it doesn´t have this problem. Having compared both working at the same time, the iphone alsways lags behind or doesn´t even connect to the internet via Wi-Fi. Does any one know what to do?? Thanks

Have you ever checked to see if there is an update for your router? If yes, then power off router. Then on iPhone go into settings and do a reset network settings. Power router back on, and try connecting phone to router.

  • My mac doesn't connect to my home network by default

My computer doesn't connect to my Airport basestation by default. The WiFi at the top bar is not connected, if I click on the WiFi symbol I see my connection and 2 of my neighbors, but none are connected by default. I always have to manually select my basestation. When I open Safari for the 1st time I get a "not connected to the Internet" type error. When I click diagnose and walk through the steps of selecting my location and basestation it connects without an issue.
I've gone into the System Preferences and tried to create a new location, but no luck. When I look in System Preferences and click into 'Advanced' my network is the only one listed in the Preferred Networks window. Why does it not connect by default. If I restart the computer I have to manually select my network again.

Have you tried deleting the SSID in the Preferred Networks section and then reentering it?

    hello,
it's been like 2 weeks since I did the update of itunes and everything to get my ipod shuffle 4th generation, and also did all the troubleshooting from the apple page, and nothing happens. It doesn't connect to itunes or windows.
anyone of you have the same problem or know how to solve it??
    thx a lot!!

I'm having the same problem, my brand new Ipod shuffle isn't recognized by my pc, or Itunes. I have tried everything suggested in troubleshooting. Did I just waste $50 on something that doesn't work? I'm afraid if I send the Ipod back for another one I will have the same problem. Any suggestions ?

  • Google apps doesn't connect using exchange option in mail while on 3G

    Hello,
I have been using google apps for over two years and it has been working perfectly on my iPhone. I set up my email using the exchange option and its been running without incident. I also have my gmail setup using exchange and it too has been working fine for years.  About 2 months ago I had my iPhone 5 replaced by apple under warranty and on the new device  I was no longer able to setup my gmail using exchange. I then read that google stopped supporting exchange for new iOS devices. However, my google apps account continued to work perfectly until a few days ago. It suddenly stopped connecting to my account. I did a few experiments and noticed that it works perfectly when connected via wifi or on Edge but not on 3G. It's strange that it just doesn't connect on 3G. To troubleshoot I deleted the account and added it again but that didn't solve the problem.  I also restored the phone but that didn't help either. Finally I changed my SIM card and that didn't help too.
Does anyone have any idea why this is and how I can solve this issue?
    Regards,
    Saeed

Thanks for the reply. This explains why my gmail account doesn't work using exchange. However, google apps is a paid service and hence should work using exchange.
What did google say when you contacted them? It's their service.
Also, I am able to connect using Edge and wifi but not while on 3G.
Connect to what? Are you saying Google Apps works on Edge, but not 3G? Or are you saying you can't connect to the Internet at all over 3G?
