Verizon 890L Slooooow Even with Strong Connection

Even with 4-5 WAN bars, the device won't connect at more than 1xCDMA.  My client reports that if he holds the device in just the right place in his house (~5 miles out of town, I live in town) he can get a 3G connection.  We live in a small town in the high desert of north-central Oregon, so it would not be surprising if there was only one tower visible from our location.  His HP G60 had random problems with making a WiFi connection to the device.
I have updated the BIOS and all the drivers on his laptop.  My Thinkpad has never had any trouble making a WiFi connection, but suffers the same extreme WAN performance problems.
I can't seem to get the device to even check for a firmware update.  I have been through every option in both the device's menu, and its http GUI.  The device's menu has a "Software Update" option, but the only option on the menu is "Status," which seems to do absolutely nothing.other than pop up an EMPTY screen with Name and Status fields.

Sounds like an issue with the Jetpack and not with your computer.
First steps are to perform the standard resets and hope that the issue is temporary.  For a performance problem like the one you describe I would suggest removing the SIM card for around 15-30 seconds and trying again in an area that is known to have strong coverage.  The next reset would be to press and hold the Restore Defaults button while the device is powered on.  Between these two resets the Jetpack should be able to recover if the problem was temporary.
Anything beyond that should get called into VZW for servicing under the warranty.

    you may have a strong wifi signal but what kind of speed are you getting,
    are you able to connect to wifi and see if it goes any faster then?
    it might just be that the cellular data connection is slow

    Even with nothing connected, I get this error message:
    Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled.
    I have restarted a few times and restarted in safe mode, and reset the PRAM and it is still there.
    Any ideas?

    Even with the mouse and keyboard unplugged, I got the same error message. It always gives me 5 warning messages in 5 separate dialog boxes. The 2 USB ports on the front of the machine are disabled, and the 3 in the back are ok.
    Profiler recognizes the "Hub in Apple Pro Keyboard" that lists the keyboard and the USB laser mouse (Logitec).
    I'll give the SMC reset a try, but I have read in another thread where it didn't work for the guy with the problem, and his final solution was a complete re-install of the system software. I'm thinking maybe an upgrade to Lion 10.7 might fix it without having to rebuild my whole computer. I'm using 10.6.8.
    -I'm still perplexed.

  • MiFi 4510l Set to LTE Only But Switches to 3G Even with Strong Signals

    I switched my 4510l to LTE only since it wasn't working properly when set to Global.  It seems to prefer 3G signals when it is in this mode.  Now my problem is the MiFi will switch to 3G even though signals appear to be strong on 4G.  See below.

    Currently, the MiFi is on 3G and not switching back to 4G until I reboot it.

    If the MiFi is no longer under warranty then the VZW store reps will not likely be able to help you.  You could try your luck but unless we are overlooking something very simple chances are the random store rep is not going to be of much technical assistance.  Store reps are there to sell devices, not fix them.  You wont get far with phone support either after they discover your device is out of warranty.  Although Phone Support should be able to at least confirm the WiFi password for your device so you can rule out that uncertainty.
    A store rep is more likely to assist you with replacement options.  Either upgrading your device to the next one in line or considering replacing it all together with a different model at full retail.  I believe the MiFi 5510L retails at 199.00 and is the cheapest one you can buy at the moment without discounts.
    I am unfamiliar with re-flashing the 4510 with the current version of firmware.  Its possible the update will not take because it is unable to overwrite the current version.  I would save that option as a last resort incase it goes bad and really bricks the device.
    You might want to try connecting to the MiFi on a different computer just to see if it can be done.  That could help us isolate a problem on your current computer as opposed to the MiFi.

    For the past few months I have noticed my  DSL connection has a limited connectivity issue and after it does connect my home page flashes and takes over 3 to 4 minutes to load this happens every time I use my internet explorer icon to connect. When I use my msn I have no problems. I would like to know if anyone else has had this experience also  

    Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

  • Satellite P50t-A - Forced hibernation even with power connected

    Hello,
    I have a Satellite P50t-A where the battery appears to be failing. It is reading 0% and the charger is periodically charger is turning on and off. When it stops charging (about every 5 mins), the computer run for a period then enters forcefully enters hiberation. This hiberation occurs eveen when the power is connected. Why is it entering hiberation even when the power is connected? Why does battery status has precedence over a stable power?
    I have ordered a new battery and waiting for its arrival. In the interim, how to force the laptop to run on power (ignore the battery status)? If I open up the laptop and remove the battery, will it run with the power connected and the battery removed?

    Update. Disassmebled laptop and disconnected the battery. It now powers up now and the battery monitor reports "no battery detected". After running it for a period, the forced hiberation no longer occurs.

  • Can't get online- even with strong signal- HELP PLEASE!!!

    I have an ibook G4 with an Airport Extreme Card. For the past few months I have been able to go online at home, with absolutely no problems. My desktop at home is a PC with high-speed modem and a wireless router connected. I also travel to school on a regular basis and can connect wirelessly there as well. My problem is, that for the past few days, I can't get online at home. I have a strong signal with the airport card, but both Safari and Firefox say "not connected to the internet" and tell me to refer to Network Diagnostics. I can't figure out why I can't get online. I have been at school during this time with the same laptop and have gone online with no problems at all. Not only that, but both my desktop at home, along with another laptop with wireless capabilities can also go online with no difficulties. I am new to Mac's so I don't have alot of knowledge. I am not sure if maybe my Network settings are wrong?? Any advice anyone could give would be sooo helpful. I have been pulling my hair out for days over this!

    Try the following:
    Delete Preferred Network(s)
    - System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
    - In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
    - Delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list
    Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
    - Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
    - Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    - Restart, or log out then back in.
    Add Preferred Network(s)
    - System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
    - In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
    - Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
    - Restart or log out then back in.

  • Airport utility cannot find my Airport Express, repeated rescans, nothing, even with direct connect via Ethernet. Help!

    I use Airport Express to stream iTunes to my home stereo. This is the ONLY thing I use it for. It quit working and now Airport Utility cannot find the Airport Express unit, even after repeated re-boots of all components, resetting the Airport Express, even when connected directly to my router via Ethernet. I use a D-Link wirless router.
    I downloaded the latest Airport Utility, but it will NOT work with XP (from the Apple website, not my words).
    The Airport Express will achieve a solid green indicator after reset, but Airport Utility cannot find it. Until Utility can find and recognize the Airport Express hardware, I cannot adjust or reset any settings, etc.
    Help!

    The latest version of AirPort Utility.....5.6.1.....will only run on a Windows 7 machine.
    Try AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows (make sure that  you have Service Pack 3 installed on your PC, otherwise the application will not run on an XP machine).
    The Airport Express will achieve a solid green indicator after reset, but Airport Utility cannot find it.
    After a "hard reset" or "factory default reset", the light will not be green.....it will be slowly flashing amber after it restarts. See this Apple support document for more information on various resets:

  • Rent Movies, Even With Slow Connection?

    With the new Apple TV, is it possible to rent Movies even if you have a really slow (e.g 0.5Mbps) internet connection?
    If you start a rental in the morning, and leave it downloading all day, will the Apple TV automatically use its 8GB of cache to store the file so that it will play continuously from start to finish, without needing to stream?

    Funnily enough I've not rented anything on it yet, but I firmly believe it will load the whole movie into the solid state buffer. If it did not do this people would be very frustrated if they decided to go back a couple of chapters after the phone rang for instance and they forgot to pause.
    Until I try a rental I can't say for certain, but it would seem quite illogical (which is no guarantee) not to store the whole rental on the unit to allow for predownloading on slower connections but also for replay and chapter selection/skips/ff/rw purposes during the rental playback period.
    The big unanswered question for me (maybe someone else has figured out by now) is how the 8GB of solid state memory is dished out and what purges existing content in the solid state memory.
    For example - a single HD rental should fit in that 8GB, possibly two. However say the user has 2GB of photos streaming, do they have priority for memory usage ovr rentals or vice versa? The iPad has a 16GB limit for photos (or did in older OS), even on a 32GB/64GB machine, so maybe only 1-2MB is reserved for photo caching on ATV2, maybe the whole 8Gb is available, who knows?
    Certainly local media from iTunes seems to cache to the unit, and quicker than ATV1, so the danger if the memory management is illogical is that any activity you do while caching an HD rental could potentially flush the cached rental in order to play the local media, but this would be daft and I hope they would reserve enough solid state memory for the rental and force the local media to cache in a smaller segment even if it meant repeatd cacheing to watch the whole thing (done transparently to the user).
    What if you rent two HD movies?
    Does the first download to the cache then the 2nd?
    Do they download concurrently?
    If they're too big for 2 in the cache does 1 of them flush the other rental out to maker room?
    IMO this is all a bit vague and unpredictable.

    Same problem here. Win7 32.
    Only the process appears, but no browser window.
    Just a wild idea i had. I do have one other issue with the same computer that also shows the 3.6.4 problem. It has to do with the folder app in Picasa. I mean the one where one can decide which folder needs to be scanned or ignored and so forth. Every time I start this Picasa freezes instantly. I tried numerous things already. Perhaps both those processes are somehow somehow connected. Just a wild guess though.
    I will send the debugging info over the weekend.

  • Very slow Wi-Fi with strong connection

    i have a problem, i'm not sure if im doing anything wrong. im not sure if it is my phone that is the problem or the wi-fi connection at my house or what. here it is, i have very slow wifi and sometimes i turn off the wi-fi and edge is faster! i want to address this problem myself because my iphone is unlocked and i voided the warranty. although google is very fast on wi-fi, my facebook page takes around 3 minutes to load with the stongest wi-fi connection. other websites are the same thing. google seems to be the only fast website on my wi-fi connection. i believe my iphone running on edge is faster. i havent compared yet, but it seems so. i have also tryed forgetting the network and connecting back to it with the password and nada. if anyone knows how to address this problem, please fill me in! much appreciated! thanks!

  • Can't enable eprint even with network connected

    Windows 8 computer network is connected but eprint won't enable HP8600.  Have followed directions for pushing refresh button.  Still disabled. 

    Try the steps below.  Make sure nothing is entering under proxy address.
    1. Open an internet browser type printer's IP address.
    2. Should bring you to the printer's status page.
    3. Select network tab at the top.
    4. Left hand side select IPv4 under wireless.
    5. Under DNS address Configuration select Manual DNS Server.
    6. For Preferred enter 8.8.8.8
    7. For Alternate enter 8.8.4.4
    8. Select apply. You might get a warning saying this could interrupt connection that's fine.
    9. Turn printer off for about 30 seconds then try again.
    Let me know it goes.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac. 
    These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. 
    Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. 
    Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands. 
    Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply. 
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

    Test while started in Recovery : if the problem persists, then it likely is a hardware issue.
    Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) probably won't change anything, but you can readily do it before contacting the repairers.

  • Ipad with Verizon Hotspot on iPhone - Won't Connect

    Has anyone been able to connect their iPad with their Verizon iPhone Hotspot? I can connect my wifes iPod, but when I connect my iPad, it connects, but then it says internet is not active.
    The Phone shows the connection, but I don't get a wireless symbol on my iPad, even though in settings it shows as connected to my iPhone.

    Verizon hotspot worked fine with my Droid X, but I dumped the droid for my iPhone on Thursday.

    I have done a full restore of the ipad and before I restored the backup I tried to connect to the iphone and it would not.
    Any thoughts?
