Verizon Blocking Access to Mail Servers outside the United States

I spent almost two hours with Verizon representatives yesterday after having spent 10 days in Canada without ever being able to access the pop.verizon.net email server.  Although the information does not seem to be well known throughout Verizon, several officials confirmed that as of September 14, Verizon has made the decision to block all IP addresses outside the United States trying to communicate with Verizon's email servers.
Parenthetically, Verizon Wireless was also unaware of this change in policy but was most interested to learn about it given the impact it would have.  It would also help explain why there were many customers who suddenly found their smartphones to be significantly less useful when traveling internationally.
I asked repeatedly whether the Verizon community had been made aware of this change in policy and several individuals within Verizon confirmed that no such corporate communication was ever made, despite the fact that this change has a dramatic impact on those who travel outside the United States.  They conceded that this should have been done, but of course no one seems to know where the decision within the corporation was made about this policy and who might be "empowered" to actually consider the impact on the Verizon user community and communicate with it in a transparent manner.
I find this behavior on Verizon's part to be appalling.  Even if security concerns drove this decision, I can't but help feel that it is Verizon's arrogance that led them to believe that this change in policy should not be communicated to the Verizon community.
I have made my view known to some individuals--would suggest that others do so as well--although I am skeptical that anyone within the Verizon heirarchy cares.  Hopefully I'm wrong.

The response highlights the problems of dealing with Verizon.  It's totally non-responsive to the issue.
In point of fact, I am not locked out of my individual account, nor do I have any difficulty in downloading emails from the pop.verizon.net email server when I am accessing it from a US-based IP address.  The problem is that IP addresses outside the US are being rejected.  Thus while traveling internationally and trying to access my account from a hotel, coffee shop, etc. the server is now programmed by Verizon not to respond.
Thank you.

We have asked them to clarify the message and they finally have, but not necessarily what you want to hear.
"Additionally, we have implemented measures to prevent future unauthorized access attempts which may affect your ability to access your Verizon.net email from locations outside the U.S. If you experience difficulty reaching your Verizon.net email account, you can always access it online at mail.verizon.com or through the Verizon My FiOS app for mobile devices. For further information see the Verizon Webmail FAQs. "
I think they are also still accepting whitelist requests for Foreign ISP's.

  • How do you use an iPhone outside the United States?

    I'm going on vacation with my family and I was wondering how can your iPhone 4S with Verizon Wireless to take pictures and listen to music without being charged for roaming if you'll be traveling outside the United States? I have heard that you can your iPhone if you turn on Airplane mode but I am not sure if this is true or do you have to turn off a certain thing on the iPhone?

    Airplane mode turns off all radios.
    The iPhone includes the ability to enable wi-fi and Bluetooth access with Airplane mode enabled so you can access the internet with your iPhone via an available wi-fi network and/or access a Bluetooth device such as speakers or a headset. Being able to place or receive and calls and the same for SMS/MMS and cellular data access is prevented with Airplane mode enabled.

    I’m sorry your computer is requiring service, but I’m glad to hear that you purchased a Geek Squad Protection plan as it’s helpful for situations like this. While you are correct in that repair costs may be reimbursed, it can be hard to identify which service centers are authorized to repair your computer underneath your plan.

  • Does it cost any money when you imessage outside the United States?

    Does it cost any money when you imessage outside the United States?

    It shouldn't if it is truely an iMessage and you are using wi-fi, such as your home LAN.
    There is a difference in cellular SMS text messages and iMessages. The other person must have an iOS device and you must both have an internet connection. The conversation will appear in blue.

  • Why Would iTunes turn me off and not allow me to Purchase Content while outside the United States?

    I have been living outside of the USA for 7-months.  I have been purchasing and viewing content that is stored in my iCloud again without any issues.  Today, while attempting to purchase a movie I received an error message saying that I need to contact Support.  I chatted with a rather robotic Support Representative and after a 10 minute review of my account he stated 'all looks good on my end' then, he asked me to hold on for an additional few minutes and said that he could not tell me the reason why my account was 'frozen' but referred me to the iTunes terms and conditions.  I repeatidly asked what was wrong and he refused to answer me.  After a heated back and forth he referred me to Paragraph B in the terms and conditions and it states that content can only be used while in the USA or its possessions or territories.  I told the chat rep that I live in two countries and was curious how I would fix this situation.  The rep was mum and would not reply to me.
    Does anyone have any feedback?  I am unsure what the big deal is. I am paying for content and simply viewing it while traveling.  Why would Apple insist on such a requirement in this very global world we live in.

    They are part of the US store's terms (terms that you have agreed to) :
    The iTunes Service is available to you only in the United States, its territories, and possessions. You agree not to use or attempt to use the iTunes Service from outside these locations. Apple may use technologies to verify your compliance.
    (Other countries terms  will be similar)
    It's like that at the requirement of the content providers, they want control over where their content is available - each country therefore has to have its own store and you have to be in a country (and have a billing address in that country on your account) to use its store. That applies to both buying new content and redownloading past purchases.
    Have you not got a copy of all of your downloads on a backup ? There is no guarantee that any item will remain in the store for redownloading (you are only guaranteed one download of any item), a rights-holder could remove an item from the store at any time.

  • Using Online Number Outside the United States

    I currently a Skype Online number and a good amount of Skype credit.
    The number is based in the United States.
    My wife and I will be spending considerable time outside the US. We'll be traveling extensively in Mexico and Canada.
    Is this going to be a problem using my US Online number?
    Even though most of our time will be outside the US, can I continue to use my US number?
    Thanks!

    Yes you can.

  • TV SERIES outside the United States

    How's it possible to purchase tv episodes from american tv in Europe with my account in iTunes? Totally impossible? What if I buy itunes checks online and I used them for buying those episodes? would it work??
    I'm fan of TV series already being broadcasted in USA. If it were possible to download them in Europe paying in itunes... free solutions like Bittorrent wouldn't working so well.

    This is an oft-asked question. You can't.
    As users, we have no knowledge of why something is or is not available on any of the music stores. What is available is based on negotiations between Apple and the various rights holders and Apple has to negotiate with a different set of rights holders in each country.

  • Someone calling you from outside the United States

    If my friend calls me from Australia and they use either a land line or a cell phone. Am I going to get charged extra at all even if my plan is older on my cell phone? I only get 500 shared minutes a month at the moment for all types of minutes except M2M. Also what type of minutes am I going to eat (i.e: my everyday plan minutes or roaming) if I am currently in my home state in the US? Also is it going to show up on the bill differently then normal than any other type of call?
    Feedback and such would be much appreciated! Thanks

    As long as you are in the US when you receive their call, you will not get charged anything extra for receiving this call.

  • How to unlock my Samsung S3 for use outside the United States?

    Good day. I'm in Colombia and bought a team of your company on ebay, but I can not use in my country. Could you send me a code or useful instructions how to do with cellular networks here

    Hey
    I understand you’d like to use an AT&T locked device on another network! I can help you with that!
    You can request an unlock for your device by visiting http://att.com/deviceunlock/ and reviewing the requirements. If you are eligible per the requirements, continue on to the unlock form and submit your personal and device information. Upon submitting, you will receive an email from which you must confirm your request within 24 hours. Your unlock request will then be processed within 2 business days, at which point we will email you with our decision!
    I hope this helps!

  • Why does ABC family say im not located in the United States when i try to watch a video?

    Okay so i went to the website ABC Family to watch pretty little liars an it wouldnt play the videos. It says ''error 403-1, You appear to be outside the United States or its territories. Due to international rights agreements, we only offer this video to viewers located within the United States and its territories.'', and I'm in Missouri which is dead center in the United States. This computer hasnt been outside of the US, so i dont understand why its saying that. I checked the time zone on my computer as well an its in the right time zone. So if theres any way you can help me that would be great.
    Thanks.

    hello denverniccole, websites will detect your location based on the public ip address your internet service provider assigns to you: http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/network-location/
    there's not much you or the browser can do to change that - if you suspect that your location is wrongly determined, please contact ABC's support & explain the situation...

  • How to access a class file outside the package?

    created a two java files Counter.java and TestCounter.java as shown below:
    public class Counter
         public void print()
              System.out.println("counter");
    package foo;
    public class TestCounter
         public static void main(String args[])
              Counter c = new Counter();
              c.print();
    Both these files are stored under "D:\Test". I first compiled Counter.java and got Counter.class which resides in folder "D:\Test"
    when i compile TestCounter.java i got the following error message:
    D:\Test>javac -classpath "d:\Test" -d "d:\Test" TestCounter.java
    TestCounter.java:6: cannot find symbol
    symbol : class Counter
    location: class foo.TestCounter
    Counter c = new Counter();
    ^
    TestCounter.java:6: cannot find symbol
    symbol : class Counter
    location: class foo.TestCounter
    Counter c = new Counter();
    ^
    2 errors
    what could be the problem. Is it possible to access a class file outside the package?

    ya that's fine..if we have two java files where both resides in the same package works fine or two java files which donot have a package statement also works fine. But my doubt is, i have a Counter.class which does not reside in a package and i have a TestCounter.class which resides in a package "foo", in such a scenario, how do i tell to the compiler that "Counter.class resides in such a path, please look at that and give me TestCounter.class". i cannot use import statement to import Counter.class in TestCounter.java because i donot have a package for Counter.java.
