Verizon down half a day, then suddenly free speed upgrade?

Well, this is not a complaint or support, but just curious. I hope its perminant and not temporary
Today 13-Oct-11 I found that the internet was gone for half the day. I got up to use the computer at 10am and notice no connection. Looked at the router and notice there was no dsl signal.  Reset the router, even shut it off and still no signal.. Check the phone and there was a dial tone..
Thought to myself maybe its just a minor outage so will be back up later.. not urgent anyways.  You would see the router DSL light turn a evil red color, and then go off, at one point the light stayed red for 30 sec before going out again.  2PM no internet still, I threw my hands up and said, well better stop slacking and get some errands done. Went out and came back about 5pm and the internet was up. I thought great its back..
Then sometime around 8 or 9 PM EST, the internet went down again.. and it had trouble connecting... so I thought to myself.. oh no not another outage.. about 5 min later the internet came back... but this time... I got faster speed then I normally get! I thought to myself AWSOME!!
How much faster did I get?
Normal 1784kbps down
                  384kbps up
Now I remember back then when they offered 3Mbps for the price I was paying, the person on the phone said that the 1.5Mbps was the best I can get for my line.. so I gave up and kept the default one, then after the outage I now got much better speed. I still don't get the 3Mbps.. but I think it was a fair trade... my new speeds are...
 New Speed: 2112kbps  down
                          832kbps   up
I checked the router and notice that the signal noise is the same nothing has changed, just suddenly more speed. I got OVER 2x the upload speed!! and a 300+kbps speed increase! This came after that weird 5 min of downtime we had.. We have more upload speed then what was given to residentials on the website.. ( can't find it now) Residents suppose to get up to 448Kbps upload and business suppose to get up to 1mbps on there ultimate plan but 768Kbps on the plans below that.
I really hope verizon did not make a mistake and everything will revert back to the old values, otherwise I might have to bug and call verizon to give me higher speeds because I know I can take it..
I just wonder if I reached my router limitation.. The router I have is a Westell 327W that is sort of going bad, was going to bug verizon to see if they will give me a new one, but since I got these much better speeds I don't wanna switch it out now
Here are my router stats if anyone is curious:
Transceiver Information          Downstream Path            Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec)                            2112                            832
  Margin (dB)                                                   20.5                          10.0
 Line Attenuation (dB)                                  53.0                           31.5
 Transmit Power (dBm)                              17.1                                   11.9
Since technically the 2112 is withing the 3Mb limit I hope I get to keep it, also I hope to keep the upload speed though I wonder if they set it to high since customers are suppose to be limited to 448Kbps? don't get me wrong I love the new upload. Websites and games seem much faster since we have had problem with people playing multiplayer while someone else is trying to load a video.
P.S The westell 327W Is the first or second gen it is only ADSL and not ADSL2 it is the A90 series.
P.P.S. I did a IP lookup and it looks like its about the same location though I don't know where the nearest co-location is so I assume its based about the area where the IP is?
Also anyone know if verizon has a new 2Mb tier setting? I think I read somewhere, they set you to 1.5Mbps tier or 3Mbps tier, but never heard of a 2Mb tier.
I do have old copper phone wires.. still hoping one day I get to at least 3Mbps.. but until then. I am acutally happy with these new speeds, (hope I don't see new charges and hope it don't revert back to the old 1.5mbps or nerf the upload speed. I kinda like having better upload for playing games with others online.)

Almost the exact same thing happened to me up in Woonsocket. Except DSL came back on at 7pm. First thing I did was check my stats on my Westell W327 A90-327W15-06 (had since 2005):
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec)     2112     864
Margin (dB)     16.0     10.0
Line Attenuation (dB)     49.0     31.5
Transmit Power (dBm)     16.7     11.9
The margin drops to 14 but the connection speed is still the same!! Was really thing of jumping to Cox (only other choice, if you call it that, in RI), for the past several weeks my speed would drop to below dialup speeds for a few hours a day. I know it's not on my end as they put a new drop from the pole to my house last year replacing the old wire that had been here since at least the '50s!! But if the speed stays I'll stick with Verzion as long as the price doesn't go up again. I noticed they jacked up my DSL portion of my bill $2 again to $33.99 and calling it Internet Extra.

  • Free Speed Upgrade - NOT FREE!

I signed up for the My Rewards to get the free speed upgrade advertised, and in my bill, there is a promo in there:
    Specials and Promotions
    7/25 8/24FiOS Quantum 1 Mo. Credit
    -10.00
Does this mean we will be seeing a $10 price hike next month? If so, this is blatant FALSE ADVERTISEMENT!

It sounds like you signed up for FiOS Quantum in addition to the free speed update.
Quantum is a TV product/service and has nothing to do with Internet speed.  I signed up for Rewards+ to get the free speed upgrade and I do not have that $10 credit, nor any mention of Quantum, on my current bill.

  • Why does my Apple Id password work one day then suddenly doesn't the next?

When I try to update an app it says my password is incorrect when I just used it to download an app yesterday? It hasn't changed.

It's not meant to be an answer, it's meant to be a suggestion.
    You'll notice I said, "Try"...
You can use the email form here >  Apple - Support - Mac App Store - Contact Support

  • I need to upgrade but don't know which version I have to get.  Do I have to go through each lower version or can I go straight to 10.8 then get free MAverick upgrade?  I live FAR from Apple store, so download upgrade is preferred.  :)

Need a newer version of Os to run printer and software.  Confused if I need to get which version to be able to upgrade to MAverick for free.  Also, need something I can download since Apple store is far away.

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X. For detailed information see this user tip:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271 )
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is still available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Before installation you should back up all your data.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes (you will need the latest version in order to synch with mobile devices).
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

  • One Year Free Speed Upgrade Confusion

Just received a letter from Verizon offering to double my download speed from 3.0 to 7.3M. Tried to do it on-line but the website listed in the letter wouldn't take my username and password info. Called the number in the letter to look into the upgrade. First agent I spoke to was all set to upgrade me then told me my 327 wireless router/modem could not handle the upgrade and I had to buy a new unit for $39.99. Didn't sound right to me so I told Verizon to forget it.
As things go with these call centers, I decided to try again with a different agent. This one told me my cost would actually increase because I didn't have bundled service. Wrong again - I do have bundled service - phone, broadband and wireless. Strike two!
Tried again and the third agent was clueless.
My past experience with Verizon has been good but this makes me wonder.

Ahh, I see what you're asking now.  Basically, you're wondering if, when Windows 10 comes out, will you get a retail license of Windows 10 to replace your 8.1 license, or an OEM license that's based on the machine that you upgraded.
Based on the statements from Microsoft, I'm guessing the upgrade will be an OEM license.  Gabe Aul, through his tweets, has been very clear to point out that upgrading a system to Windows 10 will get free updates
for the life of the system.  This, to me, sounds very much like an OEM license - the license, and free updates, offer dies when the system dies.
Now, Microsoft could change this offer so it upgrades your retail key as well - always allows you to activate as many Windows 10 machines as your retail key allows.  But based on the statements coming from Microsoft, I don't think
    is likely.
I was reading about the licenses the other day but it wasn't specific for Windows 10. But what it said basically when you buy a PC with OEM windows (Say a Dell). Your licensing is Dell basically licensing Windows to you.  Technically Dell could refuse
to do warranty work if you upgrade an OEM Home version with a retail Pro version.  I did actually have that happen to me once with Gateway. Once I told them I didn't buy Windows from them they said i needed to call MS even though it was a hardware issue.
The way MS used to do when a new OS was coming out they had OEM sell computers with the old OS and and agreement to get the new OS for free when it came out. You signed up and you actually got the upgrade for the OEM. People would get upset as some OEM's
were faster the others.  So they may do this the same way and if you have the retail you get it through MS.   That's just a guess.

  • BT Infinity free speed upgrade?

    Hi,
So in late 2011/ 2012 when Infinity gets boosted to 80Mbps, any news on whether current customers, Option 1 or 2, will be getting the upgrade to the faster speeds for free?
Any ideas when BT might announce this?
    Cheers.

It's definitely happening the question is will there be an extra charge for the speed increase.
Or will BT treat it like the ADSL to ADSL2+ exchange upgrades where people benefited from faster speeds for no increase in charges and not even having to start a new contract...
    http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/Plans-to-increase-speed/m-p/254793#M11724
Do you know the old saying !!!!!
    Hi Toekneem
Well I reckon Bt may have shot themselves in the foot..... If they are thinking of charging????
The reason I say that is because people in these "hard times" may feel happy on their 37Mbps and not fork out extra.
I have a dicky wireless n USB adapter where most times on turn on it only works at wireless g speeds around 21mbps and I often forget to switch it up to the n speed of 37Mbps.
Now you would think I'd notice this drop in speed but to be honest most times I don't.
So I wonder if I would really notice around 74mbps?
Now don't get me wrong if it was offered to me for say starting 18month contract again then I would probably take it just to impress my friend who are currently plodding along on 3Mbps with O2 and 4Mbps with TT.
It would really serve me right if it was only offered FREE to Infinity option 2 customers... me being on the economical opt 1

    Hi daveormond,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iMac. If you continue to have issues with your Mac shutting down part way through the boot up process, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful (given your description, it sounds like it could be either issue, or a combination of both):

Since iphone5 6.1.3 upgrade mine has been running hot and totally reduced the battery life. Before I was getting 2days out of it. Now it's half a day ... No new apps and I've been closing down fully all apps. I think something is definitely up with 6.1.3
Are there many others experiencing this?

The number of apps that run in the background are very few and far between. An app being in the recently used apps bar or dock means just that for the most part - the app was recently used only and is not running.
Have you powered your iPhone off and on and/or tried a reset which is similar to a computer restart since the update was installed?
Are you accessing an Exchange account with the Mail app on your iPhone?

  • IPhone 5 WIFI works half a day with any router it hasn't seen, then stops completely.

I was syncing some music through WIFI over my phone about a week ago and the WIFI cut out about halfway through syncing about 10 albums.  The list of networks shows the network, with full bars (everything I've done to attempt to fix it has been done within 5 feet of the router), and when you attempt to click Join, it either spins the cogwheel for 30 seconds or gives you the unable to join network pop-up.
    I have:
    Reset the iPhone
    Reset the router
    Reset the iPhone's network settings
Restored the iPhone from a backup
Restored the iPhone to factory defaults
Tried the router in different security settings, WEP, WPA, WPA2, and security completely disabled
Changed the channel on the router
Tried a few different router firmwares, including the latest
Switched to another Linksys WRT54G that I own and it wouldn't work either.
Switched from a Linksys WRT54G to a Netgear router.  It worked great with the Netgear for about half a day and upon waking up this morning, the problem is back and identical.  I've tried everything on this router that I did on the previous Linksys and it is still broken.
Going to run into the Apple store today and see what they say.  Everything's pointing to the phone.  Not sure if the latest firmware has flummoxed the WIFI, or if my launch iPhone's WIFI has cut out.  I'm just scared because it will join new networks for a short while before it quits and when they test it, it'll probably pickup their network.  Think I'm going to take my router into the store with me, but I'm unsure how much actual router knowledge their support will have.  Wish me luck!

If the problem is with every wi-fi network the iPhone has access to and connects with after restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup, the iPhone has a hardware problem with the wireless card or with something else.

  • Please can anyone tell me how to stop my 4s iPhone running down on the battery (despite fitting a brand new battery) and not holding charge for more than half a day - will the new update cure this problem?

My iPhone 4s will not hold a battery charge longer than half a day even if charged all night. I am now updating to 8.1.3 - does anyone know if this will make any difference?

Thank you for your help - I had the battery replaced in a phone shop in Bournemouth and think I need to take my phone in and ask them to check the battery but I have to have an operation on Thursday this week and may be a couple of weeks before I get chance to take the phone in - thank you for your helpful advice which I very much appreciate.
