Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 modem/router, and Airport Extreme

Useful info so you won't have to go through what I did.
Verizon ISP using the Westell 6100 modem/router & Airport Extreme.
The Westell 6100 was configured during installation as a modem and router with a direct connection to the Mac. You can actually connect Airport Extreme at this point with an ethernet connection to the Westell and it will work, but you can't do any of the sharing things (remote login, personal web sharing, etc.) To do those things the Westell needs to be in the Bridge mode. In a nutshell, you have to edit the Westell's VC configuration to establish Bridge mode, and disable its DHCP server. Then you have to set up the Airport to connect using PPPoE using the Account Name and Password from Verizon.
1. With the Westell connected directly to the Mac, access the device at 192.168.1.1.
a. Under VC Configuration the first of seven configurations should already be enabled as VPI 0, VCI 35 using PPPoE. Edit that one and change it to Bridge mode.
b. Under DHCP configuration, disable the DHCP server. You can also do this under the Private LAN Configuration page. If at the latter, do not attempt to disable the Private LAN (it won't let you anyway). Verizon tech support kept insisting I had to disable the Private LAN, which caused a great amount of anguish!
c. Before leaving 192.168.1.1 (you won't be able to access it again once the Airport is connected and configured) make sure you know your ISP account name and password. This was assigned during my setup procedure with Verizon, a random selection of letters and numbers.
2. Now hook up the Airport WAN to the Westell's ethernet port and the Mac to the Airport LAN. Fire up Airport Admin Utility.
a. Under the Internet tab, select Connect Using PPPoE.
b. Configure PPPoE using the Verizon Account Name.
c. Change password to the Verizon account password.
3. Restart and that's it.

Thank you for your post. When I moved to another home, Verizon sent me the Westell 6100 and I had been having trouble staying connected to the Internet with my Airport. Last night, I loss wireless access and the Airport status in the menu bar read "Looking for a PPPoE connection". Verizon customer support was able to get me back online, albeit with only a direct Ethernet connection between my iBook and the 6100.
I found your post and followed your instructions. Now all the iBooks in our household are back online via the Airport. Thank you very much!

  • Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 Modem and Linksys router

If anyone is having a hard time getting these three to work together to get on-line, I know your pain. I've spent the better part of two days trying to get these devices to talk to each other. After hours spent trying different combinations and little to no help from Verizon and Linksys I have finally gotten my DSL up and running through my Linksys router. I post this in hopes that someone doesn't spin their wheels like I have been doing over the past few days. Here's what I did to get them to work:
    1. Reset both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    2. Unplug the router and the modem
    3. Connect an ethernet cable from your Apple to the Westell modem and power it back on
    4. Type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser of choice. The username should be "admin" (w/o the quotes) and password should be "password" (again no quotes)
    5. It will ask you to update your username and password
    6. Under the CONFIGURATION heading select VC CONFIGURATION and click on EDIT
    7. Make sure that both PROTOCOL and MODE are set to BRIDGE
    8. Click on SET VC and then click OK when asked if you want to reset for new configuration to take affect
    9. Once again power off the modem for about a minute then power it back up
    10. Login again with the login you created above and go to the STATUS/ABOUT column and write down the MAC address
    11. Set it to DHCP OFF and change the Private Lan Modem IP to 192.168.2.1. Write this down and keep it so you can access your modem in the future.
    12. Save the settings. You will lose communication with the Westell at this point. Once again, power down the modem for about a minute.
    13. Connect the ethernet cable from the modem into the Internet port on the Linksys router and then connect your Apple to the first ethernet spot
    14. Turn on both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    15. With your browser (Safari or Firefox) type in 192.168.1.1. Under SETUP go to MAC ADDRESS CLONE and enter the MAC address you wrote down for your Westell modem earlier and then save the settings
    16. Make sure you are in DHCP mode and not PPPoE
    17. Save, exit, and you should be on-line
That was a lot more difficult than it had to be. I certainly didn't get this from the support folks from Linksys or Verizon...a lot of trial and error and investigating on-line. I hope this saves you from the headaches I experienced.

    Feedback for Linksys:
In the Linksys Help system "Easy Answers" there's the question "How can I set up a Linksys router with DSL Internet?" This is what I used to try and solve my Internet connection problem.
The Answer says "Most DSL providers use Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) ..." and goes on to explain how to set up the router for PPPoE. However, my service (AT&T/Yahoo high speed internet) uses DHCP. That meant I spent several frustrating hours trying to get it to work with PPPoE.
The Answer would have been better if it first explained how to tell if you have PPPoE or DHCP (see the reply from vness above, it's an excellent explanation), and then linked to the appropriate setup instructions.
    Thanks for the help!!!!

  • PS3, Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 Modem, WRT54GSv. 6 - Can't Get NAT Type 2...

    Hello everyone--
I just received a PS3 for Christmas. I connected it to my network wirelessly via my WRT54GS router and everything worked fine. After a connection test everything was found successfully, UPnP was available, & the NAT Type was 2. The only issue I noticed would be that I would be logged out of the Playstation Network a few minutes after I would turn on the PS3 or randomly during/after playing a game. However, I would simply just log back in and everything would be fine.
The problem began the next day because suddenly when I ran an internet connection test on my PS3, UPnP came up as being not available and the NAT Type was now 3. Now, I'm not exactly sure what could have possibly happened overnight as nothing was changed and the settings all remained the same.
My setup is as follows: I have my desktop computer wired to the router and my laptop, nintendo wii, & ps3 all connected wirelessly. My modem is in bridge mode  and the internet connection type is "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" as my area does not support PPPoE.
Basically I am posting to see if anyone has any suggestions on what I need to do to get my UPnP back to available & NAT Type back to 2. If there is any other information I need to post that would be helpful in finding a resolution to my problem, then please let me know.
I look forward to hearing a response from someone. Thanks in advance for your time and help.

  • Setup Modem/Router and AirPort Extreme running DHCP, NAT

I have a basic modem/router from my ISP which didn't always work very well, so upon suggestion instead of upgrading to a new one I purchased an airport express to use with the modem, since we mostly use apple devices at home.
The idea is to use the old modem/router strictly as a modem and use AirPort Express for everything else (routing & access point).
However I need some technical info to set this up, since I not very familiar with networking.
This is what I understand: In my old modem/router, I need to turn off wireless (it will be connected to the airport via Ethernet cable) and DHCP and NAT (if I can figure this out) as well as the firewall. After that, I should connect the airport to create a new wifi network and have it run DHCP & NAT (which will also provide firewall services)
    Does this sound right?
Also, the Airport product page mentions that it can also run/provide the following: PPPoE, VPN Passthrough (IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP), DNS Proxy, SNMP, IPv6. Sorry if it sounds ignorant, but do I need to bother with any of this? Specifically PPPoE, which sounds like a modem function.
Again, since we're talking about a crappy modem here, the idea is to let the Airport do most of the work, and leave the least up to it.
    Thanks in advance.

I found the answer in an Amazon review:
    1. Auto-Configure the modem with your ISP by directly connecting the modem to your computer. Follow the instructions given in the booklet/user manual/ISP letter to enter the PPPoE username & password.
    2. After configuration is complete, confirm that you are connected to the internet.
    3. Click 'Advanced Setup' on the Main Menu.
    4. Turn off DHCP Server on the 'DHCP Settings' page. Click Apply.
    5. Go to 'WAN IP Address' page and click Yes on the warning. Select RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging. Click Apply.
    6. The Internet light on the modem will turn off and always remain off in bridged mode.
    7. Remove cable from computer and plug into WAN port of your Router.
    8. In your router settings enter the PPPoE username & password. Follow instructions in your router's user manual to enable DHCP on your router.
You should now be connected to the Internet using your modem & router in bridged mode.

  • Should I disable the wireless capabilities of my Bigpond modem/router when Airport Extreme is connected?

Should I disable the wireless capabilities of my Bigpond modem/router when Airport Extreme is connected? I'm told that it's better to only use the WiFi capabilities of the Extreme and leave the Bigpond to feed to the extreme.

No, bridge mode would not be the correct setting for this.
Instead, look for a "wireless settings" tab or page that will provide the option to turn off or disable the wireless radio of the BigPond router.
If you are still having difficulty, it would be a good idea to post your question on a BigPond support forum or contact your Internet Service Provider.

  • DSL Modem / Router for Airport Extreme / Express

Please can anyone advise re the best DSL Modem / Router to use with an Airport Extreme and Express.
I am in the UK with BT Broadband. I currently have a Netgear DG834G which has been great but seems to need a lot of re-setting recently and has been dropping the connection. I've checked our line with the provider and that seems to be OK. The Netgear DG834G is currently wired via CAT5 to my Airport Extreme which is then also wired to an Airport Express to extend the network.
We are in a rural area so don't have particularly fast Broadband speeds (max tends to be around 4MBps).
As I'm using the Airport Express / Airport Extreme for my WiFi I don't necessarily need a modem / router with wireless or anything that has bells and whistles or can make me a decaf macchiato...I just want something this is bomb-proof and super reliable.
I've looked at various forums and am just getting confusing stuff re what works and what doesn't.
We are due to get fibre-broadband in our area next year - very happy to have to get a new router then for that if needed. The important thing for me is to have a decent set-up for now.
    Many thanks! Eddy
Using Macbook Pro and iMac on 10.9.5

You don't need a modem/router since the AirPort Extreme is a router.
I don't know what the best modem might be....that would involve testing hundreds of products, and even if we could come up with a "best" modem for the AirPorts, it would likely not be the "best" working the BT connection, or BT would not support the product......,but you might want to take a look at the Draytek Vigor 120 modem, and then check with both the Draytek support folks and the BT support folks to make sure that the modem will be compatible with your service.

If you are due to get a fibre connection in the future, then you will have to start over again modem wise at that time.

  • Comcast modem/router and airport

Comcast upgraded their modem. It includes a wireless router. After a couple of hour hours trying I got it set up so that both their router and my Airport Extreme can be chosen and used. (I have no idea how I got it to work). It seems that the Comcast signal is stronger (Facebook pages, for instance, load faster than on Airport). But am I sacrificing security by using the Comcast set up? Also, I have a second Airport set up for increased signal elsewhere in my house - is this affected in any way? Is there a reason that the Comcast router would be faster? Thanks.

amber light on the Airport keeps blinking.
    On your MacBook Air.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the amber dot and another window will open to explain why the light is blinking, along with suggested actions to remedy the issue.
If everything appears to be normal, it might be a message that an update is available for the Time Capsule.

  • AT&T Modem Router + Apple Airport Extreme = ?

Nobody from AT&T can seem to answer this so I turn to you knowledgeable folks! In short, my Uverse internet and cable service is set to be installed on Saturday 6/22. The question that nobody from AT&T can't seem to answer is how I would set up my network with their hardware. I do a lot of intra-network activity including managing my Airport Extreme (router) via iOS devices, etc. I would like my Airport Extreme to be the ONLY router in the network which calls AT&T's in to question. I also have my own modem that I'd like to use which is apparently on the compatibility list. So I guess my question is: Do I have to use AT&T's modem and/or router? If so, is it a single unit (router and modem in one)? If so, can I disable the router aspect of it and just use the modem side of it, allowing the Airport Extreme to do the DHCP routing?

Well the first thing is if your getting TV and internet you will have to use the residential gateway (RG) the tech will provide.  Second you can use the Airport as a router to hand out DHCP.  There are a couple of gotcha's though.  If your DVR will be connected via Cat 5e (the preferred way) it must be connected to the RG.  Also any set top boxes (STB), if connected via Cat 5e must be off the RG.  You can not plug a DVR or STB into a secondary router.  The TV packets will flood the router and basically kill your internet.  If you are doing wireless STB's no need to worry. Here is how to do it from a forum member Somejoe7777:There is no true bridge mode on the 2Wire routers.  However, you can still configure it such that almost all functions of your own router will work properly.1. Set your router's WAN interface to get an IP address via DHCP.  This is required at first so that the 2Wire recognizes your router.2. Plug your router's WAN interface to one of the 2Wire's LAN interfaces.3. Restart your router, let it get an IP address via DHCP.4. Log into the 2Wire router's interface.  Go to Settings -> Firewall -> Applications, Pinholes, and DMZ5. Select your router under section (1).6. Click the DMZPlus button under section (2).7. Click the Save button.8. Restart your router, when it gets an address via DHCP again, it will be the public outside IP address.  At this point, you can leave your router in DHCP mode (make sure the firewall on your router allows the DHCP renewal packets, which will occur every 10 minutes), or you can change your router's IP address assignment on the WAN interface to static, and use the same settings it received via DHCP.9. On the 2Wire router, go to Settings -> Firewall -> Advanced Configuration10. Uncheck the following: Stealth Mode, Block Ping, Strict UDP Session Control.11. Check everything under Outbound Protocol Control except NetBIOS.12. Uncheck NetBIOS under Inbound Protocol Control.13. Uncheck all the Attack Detection checkboxes (7 of them).14. Click Save.Your router should now be able to route as if the 2Wire was a straight bridge, for the most part.Inbound port 22 might be blocked, and inbound ports 8000-8015 might also be blocked, and there's nothing that can be done about it.This is how I have my 2Wire configured, and I have a Cisco 2811 behind it doing IPSec, IPv6 tunnels, etc.Hope this helps.  If not post back and we will see what else we can come up with.

hi guy, i have a problem.
i must buy a modem adsl2+ that work with this protocol (request by my provider):
    PPPoA (with username and password)

  • EMac and Airport Extreme

I have an eMac running OS X 10.3.9 with no airport card installed and no DVD drive. I connect to the internet with an ethernet cable from my eMac to my Verizon DSL (Westell Wirespeed) modem.
I just purchased a Macbook and an Airport Extreme base station and cannot get it up and running. Does the new Airport Extreme base station require 10.4 and later? Does my eMac need an Airport Card? How can I get this to work? After trying to configure things using the Airport Utilit on the eMac, I had no internet connection on the eMac or the Macbook. After failing with a Linksys router at first yesterday, I am almost ready to send everything back!
Thank you for any help anyone can offer!

If you are new to networks, it might not be too easy for you, but let's make a start.
You can't set up your extreme from the emac unless it is running X.4.8 AND is connected to the extreme via ethernet. If your macbook has X.4.8 and a wifi card you can use that, or you can also do it by ethernet from your macbook, there might be advantages by doing this.
Once you have installed the software on your macbook, open airport utility and you should see the extreme. Once you have done this you might be able to set things up yourself, if not come back, BUT:
You can't set things up from your emac, once they are set up you cannot use your emac wirelesly because it has no wifi card. You can of course connect it to a LAN port on the extreme by ethernet and join the network which will let you use the internet and share files with other macs (your macbook) on the network.

  • Verizon Turbo Dsl plan with Westell 6100 modem? Help?

So I have a westell 6100 modem and on the 7th I upgraded my bundle i had 1 Mbps for Internet , verizon homephone freedom essentials, and Directv. Since fios is not available were I live. And my new bundle is Verizon Dsl 7.0-1 Mbps turbo plan, verizon essentials and directv for $115.00. My question is will my modem provison the speed correct? will it still work? Or do I have to buy a new modem? Thanks!.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you have been using the 6100 previously then the modem should sync to the new speed automatically.  If yareou still using an old style flat phone cable from the jack to the modem it may not be capable of the faster speed.  The round tan colored cable which originally was supplied with the modem would be the one to use.  I moved up recently from 3 to the turbo 7.1 via ASDL2plus and found that Verizon at my location has capped the speed at about 5.5.  Their out is to say speeds up to 7.1.

  • Linksys router no longer works with Westell 6100 modem

    Hi all,
I came back after a 3 month work absence (and many days power outages, according to the neighbors), to find that my system can no longer connect to the internet using the Verizon Westell 6100 modem to a Linksys wrt54G router to 2 PCs!
I reset the Westell modem and directly connected the PC to it and THAT works okay, but put the router back in the mix (so I can connect my other PC) and nothing works!
I have read on this forum about 'Bridgeing" the Westell modem but nothing about setting up the router.
Can someone PLEASE give me explicit instructions on how to:
1.)  set up the Westell modem in this "Bridge" mode,
2.)  Set up the Linksys router to work with the modem again??
3.)  Tell me why the old setup no longer works, did verizon change something for this modem?
Thank you VERY much for your help in this matter!
    SUE  ;>)

the router has two connections.  one is called a WAN and that is a wide area network, and it means the internet in your case.  and one is called a LAN, local area network.
what you saw means - that the way you connect to your internet is through PPPoE, a username and a password.
and then way your LAN connects is DHCP,  how all of your local computers connect.  This is important, because after you bridge the westell, you will be setting your Linksys up for PPPoE connection, and NOT DHCP.      if you don't do this step, then you will never connect.
that is fine, and normal.  if you follow the instructions at the link provided - you will be able to connect real easily.
you will want to bridge the westell just follow the instructions for "If your Westell uses the red and black Verizon firmware:"

  • Verizon DSL and Airport Extreme

I'm going to add aniBook (oe whatever Apple will call it by then) this spring, as I want to enjoy the wi fi fun like evryone else. My ISP is Verizon DSL, and I was wondering if anyone else here in the discussion board is currently using an Ibook with Verzion DSL and Airport Extreme. I think Verizon has a modem that supports both wired and wireless networking--which is what I'll need since I won't be retiring my iMac G5 anytime soon. So any adive or info would be appreciated.

I currently have the ActionTech Modem (supplied by Verizon) as my wireless router, but would like to replace that with my Airport Extreme. Can this be done?
You will need both. Since both supply NAT, DHCP services and WiFi Access Point, you will have to turn off all three of those in one of them. This is usually called putting the device in "bridge" mode. My recommendation is to turn off those features on the Actiontech modem/router/access point, turning it into a plain DSL modem, and let the AEBSn do all the 3 features (NAT, DHCP, AP).

  • Power backup for dsl modem and Airport Extreme

Does anyone here have backup power for a dsl modem and Airport Extreme that is successful? I have a name brand power backup and when the power goes off both the dsl modem and Airport Extreme remain on; however, the network connection is lost so the fact that they remain on doesn't help. I have been unable to find anything about this problem on the internet generally and consultation with a well-known squad person has not helped. Any thoughts about this will be welcome.

Yes, I agree. But since the backup power keeps the modem powered, why doesn't the dsl connection continue? The squad person I talked with told me that the speed with which the backup power units replace power during an outage is about the same across different backup brands/units (I don't recall the speed but it was in milliseconds) and should be quick enough to retain the dsl connection. Doesn't happen.

Switched from DSL to cable modem. My Airport light won't turn green. Keeps blinking orange. No wireless now and can't connect to more than one computer! ?????

    Hmmmm.
If you reset the AirPort Extreme by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds and then releasing, the AirPort should be back in default settings which would allow mutliple computers to connect to the LAN ports on the AirPort.
Power off the cable modem for now and leave it off at least 15 minutes.
With the AirPort Extreme still powered on, hold in the rest button on the back for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking abmer light.
Then, power off the AirPort Extreme.
Check to make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
After the modem has been powered off for at least 15 minutes, power it up and let it run for 5 minutes by itself.
Now, power up the AirPort Exteme and let it run for 2-3 minutes
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Express
Click on the AirPort Exteme, then click Continue to follow the guided setup tp configure the AirPort Extreme.  You can use the same wireless network name, password, etc that you used before, or set up a new name and password, etc.
