Verizon FIOS suddenly very slow as of last week

Has anyone else in Manhattan (I'm in the EVil/Gramercy area) noiced a severe increase in latencies (on wired connections) as of the past week or so?  UL/DL speeds can be normal per speed tests, but performance on heavy apps very slow, I'm told by my OT dept due 150ms+ latencies, even to nearby servers, e.g. yahoo.com?
I can barely get any work done. Verizon techs clueless. I'm buying a better router but not sure it will help.
Considering switching to TWC but have heard awful things about them too.
Any ideas? Tx.

Hold off on buying that new router. It's probably not the culprit. I've noticed this as well (Midtown west), espcially while gaming, since the latency is much more apparent. Some sites are still good, but others have much higher latencies than normal. I've ran tracert's  on random sites, and it appears that there is a delay when the packet reaches "NYC1.Alter.net". I'm pretty sure this is a point beyond Verizon's reach, but they're the ones most likely to be able to fix this. The problem is trying to reach the right people. I spent a while with tech support yesterday, but they don't even know the difference between speed and latency, and even told me to contact the problematic websites to resolve the problem.... *sigh*... They said they would forward my issue along to a networking team. Other than that I think we can only hope they are aware of the issue and can work to get it resolved.

  • My mini has gotten very slow in the last week or so.

My mini has gotten really slow at everything in the last week. Most of what I do is done on the internet and I use Foxfire 4. Can anyone tell me how to run a system check that might help find the problem? Does anyone know of a problem with Foxfire 4 that might be causing this since I just down loaded it about a week ago.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
On Foxfire, try using Safari or Opera and see if you have the same issue. You can also check the Foxfire site under support to see if any OS X issues have been reported.
How much unused disk space do you have? General rule is keep 10%+ unused for systems usage. Less than that can really slow the system down.
Some have found periodically using OnyX can help with performance. Download from http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php and run the tasks on the cleaning and maintenance tabs. Before using any disk maintenance software you should have important data backed up.
If you want, you can run the Apple hardware test to ensure you don't have a hardware problem. It's on one of the gray OS X disks that came with your system. Look for the 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Insert and reboot holding the D key down, or hold the alt/option key and choose the Apple hardware test when prompted. Choose the extended test.

  • WebDav suddenly very slow

Today, WebDav became suddenly very slow on my iMac running the latest version of Mavericks. Yesterday everything was OK.
When I try WebDav from my iPad things are OK, so I suspect something is wrong on my iMac. I already tried rebooting and resetting PRAM and VRAM.
Does anyone have a good suggestion?

    Hello,
Check to see how much free disk space there is. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Check the hard disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.

  • Mac Book Pro suddenly very slow

MacBook Pro suddenly very slow despite good wifi connection. Should I be scanning for virus? and if so, which product?

Scanning for a virus will be a waste of time.  To date there are no know virus' affecting Macs.

    Any ideas?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Suddenly very slow export

Hi.  Basically, my export has gone very slow.  I will give what details I can, but the main thing here is that I am doing what I have always done, but suddenly it is going very slow.  I export to MPEG2 DVD as that goes straight onto a DVD without further render in my Sony DVD maker program.  Export in Premiere usually takes between 30 and 40 minutes. Latyest project is warning me of over 3 hours!  I thought I would ask here before waiting and seeing if it still works okay in case there is an obvious answer.  MPEG audio, multiplexer on, maximum mrender depth, CBR slider set to make a file that will be as large to preserve quality and still fit on a DVD (I go for around 4GB or just over)  Stick to CBR as the estimated file size is more accurate than messing about with VBR sliders.  Projects are standard definition, two video sources mixed (full DV) and separate sound source added and synchronised.  I film stage plays with two cameras.  Projects typically between one and a half and two and a half hours long.  This project is actually at the lower end.  No other obvious problems with the PC in general.  Is it worth a system restore?  It was fine for a project similar size rendered last week.  I am asking befoire i try system restore as they are getting hard to do.  They never seem to work unless I remove all my virus protection stuff!  CAn I think of anything different about this project?  Well, only that the venue I was filming in was not quite level, resulting in a bit of an angle that I corrected by tilting the film just a few degrees.  (Only affecting the part of the picture that would be off the TV screen) just to make the stage look level.  I often do this with a few shots from one of the cameras, but maybe not the whole film for both cameras like in this case.  I even tried pressing enter and doing that render thingy before export.  That did not help.  Maybe that is just to get something better in the preview window.  Normally it just takes around half an hour or just over.  Media player can be a bit crackly and choppy playing the rendered movie, but then it is always fine on the DVD so I just put that down to windows media playing being a bit rubbish and not important in my case.  Sorry if I have neglected to tell you anything important.  I usually get told off for this on this forum, but I have tried to give you details about the settings I am using.  The main thing is that I am only doing what I usually do.  If I was exporting to a different format I might expect a different time.  I can tell you that I got bored waiting and cancelled a few times before coming on here.  A couple of times the screen went very white and said windows would close the problemn and notify me of any solution.  Program closed but no useful information (I would not really have expected Windows to give me any!).  Maybe someone here can?   I suppose I had better wait for the three hours or more and at least see what comes out, but cant help being scared it will freeze at 37.34 percent and I will give up after waiting three weeks!  But any suggestions would be helpful.  Sorry not very tech-savvy so please keep it to plain English.  Thanks in advance

Without knowing your computer specs, hard to comment on how long an export ought to take. However, you said yourself that you may have applied rotation to much of the video, and perhaps that is slowing things down from normal.
Please check that your hard drives are defragged and are not getting more than 70-80% full as performance can quickly degrade. I would turn OFF the "Max Bit Depth" and "Max Render Quality" if being used. Should not be needed for DV clips going to DVD. As for pre-rendering the timeline, not recommended. This just adds another layer of compression (quality loss) to the final render, IF you check "Use Previews" in the Export area. If not using Previews, then it is all getting re-rendered anyways, so just a waste of time and drive space really, unless playback is so terrible that you want to render a section to check the results before exporting.
I notice you have MultiPlexing ON for the export - is that how the Sony DVD software wants it? Most authoring programs (like Encore) perform better with separate elements of audio and video, meaning the .wav and .m2v files. Reason being that the DVD program will usually be creating Dolby (AC3) audio for the final DVD, so if you feed it the raw elements, it can convert the .wav to .ac3 quickly, and will NOT need to transcode the video. If you Mux (combine) the audio and video, the audio has then been compressed to lossy MPEG audio, then the DVD software needs to separate the audio and video and re-encode them again in most cases. Not the best workflow. Unless your final DVD uses MPEG audio, but I'm not sure that is a legal part of the spec worldwide, is normally PCM or AC3 for player compatibility.
Not a big fan of anti-virus programs, have found many of the popular ones to really take over and bog down the system. Personally, I use and recommend the free solution of Microsoft Security Essentials. My computer, and those of my kids, have been virus-free the last couple of years since going to that solution, and I see no decrrease in performance and it runs in the background totally transparent to me.

  • My Mac Pro Internet is suddenly very SLOW

    Hello,
Recently my Mac Pro suddenly started having problems with the internet. It takes about 30 seconds , sometimes more to load a page. It used to be instant. I am running Verizon Fios for internet with an attached Airport. It does not matter if I am connected or wireless. if I change the connection from one to the other it loads pages instantly for about 5 - 6 clicks and then goes back to being slow. I read some instructions that worked for others regarding similar issues. They said to go to system preferences and select Network and then to select something related to DNS from the left pane. When I go to system preferences there is no left pane or anything that says DNS. Any help would be appreciated. I an running 10.4.11...

  • My Apple TV is suddenly very slow

I am going to have to use laymen terms here. I purchased my Apple TV a year ago and have been using it successful since. About two weeks ago it suddenly began streaming very slowly and has maintained a very slow rate of transfer between my computer (Windows XP) and the Apple TV. To be frank I cannot use it without frustration. I tried upgrading to 2.0 but it did not help. So I did a factory reset which only put it back on 1.1 ; but the performance is still painful. I have made no changes to my router (ADSL) or my computer that is running iTunes. I have three other laptops that are running on the wireless laptop and they are running fast and fine.
    Can anyone help?

    davidwh1,
I may have misread your original post... but I interpreted your message to say that you have your information on a laptop, and that the laptop and AppleTV are both connected wirelessly to your router. And if that is the case you can connect your laptop directly to your AppleTV for testing purposes. However, if your iTunes is on your desktop PC, perhaps you could try to sync one of your laptops (if you have iTunes on it) to your AppleTV in order to rule out that it is a connection issue. Sorry if I misread your post and I wish you good luck.

  • MacBook Pro Suddenly Very Slow

    Hello all,
I own a mid-2012 MacBook Pro with 8gb of RAM and 2.5GHz i5 processor running the latest version of Mavericks. I purchased it back in December 2012, and have only had one issue with it (graphics card failure, which was fixed by Apple).
Everything else has been fine, as far as I can tell; apps load fairly quickly (such as Adobe AI and PS) and there hasn't been any lagging or glitchy-ness unless I'm gaming.
However, recently (about 6 days ago) my computer started to become EXTREMELY slow. Booting up takes probably double the time it used to take, and opening Adobe Illustrator has taken 2-3 minutes. Once I get Illustrator open, something as simple as a brush stroke will freeze up the machine for about 30 seconds. All other apps act similarly. When I'm playing music with Spotify it will lag and stop playing for a little while and then resume. The computer will even freeze when I do something VERY simple such as hovering over the dock to magnify the icons. Even as I'm typing this message, the computer freezes up every few words and makes me sit and wait 15 seconds before continuing to type.
The issue began the day I installed AutoCAD. Is that the issue, or a coincidence? I tried uninstalling it but the Mac was still very slow and glitchy. I tried uninstalling lots of apps I don't use (and don't know how I got them) like Growl and FUSE. I also cleaned up the HDD and have 118gb out of 500 free, and I ran the Apple Hardware Test (the basic and extended tests) with no problems found. Nothing I've done so far will speed the Mac back up to normal.
I do have a Time Machine backup, so one possibility is to restore the Mac to the backup from a week ago (before the issue began). The only problem with that is I'm afraid I'll lose some of my apps (mainly Adobe CS6) which I no longer have the serial number for, and there's no way I'm risking having to buy it again.
Another option is to move all important files to an external drive, wipe the whole thing clean, and start over. Again, I'd rather not do that for fear of losing my applications.
I checked the Activity Monitor and everything seems normal there:
Lastly: Upon looking through other forum posts like mine, I saw that most people want to see the EtreCheck report to try and help; so here it is:

Thanks to everyone in advance!! I'm a student and couldn't live without my computer. Please help

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • JDeveloper IDE suddenly very slow for past two days

    Hi All,
I have Jdeveloper 11.1.1.4 for more than a month now. Suddenly the JDeveloper IDE has become very slow. It is very annoying having to wait for the code changes to show across and windows take long to get in sync. I have 3.25 GB RAM running on XP service pack 3. Also, I scanned my machine for likely virus, but has come clean. It is only with Jdeveloper I am having problems. All other applications are running fine. I even tried just running JDeveloper alone. No luck.
    Thanks

Suddenly the JDeveloper IDE has become very slowSeems like something changed.
Did you install any new extensions? When is it "slow?" Is it when doing a specific activity, or just overall "slow?" What does your OS show (is JDev using lots of CPU, for example)? Have you tried making a backup of your "system11.1.1.4.37.59.23" folder (numbers may be different depending on version) and then deleting it so that JDev recreates it for you (you'll lose all of your preferences/settings)?

  • PP suddenly very slow loading files, generating peak files

Project from yesterday suddenly extremely slow loading, syncing files and generating audio peak files. Using PP 2014.2 on HP Z800. SSD system drive, internal raid and three USB 3 drives connected to USB3 pci-e card. Suspect drive could be hanging up but not sure how to test since all was fine last night. Files are HD 23.98 quicktime prores

I also notice my CC connection needed to be reset several times. The Control Panel internet settings keep switching back on LAN from Automatically detect settings to Use a proxy server. My computer is dual 5650 processors, 24 g ram, so don't see that as problem, especially since this worked yesterday.
    Could really use help ASAP
    Thanks

  • MacBook suddenly very slow to start and operate

Sudenly last week my MacBook becomes very SLOW to start and to operate. Until last week it was working fine.
I do not believe to have perform anything abnormal and what is new is just the normal updating of the Softwares that is performed automaticlly every week.
I tried to shut down and restart several time.
I tried several time to reinstall Mac OS 10.6.8
I checked the hard disk with Disk utility and it results OK.
    What to do ?
    Thanks
    Marc

Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • Mini Suddenly Very Slow

I've begun experience a frustrating problem with my Mini. Last week some applications began to run very slowly - Mail, in particular, would hang for 30 seconds or so after I hit "Reply". Photoshop would slow the system down significantly when used. Yesterday, it crashed on me three times in a row, so I decided to trash the prefs and restart.
That's when the Finder stopped loading. It would load the desktop background, but no dock, menu or icons would appear. I did some research on another system and found that perhaps reinstalling the OS would help.
So, I did the archive/reinstall option which took over five hours to complete. This morning I came back to my system and it looked fine, but everything I did would cause the "spinning ball" to appear and the system would hang, sometimes for up to five minutes. Even typing a search query into Google would cause hangs after typing one letter. Opening the HD caused a hang as well. I could no longer start Firefox (it would begin opening, and then just stop as though I had never tried starting it in the first place).
I'm trying to track down if this is a hardware or a software issue. I don't want to go and wipe my system clean for a complete reinstall if I don't have to. Does anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Rob W.

    Standard things to do:
    1) Make sure you have enough free space on your hard drive: click one time on Macintosh HD icon, then File > GetInfo
(If you had room to do the Archive/Install -- then that probably isn't the problem, though.)
    2) Start up in Safe mode by holding down the shift key during startup. This will keep startup items from loading and disable the network. Does your speed problem go away?
    3) While in Safe Mode, run DiskUtility and verify your hard drive and repair permissions.
    4) If your Mini is too slow to run DiskUtility in Safe Mode, then boot from your original install CD/DVD by holding down the C key as soon as you hear the startup chime. After selecting your language, run DiskUtility from Utilities menu at the top of the screen. BTW, if the Mini is responsive when booted from the install CD, that suggests the problem is with the configuration of your system on the hard drive.
BTW2 -- what external devices are connected to your Mini?
