Verizon GT704-WG-B modem. Sudden, frequent disconnects.

Hi, I've been searching on Google and reading forums everywhere for a solution yet I can't seem to find one anywhere. The closest to my issue was this post http://forums.verizon.com/t5/High-Speed-Internet-DSL-and-Dial/Connection-keeps-dropping/td-p/283839, only at the end they OP doesn't really explain how they fixed their problem, only that it stopped.
The only difference is my internet pauses, the internet light goes off on the modem, begins resetting itself, working again a few moments later, but only for about 5-15 minutes before repeating that process again. This happens randomly and normally happens all at once for a long time before I give up and go to sleep then try the next day.
I've tried many steps I've read over time from power cycling, using a preferred DNS server, ipconfig/release(and renew [which I read my specific model seems to block me from resetting my IP?]), checking the phone line, and checking the filters.
In a last ditch effort I tried calling the house on my cell, and after reaching voicemail it seems that the internet would pop off briefly. I thought maybe the problem was the phones, so I unplugged them all and that seemed to work for a few hours. Then tonight (Starting at 9:30PM PST I believe) it began all over again with it resetting itself over and over until I gave up on what I had planned to do.
I'm hoping someone here can help with my issue.
One last bit of information; This issue only began happening AFTER recieving a recent upgrade to my speed (From 7MB to 15MB I believe), before then I had almost zero issues with connection and none that a simple reboot of my old modem didn't fix, and I've been with Verizon since I think their DSL first came out.

  • Frequent Disconnections

    Hi
Lately for the past couple weeks, my modem is frequently disconnecting and reconnecting and it is driving me nuts. The time it will stay online is random, ranging from a few minutes to a few hours. The re-connecting only takes about 20-30 seconds. It is not a phone service problem because I still have a dial tone even when I got disconnected (though I do hear some noise). Verizon techs has come to my house more than 3 times, each time claiming that the problem will never happen again. The problem would seem fixed for a day or two, but then the disconnections would happen again.
    Please help!
    I have a Westell 6100 modem connected to a Linksys WRT54G v5 router.

So I found out my modem was not in bridge mode. Thanks for the link. Once I changed my modem to bridge mode, my Linksys router settings started screwing up, but that issue has been resolved once I called Linksys.
Can you explain to me, in detail, how changing my modem to bridge mode solved this problem?
I'll wait a couple more days to see if I lost any connection before checking that this problem has been resolved.
    Thanks!
I am not sure but - if that resolves the issue, my guess are  because the modem is
    #1 buggy
#2 OR - the modem does not have a stable firmware on it. Maybe an update would fix it?

  • Frequent disconnection from services

Hi, for years I've been a satisfied customer, but recently my internet, (along with my television signal and phone) would stop working.
Strangely enough it happens at exactly XX:05 and XX:33, about every thirty minutes.
I'm not completely sure what is going on, but the WAN Coax signal on my MI424-WR will turn off, television will black out, and my phone will ring but with no one on the other end.
They will eventually restore to normal, but this is quite annoying. Can anyone help me out?

Sorry to hear about the frequent disconnects. Sounds like an issue with your ONT with all the services effected like that. I have sent you a private message to get more information.

  • WRT400N - frequent disconnects on Windows 7 Enterprise

I work from home for a software company, so I'm constantly online transferring data and talking to customers via Skype & a Cisco IP Phone. I've got my work laptop PC (running Win7 Enterprise) connected to the WRT400N using a LAN cable (wireless is for a MacBook Pro my wife uses).  The WRT400N is updated to the latest firmware.
The problem I'm having is that I'm getting disconnected throughout the day, and nothing short of power cycling the wireless router is fixing the problem.  I've tried disabling and re-enabling the LAN adapter, ipconfig /release and /renew, and rebooting the laptop.  It seems that each time, I am forced to power cycle the router to restore connectivity.
I used to use the wireless adapter on the laptop, but due to frequent disconnects I moved the router to sit directly next to my laptop and just hooked up the LAN cable.  I discovered that my Comcast modem was actually dropping connectivity so I had them swap it out for an updated model and since then I can see that it's staying connected (and yes, I'll admit I'm doing the n00b test of watching the LEDs to see if they're blinking off whenever I lose connectivity now).  As I type this I have actually switched back to using the wireless adapter which hasn't disconnected in the past 6 hours (a record).
Long-winded so I apologize.  I really would like to resolve this issue somehow but I'm not a network expert by any means and I've exhausted my limited ability to troubleshoot.

Try  to follow the below mentioned settings and then check.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter. Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case.
    Click on the Wireless tab
Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed.
Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network.
Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA2, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA2 Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be equal to or more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings.

  • Ichat, AIM, Adium frequently disconnect using Airport

Ichat, AIM, & Adium all frequently disconnect when using Airport. I use a Linksys Wireless Router with an Airport extreme card. When directly connected to the router, I have no problem. Using a PC with Windows XP, AIM operates fine. Safari and Firefox work fine, although sometimes I receive errors connecting to pages, when I try again no problem. Using any of the chat programs, I lose connection, but then can reconnect. After a few times, the AOL servers will prevent login.
I use COMCAST Cable internet service. My wireless router uses WEP encryption. I would switch to an AIrport Base station, but doubt it would correct the problem.
I have had this problem previously, but it corrected itself. now it is making chat programs unusable.
    Any ideas?

    Hi John,
By default Linksys units normally have the IP address of 192.168.1.1
Is this true for both your units or have you changed one of them ?
You may only find this out if you connect directly to the Modem one.
Also you have not said if only one of them is doing DHCP.
Example pic 3 on this page. This shows this device as getting it own contact IP address by DHCP (like from your ISP). Further down the page in the pic it shows the device is also acting as a DHCP server to the local net.
If your router is set up like this it could be getting an IP address usng DHCP like this device shows and that would tend to mean that the Modem is acting as a DHCP server as well.
If both devices still have the default IP addresses you will have conflicts, which probably explians the problems you have.

  • HH5 / Infinity 2 - Frequent disconnects

    Hi,
I had infinity installed back in October, and things were ticking over quite happily at first. In the last 6-8 weeks, I have been getting fairly frequent disconnects, averaging 2-3 a day, but peaking at 6-10 in a single day at its worst. From within the house, the HH looks to go offline for about 15 secs, then come back up and my connection to the internet is restored. As I work from home, this can often be more than a trivial annoyance, especially if I am working on a remote system or talking to a customer.
I cannot see any obvious cause from here. There is no apparent noise on the line, no odd devices plugged in or anything else which I think would explain this. I have included some information below which might be of use to people more knowledgeable than me. If more information is needed, just say.
    Any thoughts gratly appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Rich

    From http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/:
The following is from a ping polling tool running from a machine connected directly to the HH. It is set to ping google DNS 8.8.8.8 on a 1s frequency (sorry Google, but figured you could handle the extra load). The red block shows packet loss, lasting for 15s. At the same time, the HH also became unpingable, also reporting 100% packet loss. This is exactly the same behaviour I see each time.

Looks like the dlm as  intervened and the speeds capped around that 54meg level.
Personnally  I'd raise a fault & see if the line checks come back with anything that might need an openreach visit.

Also check if there is anything up locally with openreach's new checker tool.

If the test come back with no fault found, then possibly  research using a openreach modem with the hh5 or get a 3rd party non-bt all-in-one. These are the two main fixes people use on here.
You've probably noticed a few of simular threads about HH5 disconnects.  For what ever reason the hh5 can be great on some  lines but very very mischievous on others (including mine).
The Openreach modems do seem to calm things down and with being bt based everying just works including the tv box thingy with troublesome mulicasting suff.

I had Infinity 1 installed two weeks ago but the performance has been pretty bad.
    I have the following problems:
    1. I get disconnected at least twice a day and usually once every 2 hours or so.
    2. My upload SNR margin seems to be stuck at 18+.
    3. Even download SNR margin seems to vary a lot from about 5.8 to 8+.
    4. About 25% of the time I sync at under 15mbit, which is meant to be the minimum for Infinity 1.
My current stats are below (they're about the best I've had):
    5. VDSL uptime: 0 days, 10:18:11
    6. Data rate: 797 / 15871

I had BT Infinity installed at the start of April and it has always disconnected multiple times per day.
Phone support said that "2-3 disconnects a day is normal" which I certainly hope is not true. Regardless, they said they'd monitor our line. Which is all they've been doing for 3 weeks.
Our disconnects are almost certainly related to wind and rain. It will disconnect within minutes of rain starting which suggests an above ground fault.
Some days are sunny with zero disconnects, but most have 2-15 disconnects a day.
Last Saturday a 2 hour long downpour resulted in disconnects every 3-4 minutes making Infinity unusable. Support said they'd continue to monitor our line...

Download results from the BT speed tester are under the 15mbit minumum. The upload is below even the low impacted estimate.
    Download Speed (Mbps): 12.63
    Upload Speed (Mpbs): 0.67
    Ping Latency(ms): 39.63
What does it take for somebody to actually inspect the line instead of remote monitoring from India?

  • WRT54G V7 Frequent Disconnections

I've read alot about frequent disconnections using wireless routers but i've tried all sorts of different settings and find it disappointing that the wireless router (WRT54G V7) won't 'keep alive' the connection when it should.
I'm on a WinXP Pro SP2 workstation (AMD + Epox if it matters) on a built-in LAN adapter using Linksys WRT54G V7. Using my DSL directly, Windows automatically redials if I don't have a connection and will keep trying for as many times I have in configured.
When I started using Linksys Wireless router, Windows no longer prompts for login to the DSL (PPPoE) whenever I lose the connection. I don't know why. I Linksys configured to 'keep alive' for 30 secs and I've tried the following with no improvments to my situation:
    - enabling/disabling the DHCP Server
    - manually entering DNS 1, DNS 2
    - MTU is auto
    - Tried configuring both Mixed/G-only
    - all other options are default to enable my laptop on wireless
Does anyone know what I can do to force Linksys to check if there is a live connection, and redial if there isn't? What's annoying is that I have to restart my workstation to get the connection back. I've tried manually disconnecting through the Linksys admin console but when IE starts returning the message 'page cannot be found' then everything is disconnected.
I've only had the router for less than a month (got it as a present for myself) and I got was disconnections. Again, if I plug the DSL directly, whenever I don't have a connection for some reason, it will automatically redial and I'm connected again. Linksys WRT54G V7 doesn't do that.
    Help!

    Hi...
Try reseting and reconfiguring the router. Also set it up as keep alive specify the redial period. Change the MTU setting of the router to manual and specify the value as 1300. Also the PPPoE connection on the computer should be disabled when router is dialing.

Jeffrey, Welcome to the discussion area!
I believe that there are 2 issues here. One is how the iMac handles incoming calls. The other is that your telephone service has to send a signal when there is an incoming call.
In traditional phone service, if you are using the phone and someone tries to call you, their call is blocked at the switch (at the telephone company) and they hear a busy signal.
To do what you want, you must ensure that your phone company has the proper configuration to send your iMac the signal that there is another phone call.

  • Frequent disconnect using peap wpa2 with aes and tkip

I got frequent disconnect for the users on wireless using peap wpa2 with aes and tkip.
My network is setup with :
    -Wireless controller 4404
    -ACS 4.0
    -28 access point 1131g
-Peap authentication with active directory windows 2003
-windows xp - mschap2 with aes- tkip
when i check only aes on the wireless controller 4404 the network user are able work in a stable condition

This might similar to the bug where Wireless phones dont associate if WPA2 is configured with both AES/TKIP. In this case try to upgrade the controller.

  • Modem failure to disconnect

I am operating in a dial up mode and connecting to AOL.
About every 6th time I sign off, the iMac modem will not disconnect. Clicking on the Disconnect legend does nothing.
Disconnecting the phone line does nothing.
The "disconnecting" scroll across the top right of the screen continues and will not allow me to sign on again.
The only solution I have found is to restart the computer, When I do that, every thing is back to normal.
The problem, when it occurs, will last for hours if I miss the problem and leave the computer on.

    I should also add...
BEFORE attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
    You will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.

  • PLEASE HELP! Hooking up WRT54G2 to a Verizon GT704-WG

I have searched here and google, no luck. Here is what I am trying to do. I have Verizon DSL in a two story house, Verizon only issues and uses one modem/router (Actiontec GT704-WG). I have no houses near me within 1500 feet. It is a wireless router also, just like the Linksys. My main PC is upstairs and runs Vista. My second PC is downstairs, runs XP and has a Linksys WMP110 in it. Wireless signal of no type can go through the ceiling on the first floor, not even cordless phone. Must be insulation of some sort. So, I installed an ethernet port upstairs and ran CAT-5 down the wall and installed the second port. However, my second PC is three rooms away and running CAT-5 to it is impossible. So I bought a Linksys WRT54G2 in hopes to send out the signal for the first floor. I have the main PC upstairs hooked up to the Verizon modem/router at Port#4 and internet functions perfectly. I disabled any security to remove a variable so I can get this going. I hooked up a Ethernet cable to Port#3 and ran it to the wall jack port I installed. I hooked my downstairs PC temporarily at the downstairs wall jack port and hard lined the connection to see if it is good through the wall. Perfect, everything is a go. I took the WRT54G2, upgraded the firmware on it and also disabled security. Hooked up the wall jack to Port#4 on the WRT54G2 in hopes of sending out the signal to my secondary pc to its WMP110. That is how I want my system to work.
I read you need to turn off DHCP on the WRT54G2 and select Router in the setup menu. Did that and saved. I also read change the IP of it to 192.168.2.1, did that and saved. No connection. I hook up the WRT54G2 to my PC to configure it and I cant access the setup menu. Wont let me and I have no other network adapter hooked to my PC. I turn off, hold reset button, and now it will give me the setup screen at 192.168.1.1 . So, doing this numerous times I see that it doesnt like me to change the IP of it. Call verizon, they have me basically hook it up the way I described above and setup the WRT54G2 to clone the Actiontec router, that doesnt work either. Linksys techline has me try to do some PPPoE deal and that is a no go either. I know this has to work, I have seen it done before.
I have any info someone needs to help me setup both of these routers, so I can have the downstairs just repeat the signal. Or whatever suggestion you think is better. I am just frustrated after 5 days of trying myself, verizon tech and linksys tech. All other posts from people never say if they solved it and if they did they dont say how.

Check the IP from the first router and change it accordingly on the WRT54G2
For example:- IP of the first router is 192.168.1.1 then change IP on wrt54g2 192.168.1.2 and disable the DHCP. You may get error for page cannot be displayed or the page might hung up. Just unplug the power from the router and plug it back after a few seconds. Now connect the cable to any LAN port and not internet. You should be able to go online.
Let me know if you need any further assistance.
