Verizon iPad 3 has no LTE coverage unless under contract?

I just spent a frustrating 30 minutes with 2 Verizon wireless reps over the issue of LTE coverage for my iPad 3 at my house.
Basically, I was told that I don't have LTE coverage because iPads are "prepaid" and not under contract. Therefore I can't use the 4D LTE button on their website to determine LTE signal strength or coverage on their  map and instead I need to click on The Prepaid button which does not show LTE coverage. The Apple Store website links to the Verizon Map with the LTE button pre-selected and it was the info I used to make the choice away from AT&T.
Has anyone else experienced this situation? I spoke to 2 reps including a supervisor named Tim from the Colorado Center who refused to give his last name.
What do I do now?   Is Apple aware of this?   Has anyone else experienced this???

Thanks Meg for you interest in my plight.  I will attempt to clarify further.
At my location of interest, I get only 2 bars and 95% of the time my Verizon iPad 3 only gets slow 3G service. Every once in a while, at random and for short periods, LTE service latches on but doesn't last long. Allowing Data Roaming makes no difference.
In order to determine what was wrong I first called Verizon to make sure it was not a temporary problem with one of their towers. If they had told me their equipment was in top shape and confirmed that my signal was supposed to be strong in my area (as per their coverage map) then my next stop would have been the Apple Store down the street.
I am familiar with the map at:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/wireless-coverage-area-map.shtml
That is the map linked-to by the Apple Store and the one I used to make sure Verizon offered strong LTE coverage in my area.  I live in the middle of a major metro area (33143, Miami-Dade, Florida) and selecting the "4D LTE button" button on the Verizon wireless coverage area map indicates complete, darkest color, top tier, strong coverage for my area and miles around.  Based on this information I decided to purchase my iPad 3 with the Verizon circuitry.
The surprise started when the Verizon rep stated that their internal system showed no LTE coverage in my area for Prepaid plans AT ALL.  As proof they indicated that as a Prepaid customer I could NOT click on the 4D LTE button on the Verizon wireless coverage area map because that button only applied to contract customers.  I had to click on the Prepaid button and that was the end of that.  This was confirmed by the supervisor called Tim from the Colorado Branch office. No further recourse.
So I am upset and a bit confused at the moment. At the time of purchase Apple sends me to a Verizon map with the 4D LTE button pre-selected ... but that's not the button you are supposed to use according to Verizon. I am in the middle of a prime city with top Verizon LTE coverage (alledgedly) but can't access it unless I get a 2-year contract.  Can this be considered bait and switch?  Any class-action lawyers out there?
I just want my LTE.
Caveat Emptor?

IPad mini has frozen with ICloudBackup window showing and msg "This iPad hasn't been backed up in two weeks. Backup happen when this iPad is plugged in, locked,, and connected to WiFi.
I have synced it with iTunes while computer is connected to internet. What more do I need to do.I can't get rid of this window by hitting OK
Ther display shows the correct time, but I cannot "slide to unlock".

Try this now. Reboot your iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Jetpack and iPad connected and 3 bars of 4G LTE coverage yet can't open web page or get email - no network?

I've checked and both the iPad and the Jetpack say they are connected to each other.  I'm showing at least 3 bars of 4G LTE coverage, but can't get email to load - "pop.verizon.net" server not responding - and web pages never load.  What's wrong?  I also can't look at Data on the Jetpack it refreshing fails.

You may be connected to the Jetpacks WiFi network but it doesn't sound like the Jetpack itself is allowing you out onto the VZW network/internet. Id start with a simple SIM card reset and see if you can clear up the authentication issues.
    SIM card reset:
    1. Power down the Jetpack
    2. Remove the back cover
    3. Remove the battery
    4. Remove the SIM card
    5. Let the device sit disassembled for 60 seconds
    6. Reassemble and try again

I bought and iPad 3 in Australia and after returning to England the 4g LTE coverage doesn't work

It may or may not be possible to verify the usage of such a technology device. And where did you get the idea that it costs $10 to manufacture and sell an iPad? I think the parts cost alone was $260, not counting manufacturing, shipping, storage, retail space, salespersons, helpdesk support, all the other overhead costs, etc. etc.
With so many people out there trying to scam the system, it will be an uphill battle to try to convince anyone that you bought it and didn't open the box for 14 months.  That's very unusual.
At some point, the store you bought something from (in this case it was Apple) has to say no.  What if it had been unopened for 2 years, or five years, or 20 years? This is what the warranty period is all about. It starts on the day you buy it and ends at the end of the warranty period, regardless of usage.
I am sympathetic to your plight but if you are able to get a new iPad (refurbished would be more likely), it will be through the kindness of Apple going above and beyond.  If you do not get one, it is not Apple's fault you waited this long and there is no requirement for them to replace it.

  • The time zone is incorrect on my Verizon iPad 3 when lte is enabled.

My time zone is incorrect when the LTE network is enabled on my Verizon iPad 3.  When I disable LTE the time zone shows correct.  The incorrect time zone when LTE is enabled always shows Cupertino.

I keep my auto-update for time zone turned off.  You might try turning it off, changing to the appropriate time zone, and then turning it back on.  Maybe it's an Apple joke of everything being on Apple time.

  • [USA][iPad 3][Bands] Verizon iPad working on ATT 3g?

    Hello there, apple peoples.
(Before we start) Please try to not use so much of apple lingo on this thread.  I have always been very anti-apple, i believe when i buy a device i shoulden't have mommy telling me what i can and cant do without it.  I owed the original iPod touch, hated it, and haven't touched apple since.  Now with how advanced/well known jailbreaking is, im willing to give them a second chance.
(The question).  Will the verizon iPad work in ATT 3g?  The verizon iPad states it will work on the following bands:
    LTE (700 MHz1); CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz); UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Im seeing all the verizon goodies in there, plus GSM 850/1900 (ATT's 3g bands).  So apparently it has the hardware to use ATT, but will the software restrict it?  I know i own a droid 3 (Verizon phone, with GSM bands) and the GSM bands are locked in the USA unless you re-flash the radio.  This is done to keep the phone on the verizon network in the USA (from what i have heard, the iPhone does this too), but then again, that is a locked device since i pay less then retail for it.  Being as i pay full retail for the iPad, i see no reason for it to be carrier locked.  I am also seeing 700 LTE in there, but i don't really care about that.
TL/DR:  Will the verizon ipad work on ATT?  (This thread is probably heavily fragmented.  I had about 6 tabs open, music, plus TV while typing this)

I called Apples sales line today asking this same question. After 10 minutes on hold I was told that a Verizon iPad 3 "The New iPad" would not work on AT&Ts 3G or HSPDA+ network. They didn't seem to even have much information about the iPad 3 as it was anyways so I guess we won't actually know till someone tries.

  • Difference between AT&T and Verizon iPad 4G

Is there anything fundamentally different in terms of hardware between the AT&T and Verizon iPad? I'm aware that once you choose one you're unable to use the other, but is that a software configuration or a hardware restriction?
The iPhone differed in that the AT&T was a GSM model while the Verizon was a CDMA model. The CDMA model cannot be used internationally. (Is this conceptually similar to the iPad differences?) Since I'm not a US citizen and want to be able to use the new iPad in my own country's 4G network, I would like to know whether I'm confined to the  option of buying an AT&T iPad to ensure that the 4G LTE connectivity works at home too.
Apple seems to make it clear that each iPad is capable of connecting to any network up to 4G LTE... but is more ambiguous about the differences between the AT&T and Verizon versions. I would like to seek some clarification before commiting to buying an iPad that wouldnt work on international 4G networks!

This is the first iPad to offer both CDMA and GSM on Verizon.  The following is based on my experience with Verizon's global Blackberries (CDMA/GSM) and my AT&T iPad (GSM).
If you travel internationally infrequently and for short periods of time (i.e., the annual two week vacation), you  probably won't bother to go through the hassle of buying and swapping out the SIM for a country specific card.  For short term use, the simple solution is either of the international roaming plans offered by AT&T and Verizon.  The AT&T international rates are a little lower than Verizon's but I'd recommend Verizon if you have better coverage domestically with Verizon.
If you travel frequently and are likely to  swap out the SIM, AT&T is your better bet. The extra LTE band is a plus.  More importantly, their customer service folks have much more experience handling questions about GSM and international roaming.  Verizon's business is mostly domestic and CDMA. They've offered a handful of phones with dual CDMA/GSM, but this new iPad will be their first major foray into GSM and international roaming.
As for CDMA coverage, that's useless in most of the world - except China.  But, with CDMA, you're stuck with the Verizon international roaming rates unless you want to go through the hassle of opening a data account directly with China Mobile.  China Mobile is Verizon's roaming partner in China, so either way, you're stuck with their funky version of 3G unless you switch to GSM and get a China Unicom sim (and you're back to AT& T because they have the experience with GSM).

  • Cell service working on open box Verizon iPad without setting it up

Bought an open box Verizon iPad 3.  Went through set up but not enter an Id or credit card for cell service.  But cell service is working, and I can't log into the account with any of my ids.  Any thoughts on what's going on?

    Hello,
I should be more specific.  The iPad does register Cellular Service with multiple dots on the upper left of my main screen.  However, there seems to be an internal "disconnect" because apps like Maps and Safari don't recognize or know there is an active cellular connection.
When I go to Settings > Cellular Data and slide the "switch" to "ON" the Enable LTE "switch" becomes available and it "switch" it to "ON" also the Data Roaming "switch" becomes available and I slide it to "ON".   Lower on the Cellular Data page are 6 apps in "Use Cellular Data For:"  All but FaceTime are "switched" "ON".
Under Safari in the "Use Cellular ...:" is "System Services.  Pressing System Services brings up 15 "Services" beginning with "iTunes Accounts" and ending with "Software Updates".  All 15 have some amount of usage shown.
Back on the Cellular Data page there is a listing for "SIM PIN".  When I touch the right pointing carat two lines appear.  The lower one labeled "Change PIN" is greyed out.  The upper one labeled SIM PIN has a slide "switch".  When I slide the SIM PIN "switch" to the right to turn it "on" a numeric keypad momentarily appears then, a moment later, the screen changes to the main page.  Double clicking the Home button reveals Settings remains open.
I have removed the SIM Card several times and cleaned the contacts with a "Q Tip" and Isopropyl alcohol, rubbed the contacts with a Pentel Hi-Polymer eraser and again with Q Tip and Isopropyl alcohol.  I have also inserted and ejected the SIM CARD drawer several times attempting to remove any corrosion from the internal contacts.  Again, some portion of the iPad knows there is an active Cellular signal but apps fail to register the connection.
    Any further thoughts?
    Thanks

  • Verizon iPad 2 Does not work in Alaska

Well, yesterday I found out my Verizon iPad 2 will not connect with Verizon’s system in the State of Alaska (I work here but live in Oregon). No where in Verizon's or Apples web sites could I find a disclaimer that an entire State would be off limits.
It's not that there's not a signal to be had, Verizon iPhones work fine. It's that if you are a non contract customer ie: month to month, there policy will not allow you to connect.
Apple said they will refund my money and Verizon already has (Yes they allowed me to set up an account through the iPad while in Alaska & then denied me access.
I have not been able to contact AT&T to see if they have the same restrictions on service.
They (Apple/Verizon) should have a disclaimer about excluding a whole state from service before purchase...
& yes I consulted their coverage maps before buying... Every indication is there is coverage.

Verizon uses roaming through Alaska Communications System (ACS), which is probably why the month to month Verizon contract isn't compatible. Yes, Verizon should have a disclaimer, Apple on the other hand has no control over the cell phone carriers rules.
Although if Apple will refund you your iPad purchase that's good.
I don't believe AT&T has the same restrictions, they have their own towers and do not roam off an Alaskan phone company.
Verizon is coming to Interior Alaska by 2013 though, they are getting permits for putting up towers.

Hello Community Members! Great to see that your interest in 4G service has brought you here to inquire about when coverage will be extended to your area, paulb20186! Pollix11 has already given you a great answer. I only want to add that you can check for coverage in your area (or any other area for that matter) using the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Coverage tool. Thanks again for your interest!

  • Why am I getting 3G to 1X service when I live smack in the middle of solid, 4G LTE coverage?

We just bought a home in Glendale, AZ. According to Verizon's Coverage Map, we live smack in the middle od supposed, solid, 4G LTE coverage. Yet, I'm constantly bouncing between 3G and 1x coverage with 1 to 2 bars at best. Sometimes it jumps to 4G LTE, but it never stays more than a minute or so.
Can someone please explain this to me? Preferable someone from Verizon? I shouldn't have to be using an extender here. It's ridiculous.

    Anthony,
My wife and I both have the Samsung Galaxy S5. I live in the 85303 zip code. My major cross streets are W. Missouri Ave. & N. 83rd St. It doesn't matter inside of outside, we both still get the same 1x to 3G, occasionally 4GLTE service. As a matter of fact, I just had the Cox Cable guy here, who also has the same phone with Verizon service, and he was commenting he only had 1x.
So do you think you could get a tech to check and see if maybe a tower is experiencing an issue? It's going to be very disappointing to have to use an extender here since Verizon has tauted how strong the 4GLTE signal is here in the Phoenix area.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Verizon iPad 2 won't "wake up" without hard reset!

I am having a problem where my Verizon iPad 2 will go into a state where it won't "wake up" unless you do a hard reset. It won't respond to the power or home button. I notice that this happens after the iPad 2 has been unused for a few hours. The 4.3.2 update did not resolve this problem.
If you do a hard reset (hold home and power for several seconds), it will start back up again, but it will say that a "restore is needed" and asks to connect to iTunes. If you ignore this and turn the device off and on again, the device will finally start as normal.
I have recreated this numerous times. Once again, the 4.3.2 update did not resolve this.
Anyone else experience this and ideas on how to fix it? I can't say for certain when this started happening, but I don't think it started until 4.2.1. I don't know if that caused it though.

My wifi iPad 2 is behaving similarly, and the same general problem is reported at:
        http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-help/13892-ipad-does-not-wake-sleep-mode.html
The conclusion on that forum was to contact Apple / the store of purchase etc. The outcome reported was the replacement of the device.
I have tried: multiple resets, powering off and on, removing all but the original apps, and "Reset all settings", but I still can't wake it from sleep without resetting it.  The behaviour is the same whether in the field or powered in the dock.  My next step was to "Erase all content and settings" - however I'm glad I checked some forums first, I'll call Apple on Monday.

  • Using SUMIFS on iPad Numbers has anyone had trouble using the keypad relational symbols in the "conditions" field?

The iPad Numbers has a very nice data entry keyboard for expressing conditions.  They have the usual =, <, > but also have the single symbol version of >=, <= and <> (as an equals with a slash through it), however, if you try to use these keypad keys in the conditions field of the SUMIFS, it returns a syntax error.  After seeing some examples of Numbers '09 I discovered I had to express a relation inside double quotes, " ", which means the text keyboard is displayed and the very nice data entry keyboard is gone along with the nice symbols.  Has anyone seen this and am I doing something wrong or is this another bug?  Thanks.

The xxxIF functions have (for as long as I have used them) required a text string as the argument unless it was equal to a value of a cell, with no logical operators. so it is not something new, its been that way for decades and I personally think Apple might have done it differently if they didnt have to maintain compatiability with older spreadsheet programs.
i.e. not a bug, ensures backward compatability.
