Verizon is on DNS Blacklist

Ok, I am a Verizon customer and I am livid with the way Verizon Customer support treats me (us customers).
I own my server (Windows Server 2003). I have over 100 clients and starting last month no one on my server could receive emails from anyone sending an email using a Verizon account.  For example. My mother, brother, neighbors and others would send their email using a Verizon email account and send to my personal email account on my server. They’d receive a notice back undeliverable and the reason listed: IP Blacklisted. Then if a person that has Verizon internet and uses their email on my server would send from their Outlook, it would show sent, but where it went no one knew. I’d send an email, watch the mail exchange on my server and it would never show going through.
So, after seeing the return notice about the blacklisted IP address. I did some checking and first I thought my server IP was on the DNS Black list.
Well it’s not my IP blacklisted.
Turned out the DNS Blacklists I have on my server have a ton of Verizon IP blacklisted. So, when someone would send an email using Verizon Internet, the email would be checked against the DNS blacklist on my server, read as spam and kick it back to the person undeliverable with the blacklist notice. Then, I found out if a person that has Verizon internet (like myself)would send an email using their email account on my server, the email would show sent (in their Outlooks) but never go through my server. Again, the DNS blacklist would block the Verizon IP address associated with email and not let it through.
Here is the message they all got back. (My email address and server IP was removed for protection).
Recipient address: [email protected]
Reason: Remote SMTP server has rejected address
Diagnostic code: The IP Address of the sender (206.46.173.7) was
found in a DNS blacklist database and was therefore refused.
Remote system: dns;xxxxxxx.com (TCP|206.46.173.7|9314|XX.XXX.XXX.XX|25)
(mail.xxxx.com ESMTP, Version: 1.986-- ready at 12/10/09 19:05:52)
Now run the IP 206.46.173.7 from the message above (which is a Verizon IP address see below) against a DNS blacklist lookup. This is just one of the Verizon IP addresses I ran.

spam.dnsbl.sorbs.net - Sorbs is one of the best to use too!
smtp.dnsbl.sorbs.net
spam.abuse.ch
Now the reason I am here on this forum and the reason I wrote all that. I had to turn off the spam checkers and all my clients, including myself and getting creamed with junk mail/spam. It was never, and I mean ever this bad. I used to get maybe one a week.
I have a fair amount of clients that have Verizon as their Internet provider. And, as long as I have the spam checkers enabled they (and I) are screwed. Turn them off (like now) and we are all screwed with unwanted email.
Does anyone know any DNS Black Lists I can add to my server that won’t interfere with Verizon and all their IP Blacklisted?
Oh, before I forget. Why I am livid with Customer Support. These people are complete @#^$%’s. For example: I announced I am a customer and that I am the ADMINISTRATOR. I had these supposed “Techs” tell me 4 times….”Sir, you need to contact your server Administrator!” I spent hours and hours over almost a week trying to get help. NOTHING! Oh, then try to explain that the company you work for has a crap load of IP addresses blocked and they have no idea what you are talking about. I even emailed them the blacklist/abuse department a copy similar to what I wrote above. Never heard a word back.

Hello Scottye...sorry for the tough time, unfortunately this isn't a Verizon issue being as though the blacklisting isn't in house. We aren't blacklisting your IPs...This companies blacklisted  your ips. We suggest you contact Sorbs, Backscatter and Lashback directly. You may find this website helpful for SORBS http://www.au.sorbs.net/cgi-bin/support and another SpamHaus http://www.spamhaus.org/lookup.lasso maybe helpful as well.

  • RV082 - Slow DNS Resolution

    Greetings Gang,
Have an RV082 v1.1 FW 1.3.98-tm that has been rock solid for a couple of years and is now, suddenly, experiencing dead crawl DNS resolution.
No changes in configuration prior to the behavior starting. Tried rebooting the unit, no changein behavior.
There's an internal DNS server that resolves internal resources, but everything else gets pushed to the RV082.
I've tried Comcast, Verizon and Google DNS servers at the router level, and the results are the same -- so that rules out the DNS servers themselves.
Change the DNS servers at the NIC level on a wrokstation, and resolution occurs quickly and reliably.
I'm looking to reset to Factory Default and reload the configuration and likely upgrade to FW 2.0.0.19-tm or 2.0.2.01-tm but I do see similar issues reported with those firmwares, and moreover, in a mixed Mac/PC environment.
Was wondering if anyone else has experienced these issues, could identify a root cause and resolution.
    Thanks,
    Jorge

Probably just corruption, which can happen every so often.  A couple of years in service rock-solid is really great.
I experienced similar problems with my rv016s when my ISP changed their backend carrier equipment.  I was never able to fix the issue, so I had to reboot them every 8hrs.
I wouldn't upgrade unless you HAVE to.  You'll more than likely run into other bugs that breaks your current configuration, even if it's just a site-to-site VPN (I've been there, done that).

  • Is a Dynamic DNS Service included in my FiOS Bundle?

I have the FiOS TV, Phone & Internet Bundle (internet upgraded for $5 extra for faster speeds) and switched from Cable.
I know that Cable provided all of their Boost internet premium speed customers with a bundle of goodies, including a Dynamic DNS service.
Does Verizon offer Dynamic DNS service included as well?
If not, which is easiest to use (I have a Mac running OS X 10.5.7)
I noticed that my FiOS Router Firmware has Dynamic DNS section, but it's very unclear as to if it is meant for a Verizon specific service or a third party service.
    Please advise; thanks!

That screen you captured is where you would enter your dyndns.org account info and thereby get dynamic dns running on your setup.
It's not really accurate to say the service is 'included' in the bundle, it's just that the router is capable of talking with this 3rd party service - most routers can do so nowadays.

  • Strange DNS Problems - Chesterfield VA, 23832

Starting yesterday, I am unable to resolve portal3.carmax.com, portal2.carmax.com, & portal1.carmax.com via DNS server 71.252.0.12.  This is the DNS server assigned to my FIOS router.  Other people in the local area are experiencing the same problem.  I have confirmed that all appropriate A records are available via the SOA record provider.  No other ISP's are experiencing this problem.  Yesterday, via NSLOOKUP, 71.252.0.12 resolved to nsrest01.verizon.net now it resolves to FWDR-12.FWDR-0.FWDR-252.FWDR-71.  This leads me to believe a problem was detected and a DNS forwarder was put in place.  However, the problem still persists.  What's strange is other A records within the zone DO work.  Can anyone shed so light on the problem?  It's very isolated and very unique.

I've walked the delegation and everything seems in order ... the NS record delegations don't point to the actual names of the servers and the zone itself doesn't "appear" to include the two primary name servers listed as delegations, but they are there under different names.  All zones are authoritative on the servers which are listed, so I don't think it's anything on the DNS side itself -- although the TTL is fairly low -- so if perhaps the DNS resolver 71.252.0.12 had any short term connectivity issues, it possible the zone aged out of the cache and got negatively cached as "does not exist" by the Verizon server for whatever period their default setting is.
I just did directed queries at the server from my connection -- South Central, PA -- and the A records all resolve as expected.   As your still having the issue?  I don't know how Verizon has their DNS setup, but with large numbers of people using seemingly the same DNS server address, they could an AnyCasting multiple servers on the same address -- and maybe one of them has a corrupted cache (which would be why it works for some people, but not others).
    Is it still persisting?

  • DNS errors + Intermittent Connectivity Help

For the last 5 days my internet has had intermittent connectivity. It is throughout my entire home network of internet access. We have not had any storms or changes to our settings or connections for it to be anything on our network. This issue also happened in the past. Then after X amount of days, it was magically be fixed. When the internet does work, there are no issues and it works fine, which again makes me think it is not on our end and it is Verizon's fault.
When I check the system log of my modem, it has a TON of "DNS request timeouts" or errors saying some other stuff about DNS issues.
My modem/router is Actiontec GT704-WG, I also don't use Wireless internet which is usually related to intermittent connections but that shouldn't be the case.
So is this an issue with Verizon's lines/ servers / connections? Or is it actually something wrong with my network?

It is probably a network issue, but the first step is usually to rule out the local equipment, so restarting the PC and the modem/router is a good starting point.
I have yet to come to encounter an ISP that competently manages their DNS equipment, and you will find a number of Verizon Techs who post here who will tell you to change from the Verizon automatically assigned DNS's to Open DNS.
visit www.opendns.com for detail instructions on how to do so. I changed to open DNS months ago.
So if you still have a problem after you have rebooted the equipment, and changed to OpenDNS, it is almost certainly a Verizon network issue, although convincing Verizon of that can be quite challenging.
    Good luck

  • DNS Settings for Westell 9100EM Router

I have continuously been experiencing issues with Verizon's preset DNS setting when using DHCP, and therefore plan to use a different set of DNS servers (I hear that 4.2.2.1 - 4.2.2.5 are recommended in the DC area where I live).
I wonder, however, where to change the DNS setting in the router.  The 9100EM has primary and secondary DNS settings both for the LAN (i.e. the internal network) (under My Network - Network Connections - Network (Home/Office)) and for the external WAN network (under My Network - Network Connections - Broadband Connection (Ethernet)).
Are the settings for both networks supposed to be identical, or can I use different settings for the LAN and for the WAN.
Any recommendations which DNS servers I should choose for either network connection?
    Thanks a lot

I tried to set the LAN DNS at 192.168.1.1 but receive an error message ("DNS Server cannot have the IP address of Wireless Broadband Router Network").  The same happens when I set the DNS to the external IP address of the router.
If you are trying to do that in the router's UI, no kidding.
If you are trying to do that on a computer behind the router, perhaps the router does not act as a DNS Server relay.

  • Can I enter Google DNS in MI424WR Gen 2 router/modem?

    I have a Actiontec MI424WR Gen 2 router/modem.
I want to use Google DNS. I had read that even if I enter the Google DNS that Verizon will overwrite them and use their own DNS. Is that true?
An option would be to diable the Verizon DNS and enter Google DNS in each computer/component. Would that be better?

No you can use whatever DNS you want.
Entering DNS settings in the Verizon MI424WR router to opt out of DNS AssistanceNote: The Verizon MI424WR router screens may vary slightly from those shown below, depending on when you purchased your Verizon router and the version of firmware loaded on it.
Open a Web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 in the Address bar at the top of the screen.
Enter your router user name and password into the login screen.
Select your time zone in the Time Zone field.
    Click OK.
    Click My Network.
    Click Network Connections.
Click the Edit icon for the Broadband Connection type that has "Connected" in the "Status" column. Don't confuse the Broadband Connection with the Network (Home/Office). In the example below, "Connected" is displayed in the Status column for the "Broadband Connection (Ethernet)," so the Edit icon would be clicked in the Action column of that row.
When the Broadband Connection Properties screen displays, look about halfway down the screen for the DNS Servers information. Write down the DNS server addresses, and then clickSettings at the bottom of the screen.
Find the DNS Server area about halfway down the screen.
Change the last octet of the Primary and Secondary DNS Server addresses to 14. For Example:
You look up the DNS information and the server numbers are:
    123.123.123.12 Primary DNS
    123.123.123.12 Secondary DNS
You would change the addresses to the following when statically assigning them to the computer or modem/router.
    123.123.123.14 Primary DNS
    123.123.123.14 Secondary DNS
Note that the .14 is the special set of servers that will opt you out of the DNS Assistance program.
    Click Apply.
Click Apply to confirm that you won't be able to connect to Verizon while the DNS server information is saved.
Review the updated Network (Home/Office) DNS settings to confirm your new DNS settings have been saved.
    Click Apply.
Close the Verizon MI424WR router setup window.
    Restart your computer.
After your computer restarts, open a web browser and enter http://www.verizon.com/ to test your new DNS settings. The Verizon home page should display.

  • Earthlink Servers -- "can't connect to server"

Recently (the last couple of weeks) Safari have been displaying the message "can't connect to server" when trying to access certain pages.
    Here are the particulars:
This only happens with Safari, not with any other browser (netscape, firefox, explorer) on my Mac or my PC.
The problem is intermittent -- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Both times when I've called apple tech support (and they tried to reproduce the problem, it was working)
The problem only exists with Earthlink's homepages ...any page that has the url "home.earthlink.net/~whatever. So this rules out any particular page or site ...the problems (for me) seems confined to Earthlink homepage servers.
This happens whether logged on via dial-up, or using DSL ethernet (these two are via my isp, earthlink) ...or when using my neighbor's wireless connection via Comcast. So the problem is not unique to the ISP.
Here's the puzzling part. When the problem does exist, I can access the page by typing www. in from of the home.earthlink.... and the page loads. When the problem does not exits and the www. is placed in front of the url, Safari displays the "can't connect to server" message (???).
Also, during these intermittent periods when it doesn't work, any other pages I have that call upon graphics with a SRC url of home.earthlink.... the graphics don't display.
Lastly, my tracking program has shown (1) a significant drop in the pages accessed with Safari, (2) the pages that are accessed with Safari are occasionally accessed with the www.home.earthlink.... url, so this is obviously happening to other safari users.
For my part, I've done all the usual stuff, checked here for similar reports, reset Safari and trashed all the prefs. No changes.
Apple tech seems to think this is an Earthlink Server problem. Earthlink tech acknowledges no such problem and feels it's Safari's problem. ...and I'm caught in the middle Hrmpf!!!
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
    I'm using OS 10.3.9 with Safari 1.3.2
"home.earthlink.net/~skinesscentuals" -- one of the affected sites
    iBook G4 1.33 w/Mac OS X (10.3.9) w/768 MB
    Dell Pent III w/WinXP (SP2) w384 MB

Let's try it the other way around. Open Network Preferences and open the lock.
Set up a new location, I call it "verizon" because the DNS nums will be theirs, available to all. Enter as 2 separate lines
    4.2.2.2
    4.2.2.1
Proxies have been a problem so make sure you have none unless you really need them.
    Apply now. Good luck.
Do a forum search on "open dns" for 2 more servers to get their nums. I can't see them as that is what I am currently running and don't want to mess with it.

  • Problem with some mailboxes

    Hello.
    Version:
iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 2.10 (built Dec 26 2005)

    SunOS unimail 5.9 Generic_122300-02 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-80
Today we have a rare situation:
I can send messages to almost all local mailboxes, but some mailboxes I cant.
If I run in the server the command "imsimta test -rewrite" for a "problem mailbox", everything is ok, but If I try to send a message usign a POP client I obtain an error (connection with smtp server fails). If I send messages to another mailboxes from my POP client everything is ok.
In the server I did a telnet to port 25, and I can send a message to the "problem account". When I try in my machine (the same with the client POP), telnet is ok, helo is ok, mail from: is ok, but rcpt to: I put the address and the server takes like 5 minutes to say +250 2.1.5 aa@domain OK+ and I can send the message.
I tested in another machines with POP clients and the situation is the same.
I stopped the server, delete the /store/mboxlist/*.log, started again, reconstruct the account with the problem, reconstruct -r for all, and nothing.
In the mail.log I cant find anything.
We have a firewall in the middle, but I can send to some boxes normally, I dont believe this is the problem.
    What can I do?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor English. If you need more info please tell me.

  • RV220W - in routing mode changes external Ip with router IP

    Good day.
I just installed one RV220W in my network, in routing mode (not NAT) using on WAN port public Ip 193.111.184.xxx and on LAN side on IP from my company public C class (212.100.143.0). It's working, but main ang huge problem is than Router is changing any IP coming from intenet with it's own 212.100.143.xxx IP, which mess up everything (logs, counters, etc).
It was using 1.0.1.0 firmware, I switched to 1.0.0.26 but nothing changed.
Also I have a VPN - gate to gate with another location (RV042), and all computers from other side of tunnel reports same router IP 212.100.143.xxx when accesing servers from my side, which also is bad.
Previously I user an RV082 for this joB and everything was great, except 100 Mb WAN/LAN ports of RV082, which I will use until get Rv220W working right.
    Any idea is apreciated.
    Thank you,
    Catalin Burla

I have changed this weekend from a DSL using a Linksys by Cisco WAG54G2 to a Cisco RV220W Small Business Router and just found out the same problem. This is serious for me, for one, it completely destroys SPAM blocking with DNS blacklists.
This is how it looked when using the linksys:
    Apr  9 03:18:17 vanroodewierda postfix/smtpd[49507]: connect from 189-041-10-204.xd-dynamic.ctbcnetsuper.com.br[189.41.10.204]
    Apr  9 03:18:18 vanroodewierda postfix/smtpd[49507]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from 189-041-10-204.xd-dynamic.ctbcnetsuper.com.br[189.41.10.204]: 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [189.41.10.204] blocked using zen.spamhaus.org; http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=189.41.10.204; from=<[email protected]> to=<[email protected]> proto=ESMTP helo=<189-041-10-204.xd-dynamic.ctbcnetsuper.com.br>
This is how it looks when using the RV220W:
    Apr 10 18:34:29 vanroodewierda postfix/smtpd[31608]: connect from ciscorouter.rna.nl[192.168.2.254]
And thus DNSBL is not possible. My RV220W uses One-to-One NAT to route one of the 5 outside WAN IP addresses I to the mail server on the LAN. Because I do not get the external IP address passed on to the inside, postfix has nothing to go on. I tried instead to use the  normal port forwarding in the IPv4 rules on my main WAN IP address, but that doesn't help.
How and where can I report this and how long will it take Cisco to fix something like this? Because this is very important for me (and my users) and I'll have to return the router and buy another brand if it takes too long.

I believe that sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org is being phased out and replaced with zen.spamhaus.org.
I use the following dns-blacklists (in this order - order does matter):
    zen.spamhaus.org
    bl.spamcop.net
    dnsbl.sorbs.net
    list.dsbl.org
According to my logs, in the last 2.5 days, zen has blocked 3040 (87.88%), bl has blocked 303 (8.75%), dnsbl has blocked 104 (3%), and list has blocked 12 (.34%).

  • Not receiving email alerts from my bank

I have my bank's online alert system set up to send me email when certain actions occur to my account.  These alerts stopped coming to me some time in January.  I thought it was a problem at their end because they had said that they were upgrading their system, but yesterday I added a Gmail address to the alerts and those are now coming through!
I have checked the spam folder on my computer (I usually use Forte Agent to receive mail via POP) and have disabled spam filtering at Verizon's end, but the email from the bank won't come to my @verizon.net addresses.  I would prefer not to use a Gmail address for this, as Google knows too much about me as it is, I don't need them sniffing the alerts I get from my bank!
As far as I know all other email is getting through to my @verizon.net addresses, but I guess I can't be sure of that!

The bank's IP address might be blacklisted on Verizon's network. Does the bank get back any replies saying that the email to you did not go through?
They haven't sent me any messages about their email being bounced, and I haven't called them to ask about it.  I assume that their alert system is automated and have not tried sending any questions to its address.  The bank's web site doesn't list any email contact addresses, just a phone number to call, and I really don't like calling customer service voice numbers and have someone make me go through all of the steps I've already tried!
Is there a page somewhere on the Verizon site listing the blacklisted ip addresses?

  • TS3297 Does anyone know how to fix a problem where iTunes store previews (just music, not movies) stop after anywhere between 9 and 13 seconds of playback?

Basically, when I try to listen to any music previews, it cuts out inexplicably after more or less 10 seconds.  The movie previews work fine.  The iTunes diagnostic showed up clean, and I have already reinstalled iTunes as well as restarted my computer. Any ideas?

The following post from wunbadapple fixed my preview issue. May want to try it.
Re: itunes store song previews now less than 10 seconds
created by wunbadapple in iTunes for Windows - View the full discussion
Well I think I fixed it, but with Apple you can never be sure. Just previewed 5 songs and all previewed ok. I reviewed the thread above and some other related threads and all seemed to reference DNS at some point. So I changed my DNs provider in Windows
    Network connections->properties->IPV4->properties-> Primary DNS = 8.8.8.8 and secondary DNS = 4.2.2.1 .
Primary is the Google DNS server, secondary is the old old old VZ DNS (used to be GTE I think). My default was Verizon's Fios DNS. 8.8.4.4 and 4.2.2.2 are other google and VZ servers if you want the same provider for primary and secondary. I split them in case one has issues.
    Then DOS CMD: ipconfig /flushdns
This seemed to resolve the issue, but can't be sure something in Apple servers, etc didn't change. I am wondering if there is something evil in the iTunes Store VZ FIOS DNS interaction, but can't be sure. At least worth a shot if you still have the issue. Ironic the google DNS servers fixed an issue with Apple.

  • Apple Mail Inbox Lost

At work we just switched from one email ISP to another due to a DNS blacklist for the old one. When we switched to the new email server and the settings were configured for the new mailbox, my boss lost all of his Apple mail that was on the old server. Is there a way to recover this? I was just checking his settings, and he did not have Mail activated in iCloud. I feel like we had this happen once before, but I'll be darned if I can remember how it was resolved.

    You’re welcome.
According to what you said in your first post, this happened as a result of downloading your mail on the iPhone. I have no idea how the iPhone works or what its capabilities are, but are you sure your .Mac account is set up as IMAP there as well and not as POP?
Mail stores most preferences and all the account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (except the passwords, which are stored in the keychain). Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored in ~/Library/Mail/.
Similarly, Address Book (whose data you should back up as well) stores the settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and the data in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/.
These files can be backed up just like any other data files. The affected applications shouldn’t be running while making the backup.
Actually, while you’re at it, you might as well back up your entire home folder...
For IMAP accounts, if Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Keep copies of messages for offline viewing is set to All messages and their attachments, Mail keeps a local copy of those messages on your hard disk that becomes part of any backup that includes the ~/Library/Mail folder.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Mail problem with some IMAP accounts - login fails, Thunderbird OK

After upgrading to Mountain Lion Mac Mail fails to connect to some of my IMAP accounts. I tried everything I can think of. The problem is, the accounts work fine with Thunderbird. However, one of my IMAP accounts works with my main user account's settings (it was imported from my Lion set up), but it fails to set up with a second user. It seems to me that using IMAP with my provider and the Mountain Lion Mail is not working.
Rebooting my saved Lion installation confirmed that it still works...
Installing said accounts with Thunderbird and IMAP also works.
Login with Mac Mail and POP using the accounts also works, webmail works, iOS works, a freshly set up Gmail account with IMAP works ....
ONLY the damned Mountain Lion Mail program doesn't work with my mail provider's IMAP.  WHY? WHAT CAN I DO?
    Any insights or ideas?

I tested in another machines with POP clients and the situation is the same.
I stopped the server, delete the /store/mboxlist/*.log, started again, reconstruct the account with the problem, reconstruct -r for all, and nothing. If you are having problems sending email, then the problem is unlikely to have anything to do with store database. This will be MTA related.
We have a firewall in the middle, but I can send to some boxes normally, I dont believe this is the problem. => I have an innate distrust of firewalls as they have caused so many problems in the past for other customers. Are you able to configure an email client to send directly to messaging server and bypass the firewall -- just to remove this as a potential cause?
