Verizon rant from a Mac user

In response to a "2nd Notice - Action Required" letter from Verizon, I changed my e-mail settings on my MBP, iBook, and iPad. None of these devices would send mail with the new settings. So next I tried to use the Verizon InHome Agent program to see if I could find out what I was doing wrong. The program would not open.
So, I counted to ten, poured a stiff drink, and dialed Verizon. I had a lovely conversation with their live-in robot and finally got through to a young human. He informed me that they'd received "a whole lot of calls" informing them that the new settings don't work with Macs and, oh yeah, neither does the InHome Agent program. I noted that Verizon's letter states the old settings will no longer work in September. "So what's going to happen?" I asked. "Oh, I guess they'll figure it out by then," was his response.
The conversation reminded me of the hours and hours I endured on the phone, working my way up the tech team chain, about fifteen years ago when I was trying to get my new DSL service properly configured. Finally, I found a technician who "spoke Mac" and knew how to do it.
Ten percent of all cell phones in use are iPhones. Isn't it time Verizon took this reality into account ?

I agree Stupid Letter if you have made the mail settings change. If you have made the changes ignore the nag! Otherwise see all the links below regarding the same. Stupid me found I did not shnage the POP settings properly on my iPhone. So the nag may have ben well justified. See my notes and comments below.
This Community is for Verizon Residential Accounts, not Wireless. If you wish to change your iPhone Settings, you may find more information in the Wireless Community. I am on AT&T and have Verizon Email. Yea it is Verizon Email on an AT&T iPhone.
I have modified my Email Settings.

First, Second , third, letter or Email is a reminder, but the way it is worded in the Email, implies that you are warned again that your Email will stop working. Verizon does not want a flood of calls about why peoples Email is not working. Thus the NAG message.
It should mention only if you have not made the changes to your Email Settings! Yea I keep getting the second reminder more than once. So how can it be a second reminder.

  • Mime attachments in Mail from two mac users

I've been receiving mime attachments in Tiger Mail from Ebay and members for a while and I've searched the forum for answers but haven't found a viable solution yet. I end up using TextEdit to open them. I've contacted ebay about this and they have no clue, and think it's spam even though I tell them I get them from Ebay tech support, however they do show up ok in my RCN webmail when I check there.
Anyway that's not the problem now, I was trying to troubleshoot my father's mail problem who is Panther Mail and it mysteriously stopped working for him a couple days ago both sending and receiving. However he is getting them from his webmail at SBC/Yahoo formerly Ameritech. I checked his account settings over the phone and they seemed correct to what he had before but I had him contact his provider.
They don't seem to know what's going on and wanted him to contact Apple.I had him contact them again and they finally did have him change his outgoing mail server from Ameritech to SBC/Yahoo. So he is able to send from there now but not receive emails. ( he still still sends and receives ok at his webmail site) . Since they changed the outgoing mail server however, the email he sends me (all plain text) is coming now as a mime attachment.
I've never seen this before from two Mac users using Mail and plain messages. I had him try changing back to the Ameritech outgoing sever but that still doesn't work. And again if I check my RCN webmail I can view these messages fine in the body of the email there, just not in Mail. Any ideas what may have caused this? Is it because of the Yahoo outgoing mail server? He's about givin up and has resorted to his webmail only for now. I generally like Mail but this is a pia.

    <Where is it designated as a "mime-attachment" & where does the "27bytes" text appear?>
It shows mime-attachment(27bytes) just below the little plain document icon. This shows up both in the body of the email and also the little attachment drop down menu below the To / subject area.
<Also, if you go to Mail's View > Message submenu when one of these messages is open, which (if any) 'alternate' menu choices are available (not grayed out)? >
All are greyed out except Long headers and Raw source.
Here is the header info in the message if that helps any:

how do you open a Numbers file sent from another Mac user with same operating system, i get a pop up that says I'm missing an index.hml file??? HELP PLEASE

The operating system may be the same but the Numbers applications are likely different.  You need to get the apps in sync.  Unfortunately, the Numbers (and Pages as well) saga is pretty confusing (and frustrating).  Here's some info from the iWork resident version expert (PeterBreis0807):
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs.

  • I would like to suggest a Verizon-specific forum for Mac-users

Verizon is the largest provider of wireless and other related solutions. When I have problems with my Mac or supporting services I am consistently able to find solutions on either the Mac or Verizon forums. However, this takes quite a bit of effort to locate the right answer for my problem. And, this takes a lot of time.
I would like to harness solutions for Mac-users who are Verizon customers all in one place. This could make it easier for Mac-users to get quick answers. This could also be a great referral point for Verizon as it sorts out answers/solutions for Mac users.
Currently, Verizon hears from less than .05% of its customers that there are any issues of compatibility, less access to great services, needs for solutions for Mac. However Mac users represent at least 20% of computer users around the US. On the one hand you can infer that there are issues with less than .05% of the Mac universe or, on the other hand, you can infer that many just don't go to Verizon for the solutions.
I am not sure which is right. I just know that having solutions in one place, my Mac home, would be useful. I hope you will consider the idea.
I do realize no forums are dedicated to any one provider. However, Verizon, again, is the biggest provider. Maybe this is worthy of a forum.

    Hi,
I this case I don't see the need to duplicate services that are independent and already out there
http://www.dslreports.com/forums/all for North America as a whole
This British one has ISP related forums as well as OS specific issue ones
    http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/
If I had Internet Connection problems and my ISP seemed unable to help me then I would look to those.
I am sure there are many that are also Language based all over the world or at least country based where a language is spoken in more than one part of the world.
It is about the level of question involved and some may already get answered in the "Getting On Line" and similar forums already here.

  • How do I transfer my itunes library from different mac user accounts?

I was planning to make a new user account (not itunes) for myself on my mac since my other is completely screwed up, but if i do this i will lose my itunes account. How do i transfer my library from the old user account to the new one.

Using administrator status on the computer you should be able to move the whole iTunes folder from one account to the other.  Put it in the equivalent music folder.
You may need to adjust user permissions on the folder and everything in it so it belongs to the new user.  Read the part about changing permissions on the iTunes folder in: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11583914

  • To buy or not to?  Seek advice from longtime mac users...

I am a long time apple/mac user/owner (since 86!) and bought the powerbook pismo in 99, and the titanium 867. It's coming close to time on buying the new macbook pro.
But I have the feeling the mbp is more suited for those wanting to make a switch. I have no need for windows, I prefer just OS X. There is also a bunch of terminology and software incompatibility I have read about. Bundles, parallels, or something. And I would like to continue using a lot of my current applications on the mbp.
Is an upgrade from powerbook to mbp a problem for longtime mac users? Is there a handy site for some of the changes from the older powerbooks to the mbp?
    Thanks!

It all depends on what software you use.
Anything running under OS 9 or Classic is no longer supported. There are ways of running OS 9 on an intel mac using virtualisation, but if you really need a Classic app then you need to look hard at that.
Nearly all applications which run on the previous macs, Power PC or PPC for short run reasonably on intel macs. The OSX on new intel macs includes a program called Rosetta which seamlessly translates the Power PC application for the intel platform. For some applications there is a performance penalty - e.g. Photoshop - occasional users will not mind, graphic professionals will mind. This will be resolved when the next version of Photoshop comes out - a universal version which has the code to run on both intel and PowerPC without needing Rosetta.
Many other programs work well under Rosetta - for example Microsft Office is fine. Some programs run a bit slower than they did on the G5s but faster than on the G4s so many people upgrading from PowerBooks are happy with Rosetta performance. As applications are upgraded to Universal code, there will be less and less use of Rosetta.
Rosettal incidentally is seamless - you don't see it at work - you start the application and Rosetta does it's thing.
As for Parallels and Boot Camp, these are ways of running Windows on the mac. If you want to run Windows within OSX you can use parallels, if you want the option at start up to start up into Windows or OS X you can use boot Camp. If you don't need Windows you can ignore both.
So - if you come back and say what your current apps are, people here can tell you how they can be expected to run. It's not as different as you might think and the chances are everything you have will work fine.
    Best of luck.

  • Question about Xcode from experienced Mac users

    Hi,
I am new to Macs.Recently I found an issues where the finder copy certain files such as .DS_Store whenever I access a network share. I tried to use a command through the terminal but it didn't work. I called apple to ask if there was any way I could view the value of the com.apple.desktopservices preference (sorry if this is not the name) and they told me to install Xcode so I could see it.
I am a network engineer but I could like to know how I could get benefit from Xcode. What does it do? Is there a way to access the same information using terminal?
I would like to learn a bit more about things that can be done using the command interface. I would appreciate if you send me some links or recommend any books (for simple stuff)
Thanks in advance for your opinion.
    Macbook C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello and welcome to Mac.
Your ".DS_Store" issue is not really an issue, OSX creates the file wherever it goes. You can remove existing .DS_Store files on a volume of your choosing with this Applescript:
Click here to launch Script Editor.
display dialog "When you delete .DS_Store files, you will lose window size and icon arrangement for EVERY FOLDER on the target disk. Furthermore, if you had any Spotlight comments (a.k.a.Finder comments) associated with any files, they'll also be deleted"
set mountedDisk to POSIX path of (choose folder)
    tell application "Terminal"
if (count of windows) is 0 then do script ""
    delay 0.1
do script "find " & quoted form of mountedDisk & ¬
" -name .DS_Store -delete" in front window
    end tell
Everyone you talk to at Apple is an idiot, don't waste your time. Preference files are binary files for faster reading and writing by software. Xcode contains an application called "Property List Editor" that translates the plist files from and to editable XML files when you open them. Believe it or not, you can download the application from this page:
    http://Gnarlodious.com/Computer?action=AttachFile
But there are ways to write the preference to the file without editing it. You can persistently disable the creation of the offending files with this Terminal command:
    defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
As for Xcode, it is for programmers. There isn't much value in it for a sysadmin. Terminal, however, should become your main tool. You can convert a binary plist file to XML with this Terminal command:
    plutil -convert xml1 ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktopservices.plist ; cat ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktopservices.plist
That is actually two commands, the first converts the file, the second writes it to the Terminal. After editing it, you would convert the same file to binary with this command:
    plutil -convert binary1 ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktopservices.plist

  • Quick question from future mac user

    Hi there.
Just a quick question about the Intel iMacs.
Total noob with Macs so please forgive me, I'm looking to get away from Windows and PC's but not sure what I would need exactly.
Would the 24":3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 4GBs of RAM and 1TB hdd be more than enough to handle video/audio editing with Final Cut Pro Studio, some gaming (such as newer MMO games or RPG/FPS games) and maybe running VMware Fusion for running Windows apps and games that I have/use that are either not available or not yet supported by Apple?
Or would I be looking at goin with the Mac Pro?
I'd rather shoot for the iMac because I'm SO tired of PC's and boxes and would like my computer to actually look nice as well as kick butt. But I'm just worried that if I got with the iMac I won't be able to perform those functions well or at all.
I love the look and feel of the iMac although I don't think you can get more than 4GBs of RAM or more than ONE hard drive inside (which isn't a big concern as I can always use external drives) so I'm just wondering if upgrading to the extra ram and hdd space from the get go would be a great help without having to worry about adding more later.
I'd like to be able to just use the iMac than the Mac Pro because the price difference seems to jump up quite a bit between iMac and Mac Pro. I'm just worried if that type of iMac setup wouldn't be enough for what I need.
Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Janin

The iMac in general is more than enough to perform those tasks well however the Mac Pro still has it's advantages. Lenn already went over those so take a look at these speed scores as they may help you to make your decision.
    http://www.marketingtactics.com/Speedmark/
Either way I recommend getting the base RAM configuration from Apple and purchase RAM from OWC.

  • Having trouble opening jpgs of a disc from another mac user

    HI everyone,
I am hoping someone can help me.  My friend gave me a series of pictures on a disc and when I try and open them I am getting the message
Item "IMG_1621JPG"  is used by Mac OS X and cannot be opened.   I am running system OS X 10.5.8.  Not sure which version she has.
    Thanks for your help

Do you get the same error with all the files?
Are you double clicking the file to open? If so, try this.
Open whatever app you can use, like Preview, to view jpg files. Then in the Finder, select the jpg to open. Now does it open?

  • Mac user locks files for Windows users on NFS shares

    Hi Everyone,
We run a mostly Windows environment here at my school and have two AD servers which also do our file shares for AD users. Every user has a network drive mapped to L on Windows, and this is mounted on the dock of our Mac users (all Macs are bound to the AD for auth and the OD for management). We also have shared folders for different groups of people, such as admissions or art (where the issue is). Most of these divisions are only Windows, so file sharing isn't and issue - but this is not the case in our Art department.
We have a shared folder (T on Windows) setup for users of the Art department with mostly Office docs in it. Windows users can write to the share just fine, just as the Mac users can. The issue comes up once a Mac user edits and saves the file (all to the share) - Windows users are now locked out of the file because the permissions are reset. What can we do to fix this issue? It's obnoxious having to go and reset the permissions after every edit from a Mac user.
    Thanks,
    -MRCUR

We also have that same problem. We don't actually solved the issue but we what we do did is just unlock the files once and even they are edited or opened in windows or mac, it does not lock the file. We use windows pc and connect to the drives and just simply right clicking the file then properties a button will show in the properties window saying "unlock". After we did that, those files was never locked out again.

I want to setup so the calendar from another mac user shows on my computer ?? Have tried the icloud bit but don't know what I am supposed to do, yes I am a novice ..... I am sure it will be a very simple thing but don't know where to start??

Open the Migration Assistant in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, or connect the computers with a FireWire cable, start up the G5 with the T key held down, and move files over manually. The Migration Assistant will not transfer data to an existing Mac OS X user account.
