Verizon to introduce monthly data caps!

No more unlimited data plans. Read it and weep!
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5giT4zkD63qlcMfrkYw1Zo4v8-vQw?docId=bf5891ac2a30410481d75ff70bdc1980

Although current subscribers keep unlimited, there's nothing stopping Verizon from forcing data caps when those contracts expire.
Also, it seems Verizon calculates data usage by rather creative means.
Verizon's  own My Verizon app says I used 151.58 MB, reported from their servers as of yesterday. The app shows totals a day old. Why is that?
3G Watchdog Pro says I used 47.87 MB as of a few minutes ago, as measured on the device.
Both apps measure from the 27th of the month.
How is it Verizon shows I used 3x the 3G data? Why is it that, from 6/30 - 7/4 when I was home on vacation and used WiFi for all but 12 hours, Verizon showed I had used almost 20 MB of 3G data per day?
If Verizon posts the method and rules by which they calculate data usage, I haven't been able to locate it.
Now that penalties are at stake, they'll have to start explaining themselves.

why is it ok for a verizon wireless service representative to lie to a customer? I went over my monthly data and i called to ask for some help with the overage because i was barely over. They told me they would take care of it and sold me on a shared data plan that would result in 2gb less data but told me i would save 20$ a month. I agreed and recieved my next statement and to my suprise my bill actually went up 15$ a month and i talked to several people and they all told me there is nothing that can be done to get back on the plan i was on and they can not even give me a discount to get me back to what i was paying. They can only offer me a convenience credit. I will be cancelling service.

    ajwest101,
We do not want to see you go. I truly apologize for any misinformation regarding your plan. Let's investigate into this a little further. What plan were you on? What plan were you switched to? If you look at the detailed billing online of your previous bill do you see any additional charges other then the plan?

  • HomeFusion 4G/LTE data caps way too low!!! Please raise them!!

I've had HomeFusion 4G/LTE since January 5th and I absolutely love the speed and low latency over satellite. There's just one big problem that I'm really disturbed about and that's the extremely low data cap it has. I'm paying $135 a month for the 30GB package and I've already hit 25GB in just over 2 weeks. I've watched no movies other than what videos I watch on YouTube. I've downloaded no movies or software in ISO format. I have played WOW a few hours over the past couple of weeks but that uses very little data.
This HomeFusion is being used by a family household and I can tell you that unless I just tell everyone to just not use the internet, there's no way 30GB is going to be enough data. Supposedly for the first 2 months I'm on some kind of promotional period that actually gives me 45GB, but then it's suppose to drop down to the 30GB thereafter.
If VZW doesn't raise the caps to real world usage expectations, then I'm going to be spending $300 a month on this connection just to get the extra 15GB that's being offered during the promotional period. That's $10 per 1GB over your limit, which 15GB is $150, then added to the $135 already which will be $285 plus taxes.. That's outrageous for a fixed 4G/LTE connection to my house.
I'm out in the sticks and probably 1 of only a few that are using the tower for the 4G/LTE it offers. I seriously doubt I'm causing any congestion with how I use my connection.
Hopefully there are other HomeFusion customers that see the need for VZW to amp up the data caps to something more realistic at around 100GB.
Recently an article came out showing that the ISPs were using data caps to solely monetize data usage and it had nothing to do with congestion.
    http://www.techspot.com/news/51392-former-fcc-chair-isp-data-caps-are-about-monetization-not-network-congestion.html
Isn't $135 for a 4G/LTE connection at home already too much?? Come on VZW, please raise the data caps or better yet, eliminate them and just charge for the connection.

Man..spare me the `there's only so much bandwidth to go around' speech. I live out in a podunk town that is serviced by AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, along with all the other smaller carriers. There's maybe like a dozen people in my area that might even have HomeFusion and that's because they are crazy enough to shell out $60-$120 a month for a better internet experience than satellite.
Just because YOUR area has few people doesn't mean that what Verizon should base pricing on. Verizon has standardize pricing. So they have to price for ALL areas.
I just want more data than the 30GB,, because number 1, HomeFusion is marketed as a home residential service. It's not like there are thousands of smart phones like in a mid-sized city accessing it. It's a broadband product that is marketed for family use. 30GB is a joke to give a family, when whoever it is that runs the HomeFusion department knows that a family can easily eat up 100GB if everyone were to stream movies and play games. 100GB would be more than enough for the HomeFusion subscriber that has to pay $150 just for internet. LTE is delivering 40+Mbps where I'm located.. I would settle for 10Mbps for my needs.
LTE is not a replacement for REAL internet. That's just factual. So if yo want REAL internet you'll have to move where it is. Maybe that's not fair but that's the reality. Maybe in a couple of years you can get more than 30 GB.
If Verizon is so concerned about bandwidth consumption, then use QoS metrics to balance out the bandwidth to everyone connected to a specific tower if congestion is detected.. You act like if someone uses 100GB of data over a wireless connection it's eating up all the available bandwidth a tower might have.. Not really. Suppose that 100GB is being scheduled to download at late night when the network is generally idle??
Ok then everyone will get 500 kbps. How does that sound?
I've had both Exede and Hughesnet Gen4. Fast they are, but they pull the same crap that the wireless carriers are pulling.. Claiming that people who use too much data are congesting their networks.. That's a load of crap. What's congesting the network is having low bandwidth and having too many people eating up that bandwidth to download content.. If you have 50Mbps wireless that download takes a fraction of the time it would take someone with 3-5Mbps. They get what they want fast and the available bandwidth becomes free again for whoever else may need it.
Just like mobile they are bandwidth constrained. You can belive what you want. Not believing the truth doesn't make it not true. 2+2=4 no matter how much you want it to equal 5.
It's basically called control. The carriers want control of what you can do on their networks. It used to be subscribers just paid for the connection fee and they did what they wanted. But ever since carriers thought they could monetize data usage and there's no law for them to not do it, they do whatever they want, squeezing the customer for more and more money...
Even if what you said was 100% true there is nothing you can do about it. Coming here to complain certainly won't do anything. Your choice is to either pay or not to pay.
VZW has 115 million subscribers.. do the math. They make billions each month. They make more than enough money to put back into their network to increase capacity. So does AT&T. If either carrier doesn't want their wireless networks to become too congested, then start upgrading their wireline services to fiber/cable instead of claiming they are dumping wireline services and pushing people to wireless..
Actually they do invest in their networks. They spend billions each year. Verizon has 20 MHz total for LTE right now. 10 for uplink 10 for downlink. That has to be share with Homefusion and mobile data customers both residential and business. Spectrum is a finite resource. It will take time to acquire and deploy it. Try doing some research on how mobile technology works before question the validity of what I'm saying. I did the research you should too. My posts are based on FACTS not wishes or conspiracy theories..

  • Verizon OUTRAGEOUS with forced data plans

I've used Palm products since the pilot. I've had a centro for 2 yrs with verizon...now I want to upgrade to Palm Pre 2, but verizon is forcing me to buy a $30/month data plan that I don't want and will never use. I love my palm devices for reasons other than internet access. If Verizon doesn't change this policy, I'll have to abandon palm and go with another carrier. Isn't Palm losing sales becaue of verizon's greed? They should put pressure on Verizon to abandon this outrageous, greedy tactic to abuse their customers.
    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

Contact the FCC immediately and file an informal complaint.  As a communication company, Verizon should never by permitted by the federal government to deny internet access by its VZAccess Manager firewall and unreasonable charges.  You can find the FCC information online very easily.  Fill out the PDF and submit it.  The more of us who do that, the more responsive the federal agency will be to force Verizon to reverse its predatory scheme.

  • Can Verizon add the pay date to the e-mail that is sent for billing reminder.

Can Verizon add the pay date to the e-mail that is sent for billing reminder.
Then you would have to sign on to look that up.
      Your current bill

      $261.11
      Keep in mind that
payments and/or adjustments made to your account after your bill was
generated will not be reflected in the amount shown above.

The email is quite direct. Log on to my verizon at www.verizonwireless.com and on the front page it tells you your due date.
as a rule unless you requested paperless billing, you will get a paper invoice in the mail as well.
it is due before or on your account closing date. My service runs from the 5th. of the month until the 4th. of the next month so the bill must be paid on the 4th. at the latest. (if paying on line)

  • Is it mandatory to purchase the $29.97/month data pack with a new smartphone?

I'm wondering, if I'm buying a smartphone (this one is a 3G smartphone) and don't want to use the internet or email on it for the first several months, can I just buy the $29.97/month data package at a later date in order to save money now?   Or am I forced to buy the data package now with the phone in order to get the discount price listed for the phone?
I'm wondering because it says "data plan required" next to the phone.   But what if you don't want internet or email right away?

  • Data Cap Query ...

I know this may sound dumb, but i have an iphone 4 on contract with orange, and it has a 750 MB data cap per month.
Does anybody know if it applies to both sent & recieved data, just data sent or just data recieved ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

wow ok after a million sign up screens i can finally post!
The data usage is both incoming and outgoing.
    - email
    - facetime video chat
    - facebook
    - video and audio streaming
Texts are not part of data so no worries incoming or outgoing. That's part of your messaging plan (ie: i pay $20/month for unlimited texts)
I hope this answers your question!

AWESOME NEWS EVERYONE!  Comcast has decided to Give me an unlimited service. YAY! I can know Call China, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea via my comcast landline. Plus any calls to these countries no longer count against my carefree minutes. Brilliant!. Awesome work William F. Sweeney. Why do land lines even still exsist? Havnt used a land line in Years! Even though I have no reason to call out side of the united States and my data cap is still there and I still pay 250.00+ monthly bill and my service is still horrible and I still get disconnected and I still dont always get the speeds Im promised. But what a way to try and make me feel like I get somethign valuable. Wait. I never used my land line. Its just there for the heart monitor device in case someone has a heart attack. Although if that was to happen. Comcast service soo horrible the Hostibital may never get that call. Unless maybe its calling Hong Kong. Maybe there doctors will help. Oh. and awesome news on Comcast EVEN faster service, another way to trick you into signing your soul away. Well. Its time to go pay my 250.00 bill or comcast will disconnect me with EVEN more fees.

Only Telstra is able to block Internet the way you decribe.
Anyway, let us check everthing is configured correctly in your Nokia Asha 300, a Nokia Series 40 phone:
    Menu » Settings » Configuration » Default » Options » Delete
Do that for all configuration you see there.
When all are deleted, hit the red key.
Menu » Settings » Configuration » Personal » Add or Options » Add new » Multimedia messages »
    Server address: mmsc.telstra.com:8002
    Use preferred access point: No
Access point settings » Proxy » Enabled
    Proxy Address: 10.1.1.180
    Proxy Port: 80
Bearer settings » Packet data access point: telstra.mms
When you are done, hit the red key.
    Menu » Settings » Configuration » Default » Personal configuration » Select
Now, try to send an MMS. Do you get a frame around the G? Yes, than Internet is enabled for your account. A frame says: The APN context to telstra.mms was activated successfully. If not, ask Telstra if GPMMSB3 is enabled for you. The next step is to use the correct APN of your pack. Because I am not a Teltra user, I cannt help any further. I would go for an Australian crowd based support channel, like the official one …

In the interest of keeping things orderly....This is the DATA CAP MEGA THREAD....post data cap questions or comments here.
    Please keep it civil.
Comcast is testing usage plans (AKA "data caps") in certain markets.
The markets that are currently testing usage plans are:
Nashville, Tennessee market: 300 GB per month and additional gigabytes in increments/blocks ( e.g., $10.00 per 50 GB ).
Tucson, Arizona market: Economy Plus through Performance tiers receive 300 GB. Those customers subscribed to the Blast! Internet tier receive 350 GB; Extreme 50 customers receive 450 GB; Extreme 105 customers receive 600 GB. Additional gigabytes in increments/blocks of 50 GB for $10.00 each in the event the customer exceeds their included data amount.
Huntsville and Mobile, Alabama; Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah, Georgia; Central Kentucky; Maine; Jackson, Mississippi; Knoxville and Memphis, Tennessee and Charleston, South Carolina: 300 GB per month and additional gigabytes in increments/blocks ( e.g., $10.00 per 50 GB ) Economy Plus customers have the option of enrolling in the Flexible-Data plan.
Fresno, California, Economy Plus customers also have the option of enrolling in the Flexible-Data plan.
    - If you live outside of these markets you ARE NOT currently subject to a data plan.
    - Comcast DOES NOT THROTTLE your speed if you exceed your usage limits.
    - You can check out the Data Usage Plan FAQ for more information.

I just got a call today that I reached my 300GB limit for the month.  I called and got a pretty rude response from the security and data usage department.  The guy told me in so many words that if I do not like or agree with the policy that I should feel free to find another service provider.!!! I tried to explain that we watch Netflix and XFinity on-demand alot and I was told that that can not be anywhere close to the data usage. I checked my router and watching a "super HD, dolby 5.1" TV show on Netflix will average about 5-6 GB per hour (1.6MB/s) ... sp this means that I can only watch no more than 1-2 Super HD TV shows a day via Netflix before I run out of my data usage.    This seems a bit redicilous doesn't it? Maybe the TV ads about the higher speed than the competition should be accompanied with "as long as you don't use it too often"   Not a good experience ...

  • 4G: Reached 75% of data cap while predominantly using WiFi.

I received a notification stating that I have reached 75% of my data cap, yet I have predominantly using WiFi. When i check both Verizon wireless app and the Verizon wireless website, It shows that I have used only 45% of my data cap. Is there a Verizon wireless employee available to help me with this problem? I do not want to incur an overage that should not happen.

What you have mentioned is exactly what I have been doing since I've gotten the phone. My web browsing routine involved turning off data(via data toggle in the notification pan) and only having wifi enabled. with that being said; Does the phone continue to use the 4g lte even with data turned off and wifi enabled? Also,I am waiting for a reply to the my verizon app problem. On both website and mobile app, I am at 901mb of the 2gb limit. While a text was sent to me that I am at 75%. The data monitoring feature in the phone settings also states I am at 901mb. Just to put it out there, the same monitoring app( the one found in the phone settings) states I am at 9GB data consumption via wifi.

  • Will upgrading my phone remove my 4GB per month data plan?

    Hello,
I'm currently on a month to month contract in a family plan which has 4GB for $30 per month. I was told by a Verizon rep in store that upgrading the phone and extending the contract by two years would force me to choose a new data plan... but when I review the purchase online, it doesn't seem to indicate that I will be losing this.
Will I lose my 4GB per month data if I upgrade my phone and get the two year contract?
Would upgrading another device on the family plan to the phone that I want, and then switching the new device over to the line that has the 4GB per month plan allow me to keep that data plan?
Sorry if this has been talked about already.  I've seen a lot of discussion about the unlimited data plan, but haven't seen anything about the 4GB per month plan.
    Thanks!

It sounds like you have a promo deal, double the data - there is no 4GB plan right now, there is 2 GB for $30.  If you do the upgrade in the (corporate, not an authorized reseller) store, and the rep is a good one, you MAY (emphasis on MAY) be able to keep the 4GB for $30. If it's an authorized reseller, you'll lose it since they can only choose from surrently available plans and options.
If you are seeing no change online, and you can keep your current plan, it sounds good.  I'd check my bill carefully though, as it was a promo deal and I don't know if the terms transfer to a new contract.

  • I have unlimited data, so why do I receive the text stating I've used 50% of my monthly data allowance?

I have unlimited data, so why do I receive the text stating I've used 50% of my monthly data allowance and that my data may be restricted for the remainder of my bill cycle? I've been with Verizon 15+ years and don't think its necessary to be screwed out of my unlimited plan... I heard something last year regarding Verizon limiting the unlimited plan if someone reached a certain point of usage... I'd like to have some clarity on this issue...

  • HomeFusion Data Caps

I have had Verizon Homefusion for about 2 weeks now. It seems to work well most of the time. I had one outage overnight and called customer service. They created some sort of repair report and it was working again by the time I got up the next morning.
My question is, What does Verizon have planned for the raising or elimination of the data caps? For a primary home service, these data caps are terrible. $60 for 10gig? Really? If anyone does have this service, don't plan on streaming netflix, or having many long Skype conversations. It's funny that the further into the future we go, the more internet we use. Now lots of electronic devices in your house can be connected to the internet, yet data caps are no where near keeping up with actual demand.
I'm not totally against data caps. It's just that the current data caps for this service at the price points they are at are terrible. $60 for 20 gigs seems reasonable to me for the time being. That would at least satisfy the average household. $90 for 30 gigs, and $120 for 60 gigs would be the common sense caps. But Verizon is more interested in profit than customer satisfaction.
Over the next year or so Data Caps should be raised even more for the price points mentioned. Internet access is no longer just a luxury, its a necessary part of today's world. Compare it to telephone service before it was available to everyone. If you can't afford a phone, the government will now give you one.

    stuartbp wrote:
"There ARE alternatives to HOW you receive it, though. There are lower cost alternatives. If you can't or choose not to pay the prices for Home Fusion with its current data caps, get your internet service in other ways. Libraries, for instance."
Let me know which librairies are open 24/7 and they let me hangout in my underwear while I work on work projects for 6 hours at a time.
Like I have previously said, there is a cost for doing something your way. Nothing has changed.
"About the ONLY thing I don't do with my internet service which you list is to stream content, and I come nowhere close to ANY type of cap. I have no sympathy for someone complaining about data caps when the majority of their usage is for an ENTERTAINMENT choice they make. If I choose to watch my preferred form of entertainment, I will do so. When I feel the price is too high, I will curtail my enjoyment of it. Simple as that. I would love to go to more concerts, plays, movies, etc... but when I feel the price is too steep, I DON'T GO. Therefore I do not have to pay it."
Try video conferencing....enough said. I'm sorry you live in the age of the dinosaur.
You video conference from home? Maybe you should speak to your employer about covering the data cost for the video conferencing if it is important to THEM! I video/teleconference with China and India on an almost weekly basis. More often than not a phone feed is more than enough with just access to the slides in advance. The age of the dinosaur is to not find a more cost effective way to have the meetings if the cost is what is bothering you. I assume you don't attend these video conferences in your underwear!
"Some people complain because they do not live where any other source of broadband is available, that is also a choice. I live where my availability of open space is limited. A choice I have made. Trade offs are made in life all the time. People make a choice, for example, to live in the country/suburbs and then complain they do not have the same conveniences people who live in a more urban area have. Go figure!? You can't have it both ways."
I live where no other source is currently available. I moved 3 miles. No I don't live out in a rural area. I live on a street where the cable companies decided not to run 1/2 mile of cable because it wasn't cost effective for that section. One house to the east of me has cable internet, and about 4 to the west also does. I can see cable lines on the utility poles from my driveway. To have cable hooked to my  house it will cost me between $4000-$6000 dollars per the cable company...and you know what? I will be paying to have it done because I have to, to live and work in a modern society. HomeFusion is just bridging the gap until it's done. I will never recommend it to anyone, or Verizon service as a whole.
The point being THAT YOU MOVED! YOUR DECISION. Did you not notice that there was no cable to the house? Did you not research how much it would cost for said service. There is a cost to home ownership. I assume YOU chose to move 3 miles to your current location because you liked the place. It seems you don't like EVERYTHING about it. Good for you to putting the cable in. I was in the same situation when I built a house, since it was 300ft from the road, I would have to pay for the utilities to be brought to the house. This is not unusual. To expect them to do so seems to smell of a sense of entitlement.
So you're saying that people who do live out in rural areas don't deserve broadband internet because they have more open space? People can't have both? Modern technology allows internet to be anywhere and everywhere. It's on the space station, and the nearest starbucks for them is about 20,000 miles away. I'm sorry that you live in a box just so you can have broadband internet that you don't really even need. You've gotten way off topic. I have a problem with the data caps. You ramble about things that don't compare. Did I say that, I don't think I said that. I said if you choose to live in a more rural/suburban area because you like the open space, it is hard to feel sympathy when you complain about having the same conveniences as those who live in a more densely populated area. There are choices you need to make which better suit your needs. It seems you have made yours, YOU MOVED to a spot where you would need to pay $4000-$6000 to have cable/broadband in your house. That is ONE of the choices YOU made. You are correct, there is broadband on the space station. It also costs a lot more than the HOME FUSION rates to have it there. You would rather pay THOSE rates?

  • I have data caps and need to do a clean mavericks install

    Hello.
I recently bought a used Mac mini and not realizing the new Mac OS installation options are over the internet, I erased the hard drive and tried to do the system recovery.
Unfortunately I'm on rural broadband, I have a small data cap and my connection is unreliable.  Even if I try to just do it anyway and eat the overage charges I only get corrupt downloads that won't work.  Tried downloading the installer from the local library's free wifi and made a USB stick but it still insists on re-downloading when I try to install.
Is there any way to do it offline using a copy of the OS downloaded somewhere else?  My research says no, Apple if you're listening please please provide that option.   This really ***** :(
If I go to an apple store will they charge me a lot to do it?  Would they let me plug in a monitor and keyboard/mouse and let me do it myself for free?

Most Apple Stores are pretty good. Or a friend with a large download limit. Just make sure that where ever you go to download it that you use your OWN Apple ID. Then copy it to the USB Stick, copy it to your Application folder and reinstall. (Note that the installer removes itself after installation, so keep that copy either on the USB stick or copy to an external drive, etc.)

ORDER BY 2 DESC;I have written the query to get the latest 12 months data from a table and split that into 4 quarter to show in the Cognos Report. But when the table having 13th or the past months data, the select statement is showing Empty values in the first two columns and fetching the 13 month data too.
Can anyone help me in this to avoid the problem.
    Thanks
