Version 2 Shuffle not recognised by iTunes

Greetings to all,
I hope that someone out there can help me as the Apple Centre, after 89 minutes couldn't help, (that's £9 I can't get back!)
Anyway, I bought a blue Version 2 Shuffle last month, plugged it in and iTunes burst into life, except that it, and the desktop, showed the shuffle as a white iPod! Weird! Anyway I downloaded a playlist of 95 tracks, only to find that 70 tracks showed on the shuffle....okay very weird....Also a message saying that I was running an old verion of iPod software yadda, yadda, yadda! And I should download the latest version.....easier said than done! The front page of iTune (under "device") showed 4 pages, ie Summary, Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks???? very very weird.......and to cap it all the software version said N/A, the serial number said N/A, the format said Windows(???) and I had a "greyed out" restore section. Meaning I couldn't get an update/restore even if I wanted to.
The tracks on the shuffle didn't include any Apple lossless files, even though I have a version 3 30Gb ipod that works fine with everthing on my Mac! Also my wife's 4Gb nano works fine as well. Anyway when I switched my shuffle on, it did that mutiblink thing with the lights indicating firmware problems............****!
I took it back to the store, it worked fine on their mac, a MacPro. They restored it, it played music, went home, plugged it in....it didn't work, returned it, same thing happened, they wouldn't replace it, said their engineer would make a decision over it, 3 days later...he said it was fine. Rang Apple Centre (89 min call, and 4 specialists later) they replaced it with a new one. Plugged it in, drum roll please....same **** thing! So I did the discussions route, I downloaded Ipod Restore Utility, it said it couldn't work on this iPod, hmmmm, tried Disc Utility, restored it as Mac Extended Journaled ( at least it shows as "Macintosh Format" on iTunes now).
It still however wouldn't play any music, I am running out of options, oh I also install a Sonneto USB 2.0 PCI card to upgrade my USB 1.1 ports, still no effect.
I have the current iTunes, 7.1.1
I am running OS 10.4.9.
I am getting grey hairs.
Please help.

1) This is true. Disk Utility is not helpful in this situation because the shuffle (along with most new mactel stuff) is default FAT32 and NOT mac format. So I tried what you did too and it is not possible to have a mac formatted 2nd ipod shuffle to "trick" it into working like a normal ipod.
2) This is also true though because you are never seeing the correct settings tab for the shuffle there was really no way for you to know this...
3) This has been mentioned before but I do not understand it enough to attempt it as a fix or solution to this problem...and to be quite honest it sounds alot like throwing the baby out with the bath water to me. Maybe if Deggie could post more specific information as to what "driver' is damaged this solution would make more sense. After all the drivers necessary for recognition of the device are USB related in the case of the shuffle. So is Deggie saying the USB driver is damaged? In my situation, if this were indeed the case then why is the Finder able to recognize the USB shuffle...along with all my other myriad of USB drives and devices?
Please understand my hesitation at the suggestion that the problem is the OS, especially when everything else is working absolutely perfectly. It may in the future come down to me rebuilding my laptop just to get iTunes to recognize my 2nd gen ipod shuffle, but I just think that is a undocumented risk. Rebuilding your system is any tech's LAST RESORT and I think it is fine to suggest to someone but especially for legacy mac users using it can introduce more problems than it is worth. (not to mention it might not fix anything at all!)
just my opinion in trying to solve this issue...

  • IPod Shuffle not recognised by iTunes on Mac or PC

    hi
i have just received a new ipod shuffle 1GB 2nd Gen and when i first plugged it in to my Mac it wasn't recognised by iTunes, only as a 'Volume' in Finder. I could see that it was formatted as FAT-16 which i had never heard of before, only FAT-32, so i thought i would format it for Apple (MAC OS extended - Journaled), but still it wasn't recognised. I can drag and drop files onto the Shuffle as though it was a hard drive, but nothing else. I have attempted to restore it with the Ipod reset utility, but because it isn't recognised as an ipod i get a message 'Plug in Ipod to reset it' and the 'OK' button is greyed out. I get just the same behaviour when i plug the shuffle into a PC - i.e. it shows in explorer but isn't recognised in iTunes or by the iPod reset utility. the shuffle has been plugged in for a few hours, so should be fully charged. I have tried formatting to FAT-32 as well with no joy, and repairing the disk in disk utility but it says that all is fine.
i would be grateful for any help to get my shuffle working!
    thanks

Same problem here, on 10.10.2 with iTunes 12.0.1, my iPod Classic 160 ejects immediately, on my mavericks mac with iTunes 12.0.1, all is well.
I've tried forcing iTunes not to run, by getting it into 'choose library mode' (holding down option key, whilst starting), and the iPod stays connected, but as soon as an iTunes library is chosen, it ejects.  This leads me to think, it may be a system call that iTunes is using that has changed in 10.10.2, forcing the eject.
To Xavier, I don't see an issue with my iPhone wifi sync, although as I tried reinstalling iTunes to remedy the iPod situation, I did have to set that up again on the summary page.
I've also submitted a feedback assistant report, hopefully a fix will be coming...

  • IPod Shuffle Not Recognised by iTunes

    Hi,
My 4th generation iPod Shuffle is not being recognised by iTunes.  When I plug it into my Macbook Pro, running Mountain Lion, the indicator light on the iPod will be continuous orange.  This will switch off after a couple of minutes.

Could it be a faulty cable?
Yes.  If possible, find a new one to test with.
The continuous blinking orange light indicates that the Shuffle is either in the middle of a sync operation with iTunes or is being read by another system process, but only if Enable Disk Use is enabled from under the Shuffle's Summary tab.
Is the connection nice and snug on both ends as can be seen from this article?

  • Music on shuffle not recognised after upgrading itunes

I have recently upgraded itunes from 7.02.16 to 7.5.0.20. The ipod shuffle is recognised in itunes 7.5, but the music on the ipod does not list in the contents tab. The music is shown as on the ipod in the summary tab, and will play as normal when not connected to the computer. Can anybody suggest a way for itunes to list content?

After searching the forum I finally found that others were having the same problem with the 1st Gen. Shuffle after upgrading to iTunes 7. Even though it was a different iPod Shuffle and iTunes version their solution worked for me.
All I had to do was delete the "Podcasts" folder that had been created for the Shuffle and voila!

  • IPod Shuffle Not Recognised by Mac

    Hi,
My 1st Gen iPod shuffle appears to have stopped working. When it is not connected to a machine and I press play I get the flashing orange and green lights (I believe this means there is no song on the shuffle?). The battery level shows as full so thats not the problem.
When I connect the shuffle to my MacBook Pro it is not recognised by iTunes but it is detected as an iPod in teh System Profiler. Also it is not seen in Disk Utility so i cant reformat the iPod. This all happened at the same time as I upgraded to iTunes 7.0.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

What exact version of iTunes are you running on? Got to "Help > About iTunes", and could you please report back what exact version you're on? For example, my iTunes says "iTunes 7.0.2.16".
I would suggest restoring your iPod. (Since it's showing orange and green lights).
Try the four other Five R's to try to get your iPod recognized by your computer in order to restore the iPod. (Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall).
For more info, check out this link -> The Five R's
If the restore doesn't work, try installing the iPod Shuffle Reset Utility.

  • IPhone 5 is not recognised by iTunes (Mac)

Okay so recently the sleep/wake button on my iPhone 5 was beginning to stop working.  Turns out that this is a common problem, and Apple were happy to replace my phone as it was still under warranty.  I went through the setup assistant and it prompted me to either:
set up as a new iPhone
    restore from iCloud backup
    restore from iTunes backup
I chose the last option, and the new iPhone was not recognised in iTunes.  I gave up on this and just decided to set up as a new iPhone, and decided I would restore from a backup later.  So I completed the setup and yet iTunes will still not recognise the phone.  I have tried quitting iTunes, restarting my Mac and restarting my iPhone multiple times.  I followed all of steps on the troubleshoot guide: http://www.apple.com/au/support/iphone/assistant/itunes/
My Mac is running OSX 10.8.4 and iTunes 11.0.5 and my iPhone is running 6.1.4.

What is the version of iTunes on your Mac...?
What is your Macs Operating System...?

  • My iPhone is not recognised by iTunes [iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. This device is no longer connected]

When I plug my iPhone 4 in to my MacBook Pro, it charges but it is not recognised in iTunes.
After about 30 seconds I get the following message:
"iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. This device is no longer connected."
The device still charges but is not recognised.
I've obviously tried restarting both devices / programs. I'm running the laters versions of iTunes and iOS on my iPhone. I've tried all the steps in the troubleshooting pages, and i've re installed iTunes. Stil no luck.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

I am having a very similar issue with my iPhone 5.
Yesterday I took it to the Apple Store as the battery was draining rapidly, and had the phone restored from an iCloud backup. Everything but my music was synced, and when I returned home to sync my music, the iPhone is only being recognised by iPhoto and I am having error messages from iTunes that the iPhone is not recognised and is unresponsive. I have tried everything I have found online, including trying to connect my phone to my work computer with similar messages.
    Please help!

I have not restored the ipod as I cannot get it to connect and in any case I am worried if I do restore it I will loose all the music on it and then not be able to re-load due to the prob above.
Make sure the iTunes you were installing is the latest version.
Have you tried all the solutions mentioned in the iPod nano (5th generation) - User Guide? Since you did not list all the troubleshooting steps you tried other than installing iTunes 3 times, you may as well call iPod tech support. Every iPod comes with complimentary, single-incident telephone technical support within 90 days of your iPod purchase. I_f you also purchased AppleCare, then your warranty is extended for technical support and hardware coverage for two years from the original purchase date of your iPod._

  • 80GB Classic iPod now not recognised by iTunes

All used to be OK but suddenly my 80 GB Classic iPod although being recognised by my PC is not recognised by iTunes. Sometimes a message comes up saying this, sometimes not. Have now updated to latest iTunes but no better. My old shuffle iPod is recognised OK. Help please, though I know there has been a lot of traffic on this subject.

This is typical of an iPod corrupted database.
Your iPod, as a hard drive is still recognized by Windows, but it's not identified as an iPod by iTunes.
You can repair this with CopyTrans Doctor http://www.copytrans.net/doctor.php

  • TS1538 I have just installed Windows 8.1 and now my ipad and iphone are not recognised in iTunes, can anyone help?

    Hi everyone,
This is my first post so if I've made any mistakes please forgive me. I have recently upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8.1 Professional however, now my iPad and iPhone are not recognised in iTunes. I have checked Device Manager and the iPad is listed, I also asked it to update the driver but it informed me that I have the most up to date version. Can anyone help please?

    Hi Skydiver119,
Many thanks for your prompt reply however, I found this post and it worked perfectly. I hope it helps other users.
Plug your Ipad USB cable into USB port.
Go to your Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, then click Device Manager.
Click on Portable Devices, and you should see Apple Ipad shown (or whatever apple device your using).
Right-click the Apple Device your using, and choose Update Driver Software..
Click "Browse my computer for driver software."
Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
Click the Have Disk button. (If the Have Disk option is not present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device if listed, and click next. The Have Disk button should then appear.)
In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.
Use this window to navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
Double-click the "usbaapl" file. (This file will be called "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. instead).
Click OK in the "Install from Disk" dialog.
Click Next and finish the driver-installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly.

  • IPad mini not recognised by iTunes after updating to iTunes 11.1. All other devices are recognised...

After upgrading to ios 7, adn iTunes 11, I had some problems with both airplay and having my ios devices not recognised by iTunes. After a few fixes (re-installing Apple Mobile Device support ) manually, all is now looking good, apart from my iPad mini.
Windows recognises it when I plug it into any of the USB pports on my PC, however iTunes does not see it. The device is recognised by iTunes onother windows and Mac computers I have.
Is it posible to isolate which driver is being used by the mini, and uinistall it? I guess that if Windows sees the device as a "new one", it will re-install the device driver, and probably fix this issue.
