Version 6.1 (8537.71) Safari barely functioning, today

Safari is barely functioning - all of a sudden. Started on New Year's Eve - not even Apple's page would load.  Tonight, it is several minutes for each page to barely load - took 20 minutes to get here!  I checked all systems - all is good and ran the diagnostic for Network.  Everything appears to be "working correctly" and has a good signal.  Is it Wi-Fi, the ISP or is something wrong with our Network set-up?  It was fine, Dec 31, earlier in the day.  Still today, every device is slow or non-functioning (with WiFi) including Apple TV.  Is there anything I should do?  I did a full shut down, unplug, wait and restart.  That did not help. Thanks, in advance, for any advice.  (OS X 10.8.5)

Power Cycle
Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait for few  minutes.
Power off the router. Wait a while.
Connect the router back to to the wall.
Power the router back on. Wait  until all lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
Restart the computer.

  • Safari barely works. VERY SLOW.

Three days ago, March 27, evening, Pacific Daylight Time, I tried to download something from iTunes from my Mac.  I had always used my iPad before.  It downloaded it, then when I went to play it, it said the Mac was not authorized and window came up asking for my password.  I entered and it said "Already authorized". Over and over, no matter what I did. I fiddled around a bit, nothing worked. I looked in help forums, nothing worked.
Finally I gave up. The music I had downloaded was accessible from my iPad so I just moved on and decided never to use the Mac to download from iTunes again.  I have just the two, iPad and Mac.
Next morning, Friday, when I turned the Mac on, it sat there for about ten minutes and then asked for my password (not my usual way of getting on. I am the sole user).  I thought it must be connected to my previous night's adventure with iTunes.
The system was barely working.  Restarted two or three times.  After that, I could get to Gmail with Safari.
But Safari was barely functional. I thought it was my ISP, waited a day or two.
But other people in the house who do not have Macs are finding no trouble with the internet.
Still, I cannot use Safari.  It is so slow as to be useless.  I've tried deleting cookies and clearing cache.  Does nothing.
The sites I am trying to get to are large and well known, like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
Oddly enough, I can access still Gmail and Blogger no problem.  But the news sites, forget it.
Because it started at the same time as the iTune glitch and the strange behaviour of the Mac the next morning, I wonder if it is somehow connected.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Is Safari Find function flexible? (Search for inner strings of characters?)

I'm running 10.6.8 with Safari Version 5.1.7 (6534.57.2). I see that when you search a web page using the Safari Find function, you can only search for the beginnings of words, not for character strings within the words. Is it possible to expand the Find function's capability to search for inner strings of characters?

use command F or the edit menus to make the page search box visible - click the magnify/arrow icon at the left side of it - choose "contains" or "starts with".

You’ve been infected with the “Flashback” malware. See this Apple support document:
    About Flashback malware
Back up all data, if you haven't already done so.
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ Software Update
to install the latest Java update, as well as any other available updates. That should clear the infection in most cases. You must update to the latest version of OS X 10.6 or 10.7 before you can install the Java update.
The removal tool runs automatically in the background and is then deleted. Don’t look for something to click. If the malware is removed, you’ll be notified.

Remove iAntiVirus, then reboot, see if it's better.

I have a safari browser 5.1 version, how can I update safari browser

You need to upgrade the computer's OS or switch to a product such as Firefox.
To upgrade, open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

Upgraded to LR5.7 and PS Elements 13.  Using a Solid State Drive which is becoming Full! Can I remove older versions of these programs without affecting the functionality of the new programs?

Yes, there is no need to keep previous versions of software on the SSD (or on your computer).
Also, you didn't mention this but if the photos are on the SSD, you should move them off the SSD to a regular hard disk using these instructions: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

  • My friend says:I can open Safari OK, but as soon as I try to open Google, Safari shuts down. It either does so immediately, or once I type an address or search name into Google.Mac OSX version 10.3.9, and Safari 1.3.2

On behalf of a friend (who obviously cannot get on-line):
I can open Safari OK, but as soon as I try to open Google, Safari shuts down. It either does so immediately, or once I type an address or search name into Google. The systems no longer seem to be compatible. All was well until about three weeks ago. I've pressed the Safari Reset button several times to try that, to no avail.
The operating system is Mac OSX version 10.3.9, and Safari is 1.3.2.
Is there a solution? He does say his iMac is old and the OS antedeluvian
    Would welcome any thoughts!
    B

Sorry to say it, but he is correct!
Solution? Either update the OS and Safari if possible, or start saving!

  • I have a Mac version 10.5.8 with Safari and I can't watch video's... I can download flash player but it won't work.

I can't watch video on my Mac version 10.5.8 with Safari.

    Could be Flash Player problem.
Two bugs, one affecting Apple's Mac platform and another attacking Microsoft's Windows, exploit certain Flash player vulnerabilities to install malware onto users' systems, reports ArsTechnica. While users of other operating systems like Linux have yet to report attacks, Adobe's advisory notes the exploit affects all platforms.
Designated as CVE-2013-0634, the first vulnerability targets the Safari and Firefox Web browsers running on OS X, and is also being used as a trojan to deploy Microsoft Word documents containing malware. For Mac users, the flaw affects Adobe Flash Player version 11.5.502.146 or earlier.
The Adobe Flash patch can be found on the company's website, and users can visit this page to check if their software is the most curent version.
