Version 8.0 question

Version 8.0 question: I have 2 Macs, MacBook with 10.6.8 and iMac with 10.8.2. Previously ran Version 8.0 on both for years with 10.6.8 before updating iMac to 10.8.2. I know that version 8.0 will not run on 10.8.2, so I made a startup disk from the MacBook to run 10.6.8 and version 8.0 on the iMac. Works fine, except that I cannot start version 8.0. I get the screen message: "Could not initialize Photoshop because disk is not available. what am I doing wrong and what can I do to run my old version of the iMac? Thanks in advance

2 issues - Invalid Serial Number issue & Lightroom 5 Trial vs full version folder hierarchy question

not sure if I should split these two questions...
1 - Invalid Serial Number issue
I'm helping out a friend with their large photo collection and they bought Lightroom 5 and received the serial number but when we add this to Lightroom it states that it's invalid - I tried leaving it until the following week (I visit them weekly) and it still refusing the number - when I went into their Adobe account and took a look at downloads the option to download the full version is greyed out (or an x - I'm not sat on their computer right now so can't double check) but it wouldn't allow me to do anything so we just had the trial version.
anyone know what the issue is - shall I get them to contact Adobe to get them to take a look - I also had issues trying to find a customer support email address lol. (I seem to faffing with lots of websites/software/companies this week so getting a little frazzled!)
2 - Lightroom 5 Trial vs full version folder hierarchy question
This question is linked to the above i- I am wondering if the folders in Lightroom are different in the trial version vs the fully paid version.
I had set up some greeting card templates and contact sheet layouts for my friend and tried to transfer them to her computer but whilst, LR 'sees' the folders it just doesn't acknowledge the templates - I tried it several ways but I've not had that issue before so will that sort itself when I get the serial number fixed?

Hi Lenny, the two questions may be related but the trial is actually the same as the full version. I would suggest getting the serial number issue sorted out first. There have been known issues where a paid for product still shows up as a trial.There is not a lot the community can do. You need to contact Adobe directly using the link below. Use the dropdown menu for boxes (1) & (2) to scroll down the list and choose:
1. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
2. Serial number issues or activating my product

FCP crossgrade from educational version one more question

I just recieved my new MacBook Pro! I see that I need to upgrade my Educational version of FCP 4.5 HD to 5.1 along with the whole acedemic studio in oder to use it/ them on my new intel based computer. I also see that I should be able to upgrade/ cross grade from my Educational version. On the PDF instructions for the upgrade they list a number after Final Cut Pro Academic HD (M9153LL/B). My question is what does that number refer to, do I need that number printed on my install disk in order to upgrade? I have a different number printed on my install disc.

The number they're referring to is the retail part number for the software. As far as I know, its printed on the box the software was packaged in - probably also on your original invoice.

Version/graphic card question

My mac currently has version 10.6.8. My friend told me that there is a 10.7.3 version. How do I turn my 10.6.8 into a 10.7? My second question is that I currently have the graphic card NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. Is that weaker/ older than the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M? If so is it possible to replace/ upgrade my macbook pro with the better version? If so how do I replace it? Do I simply just buy the new graphic card? Sorry I am kind of new with this type of computer technology.

If your new to computers, don't do anything but run Software Update under the Apple Menu and make your off the computer backups.

10.6.8 will run fine on your older machine, in fact better than 10.7.
You have a machine from either 2008 or 2009, which would put it about 4 years old and nearing it's end of life stage. It's highly likely not covered by AppleCare any longer, so any issues you will have will be yours alone to resolve.
You can't replace the video card on Mac's, except the Mac Pro and there is hardly any third party cards anyway.
Installing 10.7 will make you either go without or require a paid upgrade for most of your third party software, and likely a lot of your third party hardware drivers for your present equipment may not have a update for 10.7

IMO for your machine, and you not being computer savvy, is to remain on 10.6.8 until the wheels fall off that machine, if you can make it until this time NEXT year, then buy a brand new, spanking, latest, fastest, greatest machine with 10.8 as by then all the bugs will have been worked out and software ready, buy all new software and any new hardware you will need transfer your files from backup or the older machine as you break in the new one.
If your present machine conks out before then and you need another one, try to wait until this summer when 10.8 is released and buy a machine then. A machine with a OS installed is easier to deal with than upgrading one. As Apple tests with the newest OS first on the latest hardware, all those who upgrade have to deal with issues from upgrading on older hardware.
At this point for you with that machine to go to 10.7 and the money, time and aggravation of dealing with a new OS and software is better left for a new machine where you get three months of free hand holding from Apple
Some may chide me for being anti-Lion, but I don't see the sense of you going through something that's unnecessary for a older machine when 10.8 is being released a few months from now and likely will not run on your machine.
So then you would be behind again and looking at buying a new machine with 10.8 anyway right?
So skip the Lion and be happy. Time your new purchase so you get the free hand holding and the new OS at the same time.

Elements & Premiere Version 10 Install Question

I got a new Mac for Christmas. I would like to install Elements & Premiere version 10 on it because I own it already and it was working fine. I have the disks but this new Mac has no dvd drive. I don't want to upgrade to version 12 of the software because version 10 was working just fine. Is there a way I can download the software and then just enter my product key?

Hi Ned - Thanks for the email but I can't seem to get this to work. I first downloaded through Chrome but since it wouldn't allow me to finish the install process I thought maybe I needed to do it through Safari so I did that (making sure it wasn't blocking cookies and allowing pop-ups and stuff and it still said:
"Install" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. "Install" is on the disk image "PhotoshopElements_10_WWEFDJ-2.dmg". Safari downloaded this disk image today at 2:00 PM from prodesigntools.com."
Not sure what to do next....?

Adobe Premiere Pro (Version 7.0) Question

We have Adobe Premiere Pro (Version 7.0) at our studio and we run into a glitch everytime we import an AVI file type into the program. We have learned that the file type itself is not corrupted, however, when each file is dragged into the timeline, we notice that at roughly 4 minutes and 57 seconds all footage becomes frozen. The image freezes as does the audio. We have only tried this with two seperate AVI files and have not tested any other file types.

Cluster Version control Design question

Hi All,
I have an application where I store the data in a cluster. Suppose this is my ver. 1 of the application and the cluster consists of 3 I32. and I ship this application to the customer.
Now for the ver 2 I want to store a string to the cluster so I updated my cluster to 3 I32 and 1 String. But this ver 2 should also be able to read ver 1. just like MS Word 2007 is able to read .doc files
In my design, I am stroing the version number and data(as variant) in a cluster and convert that cluster to variant and do a 'variant to flattened string' before saving it to a file.
I am attaching my desing protoype here so you get a better idea of what I am talking about and suggest me if you think it can be done in a better way.

Student version CS4/CS5 question...

Hi All,
I have read many comments on the web re Adobe offering free upgrades to persons purchasing CS immediately prior to a new reference release. Is there an official response on how long the period prior to release is and does this apply to student versions (I was advised that the student versions are not upgradable)? Thanks,

It seems to me like you are asking about a post-announcement upgrade for an academic version. The information here leads me to believe that you can get the free upgrade with a student version.
This upgrade policy applies only to single-user retail and educational
versions. Tryout, Beta, Not For Retail (NFR), and bundled OEM versions
are not eligible for upgrade.
What I don't know is if the grace period for CS4 > CS5 has started now, with this pre-annoucement or if this policy doesn't take effect until the 12th.

You can buy the upgrade and it will install version 6 (with your version 5 serial number making you eligible to pay the lower upgrade price).
Only those who have never previously owned Lightroom must pay full price for the full version of LR6.
The program code for full and install is identical. The only difference is the price you pay.
Version 6 will install alongside your version 5. It won't remove version 5 during the installation process. It's up to you whether you leave version 5 installed or uninstall it.

A versioning/FCP roundtripping question

Hi all. I cut a trailer in FCP and roundtripped to Motion to add graphics, mostly text-based effects, maps, etc. Now I need to do various no-effects/limited-effects versions of the trailer. What's the quickest way to accomplish this, in other words, to maintain the version I have while "turning off" various effects on certain shots?

What Mark said. When I'm planning ahead, I duplicate the clip on my FCP timeline before sending it to Motion. Then I disable one of the copies in FCP (ctrl-B), and send the other one to Motion. When I need to do the clean version of the sequence, I disable the Motion clip and re-enable the original. This has taken me much longer to explain than it does to do...

Correct firmware version for WRT160N questions

The lable on my 160 simply reads WRT160N. I assume this means it is hardware version 1. Is this correct? The serial # is CSE01GC30689.
The installed firmware is v 1.02.2, 10 Nov 07. In Linksys' downloads for firmware, v 1.02.2, 10 Jan 08 is shown. Are these the same versions or are they different?
If different, should I update?

I believe your assumption is correct about the version # of your router -- the same ver. # with the two different dates is a little confusing though -- I would think the one dated 1-10-08 has some additional fixes in it -- the release notes show 32 of them
But -- you didn't mention that you are having an issue with your router - and if this is the case -- you probably shouldn't do a firmware update - (If it's not broken -- no need to fix it)

Retail Boxed Version of Aperture Question

Does the retail boxed version of aperture come with printed copies of all the pdf's included electronically (full manula, getting started, image adjustments)? I like having hard copy reference materials and this will factor in on my decision to order an electronic serial number or just get the retail box.

It does come with a thick instruction manual, some instructional DVD's and a cool printed keyboard shortcut guide on cardstock.
Can't beat a good 'ole boxed version of software. Reinstallation and digging for serial numbers is much easier with a physical copy. I am done doing online serial #'s and purchases. I'll take the boxed version thank you.

Mobile Email (latest version 7.53) Questions

I downloaded and installed the latest version 7.53 of Mobile Email for my LG enV Touch. Is there a way to change the email alerts from vibrate to a tone? Also, I want to change my email signature signature to include more information on separate lines but every time I hit the return key I exit the program. Is there a fix?

Scroll to Settings & Tools.

Choose Tone, Vibrate, or Reminder, press OK.
