Version names ignored when relocating a library

I've run into some odd behavior when trying to relocate a library (to a set of folders on disk, rather than the managed library location) using the "Relocate Originals for Library" feature.  I'm hoping maybe somebody here has seen this and can either let me know if I'm doing something wrong, or perhaps if this does in fact look like a bug in Aperture.
The relocation dialog provides a variety of options for automatically creating a folder structure (which works brilliantly) as well as naming the relocated original images.  The issue I'm seeing is that when I tell Aperture to use "version names" as the naming method for the files, *some* of the relocated images ignore their version name and show up with their original file names.  I have pored over the images and cannot figure out what the difference is between the images that would cause some to seemingly randomly ignore their file names.  This happens even within a set of images shot with the same camera within minutes of each other, with similar adjustments applied.  All are RAW images, but I'm not sure if that matters.  But some are correctly named as their version name, and some have the original filename out of the camera.
Any ideas?

But some are correctly named as their version name, and some have the original filename out of the camera.
I am seeing this happen, when two or more selected images have the same version names. Then the second  relocated image will be relocated with the original filename to avoid overwriting originals by a different file with the same name. Do you have image versions with the same name? Perhaps due to batch renaming them?

  • Sharing photos by e-mail arranged by version name

I need to send all photos in one project from Aperture by e-mail arranged by version name. That is, all photos in the letter must be ordered by version name. When i use Share button Aperture generates an e-mail where the photos are mixed.
Does anyone know how to do it?

unfortunately the photos mix in the body of the email message...
probably my Aperture needs some additional adjustments...
You can "select all" in the body of the email message and "{right-click}➞View as Icon".  This makes seeing the filenames easier, and makes it easier to rearrange the files.
Yes! when i do this i can see the filenames mixture: 3,5,8,1,2,6, etc instead of 1,2,3,4,5...
You can export the files to a Finder Folder, and then import them into a mail message.  This may make ordering the files the way you want them easier.
You can ask your recipient to save the files to a Finder Folder (or equivalent) and sort on file name and view them from the Finder (using Quick View).
You can export as a Web Gallery and send the Web Gallery to your recipient with instructions to double-click it.  This should open in their Web browser.
yes, i know it. but it's less convenient for me

  • Using Project Name in Version Name on import?

I'm just testing Aperture and I'm confused about the options available for renaming raw files on import.
Currently testing a setup like this using:
    (Folder)2008
    ..(Folder)January
    ....(Project)Job1
    ....(Project)Job2
When I import files from my CF card I would like to rename the files using a format like this: YYYYMMDDProjectNameUniqueIDfromCamera. So a raw file from my 5D named MG4380.CR2 would be renamed 20080215Job14380.CR2.
Unfortunately, when I go to the Version Name options when importing I don't see the option to place the "Project Name" variable in the filename. This seems strange to me, especially since it is available in the Subfolders options.
Any advice or do I need to drastically change my current filenaming system if I want to use Aperture?
    Thanks very much,
    Andrew

I know what you're saying Ian, and I appreciate your help, but Master File uses the whole filename and I just want to retain the unique number created by the camera. This is what most other applications I've used like Photo Mechanic, Image Ingestor and Downloader Pro do, so I kind of expect it now.
When I was talking about retyping data, I meant that when I create a Project Name I have to enter the info manually (including the job date if I want to use that), and then when I rename the files I'm importing I have to re-type the same info again because I can't use the project name in the file name. So in the Project Name I have to enter the date manually, but when renaming the files it can pull the date from the camera exif data. So that's one place you could end up with a mismatch from a typo. Any then when I'm entering the jobname manually more than once there is another place to make a typo.
This may sound overly anal and I can assure you that I'm not a complete, ham-fisted illiterate prone to typing mistakes, but I have certainly made mistakes in the past that caused files to be place somewhere I didn't expect them to be.
In my perfect world I would be able to click "import" and then create a new project using a custom job name, but a date that is pulled from the camera exif like this YYYYMMDD_JobName, and then the images would be imported into a folder of the same name and renamed as YYYYMMDDJobNameUniqueID.
So I would only have to type the job name once, I would never have to manually type the job date, and my projects would automatically be sorted chronologically.
It seems very simple and makes sense to me, but maybe I'm weird
    Cheers,
    Andrew

  • Setting version name when relocating masters

During the initial phase of moving to Aperture, I have changed my image library structure a bit as I learn how to manage it.
I made one more change and went to relocate the masters, which worked great except for one thing: it relocated the masters, but did not update the version names to reflect the new location.
I like my version name base and file name to be the same, at least to start out.
Is there any way from the relocate operation to do this?
Or do I have to export and re-import to get version names reset?

  • Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, it only allows 9 spaces for my new name, even though Aperature 3 allows many more spaces than that for version names. This creates a lot of problems and headaches for me.

Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, Aperature 3 only recognizes the first 9 spaces for raw .NEF files, even though it easily uses twice that many spaces for version names. I have a system in place that works really well for me, wherein by changing the file name I can recognize what's important to me just by glancing at the file name, no matter what system it is in, I do not have to open or mouse over anything to know what the file is. My files also arrange themselves in order no matter what file system they are in. Can someone please tell me if there is a setting, or something I am doing wrong, that prevents me from using a longer Master file name. I can't be the only person who would like to have his Master File names correspond to the name that appears in the Aperature library, and would like to use at least 16 spaces (numbers, letters, etc.)
    Thanks,

    Hi Frank,
As you suggested, I am attaching several screen shots. In the first one you can see how I set up my preset. I used "Custom Name" and "Counter" with a dot between the two drag ins, followed by "D90". I also have a dot to seperate the 8 digits in the Custom Name and make it easier to read.
I then click "OK" which takes us to the second screen shot. Here you can see that in the Example File Name everything looks perfect, and you can see I have clicked on "Apply to Master Files".
In the third screen shot you can see that the version in my library did in fact change correctly. With the "mouse over" pop up screen you can see, however, that the Master File name was changed  to "1933.1017.NEF". It failed to carry the "12D90" and if I go to where my masters are stored that is exactly what the name was changed to.
In the fourth screen shot I attempt to export the master. You can see how my "Version Name" is set up.
And finally on the 5th screen shot you see in the File Name Example the name "1933.1017.NEF" once again, which when I export the master is exactly how the name will appear. Since I will export more than one file at a time , a (1) and  a (2)  etc., will appear at the end of the names because all the files are being given the same "1933.1017.NEF" name.
I hope this reply does a better job of clarifying my problem. I am anxious to see if this is something I simply misunderstood, or if I am simply doing something wrong.
    Thanks,

  • I have recently updated to iPhoto 9.2.1, more by accident I guess. In the older version off iPhoto when I imported photos and gave the event his own name, this name was also used in the "masterfile"

I have recently updated to iPhoto 9.2.1, more by accident I guess. In the older version of iPhoto when I imported photos and gave the event his own name (for exampample "110723 birthday son 2011"), this name was also used in the "masterfile", so I could find the file by his name ("110723 birthday son 2011") in the "masterfile" on my HD and copy and paste it from there to other computers.
In the new version the file gets stored under a seemingly random number, which does not give me any information about the content.
Is there a way to fix this? Would it be different in apperture?
    Thanks
    Harald

I have Iphoto '09, version 8.1.2 (424). I am having an identical problem.  All my pictures are imported into Iphoto when I downloaded them from my camera.  Until recently, I thought that the pictures were actually saved in the library.  Since I need to crop my pictures for the web, and Iphoto doesn't do that, I purchased Photoshop Elements to do that.  To my surprise, when I try to get a picture from Iphoto to Photoshop, it can't be done. That was when I realized, after wasting a lot of time, that the photos are not in the Iphoto library.
I started naming the pictures on Iphoto so I had a recognizable file name to open on Photoshop. Couldn't find it.  I looked in the Backup folder and the Transfer software folder (I have a Nikon camera), and the names I entered in the Iphoto display, could not be found.
When I am trying to upload a photo to the web, I get the Finder folder showing  with an active folder called "Photos" under "Media", which only displays Iphoto and PhotoBooth.  This is a folder name that I cannot find in my HD anywhere when I look for it.  If I edit a picture with Photoshop, I am not going to save it back to Iphoto (not sure whether it will work properly).  How do I get my folder of edited photos to show when I want to upload a picture to the web?
Where (the name of the folder) do I find the pictures I see displayed on the Iphoto library, including any name changes, keywords added, and so on?

  • Cannot change library path or name when configuring a library call function

I cannot change the library path or name when configuring a library call.  I browse to the new location, click OK.  The new path appears  in the box.  I click OK to dismiss the configuration.  Then I re-open the configuration and the old path has magically appeared.  I wouldn;t care but I get a fatal error whenever I execute the call.  (Another VI with the same call but to a different library works fine.  So I am trying to get the failing call to use the one that works.)

    I am using version 7.1
It turns out that everything works fine in LV 2010 but the customer doesn't have that rev.
I am remotely debugging this using GoToMeeting.  Sounds weird, but I fell into that.  It works fine, I have a screen which looks exactly like the screen in the customers site.  I can do everything, albeit with a little time drag.  The thing is, I e-mailed the VI from his site to mine so that I could send it to you.  But it works fine here.  So the question is what could be different there that would cause this?
The main problem that I am trying to solve is that when I run the VI, I get a message
"Labview:  An exception occurred within the external code called by the Call Library Node.  This might have corrupted Labview's memory. Save any work to a new location and restart Labview"
If I set the Library Node on my machine to the correct function, it runs without error.  It seems, however, to start with a different function and then I get the same error.  I would think that if there is a parameter mismatch that the library would return an error status, but this appears not to be the case.  (I did not write the library, HP (Agilent) did)  The function is correct at the customer's machine.

  • Lost photos! aaaggh! (iPhoto 08). I disconnected my HDD temporarily when relocating.I synced my iphone and iPhoto it seems has rebuilt the library from the old copy

I have two ext HDD intended to ensure I don't lose my photos( iPhoto 08). I disconnected my HDD temporarily when relocating.
I then synced my iphone and iPhoto it seems has rebuilt the library from the old copy of the library (2011. I have Time Machine but I can't restore the last 3y photos as I guess Time machine does not back up the other HDD.
Any chance of finding my treasured photos somebody?

Sounds like you have another iPhoto library someplace - under no conditions would iPhoto revert a library to an older one - you just need to find and open the correct one
Depress and hold the option key, launch iPhoto and use the resulting select library to look st the libraries you have

  • Repaired library and version names are missing. How to get them back?

I'm sorry for the dumb question. I would think the answer is staring me in the face, but for the life of me I can't find it.
I repaired the library and now the version names do not appear with the photos in the library. I assume a simple preference was reset, but I can't find it anywhere to get the version names back. I must be blind.
    Help?

Ok. I knew if I looked hard enough I would find it.
In the lower right corner of the browser is the "Meta Data Overlays" pop up menu button. Click that and choose the meta data to appear in the browser.

  • ITunes is ignoring my relocated library.

I relocated my library to a larger hard drive, using iTunes to accomplish the task. Now when I open iTunes nothing is there! What can I do to resolve this?

hmmm... are you saying that i should point iTunes to an empty folder, which it will then copy to? I had always thought the idea was to point to where the majority of your files already were. The command is 'consolidate', not 'copy' or 'move'.
I've never tried it that way, and I've been doing it my way for years and this is the first time its given me grief. To be clear, prior to consolidate [after the move], iTunes doesnt seem confused finding and playing the files. It knows whats what then, so why cant it see that, and save itself a ton of work when consolidating.
To be fair, I do see how this would explain the current problem, and I will end up trying this if I cant figure out something that doesnt involve copying 50 gigs again.
Please clarify if you mean that I should point and consolidate to an empty folder, and if not, what it is Im doing improperly.
    thanks again,

  • Import iPhoto Title as Aperture Version Name?

QUESTION: How do you import your iPhoto library such that the Titles you've applied in iPhoto become the Version Names in Aperture?
DETAILS: Upon import, Aperture ignores my custom iPhoto Titles ("Lunch at Summit", for example) and replaces them with the original file name (DSCF2966, for example). I hate looking at a screen full of DSCxxxxx names. Worse, I've spent a lot of time titling my pictures in iPhoto. I don't want to lose that work.
BACKGROUND: In iPhoto, I typically Batch Change a just-imported set of photos, setting the Title to nothing. Then I give meaningful names to pictures that I care about titling. This way, I reduce visual clutter on the photo display; any title text I see is there because I typed it in. When I try this trick in Aperture, it displays "<untitled>" for any pictures I remove the camera's DSCxxxxx from.
QUESTION 2: Is it a bad idea to get rid of the camera DSCxxxx Version Names?
I've experimented with the Import settings, searched these forums, the web, and the Aperture help files, to no avail.
    Thanks!
    David Long

Kirby, thanks for your helpful response. I just experimented with the Version Name field in the iPhoto import dialog and found that setting Version Name to Version Name in the
    File-->Import-->iPhoto Library...
import dialog still does not preserve the Titles from iPhoto.
    However, using
    File-->Import-->Show iPhoto Browser...
DOES preserve the iPhoto Titles. Unfortunately, this method loses much of the Places information in the iPhoto library. I describe which Places info gets lost in this forum post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11229662#11229662
So, this leaves us with a conundrum:
-If we use the "Show iPhoto Browser..." method to import, we retain our Titles but lose our Faces and Places data.
-If we use the "Import-->iPhoto Library..." method, we retain [most of] our Places and Faces data, but completely lose our Titles from iPhoto.
Either way, we lose some of the metadata work we put into our iPhoto library.
Anybody know a solution to this problem?

  • Invalid File Name Errors when syncing to Ipod

Ever since an update last fall I have been getting Invalid file name errors when I try to sync my ipod. A window would pop up saying "Windows could not copy 'SONGNAME' to the iPod 'IPODNAME' because an unkown error occurred (-37)." I would press OK and another window would immediately pop up that would say, "Attempting to copy to the disk 'IPODNAME' failed. the file name is invalid or too long."
The windows would keep popping up countless times until the sync would just seem to time out and stop.
The problem songs would have no problem playing in iTunes.
Prior to the update this did not happen. No new songs were added around this time and nothing was changed to my file directory structure. I was too busy to troubleshoot this problem at the time and hoped that another update would fix it. Well, here I am many months and updates later and still no fix. After fiddling with iTunes and resetting my Ipod multiple times (goodbye saved angry bird games)I have found out that:
    1. By writing down the file name when the error windows pop up I can get a partial list of the problem file names. I could not get a complete list of the problem files because the sync would time out before a full list could be compiled (the list appears to be in the hundreds).
    2. If I changed the name of the file by adding OR deleting one character, remapping the song in itunes, the song would then sync properly.
    3. If I changed the name of the file, remapped the location of the file within iTunes, changed the name of the file BACK to the original name that iTunes supposedly had a problem with, and then remapped the location of the song within iTunes, the song would then sync properly
    4. If I moved the song to a different directory without changing the file name, remapped the song within iTunes, the song would sync properly.
    5. If I moved the song to a different directory without changing the file name, remapped the song within iTunes, moved the file BACK to the original directory, remapped the song again, the song would sync properly.
    6. If I renamed the file and then named it back to the original file name WITHOUT remapping the file location in iTunes, the song would still not sync properly
    7. If I moved the file into a different directory and then back again without remapping the file location, the song would still not sync properly.
    8. Changing or deleting the tags has no effect at all.
    9. File name lengths are already under 200 characters and there are no special characters used.
So, to sum up, I have found out a way to fix the issue. The problem is, that there are hundreds of songs that appear to be affected and renaming or moving every single one individually and then remapping is extremely inefficient and ignores the cause of the problem. I also did not want to delete the itunes library and then add all of the songs back in because I have many custom playlists that I have spent hours creating and I do not want to delete them.
Is there a better way to fix the problem? Especially if someone knows the root cause?

I got a procmon log file and examined it. I have the file and I could also provide you with that or screenshots of it.
There is nothing unusual about it. I can see entires in which CR has successfully opened the report and has cached in a c:\windows\temp.
However there is one or two non-successful entries that may be related, especially that examining the stack trace brings us to a call to get_ProductLocaleID():
    - A call to read reg entry HKU\S-1-5-20\Software\Business Objects\Suite 12.0\Crystal Reports\Locale fails with NAME NOT FOUND.
    - immediately after that and from the same process (w3wp.ex) there is a call to open directory "c:\" which is logged as ACCESS DENIED.
Any subsequent unsuccessful calls seem to be results of exception handling in the debug code.
Does this point to any setup issues with CR? We always run the redistributable x86 runtime when installing it.

hey guyz.. i wanna ask if i get an updated version from itunes when i plug my iPhone into the Pc, i get a letter tells me that there is an update for your iPhone ... i wanna ask is it safe to download ?? and does it make any side effects on longTerm using ??

It is safe to download if your phone is not jailbroken. Before you download it, however, take some precautions:
    Reboot your computer
    Disable your antivirus and firewall
Connect the phone cable to a USB port directly on the computer, not a hub
Before updating right click on the name of the phone in iTunes and choose "Backup"
When you are given the choice choose "Download only", not "Download and Update"
After the download completes successfully click the Update button to install it.
Most of these steps are just being overly cautious, as most people ignore them and have no problems. But occasionally the extra steps save grief.

  • How to batch change Caption with version name?

I'm using Aperture 3.0.2. I want to caption the photos based on version name. This way when I export the photos from Aperture to Picasaweb, the caption will show. This will allow the visitors to tell me which image proof that I need to re-touch.

I found my own answer. I wrote this AppleScript. It's my first AppleScript ever. It's nice to Goggle and found some other resources.
    tell application "Aperture"

    if imageSel is {} then

    else
repeat with i from 1 to count of imageSel

    make new IPTC tag with properties {name:"Caption/Abstract", value:get name}
    end tell

  • Any way to stop facebook exporter from using version names as the caption

I tried the Aperture 3 facebook export and it is using the version names as the caption. If I change the caption on facebook it then changes the version name in my aperture library when it syncs with facebook. Is there anyway to have it use the caption meta data field instead? You would think if they had that option for mobile me they would have it for FB too.

Add me to the list of people interested by this issue - but AFAIK there is no way to change this. Let's hope Apple fixes this soon.
