Version *naming* possible in Lion?

I have not yet upgraded to Lion, and before I do I need one question clearly answered concerning automatic saves and file versions in Lion.
The question is, can one name versions of a document (of any kind) and then browse for and open that specific version.  If "Yes", then the loss of "Save as" isn't so bad. If "No", then Apple really screwed it.
In case you didn't get that, suppose you have a file called ModelNamePrettyPic.jpeg.  You may have many versions of that file, but the version you sold to the Times needs more than a filename and sea of versions. It needs a filename AND a version name (perhaps sometiming like Times Cover September Issue;1479). Then we know exactly where we are.   Not all versions need a name, but one or more most definitely do.
So, does Lion do version names?  This isn't just date and time, I need to give my versions meaningful names. If cannot do that, I certainly cannot use Lion in its current implementation.
Answers please,
Stephen.

You can say that again.  The whole autosave/removal of the 'Save As' functionality has been an utter screw up.  Steve Jobs said .Mac and Mobileme wasn't their finest hour because it didn't do what it was meant to.  Well this situation isn't far off.  The most intuative operating system just became confusing and counter and intuitive.
I've been keeping an eye on this stupid amendment to the Mac OSX operating system since it came to light in Lion.  Despite all the other improvements in Mountain Lion, by not reinstating the basic Save As functionality that I have had as a MAC user for the past 16 years, it basically makes it a less helpful OS.  It takes longer to use time machine and doing the work arounds etc. than just keeping various drafts with different file names for my work.
I need to buy a new macbook pro and have been holding out for the function to be restored.  I don't think that this'll ever happen now and Apple are guilty of not listening to their customers.  Looks like Windows 8 might get a new customer....and I never thought I'd hear myself say that. Sigh

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • I have held on to AppleWorks for as long as possible but Lion no longer supports it. Is there an app out there that converts AppleWorks to something Lion recognizes?

HELP!  I have held on to AppleWorks for as long as possible but Lion no longer supports it. Is there an app out there that converts AppleWorks to something Lion recognizes?

You can use Apple's iWorks suite of programs (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) to do most of it in Lion.
Pages will open AppleWorks 6 word processing documents.
Numbers will open AW 6 spreadsheets.
Keynote will open AW 6 presentations.
You may already have those apps on your machine if you acquired it recently. If not, you can get them individually from the Mac Apple Store via download at about US$20 each; or on disk from the Apple Store for about US$80.
Note - with regard to word processing documents, Pages will open AW 6 versions, but not any earlier versions (such as AW 5 or ClarisWorks). So, be sure to update all you docs to AW 6 before transferring them to the Lion-booted machine.

  • What iPhoto version is compatible with Lion OSX 10.7.5 and will it let me make photo calendars?

What iPhoto version is compatible with Lion OSX 10.7.5 and will it let me make photo calendars?
I have just upgraded from Leopard to Lion (via Snow Leopard) because I could no longer order photo calendars with iphoto 7.1.5.  However, I still have iphoto 7.1.5 and need to upgrade this.  From the App store it looks as though I cannot get iphoto 9.5.1 due to the incompatibility with Lion.  I was recemmended not to upgrade beyond Lion due to the age of my iMac computer (2008 version) by Stormfront staff.
What is the best iphoto to upgrade to and how do I do this e.g. iLife '09 or '11, or are there any other 'stand-alone' versions of iphoto that would be compatible?  How do I know whether my computer is capable of upgrading to Mountain Lion?  I definitely want to be able to make photo calendars, books and cards.
    Thanks

iPhoto '09 or '11 - purchase an iLife '09 or '11 DVD (amazon or eBay are potential sources) and install iPhoto and update to the latest version for your OS

  • Please help me as.. i got an update of 10.7.5 and current version is os x lion 10.7.3

i got an update of 10.7.5 and current version is os x lion 10.7.3 as i always do to update it and at the end it says the update is tampered
    please help me

You could try restarting into the Lion Recovery HD by pressing/holding the Command+R keys until you see the Apple logo. From the OS X Utilities Menu, select Reinstall Mac OS X which will download/reinstall Lion, but it will be the most current version of Lion (10.7.5). The install will not harm your data or apps. It just reinstalls the OS. Once the install finishes, run Software Update to bring your system current.
Back up your system before doing any of the above!
One Question: Are you sure you're running Lion 10.7.3 and not Mountain Lion 10.8.3?  Because your original post shows you're running Lion 10.7.5.

  • How to save as an older version in numbers for lion

my mom just got a new macbook air. we are sharing files on dropbox and everytime she opens a numbers file it does an autosave and then i can't read it because i have numbers '08. is there no way to back save to an older version of numbers in lion? sure, i get that i'll need to upgrade at some point but i'd at least like access to the files she's opned and maybe need to stop sharing them with her for a while until i upgrade my software. i tried walking her through the traditional save as process and we almost made each other mad because she wasn't seeing what i expected her to see in numbers' pull-down menu.

why isn't iCloud working on OS x version 10.7.2 (lion) but it works on windows 7

Hello, & a warm welcome to the Forums & Macdom!
    Might try one of these...
Instead of joining it from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed. Before I went through network diagnostics and all of that stuff in system preferences, and then I tried the "Join Other Network" method, and now it works like a dream.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

  • Which is the latest iPhoto version compatible with Mountain Lion ?

Please, which is the latest iPhoto version compatible with Mountain Lion?
I just updated my OS X to 10.8.5 and still have iPhoto '11 v9.2.3. I have been unable to find if there is a newer compatible version of iPhoto; while I know that iPhoto 9.5.1 is incompatible with Mountain Lion.

Do you know where I can get it?
If you have a version of iPhoto '11 installed, try the updater, that Terence Devlin linked to. If you do not already own a version iphoto '11, buy an installer disk from for iLife '11 from Amazon or eBay. You cannot download a full installer for free, only updates.

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Are you running a firewall or anti-viral software that could be corrupting the file as it downloads? If so, disable the software for the Mt Lion download.

  • How do I import addresses from Address Book Ver 4.1.2 to the Lion Address Book version 6.1? Lion will not allow me to open Address book Version 4.1.2

How do I import addresses from Address Book Ver 4.1.2 to the Lion Address Book version 6.1? Lion will not allow me to open Address book Version 4.1.2 to get to the addresses to copy

Do you have any addresses in the Lion version?
If not, copy the AddressBook folder from your username/Library/Application Support/ folder on the old mac (or backup).
Copy it to the same location on your new Mac, replacing the one that is there. Start Address Book in Mountain Lion and it should convert the files to the correct format.
If you do have addresses, it is a little more complicated.
First, create a Contacts Archive (from File>Export menu). This will be your backup.
Next, export the current contacts as vCards.
    Then, follow the steps above.
Then, import all the cards you exported. If you select all and double-click, it will ask if you want to add them. You'll then have to add them to whatever groups you had set up.

You can but only in TextEdit and Preview and only if you have access to a Snow Leopard installation. Check out the link near the end of this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3745201?start=0&tstart=0 and then proceed at your own risk.
