Versioning - what folder keeps old versions of files?

Hi!
Here's the thing - I have reinstalled the Mountain Lion and used Migration Assistant to restore my user profile from a clone of my previous installation. I got all my personal documents/photos/music/videos back, but lost all versioning info for each document.
I still have the clone of my previous installation on an external drive. I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is a manual way to restore old versions of files.

Hi. Thanks for the answers. I now see why the versions didn't copy together with the user profile - they reside on the root of the drive. D'oh! Wish I knew that before. Maybe then I could have carried that folder over as soon as I was done with the installation. I now have way too many new .pages documents and there is indeed no way I could merge the two DocumentRevisions-V100 folders at this point. Hopefully Apple fixes this in the future so that the versioning folder is kept within the user folder so that it can get transfered over with a new installation/machine.

My computer has just prompted me to download the newest version of Itunes and now there doesn't seem to be any option to "add folder" to library, just "add file to library" so have to do one song at a time and is very time consuming!! Help?!

Use CTRL+B to put the top menu bar back on screen. Add File to Library and Add Folder to Library are both under File.

The home folder is where all of your personal files are kept.
Best candidates to delete are movies, videos, music and photos since they generally take the most space.
Don't forget to empry the Trash after you delete the file because the space is not returned until the Trash is emptied.

"Using cached version of" file

I'm using RH7.003.01 on WinXP SP3 accessing a shared project via Visual SourceSafe (VSS) 6.0. I recently added a number of images to a topic and checked all of these files in. Now everytime I do a Check In All, regardless of which topics are open (i.e., the topic with the new images is not checked out) I see a message in the status bar that RH is "Using cached version of "file://<path/filename>", where filename appears to be the name of each image I recently uploaded (see attachment below). It's annoying because no matter what I'm doing, if I do a Check In All, RH has to pause and then process each of these files. All of these files do appear in VSS, so they are checked in, and when other writers access this shared project they do see the recently added images in the topic, so it doesn't appear that these files are local to my system. Any help is apppreciated.

well, you aren't going to want to hear this, but you need to understand and accept that RoboHelp is not designed for use over a network. Both the application and your projects must be used locally. Sure, you may get away with using a remote server for your project files, maybe for a while. But it doesn't take much to upset the apple cart. RoboHelp projects are supported by a Microsoft Access database (project.cpd) which gets very cranky when a project is accessed and updated remotely.
You can store a project on a server, but you must copy the project to your hard drive and use it there to make changes successfully.
To resolve your issues, I would copy the project to your local drive, MAKE A BACKUP, then delete the <project>.cpd file in the project root folder. Then open the project - RH will rebuild the file and reset its contents to the current condition of the project. This database is sort of like a traffic cop - it keeps track of links between project components and updates itself as you move items around, add new topics, add images, etc.
You may have to re-add missing images / topics, or rebuild broken links.

Service to checkin file if it does not exist, else version the file

From java layer I use WEBDAV and use PUT command and this command creates a new file if it does not exist, and if the file exists it versions the existing file.
I have developed a java component to unzip a folder and checkin all individual files and folders into UCM whenever a zip file is checked in.I would like similar feature in my UCM component.i.e whenever files are unzipped they should always be versioned if they exist.I use the below code,but it always creates a new file(even if file with same name exists in the same folder)

So, I would like to know, if there is a service to achieve the same or is there a parameter I can add in m_binder.putLocal to achieve the same? OR am I suppose to query the UCM Database to check for existence of the file and if it exists I need to manually check out and check it in?

So I queried db to retrieve the ddocName and if no rows are returned my code checks in new file. But if rows are returned I checkout the file using CHECKOUT_BY_NAME and then checkin using CHECKIN_UNIVERSAL using same ddocName.
Creating/checking in new file is successful.
For existing files the checkout is successful.I also confirmed the file is checked out by querying documenthistory and ensuring a new row is created with dction = 'Check out'
But post checkout when i try to re-check using CHECKIN_UNIVERSAL command, I receive the below exception

FF 34 - Restoring Sessions from old folders of files recovery.bak and recovery.js that are not in the original folder. Is this possible?

After crash all the recovery files were gone. With a recovery software I could get old versions of recovery files (recovery.bak, recovery.js). I try to implement them in the new profile folder by exchanging the files, but FF34 just ioverwrites them. Unfortunalty I could not restore the old sessionstore.js file.
Any idea how I can restore the ols session with this 2 old files (recovery.bak, recovery.js)?

Did you check in a text editor that the recovered files are not corrupted and only contain ASCII text?
You would have to copy such a recovery file to the main profile folder as sessionstore.js to replace the current copy.
If you do not use "Show my windows and tabs from last time" then you need to use "History > Restore Previous Session" and possibly "History > Recently Closed Tabs/Windows".

Empty "Recovered Files" folder keeps reappearing in my Trash

An empty "Recovered Files" folder keeps reappearing in my Trash each time I boot my iMac.
Is there any way to prevent this empty folder from constantly reappearing?

I think this issue started in Tiger, however there was some freeware that would automatically empty the Trash on start up. I downloaded that software and it worked. It was called "RecoverTrasher". It worked with Snow Leopard, at least until last week when I had to delete my entire preferences file due to an unrelated issue. Now it no longer works on my iMac.
There is still a link to RecoverTrasher at http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/RecoverTrasher-Download-9415.html/, however, I don't know if it works with 10.6.4. This version is 1.4, and it still references "Tiger", but I downloaded it and put it into my log-in items, shut down and then restated. The icon for it briefly appeared in the dock, and the trash is empty, so it appears to have worked at least this first time with Snow Leopard.
I don't have any relationship with the author of the software, and don't make any representations about the software.

Home Sharing caused duplicates but not all songs or apps transfered. It is a large library! I've tried just setting the path in the Advanced Tab of iTunes preferences of the new computer with the external drive connected the same as the path when the external drive is connected to the old computer. This was the best solution so far but still a few artists missing and some apps. Any suggestions?

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
With iTunes 11 you might also have a Home Videos folder inside iTunes Media.
In the simplest cases you copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target machine, install iTunes, and it "just works"TM.
If the media folder (inside the red outline) has been split out to a separate location then you can copy the library folder (outside the red outline) as before and connect the drive holding the media so that it has exactly the same path as before. If the drive appears as D: on one system and E: on the other then the library won't be able to find the media.
The crucial file is iTunes Library.itl - this contains a record of the tracks that have been added to the library, ratings, play counts, playlists etc.

"Plug-ins not currently available" keeps popping up. Cannot edit old or new files.

I just downloaded Illustrator CC a few days ago off of the creative cloud for my Mac OS X. I was able to work on projects and everything just fine. Today I tried opening the projects I had been working on, but what came up on all the files when I tried opening them was a window saying “The document ‘name of document.ai’ contains elements that are managed by plug-ins that are not currently available. You can delete or expand these elements but you cannot manipulate them in other ways. The miss plug-ins are listed below.” and there would be different plug-ins listed depending on what project it was. It would not let me edit anything on the AI files.
I tried restarting my computer but than for a while was not able to open AI at all and a window “Missing Required Plug-ins: PDF Format.aip” popped up and shut AI down every time. I looked up some troubleshooting online and found some advice for putting foreign plug-ins in a separate file and restarting AI holding “command, option, shift”. I did that and was able to open AI again, but the same problem and window as the first time came up.
I tried starting a new file, but the same message would pop up with and it called my new file “print.ai” even though I clearly didn’t make and name a file yet. I even tried creating a new file from template and using a stock template like “CD cover”… it opened up and I could move the shapes around, but still no creative tool bar. I can’t even get into AI preferences. Any help troubleshoot would be much appreciated.

The missing required plugin pdfformat.aip issue was there in some user machine on 17.1 update and the solution available unfortunately is to uninstall Ai and reinstall.
On what version of Ai are you facing this issue.

I have updated my application policy with a new version ipa file,
While applying the policies to device, there is no message shown for the updates in afaria application.
on taking the iOS build the build number is incremented to next version.
could anyone help highlight on what could be the issue?

Well, first of all, I'm on OS X, not XP, so the control panel doesn't help me :\
as for the automatic update, I like it for all the security updates etc. etc. that come down the pipeline that I don't read about.

Ical alarm keeps trying to open file from old location

I have an iCal alarm to open an accounts file each day.
I moved the file to another folder,
and selected the new location iniCal.
It always gives me this:
Could not open file because 'Old/Path/to/File' could not be found.
When I look at the alarm section in the iCal event, there is a list of files.
When I choose the file (with the same file name) in the NEW folder, this list of files doesnt seem to update.
Is there of forcing iCal to open my new file path?
or a way of taking the OLD file out of this list?

I just found how to removed the old files from my list
in the terminal I type:
open library/preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
and then delete the entries under PersistentMenu
Would still love to hear a more user friendly way to do this.
And a way to just get iCal to open the new file path, or how best to report this bug to apple

The files in download folder keeps adding _b to the file name

I have a strange problem when downloading files on my Macbook Pro(running Mavericks). The name of the files being downloaded or already downloaded to the Download folder keep growing like this:
Say for a file called My_file_name.zip, the system keeps adding _b to the name, it becomes
My_file_name_b_b_b_b...._b.zip.
And for big files, frequently I get the error message saying the file could not be downloaded due because there is no enough disk space. However the file is infact downloaded. I just need to highlight the .download and select Show Package Content, and copy the real file out of it. Howerer this is very annoying.
This problems seems only happens when download files to the default Downoad folder. When downloading to other user selected folders, everything works fine, Please help if you know how to fix this issue.
