Versions and Masters, size and trying to save space

I am looking at my Library and trying to get rid of duplicates - In a List view I see an image and then its Version2. The image master is 9.58 mb; the version is also. I thought versions were supposed to be just the tweaks of the masters and not themselves all that large? I'd like to delete the original and keep the version but know I can't do thatt; if you delete a Master it deletes a version so you can't convert the Version into a new Master
BUT - would this work - export the Versions - delete the Masters - reimport the Versions which then become Masters?
Of course the other option is to offload them all anyway but before going that route, I'm trying to come up with another idea. Or a better idea.

You can turn off auto preview generation for new projects, you can turn off "maintain previews" for existing or old projects, you can delete all of the previews and then just generate them for your rated images.
You can also take a some of your images either by project or by any other criteria and then use move masters to an external drive.

It's a Finder feature, related to Quick Look. You can hit the space bar in the file list to get a preview.
If that doesn't work, you may have an issue witha  preference file or similar. I find rebuilding the launch databse works quite well resilving tis kind of thing, as does trashing Finder preferences

  • Tried to save space old libraries and Trashing

Hi everyone. I have the latest vers. of Itunes and just got a Tera byte I thought it'd be better to save space and put all my "itunes" folders on my Tera. I realized that was wrong and now I have a folder with all types of old Itunes libraries some from years ago and Itunes folders. Does anyone know the layout of what it should be clean? i.e. hardrive/music/itunes/itunesmusic ? I want to trash what I don't need. Also when I download an album I tend to trash the album thinkink it would be ok because I've already imported it into itunes. well now Itunes can't find alot of my songs. Do I really need to keep a copy of every cd I have on my drive for itunes? and if so where should they be kept? last one I promise..... can I combine all these old libraries I have?

    Thanks Donald!
Bit ? Remins. My workflow is; Import fr.o.m. Camera to iphoto. Delete bad photos. I nerver Edit in iphoto. Move the best by drag and drop to Aperture in the dock, and do all editing there. Then printing (Epson 2880). Intill now Only jpeg.
But now i want to insreas quality and start working raw. So import raw and jpeg to iphoto. Drag end drop good raws to Aperture. Are the originals in Aperture libraries then,so i can delete it in iphoto libraries, or beter keep it there Also?
What to chose in iphoto preferences; use raw for extern editing? Keep Edith pictures in 16 bit tiff???
And another question. Wien in jpeg, is shoot With My 16 mp camera. Filés are according to iphoto info Around 5mp.
When i export to desktop as "jpeg original size" filés are much Bigger,Around 15 mp.does that mean that the original filé in iphoto is that big and that the fileinfo in iphoto Only showa à preview or à trumbnail??
Apologien My spelling, but My iPad has à verk strong Will, and prefere to "do it My Way".

  • Firefox won't print from websites and tries to save files instead

When I try to print (print an email, print a receipt from an online purchase, etc.) firefox instead opens the "save as" box and wants to save a .xps file. When I then click either save or cancel, I get an error message stating than an unknown error occurred when trying to print.
I am able to print the same items out of internet explorer, so the problem seems to be tied to firefox and not to, say, my printer.

It wasn't! Don't have any idea how that got changed, but changing it back fixes the problem. Thanks so much for the help!

  • Adobe DC trial version has frozen/hung whilst trying to save document after editing

I have just installed trial version and Adobe DC has frozen and I can't do anything to the screen. If I try to reboot my machine it tells me that I will lose all my work. Any help please?

    Hi Kate ,
You might want to uninstall and re install Acrobat DC trail pack .
See if that fixes the issue .
You might want to refer the following link and see if it helps you .Though ,this link is for prior Acrobat versions but you can follow the steps mentioned in the document and check if they of any help or not .

  • Firefox constantly freezes on my Mac, although I've installed the latest version and tried all suggested fixes - without success.

I used Firefox up to version 3.5 and it worked well. But ever since, FF has frozen as soon as I've opened a webpage other than Google. FF even freezes when I'm in Mozilla's help pages !
I have trashed and reinstalled several times, updated constantly as suggested. I'm now using (or trying to use) version 25. No success.
I have done everything that was suggested :
    - trashed and reinstalled ( several times over the years, to see if new versions of FF would work)
    - restarted FF in safe mode
    - tweaked the profile as recommended
    - I've painstakingly checked that all my plug-ins etc were up to date. They are.
None of these solutions have worked. As I have written more than once, none of them should be necessary : Firefox should "just work". After all, other browsers do - I use Safari and Chrome, for instance, as well as SeaMonkey. Does any
    one know what's happening ?
I'm now running Mac OS 10.9.

A moderator (AliceWyman, whom I thank for her post) suggests I reset Firefox. I've done that, more than once.
The problem remains. And so does my question : why does Firefox keep on hanging/freezing ?
Why should fixes be necessary? Mozilla, in its Firefox page, generously offers the browser free, and users assume that it will, simply, work. In my case, it doesn't.
And as I've said: I've tried a whole range of fixes and workarounds (that aren't necessary with other browsers) and they haven't worked. If my iMac can handle all the other browsers with no problem, this indicates that the computer works, and that the other browsers do too. So this problem seems to be a specific Firefox one.
As I've already said, I could just give up and use Safari, Chrome, Chromium, SeaMonkey, Maxthon, or Slimboat, for instance.
But it irks me that FF, with such a good reputation (it's the third most widely used browser), should behave in this way.
"Different by design", says its webpage. Well, it's certainly different. Can anyone help? I've been asking these questions, trying "fixes", trashing and clean-reinstalling for about a week now.

  • I just downloaded the 6.02 version and clicked on "save the file" in the box that popped up. Was this correct?

Usually there's a "run" option for a new file. I didn't see one and wonder if the new version will now run on my computer, or if I've just saved it to my save files. I'm a real novice at this.

It is in your save files. Double click it to install it.
    thank you

  • TUTORIAL: Disable Auto Save, Versions and bring back Save As

    1. Quit the app(s) you want to configure.
    2. Launch Terminal.
    3. Paste the command below in the Terminal window, then replace 'name of app' with the name of whatever app you want to configure (e.g. 'textedit'), before hitting Enter:
defaults write -app 'name of app' ApplePersistence -bool no
Alternatively, you can configure all apps at once with the following command:
defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no
I don't recommend doing this, though, because, for some reason, it slows down the login process considerably.
For TextEdit only, you also need to run another command, as a workaround for errors that prevents it from functioning correctly:
defaults write -app textedit AutosavingDelay -int 0
    4. Relaunch the app(s).
    5. Enjoy you considerably less infuriating Mac!
If you don't see any changes, a relogin will in most cases do the trick (if not, the app probably uses a non-standard saving mechanism).
Please note: Although this brings back Save As in most apps, this is sadly not the case with Preview and iWork.
To undo any of the above commands, run:
defaults delete -app 'name of app' ApplePersistence
    defaults delete -g ApplePersistence
    defaults delete -app textedit AutosavingDelay
P.S. If you want to remove data already stored by Versions, you need to delete the hidden .DocumentRevisions-V100 folder in the root directory of your disk(s).

    Why?
Because the "Ask to keep changes when closing documents" setting doesn't actually turn off Auto Save and can cause loss of data.
Because the Save As "feature" in Mountain Lion, isn't actually the traditional Save As that OS X had prior to Lion, but a useless, mock version that is likely to cause data loss.
Because Apple still refuses to offer any way of disabling Versions.
    Or, in other words:

  • Updated to the newest version and tried to manage my email the way I always do and LOST ALL my important filed emails. How do I get them back? This will now cost me over $50.00 to lost actions pending.

My "deleted" email is supposed to go into a holding area where I then have a second chance to save or delete for good. I use this method to temporarily save my current files while redirecting the older files to another account, then putting the "deleted" files back into the active account. When I did this the last time all the files were deleted permanently and I want to know why. How do I make sure this won't happen again? Because of this, I now have lost at LEAST $50.00 in pending rebates and over payments that were pending.

I have read a lot of suggestions concerning my problem, the thing is I don't have the option of Re-downloading and in the file menu when I get my library options I don't even have the option of backing up my movie, music, apps, and I don'tt have the Purchased option under my quick links for some unknown reason. Open itunes store  Click "Purchased" under "Quick Links", simply does not work for me. I certainly would like to contact itunes support who would kindly granted me a one time re-download of my purchased music. But then don't answer my cry for help, so again I am stuck with nothing after I bought over 1000.00 dollars worth of movies, music, apps and I don' t have acces to any of it. Thank you Apple for making me feel like a valued customer,
Thank you all for your help but it just doesn't work 4 m2.

  • Seeking a way to shut mac down after backup -- and trying to save power!

This might take a while, but please bear with me...
I have a network of approx 10 macs which are backed up by EMC Retrospect. Under previous versions of retrospect which ran under system 9 and earlier, you could shut a mac down, it would go to sleep, then when the backup was finished it would sut the mac down. This no longer works on OS10.x so we have to leave all the macs on all night to ensure the backup is completed which is a terrible waste of power. So, my question is, is there some way -- a script perhaps -- to make a mac shut down after an event (eg. after Retrospect has backed up its contents) to prevent us having to run all the computers all night?
    thanks
    Luke

In Applescript, you can still shut down the computer, so there is no reason Retrospect could not run a script to shut down the Mac after completing. You might want to ask them why they dropped the capability.
You could write an applescript that starts Retrospect, and then periodically checks to see if it is still in the process list. If not, it calls System Events to shut down. You should probably post that question over in the [Applescript|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=724] forum.

  • Question about making a "highlight tape" in FCE & and trying to save HDspac

All, I am transfering all of my old home videos to DVD. As I am doing this I was going to make a "highlight" tape of each one of my kids. I am half way through capturing all the video but I am running out of space on my (2) Hard drives. I noticed If I made a DVD of a few clips and then deleted the captured & rendered files, as well as the "DV" file (to make more room) that my clips in the seperate SEQUENCE do not work. What is the best way I could do this, since I have to go through all the film before I can export my "highlight" sequence? Thanks.
    mc

Personally, I'd buy another hard drive or two. 320GB Lacie d2 Extreme HDs have been going for ~$145 on newegg.com for a few months now. I think you will find editing down your highlights will be much easier if you only have to work in a single FCE project from your original captured clips.
If/when you export a self-contained QT DV movie you get the same quality as the input files (captured clips) - however - if your intent is continued editing with the exported movie, keep in mind that 1) when you export you lose the benefit of the FCE project file and you will have to treat the exported movie as an imported clip in a new FCE project, 2) the movie is flattened in the sense that any effects, filters or adjustments you applied in the FCE project will be permanently embedded in the resulting movie, 3) you expose your video multiple times to the risks attendant with exporting - for example, dropped frames and other possible gremlins and 4) the exported file will itself take up ~13GB per hour of movie.
