Versions of OEL
Dear all,
I'm curious as to what version of OEL I should test with whilst evaluating OEL/OUL. At the moment, we host our databases on top of RHEL 3 and RHEL 4.
What versions of RHEL do OEL 4 and OEL 5 correspond to? Is there a particular reason why we would run OEL 4 when OEL 5 is out now? When will they be desupported?
FYI, we are running Oracle RDBMS 10g.
TIA
Hi, There:
From http://www.oracle.com/support/collateral/enterprise-linux-support-policies.pdf:
Right to Desupport
It may become necessary as a part of Oracle's support lifecycle to desupport certain Enterprise Linux program releases and, therefore, Oracle reserves the right to desupport certain Enterprise Linux program releases. Enterprise Linux program releases that are included in the attached “Lifetime Support Policy: Coverage for Enterprise Linux” (PDF) document are excluded. Desupport information, including desupport dates, and information about migration paths for certain features, is posted on http://linux.oracle.com/desupport.html. Desupport information is subject to change. Oracle will provide updated desupport information on http://linux.oracle.com/desupport.html as necessary.
so please goto
http://linux.oracle.com/desupport.html
to check current desupport plan
in the mean time , there seems no such plan.

Outdated ghostscript in OEL-5.2
I would appreciate if someone could explain why Oracle is late more than 30 days (11-JUN-2008) by updating the ghostscript package (8.5.2-9.1 => 8.5.2-9.3) ???
Actual OEL-5.2 version (outdated):
Feb 28 2008 ghostscript-8.15.2-9.1.el5_1.1.i386 A PostScript(TM) interpreter and renderer.
Feb 28 2008 ghostscript-devel-8.15.2-9.1.el5_1.1.i386 Files for developing applications that use ghostscript.
Feb 28 2008 ghostscript-gtk-8.15.2-9.1.el5_1.1.i386 A GTK-enabled PostScript(TM) interpreter and renderer.
Actual RHEL-5.2 version:
Jun 11 2008 ghostscript-8.15.2-9.3.el5.i386.rpm
Jun 11 2008 ghostscript-devel-8.15.2-9.3.el5.i386.rpm
Jun 11 2008 ghostscript-gtk-8.15.2-9.3.el5.i386.rpmThe actual version in OEL-5.2 is outdated more than 3 months (28-FEB-2008 : 11-JUN-2008).DNS lookup is configured as outlined in the previous reply. But, looking at your /etc/hosts file:
10.103.10.125 ; oen11g.grid.com oen11g I would remove the semicolon.
Btw, the hosts file is also somewhat different in Linux since it puts the name of the server at the same line of localhost.
The Oracle installer expects it there.. e.g.: 127.0.0.1 gird.example.com grid localhost.localdomain localhost
You can use e.g. export ORACLE_HOSTNAME=grid.example.com to work-around the issue. -
Postfix setup for OEL 5.6
All,
I am interested in configuring psotfix + any related stuff needed for allowing my home system (198.162.1.105) to send email (not concerned if it can receive) to my yahoo/gmail accounts. This is because I would like to set up APEX to send emails, although I know that part is a matter for the APEX forum. But, of course, I have searched for documentation; some sound so simplistic, some rather involved, wouldn't surprise me if there are some variant-specific setup tweaks, which is why I ask here.
Where may I find documentation that will help with the right setup for my needs on this version of OEL? Please do not supply the URL to Google, been there. The following works for me for using gmail:
Install the software:
su - root
wget http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-el5.repo \
--output-document=/etc/yum.repos.d/public-yum-el5.repo
yum -y install postfix
chkconfig sendmail --del

echo 'smtp.gmail.com username:password' > /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd

OEL 5.x on brand new Proliant DL-370 G6 hardware?
Has anyone yet installed OEL 5.2 or 5.3 onto HP's new Proliant DL-370 G6 hardware yet?
Specifically I need to know if the HP SmartArray P410 series SAS Raid Controllers, onboard quad gigabit ethernet NICS and the add-in NC370T dual port gigabit ethernet NICs are fully supported.
Also will the 64-bit version of OEL 5.x be able to see and utilize 64GB of RAM in this machine?Has anyone yet installed OEL 5.2 or 5.3 onto HP's new Proliant DL-370 G6 hardware yet?Best check with HP to ensure they will support the hardware with this O/S; they should, but you never know.
Specifically I need to know if the HP SmartArray P410 series SAS Raid Controllers, onboard quad gigabit ethernet NICS and the add-in NC370T dual port gigabit ethernet NICs are fully supported.HP should know. I don't see any trouble reports about this server, however.
Also will the 64-bit version of OEL 5.x be able to see and utilize 64GB of RAM in this machine? No reason to think it won't. See the various options at http://www.redhat.com/rhel/compare/ for more info. -
Oracle E-business Suite release 12.1.1 migration from AIX to OEL on OVM
Hi
We will be migrating our current Oracle E-business suite release 12.1.1 production environment from AIX to OEL using OVM. We are experienced in migrating from one platform to another on single box but this is the first time we will be using OVM.
We will be gratefull if somebody can provide us the right path to migrate to OVM, my understanding is:
1. Setup Hypervisor, install OVM guests OS using OVM templates
2. Install E-business suite environment using OVM templates
3. follow Export / import document to migrate E-business suite environment
need suggestions
Thank You
Shahrukh yasinNo. Do not use the EBS templates.
1. Get OVM up and running.
2. Install OEL guests.
3. Check requirements for running OEL on EBS 12.1. They are different for different version of OEL. There are several oracle support articles detailing the requirement from OEL4 thru OEL6. I personally would use OEL5.
4. Clone your DB and app tops and get them working.
5. When you get ready to cut, refresh your DB. You can use datapump but it will take some time depending on how much data you have. You may want to upgrade your DB. If you're running anything less than 11.2.0.3. If you do, then datapump is the best option. At least in my opinion. There are several issues with running 12.1 and 11.2.0.3. Make sure you address them. There are several support articles detailing them. Oracle 10 database isn't supported on OVM. 10 isn't offically supported at all anymore.
6. Rerun you clone scripts on your app tiers and reconfigure your app layout. -
Upgrade OEL 4.8 to Oracle Linux OL 5.4 on a Live System using Yum
I have a remote server with my oracle 10g databases running on it.
The OS Version is OEL 4 update 8
Need to upgrade it to OEL 5 update 4.
Can I do it through yum.
I need to do it remotely. Please suggest the steps.
Cold backup taken for the database.Upgrading from one major release version to another is not supported and you cannot use yum to perform the task.
http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Installation_Guide/ch-upgrade-x86.html
Oracle Linux is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which does not support in-place upgrades between any major versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. A major version is denoted by a whole number version change. For example, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 are both major versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. In-place upgrades across major releases do not preserve all system settings, services or custom configurations. Consequently, Red Hat strongly recommends fresh installations when upgrading from one major version to another. -
Degrade OEL 5.6 to OEL 5.5
Hi All
Yum install oracle-validated packages upgrade the OEL release from 5.5 to OEL 5.6. How to revert to the previous version from OEL 5.6?That sounds very odd. Are you sure you did not have the OEL 5.5 and 5.6 repository enabled in yum. The later would explain the upgrade.
In order to downgrade you can try to use yum downgrade. Please see man yum for more details. But why would you want to downgrade to 5.5 anyway? -
Problems dual booting Windows Vista with Oracle Enterprise Linux 4
I tried dual booting my sony laptop which came pre installed with windows Vista,After a successful installation, windows Vista boots fine, but Oracle enterprise linux just stops booting at this point " Starting Udev...................................................(OK)
Initializing hardware....Storage network"
It's posibly a hardware compatibility problem but I dont know why I get stuck at this point. Can anyone help please?hi,
r u getting this error while installing oel or after installation?
which version of oel u r installing?
u may get this error probably due to hard disk (usually sata) compatility with linux.

Archive Logs NOT APPLIED but transferred
Hi Gurus,
I have configured Primary & Standby databases in same Oracle Home. OS version is OEL 5. Database version is 10.2.0.1. I could get the archive logs in the standby site but they are not getting applied in the standby database. I don't have OLAP installed in my database version. Would this create this issue? However I attached my primary alert log details below for your reference:

i have install oracle Enterprise Linux on VM Ware.. the os version of OEL is : 2.6.32-200.13.1.el5uek
Now i want to configure ASM Disk but which version of oracleasm install plase any one tell me..and how many patch are required ...i am installaing oracle 10g rac on two virtual Machine of laptop....
Regards
AliYou will need to install the following additional packages: oracleasm-support, oracleasmlib.
(The oracleasm driver is already included in the Oracle UEK kernel.)
If you do not have a subscription and access to Oracle ULN you might want to setup Oracle public yum by following the instructions at http://public-yum.oracle.com.
Then you can install the oracleasm-support package using the following command:
sudo yum install oracleasm-support
To install the oracleasmlib package, check

32 bit O/S vs 64 bit O/S
Hi,
I have some doubts... i want to change my system setup from rhel4 32 bit to rhel5(any 32bit or 64bit) but i am confused shall i go for 62 bit or 32 bit
1)Advantages of using 64 bit(rhel 5) o/s compared to 32 bit(rhel 5 ) o/s for R12.0.4?
2)Can i rapidclone R12.0.4 from 32 bit(rhel 5) to 64 bit(rhel 5) ?
3)can i rapidclone R12.0.4 from rhel4 32 bit to rhel5 32 bit(i know yes but from you people i want to hear for satisfaction)?
4)Is R12.0.4 stable on rhel5 64 bit o/s
Please waitng for a sincere advice and HUSSEIN let me know which environment u will go with if u were in my place?
RegardsHi,
1)Advantages of using 64 bit(rhel 5) o/s compared to 32 bit(rhel 5 ) o/s for R12.0.4?See (Note: 343917.1 - Frequently Asked Questions: Oracle E-Business Suite Support on x86-64) -- What are the benefits of running Oracle E-Business Suite on x86-64?
2)Can i rapidclone R12.0.4 from 32 bit(rhel 5) to 64 bit(rhel 5) ? No.
3)can i rapidclone R12.0.4 from rhel4 32 bit to rhel5 32 bit(i know yes but from you people i want to hear for satisfaction)?Yes.
For Q2 and Q3, please see (Note: 216664.1 - FAQ: Cloning Oracle Applications Release 11i) -- Can I clone from one operating system version to another? Can I clone from one platform to a different platform?
4)Is R12.0.4 stable on rhel5 64 bit o/sOracle Apps R12 is certified on the 64-bit OS version of OEL/RHEL/SUSE for both application and database tiers and there should be no issue.
Please waitng for a sincere advice and HUSSEIN let me know which environment u will go with if u were in my place?I would go with the 64-bit OS as I do not want to end up with limited memory for the application/database tiers (as explained in the answer of Q1 in this thread).

R12.1.3 certification for JDK and other products on Oracle Linux 6
Hello
We are in the process of migrating R12.1.3 from Linux 5.4 (64bit) on physical server to OEL 6.5 (64bit) on Oracle VM.
Currently running IAS 10.1.3.5 , Forms 10.1.2.3, JDK 1.6_10 on HTTP Server Node and 1.4.2_14-b05 on Developer 10g (Forms/Reports). JRE client is 1.6_24.
The future state is R12.1.3 on OEL 6.5 on Oracle VM with JRE 7.
The plan is to use Rapid Clone as we are already on 10.1.3.5 and DB 11.2.0.3.
The uncertainty is with JDK as the certification on MOS for R12.1.3/OEL 6 indicates minimum version of JDK is 1.6_26.
Should I upgrade to JDK 1.6_26 as a minimum, on the apps tier 10.1.3_HOME and 10.1.2_HOME on Linux 5.4 before cloning to OEL 6.5? Or can we continue running the current JDK apps tier versions on OEL 6.5 and only upgrade the client to JRE 7, without updating JDK?
Taking into account the current versions, can I use the pre-build R12.1.3 VM templates on the new hardware and then clone?
Furthermore, I read the following comment on Steven Chan's blog, it was in June 2012, are these products certified now?
"there is still some unsupported products on OEL6*
Oracle Advanced Supply Chain Planning (MSC)
Oracle Inventory Optimization (MSR)
Oracle Constraint Based Optimization (MSO)
Oracle Work In Process (WIP)
Oracle Manufacturing Scheduling (WPS)"
Any suggestions/assistance will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Recent (July 2012) article about Oracle Linux on slashdot
Already a couple of days old, but I had some fun reading and adding in a couple of replies.
http://linux.slashdot.org/story/12/07/27/0236219/cowboyneal-reviews-oracle-linuxMy best guess was that there are a couple of reasons for Oracle Linux:
1) I can imagine that technical aspects resulted in the UEK kernel. The RHEL kernel, at least in RHEL 5 was pretty old, perhaps blocking the development of Oracle's own kernel drivers.
2) Red Hat officially said "Yes, we undercut Oracle with hidden Linux patches", whining that they would steal Red Hat customers. I guess that was a very good reason for Oracle to branch its own kernel.
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2011/03/04/red_hat_twarts_oracle_and_novell_with_change_to_source_code_packaging
Like I mentioned before, Oracle was the reason why I actually got hooked up to Linux again, actually in order to install Oracle 11g to study for OCP. RHEL was one of the more visible choices, but you cannot register with e.g. gmail, to be able to download RHEL for evaluation.
I checked the timeline of OEL and Solaris. The first version of OEL according to wikipedia dates to May 2007. The acquisition of Sun by Oracle was completed beginning of 2010. So I guess Solaris had bad luck since OEL was already doing the job for the Intel market. In some way I think it is a pitty, because Solaris has a nice user interface and special features, but development on Oracle Linux has continued, e.g. BtrFS, Dtrace.
I think it might take some more time before vendor certification for Oracle Linux (UEK) reaches the same level like RHEL, but I'm sure that will happen. Personally I don't give much about vendor certification, but some do. After all, people use applications, not the OS, so Oracle by "nature" rules over Red Hat, which is just an OS. -
I am a newbie to Oracle. I am having a question regarding user managed hot backup. My oracle version is 11.2.0.2 and OS version is OEL.
What will happen, if we perform User Managed Hot Backup without setting tablespaces in BEGIN BACKUP mode?aee649c3-9d9a-40a3-bd64-460990851489 wrote:

The bigger question is why you would do a user managed backup in the first place. User managed backup means user managed recovery. The oracle supplied utility for database backup is 'rman', and the 'r' stand for 'recovery' -- as in "Recovery Manager". Not using rman to do your backups is akin to not using the spare tire, jack, and lug wrench that came with your car to fix a flat tire.

BTW, it would be really helpful if you would go to your profile and give yourself a recognizable name. It doesn't have to be your real name, just something that looks like a real name. Who says my name is really Ed Stevens? But at least when people see that on a message they have a known identity. Unlike the system generated name of 'ed0f625b-6857-4956-9b66-da280b7cf3a2', which is like going to the pub with a bag over your head.
