Vertical bands on my 17" LCD

Something very odd happened to my 17" LCD this morning. Instead of the usual picture-perfect clarity, I have vertical bands or stripes across the screen. They vary in color from white to grey to blue to black and vary in width. There is no hint of what should actually be displayed on the screen (i.e., the login window for my G4 cube). Also, the outside 1 or 2 inches of the screen is black, as if the screen has a cataract that has blurred the peripheral part of the screen. I've tried rebooting, but no luck. I connected the G4 cube to a different screen and it's working fine, so it's definitely the monitor at fault. This monitor has been connected to this same G4 cube for about 5 years without issue. Has it just reached its lifetime limit? Any suggestions for a potential fix will be most appreciated.

A second purple line appeared along side the blue/green one. These discussions show a problem exists with these lines on their displays, and although they made no acknowledgement of this, The Apple Store replaced the LCD in record time, although I was told at first I would have to wait a month for a new LCD. A new logic board was tried first but did fix the LCD, adding two hundred megabytes of data to my hard drive for diagnostics. I recloned my hard drive to clean it out. Without Apple Care (I'm half way through the three years) this would have cost $700 or more.

  • T410s vertical band in my LCD

I have had my t410s for a couple of months, yesterday a vertical band appeared in my display.  A quick search online brought up this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM9_ZM_8qkQ
which is exactly what I see.
I am about to lose my t410s for a couple of weeks (or so I am told by the Lenovo support rep), is this a problem that Lenovo is able to reliably fix?  (namely it is clearly endemic to the t410s as I have seen many posts on the matter, my concern is that their fix is just temporary until it happens again)
Do others who see this problem find that the repair sticks?
btw, I have to say that the Lenovo return mechanism which required me to talk to someone I could barely understand did not help.    I used to love the Thinkpad line for its robust design (and had many), the T410s, which was not inexpensive, felt flimsy in comparison and having the screen die in such a short time is disconcerting (and seeing how many people are dealing with the same thing is a further concern).
    Solved!

For the record: Technician came and replaced the LCD. Took maybe 10 minutes. Works perfectly now :-)
I asked him if he noticed anything about T410s displays failing and he was not aware of any issue with that particular model.

  • Macbook display issue - vertical band

The LCD display on my daughter's Macbook got fried because she dumped a drink on it - yes, it was alcoholic. She had some else's fried MacBook laying around so I harvested the LCD display from it and put it in her Macbook. The swap went just fine.
I booted her machine and found a vertical stripe on the right 1" of the display.
You can see the stripe in the photos here:
    http://gallery.me.com/carlfino#100011
I checked the connection from the video cable to the lcd display and all was well. I know it's not the connection from the motherboard to the video cable because this stripe did not exist on the previous display and I didn't affect this connection when I swapped the lcd display.
I have no history on the display that I placed in the unit, so I guess it's possible that this stripe was a problem embedded in that display. But, if any of you have suggestions on what could cause this I'd like to hear them.
    Regards,
    Carl...

I have not tried an external display. The only time it is not there is on bootup, when the grey screen shows. As soon as any colored desktop image shows up the band is there. I also removed the video display cable from the back of the display while the machine was running. As soon as I removed the video cable, the screen went grey, and the band was not there. When I plugged the video cable back in, the stripe returned. Clearly, it's a video problem - the question is whether the problem is rooted in the motherboard or on the lcd display side. I suspect the lcd display, because even though the previous display had liquid damage, I could see the entire display and the vertical band was not present.

  • Wide black vertical band in display.

My computer (MA590LL-late 2006) has just started displaying a 2.5" wide sold black vertical band just left of center. Otherwise it seems to be working just fine. I want to find out if this is an expensive repair before I take it to Apple because, given it's age, it may not be worth fixing. I found one similar problem within these "Discussions" pages but there was no answer. Can anyone help?

If your waranty's up in 6 days, I'd ship that thing off first thing tomorrow by whatever method it takes. On the old Titanium PowerBooks (and actually on some of the Aluminums) that line meant a pinched display cable or something in the display itself failing. Whatever it is, it's not going to just go away, in fact it will probably just get worse until you have to pay to either replace the display (very expensive) or get it rewired (rather expensive.) I'm certainly no Apple tech, but a line problem like that is usually a display issue needing attention before it becomes worse. Even though you'll be without your computer for a while and it sounds like it'll be a pain to ship it and get it back, I'd still give it a try.

  • 30" Problems Inverted video and vertical banding

I've had the 30" since May and have been having intermittent problems that occur once every few weeks. The problems only seem to occur following sleep (the computer's not mine . The problem for the first few times was that the display was inverted (dark to bright and visa versa) and colors were totally washed out. Examples of these problems may be found:

    http://greg.sytes.net:5080/WhiteInverseCrop.jpg
    http://greg.sytes.net:5080/WhiteInverseCNN.jpg
For the first time, this morning a new problem occured following display sleep. This time the display wasn't inverted but there were vertical bands of dark stripes with various colors. Here's a snap:
    http://greg.sytes.net:5080/VerticalColorStripes.jpg
Spent 30 minutes explaining the problems to an Apple Care rep who did nothing but pass me off to another rep. The second representative took another 30 minutes and opened a trouble ticket but said I had to make an appointment to see a genius at the local Apple store. It's hard to believe that an appointment cannot be made for the weekend. I spent over $200 on the Apple Care agreement and I'm going to have to take time off from work to get this problem fixed! Sorry for the venting.
Has anyone else heard of problems like those described above?
Any isnights would be greatly appreciated!
    Best Regards,
    Greg

    Hi Lin-Chow,
I'm glad I'm not the only one with this type of problem. Have you explored getting Apple to take a look at the bad unit? It's a problem that can be lived with but I'm afraid it could become less tolerable if the frequency or time to return to normal increase.
I still haven't made the appointment with a genius. I guess I just supect that the unit would be shipped back to apple and they would find all is well (unless they keep it for a month).
    Regards,
    Greg

  • 30" vertical banding issue (thick grey overlay)

I have a 2 year old 30" display which has recently begun having some issues. The problem has only happened twice so far, once 1-2 months ago, and the again a couple days ago. What happens is randomly the screen will get light/dark vertical bands of various thicknesses and intensities. It will stay like this regardless of restarts, leaving the computer and display off for 6+ hours, unplugging and replugging all cords, changing resolutions, plugging the display into other computers/laptops, etc.... for about two days. Then it will "fix" itself.
    See pictures here:
    http://web.mac.com/modoc1/iWeb/Site/30%20Inch.html
I have AppleCare and called support about this issue just now. They won't give me a repair ticket or replacement unless it happens again, in which case I'm supposed to call again, and they'll let me ship it in for repairs. My frustration is that it's happened twice, I'm sure it'll happen again, however if I can get it taken care of now, while I"m between photography projects, then it's a minimal impact, however, if I wait, and it does this again while I'm under a deadline working on a photo shoot, then I'm screwed. I explained this to the support rep to no avail.
I'm going to try bringing it to my local genius bar tomorrow and show them the pictures, since now the display looks normal, and see if they can help me any.
I guess i have two questions:
    1) has anyone seen this before? I see many posts about thin colored vertical lines, but I haven't seen this issue before.
    2) any suggestions on how I can handle getting a repair or replacement taken care of?
    Thanks!

    Hi:
Is the lines coming up when you connect the laptop to an external monitor?
What happens when you use the laptop - on AC adapter plugged in alone battery removed & in battery alone with AC power plugged off?
Did you get a hard reset and check again:
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768
Did you try changing the power source to another outlet and check again?
Yes you should definitely back up your data in to an external hard drive.
Create a set of Recovery USB and keep it safe:

" How long will it be fixed? ": depends on what the exact problem is.

  • Vertical banding in gradient

The printer is telling me there are vertical bands in the gradient on this brochure. I exported the document to a PDF-High Quality (modified) preset;Standard: None;Compatibility: Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4) (printer's specs).
    The color settings:
    North America Prepress2;
Working Spaces: R=Adobe RGB, K=US Web Coated      (SWOP) v2 with Policies set to: R=Preserve Embedded Profiles; K=Preserve      Numbers (Ignore Linked Profiles).
The Transparency Blend Space is      RBG.
The color I used to make the gradient has 17% transparency.
HELP! How to get rid of this??
    I'm working in InDesign CS4.
    Thanks!
    Kimberlee

Unless you're printing hundreds, it will be digital. The cost of making plates for color work is high when you go on a press, so you need a lot of copies before that gets absorbed into the per unit cost of the finished product and can compete with the click charges for running the laser printer, which needs no plates and has practically no setup time for each job.
For a job run on my favorite printer's press I usually figure the minimum charge is $1500 (and that would cover any number of impressions up to around 500 copies). As the number of copies increases, the cost for paper, ink, and press time go up, but the very heavy cost of the plates and job setup gets sliced into smaller and smaller chunks until eventually you are paying only pennies per unit (or fractions of a penny). On the other hand, the color copier has a constant cost per page that is I think around $.25 each, whether you print one or one thousand. The setup cost is minimal (I don't know what my guy charges, but where I used to work, we charged $15 per file, and I think that is considered high these days, but it depends a lot on how hard they work on getting the color right).
I just got a quote this afternoon to print 2000 booklets in two colors, 16 pages plus cover, finished size 5.5 x 8.5 after folding and stapling. This is a perfect configuration for the laser printer which can do the finishing inline and spit out a finished booklet that needs no additional handling. It will cost about $3200.00 to run on the press, then trim, fold and stitch, but running it on the copier would be $6000.00. If I add another thousand coppies to the press run it will add perhaps another hundred or two hundred dollars, adding them to the copier run would probably add $2000.00 to $2500.00. On the other hand, if I only needed 50 copies, the digital print price would allow me to consider color where I never would have been able to do it ten years ago.

  • Key out vertical banding?

I just shot some phantom footage and the sensor was messed up in the field. There wasn't any way to reset the camera in the field without risking camera failure so I just had to go with having messed up footage over no footage at all. My question is, is there any way to "key" out these vertical banding lines in premiere/after effects to just essentially mask them out of the image? Thanks in advance

  • Strange vertical bands on Starz HD

I'm seeing distorted vertical bands on the Starz HD channel, and it appears on all of the televisions in my household. Is it a problem with my ONT or a network issue?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This sounds like it could be a hardware problem either with the display or possibly the graphics chip. Since you are under Apple's 1 year warranty, the best thing to do would be to contact Apple and see what they recommend you do to have it repaired. I don't know what the resources might be in Kenya, but if you bought it locally, perhaps the store where you bought it could be of help.

  • Vertical Banding

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences with books printed from Aperture. I bought a 100 page book which was £85/€125, certainly not cheap, as a christmas present for relatives. On nearly every page if not every page there's vertical banding, some worse then others.
Where does Apple stand in regards to customer satisfaction on this because I'm pretty gutted, not just because of the cost but I'm going to be giving out a sub par present.
Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I've had similar problems too with printing from Apple/Kodak. I have read that Kodak does not do four pass printing, which in turn causes the cheaper look and feel alongside color banding.
The strange thing is that I ordered a book and 8x10 prints of the same pictures and the 8x10 pics looked great, but the book and a lot of graininess etc. I too was disapointed but not completly unhappy.
I talked to a fellow photographer who is a proffesional and he uses the company called MyPublisher. They have a I-Photo plugin, but no Aperture. I've seen the results first hand and I'll have to admit I was jealous. They do the four pass printing and it is really excellent.
    http://mypublisher.com/iphoto_plugin.php
I know it is too late for Christmas, but you could try mypublisher next time.
I've read on other Aperture disussions that if you complain enough to Apple, they'll ask you to send the PDF of the book and check it with there system. If they find that it is not your fault, they'll return your money or print you a new book.

  • Black & White Vertical Bands on Freeze

For the past few weeks my eMac has been randomly freezing and the display is filled with thick black & white vertical bands/lines. The applications seem to be running in the background when this happens (iTunes was still playing) but I have to hold the power button to shutdown the computer as it won't display anything on screen other than the black & white bands.
Does anyone know what this is/how I can fix it?
    Thanks

The symptoms you describe of one of a set of many which may indicate that your eMac 1 GHz or 1.25 GHz machine uses a logic board on which there are defective capacitors.
To determine if this is the case with your logic board, you may remove the user access place on the underside of your machine and inspect the visible capacitors. Affected boards typically will show evidence of swelling, bloating or leakage of fluid from the capacitors.
While Apple once covered the replacement of such logic boards, the repair extension authorization for this issue expired long ago. You can alternatively have your logic board repaired if it is affected by this defect. Contact me at the electronic mail address listed in my Public Profile if you are affected and want to explore such an alternative.
