Vertical Blue Stripes across Screen

I'm not sure what triggered it, but vertical blue stripes will pop up and freeze my screen. It started last night and have happened a couple of times already. I can only 'unfreeze' it by rebooting the Mac.

Does anyone know what the problem is?
Thanks

I haven't read anything about the ABC website causing problems. Watching videos may be more processor intensive and the machine may run a bit hotter, which might be enough to trigger a video problem that could have been there all along, but just hadn't manifested itself yet.
If you also get the blue stripes on an external display, that would indicate a problem with the graphics chip. If the video on the external display is fine, then the blue stripes could be a problem with your internal display rather than the chip.
If you get the stripes again, it might be a good time to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test, which is on Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that originally came with your computer. The AHT will test a lot of stuff, and if you get an error code, it will indicate a specific hardware problem. You can try Googling the error code and maybe find out what it is, but Apple is the keeper of error codes and would have to be the one to give you a definitive answer.
I can appreciate that you need to work on your paper and won't be able to mess with this right away. If your video goes away entirely, here is an article which might help you get it back again:
Troubleshooting: My computer displays no video
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573?viewlocale=en_US
This article will walk you through some resets which might help.
Also, sometimes problems are worse if the computer gets hot. If that seems to be the case, something like a chill mat might help until you have time for some serious troubleshooting. So would quitting any unnecessary applications while you are working on your paper.
Good luck!

  • Blue Strips on screen?

This is on behalf of a coworker.  He decided to get a SiS648 board (648F Neo-L), which you can find here http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=470
Then he got a XFX Geforce FX5900, which you'll find here
    http://www.xfxforce.com/product_view.php?sku=PVT35KNA
I presume he got ram and processor to fit the board.  Everything is plugged in right. But anyway he says that when he turns the system on all he gets is these blue stripes on the screen, about 10 or so across the screen and they don't move.
Granted I've told him to get an 865PE Neo-PLS or something like that instead of the SiS, I am wondering what would cause it to not work right given everything is seated right and plugged in and all with a 400W power supply.  Is there a 0.8 vs 1.5v AGP voltage problem?

No; there is no problem as far as the AGP Voltage is concerned...The correct AGP setting for your card is 1.55 Volts (even though it is a 8X card) as the further Voltage reduction to 0.8 Volts is done by the electronics on the Vidio Card itself ...........Sean REILLY875

  • Permanent vertical blue line the screen and a red one has just popped up too. What does it mean and how can I get rid of them?

I have had a permanent vertical blue line on the right side of my imac screen for some time now.  It does not affect the use of the computer.  A red one has popped up on the right side of the screen and is not going away either.
Would you know why these are appearing and perhaps how to get rid of them please?
    Thank you in advance

Best guess is that either your GPU or LCD is failing. You should take it to the nearest Apple Store or AASP for proper diagnostic. Once you know what the problem is you can decide wether or not it's worth repairing.

  • Gray stripe across screen

I have an Ipad 3.  I bought this 2-3years ago and this was working great until yesterday.  All of the sudden, I noticed a flickering gray/white strip across the screen.  It did not go away despite turning off the Ipad and restarting and resetting.
Is this a hardware issue and shoudl I take this to my local Apple store or is there something else I can try.
    Thanks.

Sounds like a hardware issue which can not be corrected by anything other than a trip to the store for a replacement.

  • Black spot and white stripe across screen

Okay well it's my brothers ipod, and I have no idea what the heck he did to it. But he left it on his dresser and woke up with the black spot and white stripe across the screen. After reading one of the posts, is it possibily moisture or water? But I have no idea how the black blotch thingy got there. Any ideas on what it is? And how I can fix it?

  • MacBook Pro only boots in safe mode with pink vertical stripes across screen.

So on Friday night I was using Chrome on my MacBook Pro, when all of a sudden little squares of light flashed randomly across the whole screen and everything but the mouse froze. I thought that was weird, so after a few minutes I forced my computer to shutdown. I waited a little and then turned it back on, and opened Chrome again. The same thing happened again, so I forced shut down, backed up Time Machine and ran a virus scan. Nothing came up, so I put it to sleep and and went to bed.  Then Saturday morning I went to open my laptop and it was off, which was weird, so I went to turn it on. After the apple logo and spinning gear went away, it booted to a light blue screen and stayed there. Again I waited and nothing happened, so I held the power button down until it turned off. I tried again but the same thing happened, so I booted in Safe Mode.
This time there were inch long vertical bars of horizontal lines, kind of confusing but here are two pictures I took of the screen that hopefully help. http://imgur.com/oj2WbZL and http://imgur.com/O1hwJ1B . When it finally loaded I had another issue, I had 6 pink vertical bars across the screen and a box of pink horizontal stripes around my pointer, http://imgur.com/BJBzu74 . I performed an extended Apple Hardware Test and after 17 minutes it found no issues, and as it performed the test the lines got whiter and made the screen harder to see http://imgur.com/XahBD3s .
I got my laptop June 2011, so it's not that old. I just want to know what this problem could be. I don't know if it's the connection from the screen to the computer, the hard drive, the logic board or something else. I'm really worried that it's something major, so any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

This is a GPU problem. It's normal that you see that the problem is random, but the fact that your Mac is only starting up in safe mode indicates that your Mac can only start up if the VGA driver is used. Moreover, if you open Console, you should start seeing "GPU Debug Info Start", which indicates a GPU failure.
As you have a backup, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. In the case of the MacBook Pro, the GPU is soldered onto the logic board, so the whole logic board has to be replaced, being a very expensive repair.

  • Thin vertical white lines across screen

I've got what looks like white vertical pinstripes (alternating 1 and then 2 together) across my screen.  What does this indicate?  The stripes are white, and do not show up on a white background.

Make a free appointment at the Apple Genius Bar.

  • Vertical blue stripe

    hello,
since about a month, I have a continuous thin blue vertical stripe over the left side of my computer screen, after a week it was joined by a red one on the right side of the screen.
I wonder if this means the beginning of the end = I should look into buying another. Or would it resolve itself if I upgrade to 10.6, which is what I would like to do?
This one's is 10.5, macbook pro bought in oct. 2008.
I performed the apple hardware test, the simple and the extended ones, but that said there was no trouble found.
I can't find any info about this on the web, am I really the first one with this problem?
It woudl be great if one of you can help.
    thanks a lot in advance.

It sounds like it could be a problem with the internal display. Since you are under warranty, you might call Apple or take it by an Apple Store if you have access to one. It could be a hardware problem.
    Good luck!

  • 2 Vertical Black Bars Across Screen...

Anyone know about or experienced vertical black bars (2) across the monitor after returning from sleep or standby mode?
I'm just worried my computer will crap out on me when it's most inconvenient so I'm trying to guage what computer problems/elderly computer symptoms I'll be dealing with in it's decline. It's only from 2009, but it's heavily used and has lots of graphic design and media software on it.
Note: The SD card recently stopped working, and the Genius bar determined it was a mechanical failure. Also, the CD burn hasn't been working for a while.
Using a Macbook pro os x, leopard, purchased 2009.

It only happens for a split second, and before/while the computer is waking up so when I try to take a screen shot, it doesn't work because it's not fully on yet. However, I will take a pic with some other device so I do have a picture of it. And I FOR SURE have all my data backed up plus on a flash.
    Thanks for the advice.

  • Vertical blue segments on screen

For the past 2 weeks I've noticed that two vertical blocks would come and go on my screen. After discussions with apple help line and a trip to the apple store I figured out that the power strip with 2 power bricks for the modem and wireless which were sitting behind the screen were causing the anomaly. Thought I had a bad screen. Just keep the power bricks at least 3 feet away.

  • Vertical barcode stripes on screen

Hi - this is my first ever Apple anything (Imac 27 inch) and I'm only three days in. I'm a bit worried about what happens when I click on pages within 'top sites' however, two of them show a beige background with blue and black barcode stripes running down the centre for about 3-4 seconds before the page opens and the rest open instantly but appear 'greyed out' for for the same period of time. Is this normal? could it be a fault which is going to get worse? Or could It just be something to do with the pages that 'top sites' is linking to - the pages do then open normally and there are no other problems with this otherwise WONDERFUL machine... would be grateful for any advice - thanks!

Hello alfiebanana & welcome to the forums
Get on the phone w/Apple first thing....or if you picked it up in a retail Apple Store, call for an appointment and make it their problem.
    Good luck in any case.

  • Permanent vertical blue line on screen

The line appears on the left had side of my Thinkpad Yoga, which was purchased about two months ago. I saw some similar posts here. So this is likely LCD panel issue and have to send back for repair?

it is a hardware issue with lcd cable or panel, you have to send it into repair.

Spoke to a Mac advisor last night for setup and thought everything was ok.  Won't copy emails and there is no large box that comes up to show what you are printing or how many copies you want.

  • There are horizontal white lines through display picture, and some vertical blue lines. sometimes screen is all black, sometimes whited out, sometimes half white lines, half completely unvisible. white lines have spread from just a few on top

i just want to know if anyone has encountered this problem and if it is worth getting fixed/looked at. its an older nano so im thinking about just buying an itouch. any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Problems like this can be caused by a cable pinched in the hinge. When you start seeing the display problems, does adjusting the angle of the display make a difference?
There is a known logic board fault in this model iBook which resulted in the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program. However, in my experience, if the logic board is involved with display anomalies, it causes the system to freeze up, necessitating a hard shutdown and waiting several hours for a restart. Another symptom of the logic board problem is if pressure on the case to the left of the trackpad on the left wrist rest improves the situation.
Based on my experience, it sounds more like a cable caught in the hinge, since you're not seeing system freezes. Let us know if adjusting the display's angle (a bit forward or a bit back) makes a difference.

  • Moving blue bar across screen

When I open different programs, this line comes up. Once I exit out of the program it goes away. But will stay up the whole time I have the program open. it moves back and forth like a scanner. Just started a couple days ago. Have had the ipad for 3 months.
