Vertical green dots/lines

One of our 17" iMacs has started to display random greenish vertical lines made up of a series of pixel sized dots. I've reset NVRAM/PRAM without any change. The lines/dots appear on the login screen and continue for any login.
If I Safe Boot the dots disappear, so I think it must be software rather than hardware related. There are no external Firewire or USB devices connected (other than the keyboard and mouse).
Any ideas what might be causing this and how to fix it?
Thank you.

A good way to test this theory is to clone backup your data as my FAQ* explains:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
And then erase and install the operating sytem.
If the issue persists with an erase and install, you have a hardware issue.
If the issue does not persist with an erase and install then your software data file had become corrupted.

My 06' Macbook Pro crashed with vertical, green pixelated lines and now will not advance past the turn-on screen with the apple filled with green lines as well. Then, it says to hold down the power button to restart. I have tried several times to get it past this point but tnothing helped.
I have an appointment at the Apple store today, but was wondering : will all of the information and files on my desktop be lost? Or is this a logic board problem?
Any help is much MUCH appricated.

I'm not sure, if you're out of warrenty it'll cost quite a bit for the replacement of the logic board replacement...unless you have apple care. you could ask apple to try and recover your hard drive but i'm not sure.

  • Green dotted line instead of solid???

What does a Green dotted line instead of solid line mean on the wireless map???

Well the Green dotted line shows that you have functional wireless connectivity with the computer, however not all wireless devices are displayed with the dotted green line.
But basically the solid green line shows for the functional wired connection.

  • Vertical green lines while watching DVD on M40-148

When I try to watch video or DVD on my new laptop there is several vertical green dotted lines across the screen.
Why is that? And how do I get rid of them?

    Hello guys
It is very strange issue. A friend of mine has also M40 and I have tested playing DVD films and everything works fine. It is very strange that you see those lines just while DVD player runs. Something like that should not happen.
In my opinion you should reinstall the unit with recovery DVD and dont make any installation. Immediately after operating system installation try to watch DVD using preinstalled DVD player. If the problem persist contact service partner and let them check the unit. The unit is pretty new and warranty is still valid.
As far as I know the recovery image is tested and something like that should not happen.
    Good luck!

  • My 27" iMac displays vertical green lines when turned on and then will not boot up

Can anyone tell me why my 27" iMac displays vertical green lines when it is turned on and then will not boot up?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The display or graphic card are damaged. The only thing you can do is to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get your computer repaired.
If you use an external display with your Mac, connect it to your computer and see if these lines appear on the external display. If so, it's a graphic card problem

  • Photo Booth Effects have vertical green lines

  • I don't have any icons in facebook anymore, faces or message notices or green dot letting me know who is and isn;t on line

I noticed last week that when I was in facebook from Mozilla/Firefox I had no green dots showing in the chat list. These green dots let me know who is and who isn't on line. The message board, friend reqests do not show. I used to have icons on that. And if I:m in chat and I add a happy face they no longer show.

It is possible that you clicked "Block Images" in the right click context menu while trying to save an image.
See [[Options window - Content panel]]
*A way to see which images are blocked is to click the favicon ([[Site Identity Button]]) on the left end of the location bar.
*A click on the "More Information" button will open the Security tab of the "Page Info" window (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
*Go to the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Tools > Page Info" window.
*Select the first image link and scroll down though the list with the Down arrow key.
*If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

  • Fix cost for 1 pixel vertical green line

How much would it cost to fix a monitor with 1 pixel width vertical green line down the screen?

    Hello,
I have a similar issue since this morning.... MacBook Air 13"  C02GM1ASDJWV
And also 3 months after the warranty is over....Strange.....
In general, i'm starting to be disapointed with apple products as like my iphone, i had issue juste after the one year warranty was finished. I'm wondering why?
Please notice that i'm a user since a long time of mac products and didn't had any issue before. It was the reason i was staying a mac user. But now things seems different.
I'll have a look if i can change my computer screen my self or for  a sheap price somewhere. But no way that i spend 500euros for that....

  • Thin vertical green lines on 30" Apple Display

I am occasionally getting patches of short vertical green lines on my 30" display
    using Nvidia GF8800GT 512MB
If I put system to sleep when it awakes it's ok
is this indicative of pending failure
this is the second graphics card in my new two month old Mac Pro, original card just stopped working.

    Hi
Not yet resolved it is erratic when it occurs but lasts for the session and is apparent in any graphics irrespective of application. I had a feeling it was a graphics card problem but may be wrong. I will have to try a stress test when I get chance.

  • Vertical green line on Qosmio's G20 LCD Screen

    (Sorry for my bad English)
    Hi all,
    my laptop have a vertical green line on the right side of the screen.this line is visible in BIOS screen also. so i think it is a hardware related issue.but one good thing is that it is not visible in a white background.i don't know why;
Is there any thing i can do other than replacing the screen(i don't have any warranty on the LAPTOP :( )
The problem occurred after installing windows 7 beta edition,it changed my resolution to 1400 * 900 and i think which may cause an overheat on graphics card which may lead to my problem.
    Please help me.

    > Is there any thing i can do other than replacing the screen (i don't have any warranty on the LAPTOP )
I would not replace the screen before you would not know whats exactly wrong.
I mean there could be also a graphic card issue and not screen issue.
In your case I would recommend connecting the machine to the external monitor to check if the same vertical line would appears on a second monitor.
If the same lines are visible on both screens then its definitely not a screen issue but GPU issue and in such case the mobo must be replaced :(

  • 30" ACD  Vertical green lines.

My compueter was in Screen saver mode and when woke it up there are vertical green lines in bunches of 5-8 intermittently across the screen. Is this a monitor issue or a graphics card? Had monitor for 3 months and no such issues before.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   30" ACD

Could be the display or the video card. Sounds like something is temperature sensitive.
Blow out all the dust in your mac pro.
    Reseat the video card.
    See if these help.
You would need another display to check the card and another computer to check the display.
Also see if any of the threads in the More Like This section on the right side of this page have any ideas.

imac 21inch 2010 on boot vertical green lines then white screen ,will not load can anyone help please

    Howdy carliosa,
If your iMac is not starting up normally you may need to do some checking to make sure things are working correctly. I would suggest starting with the steps in this article -
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Power Mac G4 having video problems -green dots and pixelated lines

Yesterday my Power Mac G4 running OS X (10.5.1) started having unusual video problems. I started to notice green dots on the screen where the mouse pointer had been or where application windows had recently been. The severity of the video symptoms seem to vary - from a cluster of green pixels to slight amount of fuzz in text.
I'm thinking that this is a symptom of a problem with the video card starting to fail but I haven't ruled out the Apple Studio Display either. While the Mac was still under Apple Care support, I did have the video card replaced a few years ago due to symptoms that were much more severe than this.
Should I get a new video card? Could it be the display at fault? How expensive would it be to take it in to the local Apple store for diagnosis/repair?

  • How do I get rid of the dotted line on right side of bounding box

Ever since I upgraded to CS5, I seem to have a broken dotted line along the right side of the bounding box of the png logo that was created for my company.  It wasn't there before. I've gone back to my original back up of the logo and this broken line is in all the versions now.
Whenever I use the artwork a single dash/dotted line is left on the far right, where the right vertical line of the bounding box would have been. You can see it in the image below on the right.  Its a faint white line but when printed on a banner its stark white.  The line falls just above the last "A" in Alberta.
I can use Illustrator and Photoshop basics and but have trouble when I get into problems like this.
Can anyone help me figure out why its there and how to get rid of it?
    I would appreciate any help!
    Thanks.

    Wade and Monica,
    Thanks for your help.
Wade, it hit me when you asked "why is it a png" file and I realized that I was using the wrong file.  Sometimes its hard to see the forest for the trees!  Problem for banner artwork fixed and I have now used the correct logo file so no more dotted line.
The dotted line only appears on the the png version of the logo.  There's no coloured background on the logo file.  She gave me the file as both an eps and a png file. I'm pretty sure she created the logo in Illustrator.  I've been using the png file for the website, which is what I thought it worked well for.  And the eps one for my print materials.
I have no clue why I grabbed the png instead of the eps logo file I usually use, but thanks for pointing out the obvious since I wasted time trying to fix it and was getting very frustrated at what had suddenly gone "wrong".
I still have that dotted line on the png file of the logo but I'll have to figure that out another day.
    Thanks again!
    Hasmi
