Vertical iPhone Footage into Final Cut

I have some iPhone footage that was shot vertically and needs to stay vertical but straight from the phone (into FCP 6) the footage has to render for extended lengths of time that makes editing a lengthy burden every time you change an opacity or any setting or move a clip a little. I figure processing the footage through Compressor would help but I can't find an appropriate preset to maintain the footage's vertical integrity. I read a solution posted here about 'Apple ProRes 422 (LT)' preset but I don't have that in my version of Compressor (3.0.5) so I cannot test it.
Does anyone know of a work around or what settings I need to change to create this preset (if this preset would even work for what I need).

Hi M.
Take a look atr this discussion.

  • Iphone footage into Final Cut Express

I left a question earlier in this forum and would like to update (hopefully that's proper process!). I'll repeat the question, in case:
I'm trying to get footage from iPhone 4 to Final Cut Express. I'm using MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2. In the tutorial I found, they did an export to Quicktime, selecting the Apple Intermediate Codec as the compression, 29.97 as the Frame, and "1280 x 720 (unscaled)" as the frame size option (I'm also selecting frame blending and better downscaling, and turning off interlaced scaling; the rest are Streamclip defaults). My version of Streamclip doesn't have a 1280x720 (unscaled), so I've been forced to select 1280x720 (HDTV 720P). Not sure if this is my problem.
On recent attempts, I've managed to get the clip into a QuickTime format (using the settings above) in a way that doesn't look stretched (can't tell whether it is or not). When I import the clip into FCE, it comes in without having to be rendered, and looks as if it's not stretched there either. But as soon as I drop the clip into the sequence and try to play it, I get the "Dropped Frames" warning. I'm already operating in RT Safe mode, and rarely/never have problems w/ dropped frames with clips that were captured from my Sony camera/tape. Is the AIC codec more demanding of faster drives? (I'm using a 200Gig external Apple drive at the moment). Or is it because I have been forced to export as a 1280x720 HDTV 720p as opposed to unscaled?
In FCE I've set easy set up to:
Apple Intermediate Codec, 29.97, and HDV AIC 720 p30; Is this a match with the Export QT version?
And if so, would the clip be coming into my sequence without having to be rendered? Since I haven't had to upgrade my hardware for my other camera, I'd be reluctant to go out and buy more external disk power, in the event it doesn't do me any good.
I know there are several posts on people trying to get iphone footage into FCE already, but they don't seem to apply and, after hours on the internet looking for a solution, I'm at my wits end. PLEASE HELP
    Thanks in advance!!

The 4s records video as MPEG4/AVC (H.264)/1080p/30fps in a .mov filetype.   Final Cut Express is NOT designed to edit this kind of video.  You need to convert the 4s video clips to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec/1080i before importing them into FCE.  You can use MPEG Streamclip to do the conversion.  In FCE you also need to select a matching Easy Setup (should be AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 for converted 4s clips) and create a new Sequence to edit your video.  This should eliminate the constant re-rendering problem.
ps.  Final Cut Express was discontinued in 2011 even before OS X Lion was released. It is no longer supported by Apple and there is no guarantee it will run properly on Yosemite.  Just so you know.  Final Cut Pro X is the currently supported app.

    Hi davidframe!
    Thanks for posting.
Not having made those applications themselves, Canon does not have step-by-step instructions for bringing slow motion footage into Final Cut Pro or Premiere.  However, I am sure either Apple or Adobe have some helpful instructions they can provide if you contact them directly.

  • How do I get HVX200 footage into Final Cut 4.5?

This may be a redundant question, and I am currently in the process of waiting for my upgrade to Final Cut Studio to arrive in the mail, but in the meantime, just received a HVX200 camera in the mail yesterday and was wondering if it is possible to get the footage in my computer. I followed the instructions in the operation manual and my G5 did recognize the camera as a separate drive via Firewire on the desktop which is full of .mxf files. Being new to HD video, I just did a basic Firewire hook-up from the camera straight into the computer and hoped that I would be able to capture the footage via Final Cut 4.5 HD. Obviously I was wrong. After doing some research, I've seen several ways of getting the footage into the system, most of which refer to the latest version of Final Cut Studio, but nothing much on how to get it into 4.5 other than some confusing mentions of somehow converting the footage in Quicktime files. If the .mxf files can be converted into Quicktime and then edited in Final Cut 4.5 until my upgrade arrives in the mail, can someone please help me with this? The bad news is as of now I only have Mac OS X version 10.3.7. I do plan on upgrading very soon, but was curious if it is still possible to make the HD footage editable on the system I currently are running - 10.3.7 and FC 4.5. If anybody could help, I would appreciate it very much.
    Mac G5 Dual-Processor with Final Cut HD 4.5   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Do I have to be running the latest version of Tiger for this to work? I ask because the new Quicktime download method did not work from OS 10.3.9. Maybe I'm still doing something wrong. Either way, I'm completely confused. First of all, what mode does the HVX200 need to be in? MCR/VCR or PC/DUB mode? My main question is how to convert those .mxf files into editable and viewable Quicktime files. Can I select a "convert" option somewhere? Am I overlooking something here completely? The thing that baffles me is the Firewire cable running from the tower to the camera displays the HVX200 files on my desktop under a white-drive icon that reads "no name". I just so badly want to grab them and convert them to editable Quicktime files that my 4.5 Version of Final Cut will import and recognize. Looks like that would be a relatively easy thing to do, but apparently not. Honestly, all that I got out of the link that you attached was apparently just how to upgrade to the latest version of Quicktime which would recognize "XL1" footage, not HVX200 HD footage. The posting didn't appear to be directed towards the HVX200/FCP 4.5 solely.
In your original posting, you mentioned that FCP 4.5 would actually allow HVX200 footage in or at least knew a way to go about getting the footage into a system like mine. My question is, from your personal experience, can you give me a more accurate step-by-step description of what I need to do from hooking up the HVX200 to the G5 tower via Firewire and so on....
It just seems that only upgrading Quicktime doesn't really get me anywhere near where I need to be. As I just try to figure out the common-sense of this all, it sounds like the computer IS recognizing the camera and the P2 card - hence the icon the appears on my desktop full of my video files labeled as .mxf files. So from here, the only thing that I can figure is that the only way to see my clips are to convert those files into another file (such as Quicktime) that FCP 4.5 wouldn't have any trouble reading??? CORRECT???? Seems like this is the only way it's gonna fly on the system I have...until I get the FCS upgrade. That said, I've got a two week wait and I'm impatient to watch my footage on my high quality Apple monitor!!
Sorry to be a bother about this, but any additional help is welcomed!

  • Importing TV footage into Final Cut

I imported video from a tv show into final cut. When it plays it like stutters... I thought this was just a play back issue and that once I exported it the video ticking would go away but it doesn't. Any ideas on how to fix this?

What format is this TV show?  What CODEC?  And don't say "It's a Quicktime Movie..." That says nothing.  We need to know what TYPE of QT movie.  FCP doesn't work with any format you decide to throw at it.  It requires that the footage be converted to a few specific Quicktime codecs.  And that list can be found in the EASY SETUP menu (in the Final Cut Pro menu).

  • Getting DVD footage into Final Cut X?

    Hi,
I am an actor who has just got Final Cut X and want to edit my showreel on it. I have various dvds of my work. Could anyone please suggest the best way to convert the dvd and get them into Final Cut please?
    All the best, Anna

I'm trying to do the same thing.  I have an unprotected DVD which I am trying to import into Final Cut Pro X but the "free" MPEG Streamclip software which you mention says that:
"The Apple QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component is not installed...
You will miss the two most important features of MPEG Streamclip:
    - you won't be able to play MPEG-2 files and transport streams;
    - you won't be able to convert MPEG-2 files and transport streams to QuickTime, DV, AVI.
However, all other features are always available, including playback and conversion of MPEG-1 to QuickTime, DV, AVI, demuxing of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, AC3 decoding, and conversion from transport streams to MPEG files (useful if you have Toast 6).
MPEG Streamclip is free of charge but the MPEG-2 Playback Component has a small price (around $20/£15/€20 in most countries); you can buy it online from Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2"
Hm....How do I get the right format for FCP X?
    Thanking you.

  • Editing iPhone footage in final cut pro

So my sister got baptized and I'm trying to put together a hightlight of this awesome event. I did not have my video camera on me, but I did have my iPhone. I shot a 3 minute video and then brought it into FCP without any issues. It plays perfectly in the timeline, or so I thought. I'm letting the timeline adjust itself automatically to format to the iPhone video settings. 640x480, H.264 encoding. I have to render but that's only because the audio.
The issue I'm having is with the transitions from video to still pictures I imported from another camera. I'm adding a simple "fade in / fade out" and it's doing crazy things to my work flow. The video now jumps or lags and will not play smooth. Also when I transition into a picture from video it flickers real bad. I've tried everything and can't get it to work. Last night I started using iMovie and that was terrible. I need some help on workflow here. I should be able to go in and out of video and pictures without any problems. My exported video even jumps so I know there is something wrong. I tried just putting two iphone video clips back to back and there was lag there as well. I edit HD footage all the time and have a loaded system. So I know it's not hard ware...
    PLEASE HELP!
    MacBook Pro 2.4 15" 4 gig RAM   Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Convert the video in Compressor or the QT Pro player to motionjpeg or some other editing format.
    Use that instead.
Remember that the original footage is heavily compressed and using a transcode won't improve the footage, just the edit.

  • How do I bring Sony F3 footage into Final Cut Pro?

    Hi,
    Would love some help here.
I know the file are supposed to work well in FCP, however i dont have the plug ins.
I tried to convert the files to pro res 422 using mpeg streamclip, but that didnt work either.
    would love some advice,
    thanks

The F3 records XDcam to sxs cards?
I believe you need Sony XDCam Transfer 2.12 available here:
    https://www.servicesplus.sel.sony.com/sony-software-model-PDZKP1.aspx
Once you install it, in FCP you go to the File > Import menu and choose XDcam. It will launch XDCam transfer and will put the clips in your project.

  • How can I import DVD footage in Final Cut Pro X

I want to edit a showreel of my own work in Final Cut Pro X (version 10.1.4). A lot of my old footage is only available on DVD. I need to get this footage into Final Cut Pro X but don't know how to do this. There are programs to convert DVD to DV but I don't know which one to use, and how to use them.

The script provided by MPEG Streamclip worked for me.
But there is an alternate way, which is basically doing by hand what the script does.
The actual component that is needed is stored inside an archive file in the inside the package. This file needs to be copied to a place where the system can see it.
Here are detailed instructions. Be sure you fully understand before putting any files in the Library folders, as described below. No guarantees, but if followed correctly I believe this works.
    1) Double-click the .dmg file.
    2) Inside there are two folders. Open the one that says "For Quicktime 6.4 or later..."
    3) Control-click the QuickTimeMPEG32.pkg and choose "Show Package Contents".
    4) Copy the file "Archive.pax.gz" somewhere else on your mac - I will use the Desktop as an example.
    5) Double click the copy of "Archive.pax.gz" on your desktop. It will expand and create a folder on the desktop called "System".
    6) Inside the folder called "System" is a folder "Library" and then "Quicktime", with a single file called "QuickTimeMPEG2.component".
This is the file that MPEG Streamclip needs!
    7) I suggest you place this file in your own user's Library. To do this, hold down the option key and select Library from the Go menu in the Finder. There, if it does not exist already, create a folder "QuickTime" and copy the component there. This should work.
Note: the script actually places the component in a different location - one which I think should not be messed with (inside /System/Library).
I think it should work in the user's Library, but if not I would put in /Library (the Library at the root of the drive) before trying the location above.

  • Inputting footage from Final Cut Pro

I have input footage into Final Cut Pro, but would now like to try iMovie '09.
Can i move my footage from Final Cut into iMovie or do i have to input all over again?

iMovie should read all your FCP footage including ProRes movies as long as it's the same mac or another mac with FCP installed. Make a new folder in 'iMovie Events' and place your FCP movies. Next time you launch iM09 it will build thumbnails and footage will be read to use.

  • Transfer AVCHD footage shot in SD standard into Final Cut

Shoot a performance with Sony Camera AVCHD in SD instead of HD. Unfortunately I will not be able to re-shoot this event. How can I use the footage in Final Cut. I shot in SD cus I use another Sony tape based camera, shooting in 1080i and capture to Final Cut at DV standard. I read somewhere that I should not mix HD and SD and that was why I set the avchd format camera to record in SD. What do I need to do. I have the latest version of Final Cut. Need help desperately.
    Thanks

First, the FCP version I am using is 5.1.4.
Ouch. That's going to be a problem as "Log and Transfer", being FCP's interface for handling modern camera native tapeless media formats was only introduced and included with the FCP version 6 and later releases.
The exact message I get when I drag the clip to mpeg stream is "File Open Error. Unsupported file type"
Indeed, as with QuickTime, this AVCHD format is not natively recognized.
If you are working on a FCP 5.1.4 system then you're going to need a third party transcoding tool to convert this footage to a suitable edit format for your system (such as Apple Intermediate Codec aka AIC). Do you have Roxio Toast 10 or later? That has the capability to quickly transcode to any codec in your system. Another transcoding option is dedicated app like VoltaicHD. Or a favorite for many is a rewraping solution like ClipWrap 2 which manipulates only the container format in order to make the files readable on your system.

  • Unable to capture from the Panasonic AJ-HD1400 deck into Final Cut

I am working on a project where I need to use the Panasonic AJ-HD1400 deck and import 720p footage from the Vericam into final cut. I am able to connect to the deck via firewire but when I playback footage or try to capture I get a black screen and error message saying that FCP isn't getting a video signal.
I have tried multiple capture and sequence settings, none of which have worked. The one I have read that I am suppose to use is the easy set up for DVCPRO HD 720p24.
The footage is shot from the Panasonic Vericam which shoots at 60 fps. The footage has been flagged both 24p and 60p during different takes. - Which I have read you are suppose to convert using the DVC PRO HD Frame Rate Converter after it has been imported.
Anyone out there know how to solve this issue,

  • Red Footage and Final Cut Server

    Aloha gang-
I am still testing FCS in our studio and enjoy many of the features in this product. I love being able to search for footage and pull it into my FCP project with no waiting (using edit-in-place). But I am looking for some advice and knowledge regarding Red Footage.
    My scenerio is this:
We render all our red footage to offline files that we will use in the post production process. I want to tag all those files with appropriate metadata so our edit team can search and retrieve files as they need it. But with red there are 7 files (in our workflow) that correspond to the same thing. Basically there is the original R3D file which can not be used in FCP, there are the 4 quicktime proxies that the camera generates and live in the same folder as the R3D, and these are the files I want to get back to after the production is through and archived. There is the offline quicktime we generate to edit with which we need to tag. There is a log and transfer quicktime we can log and transfer all this data to FCS (but it doubles the data size so I am not looking to use this one and edit performance is okay at best), and finally there is the folder that the 4 proxies and original red file live in.
All of these files should be search able by the same metadata. Imagine the shot is of a blue bird. When I type blue bird I would want all of these files to show up (obviously I could limit my search so I only get the version I need for what I am doing i.e. offline, proxie, etc. I have made metadata lookups for this so this is not the challenge.)
The challenge is I only want to log 1 of these files and have the metadata applied to all of them. They all have almost identical names. The offline, R3D, and folder file have the exact same name. The proxies are identical but with _F, _H, _M, and _P behind them. For the catalog process I only want to transcode proxies for the _M (The _F, _H take way too long and the proxies look the same as _M and the _P is too small
I could make them a bundle but that does not help too much as the offline lives in a different place as the footage.
Any ideas would be greatful. My easiest solution is to tag the files twice, once for the production and once for the archive, but this seems like a waste of time that I could have a computer do instead
P.S. anyone successful in getting the metadata out of the red file, I see the red metadata set, and have it in place, but can not get it to show anything no matter which file I upload.
Any ideas, or help would be great

Thank you for your replies. I guess my question is not really answered because of the conundrum associated with red footage
But my workflow to get through this will be as follows: (In case anyone is interested)
Set a scan to bring in the offline quicktimes as they are rendered and have someone tag them with meaningful tags to help us search during the production. I will send those to archive when we are done.
After the project is completed and the files are removed from Final Cut Server I will set a scan to import all the _M files (they transcode faster and quality is not an issue since it is making proxies) and tag them as best I can for the long haul (archive) I can either leave the media on the drive or back it up, depending on the immediate use of the files. This works very well if the media is still there as I can just drag the _M into Clipfinder and render the shot I need as I need it.
I am storing these clips in folders labeled CC_LTOXXX (where XXX is the number for the LTO tape which increases by one for each tape I use. When I import them into Final Cut Server from the LTO folder I have a direct line to which LTO tape the file lives on. It's not easy to get the files back (so with files used frequently I will also keep a copy on an external drive I can just plug in) from an LTO, but it is doable.
If anyone has an easy way to pull a list of files from an LTO tape that would be great, and even better if it could be a list Final Cut Server made, or if Final Cut Server could just pull the files. My LTO is a network drive so I would have to access it through an IP address, but if I could do that I would be golden.
Anyway I know this will all evolve and this is just where I am right now, any ideas would be appreciated.
