Vertical lighting problems on 15"MBP

Hi all.
I've been having a problem with the display on my late-2008 (non-unibody) MBP. Most often it happens when the computer gets hot--gaming or watching movies. Anyway, the screen suddenly dims quite a bit, and I'm left with something like this:
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/3160/photo082409001.jpg
The screenshot was taken while running XP, where it happens much more frequently, but I definitely have the problem in OSX too.
I think there may be new display drivers out for Windows on this edition of the MBP, but I haven't been able to figure out which ones/get them working. I know I have all the drivers that were on the Leopard DVD that I got with my computer in January.
I've scoured the internet (or at least Googled until I could Google no more), and haven't been able to find an answer. Any thoughts?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It looks like you have the "Strange Vertical Stripes" Issue:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1627678&start=0&tstart=0
I haven't read this thread in a long time, and I don't know if there was ever a real resolution to it.
Good luck!

  • T43 Vertical Scrolling Problem (not just Firefox)- Any official response from Lenovo

After searching the forum, i have not been able to find any response from Lenovo as to how to correct this problem.
Incidentally, my "occasional" vertical scrolling problem occurs in any browser,  IE7, Firefox3, Opera9 (at least those 3) as well as Windows applications with a vertical scroll bar like Windows Explorer.
This only started to occur very randomly around 6 months ago.  But as of late it is occuring more often.
    The only work-around
    http://blog.jonschneider.com/2008/03/workaround-thinkpad-gets-into-always.html
might indicate that it is a possible hardware problem.
However, I have to say that I rarely use the laptop scrolling buttons and 99.9% of the time, latetly, I use a Logitech laser USB mouse for scrolling purposes.
As another possible work-around (if you are using an external mouse) is to uncheck the enable virtual scrolling in the touchpad properties window.
I certainly hope it is not a hardware problem, as the warranty on my T43 ran out a long time ago.
btw, I am running Windows XP Pro XP3.

  • Vertical Scrolling problem in Safari

I'm currently having an odd vertical scrolling problem in Safari.  This issue is not reproduced in Chrome or Firefox.
I've been able to reproduce this issue doing something very simple:
I have a browser wide rectangle with a solid color.
Beneath that I have a browser wide photo.  (Rectangle set to browser edges and then fit to fill with photo.)
And beneath that I have another browser wide rectangle with a solid color.
    Then I scroll.
Once the photo (the middle element) reaches the top of the screen I have shut the scrolling off so the photo will stay static. (Initial motion 1 / Final motion 0 set in the "Fill/Scroll" tab - and the key position is set so it stops at the top of the browser.)  As expected, the lowest box continues to scroll upwards and cover the static photo.
This very simple effect is flawless in Preview mode, Chrome, and Firefox.
Yet in Safari, the photo, once it reaches its resting spot, does stay static, but seems to jump and jitter all over the place while I continue scrolling and the below content covers it.  (In the other browsers it's super solid like a real static background.)
I've read there are some parallax scrolling bugs in Safari Mavericks.  But I'm still in an older operating system using 10.8.5 and Safari 6.0.5.
Any suggestions or work arounds on how to correct this? (Again, I'm controlling the scroll using the scroll tab found with "Fill". Should I also be using the one found under Scroll Effects?  What the best one to use? Although it does work in the other browsers… so…  maybe I'm not doing anything wrong and this really is a Safari problem.)
    Thanks you.

  • HT3964 MacBook Pro beeps and vertical lights on screen

MacBook Pro 2years old vertical lights come on beeps then I have to restart  anyone help please

Try resetting your PRAM. If that doesn't work, you may need to get it looked at. It could be a power supply or hard drive issue.

  • I have several problems with my MBP 2012 13"

So I have several problems with my MBP 2012 13", and apparently according to Apple Store guys there is nothing wrong in their system checking devices they use. I list the problems briefly:
    - After connecting USB devices laptop gets stuck for up to 30 seconds
    - Clicking on WIFI toggle in finder gets Finder stuck
    - Spotlight gets Finder stuck for 10 seconds
    - Sometimes apps closes without reason
    - Some desktops randomly becomes "unreachable" (I select it and it automatically switches to the one on the right)
    - Facetime sometimes doesnt activate camera
    - Trash bin takes forecer to get rid of files (once one hour for 200MB)
    - Fan works at full speed randomly
    - Screen becomes dark by itelf and computer goes to sleep, making impossible for me to wake him up. I have to open and close lid several times and press multiple times the power button.
I showed Apple Store guys the finder problems and the USB ones but they connected their things and said there is no problem. Laptop was bought new on August 2012.
What I am supposed to do?
    Thanks

when I hold on the menu button it doesn't fade anymore, like it used to. It just goes to the previous menu
If you are talking about the backlight, I think this was changed by Apple in one of the recent updates, so the only way to change it back would be to install an earlier version of the iPod software. I don'tknow why your albums are not updating, but often a Reset and/or Restore will fix problems like that.

  • Satellite 3000 screen vertical line problem

my laptop is Satellite 3000 , it got vertical line problem now, i wanna use a outside CRT screen to replace the current damaged LED screen.
I have tried to use FN-F5 swap key, but it is still doesn't work, i tried to log in the system to check it, (the system (windows xp) is normal), but i can't see anything because the screen is black, it won't get in the system even if i connected it in to the LAN, because the laptop network function configuration is not allow connect with internet,( i did ghost before it completely damaged), the question is :
1, do i need to configure something so as to it can use outside screen in windows XP system? or just use FN-F5 swap key?
2, how will i do next step if i wanna use the outside screen ?
    thx a lot

    Hello
If the notebook is preinstalled with all Toshiba designed tools and utilities FN+F5 key combination should work. Of course the external monitor should be connected properly.
If you are missing some tools FN+F5 key combination will not work.
What I want to know is what happens exactly when you use FN+F5 key combination? Stays the LCD screen black or switch to the right picture again? As far as I know if you use FN+F5 key combination and LCD on the notebook stays black that means the signal is send to external device but if the monitor is not connected properly or there is some contact problem you will not see the content on external monitor.
Believe me it is not easy to say what is wrong there but if possible try to test it with different monitors. Satellite 3000 is pretty old notebook model and maybe is RGB port defective.

  • Anyone NOT having Keyboard problems with newer MBP!

After reading about all the keyboard problems on the newer MBPs, is there anyone NOT having keyboard lockups or dropping letter problems? Looking to purchase a MBP soon but after reading about the many keyboard problems I will probably postpone or decide to get a different machine.

There might be a couple of things to try. You could borrow an external keyboard to use for a while--or even buy a cheap one used, and see if you still have problems or not. If you don't, there's likely a problem with the MBP keyboard itself.
Also, if you have access to an Apple Store, you might be able to make an appointment with the genius bar and get a definite diagnosis. It may be possible to arrange to get in a replacement keyboard at the Apple Store and have them fix it while you wait. Don't know for sure if that would be possible, but it's worth asking. Same with an Apple authorized repair shop--it might be possible to get it fixed without having to send it off.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2009: back light problem

    Hey guys,
I was hoping you could offer me some advice.
My 13" Macbook Pro from mid 2009 has been having some backlight issues. Sometimes, after opening the screen, the backlight won't turn on. If I shine through the Apple logo on the back with a torch, you can see the log-in screen, so I'm pretty sure the problem lies with the back light.
I have tried ressetting the SMC and PRAM, yet that hasn't helped. The only way to get the backlight to turn back on is to remove the cover, unplug the battery, hold the power button for 5 seconds, plug back in the battery, put the cover back, and then turn it on.
So far I had to do this every 2 months or so, yet now the screen seems to die more and more often. As you can imagine, it's quite a pain having to go through this process over and over.
Again, any advice to fix this issue would be fantastic.
    Thanks!

I appreciate the response, but my issue does not appear in the linked article as a reason to reset the SMC. Resetting the SMC seems like something too radical to fix something that should "just work". My MBP generally takes too long to wake up or doesn't wake up at all. If it doesn't wake up, I hold the power button and restart. Very annoying, since my wife can resume work on her PC faster coming out of Windows 7 hibernation mode.
    Thanks, Apple!

  • Unknown problem with the mbp

Sorry for the long story but please i need some answers.
    Macbook Pro 15" (2010 mid)
    Hello everyone,
I've bought my mbp 19 months ago. After 3 months story started. When i bought it people were complaining about battery life screen issues and stuff.I was lucky about it. i didnt had problem. Then i had a kernel panic on screen and as intructions said i had to force shutdown via power button then it didnt, computer locked up colorful pixels showed up and the problem is i had full battery.i waited until battery ran out ( 11 hours ) and noticed that cpu was heating then cooling heating and cooling randomly. then it started to heat heat heat and i realised that it was over heating.i grabbed a cooling pad and cooled my lappy down from 110 to down to 20. ( i got a little accessory for cooking thats how i mesured. ) well 11 hours passed and battery was fully discharged that even battery indicator lights wasn't turning on.I plugged the charger fully charged and boot. Dang ! 1st thing i've noticed that SIL (Status indicator Light) wasn't looking good.the left sight was bright and it was getting dimmer to the left. In morning i took it to the service , said what i have experienced but they were unable to find problem. After a while laptop was runing nice no issues nothing. 1 day i put my laptop on charge with it was off. after a while when i came back touched my laptop i got shocked and charger light turned it self off.( it was fully charged and it was on table no static electric) then i boot laptop. SIL turned up DVD rom tested it (screen is still black ) i heard the sound then it restarted it self before the screen came up.then laptop turned on after 3 minutes. i did a restarted and i noticed that dvd was checking it self very slowly ( like a casette player with  low battery ) and mbp turned it self off. i took it to the service again and it was ok ! mbp was working really good without issues.Time passed one day i booted screen came up and it did a pram reset it self all dates and stuff were gone. i did all settings and restarted and again !. after few restarts all the settings came back to normal.for a while with a double restart issue ( when i boot it restarts twice before the grey screen comes. Then it became okey. 1st 3 months its okey then other 4 months i had these problems. Then i had a wireless device issue ( it fixed it self ) at the other hand. When i watch a video from youtube, video freezes onces at a time ( 10 sec ). When i watch movie it freezes same no metter resolution is. Then i noticed that i have the same freeze when i use flash application or java, or when i play flash games it freezes. When i play a fps game like CS:S or COD or any. after 5 min fps drops from 60 to 15-14 with a mouse lag and a keyboard lag. After a while i decided to get a SSD in this baby and have a good performance and battery life. i've got a Corsair SSD Force GT 120GB Sata 3 ( got sata 3 for future ) and installed lion. well laptop was working awsome it wasnt overheating eihter. but i still have the same problem with freezes and fps lags. and i fear that overheat at kernel panic freeze damaged a core. Also when service opened up case to install SSD in it we noticed something near battery look at the picture.

  • 17" MacBookPro LCD light problem

Hi, I hope somebody can help me with this...
2 months ago (may 2011), I bought a MBP 17" 4GB RAM 1GB video, the thing is, I used it normally the last time (I don´t remember if that day installed a new firmware, but I believe I installed one few days before the problem) and i turned it off, when I tried to turn it on, I heard the sounds and a CD reading, but the LCD is just black, dead, like it is unplugged, I can adjust the volume and hear the sound of it, I can see the light of the keyboard, and then, if I use my MBP with a window behind of me, with the sunlight I can see the desktop and the menus and use them, that´s why I believe the LCD light is not working. As I said before, I just bought it 2 months ago in USA, but I took it out of the country for work and I can´t find the ticket!, does anybody know if the warranty applies in another country (Mexico)? as an additional data, my MBP haven´t suffered the minimum hit or fall, it has no scratches at all.
    Please somebody help me! =(

I think your best bet would be to call Apple on the phone and explain your situation and see what they suggest:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/
Down at the bottom there is a number listed for Mexico.
You are clearly under warranty, and this does sound like a hardware problem of some sort that should be covered.
    Good luck!

  • Problems booting up MBP

    Hi
    I have a MBP 1.1 2.16 Core Duo...
When i turn it on, it powers up because i can hear the fans, however i just get black screen... After a while it will boot up and the drives start spinning etc and all is fine...
I have noticed that sometime if i put the laptop down on the desk or sometinh gthen it will load up, almost like a knock to the underside of the laptop has a small impact it works, like something may be loose inside...
I have also noticed that this problem has only started after i did a system restore from 10.5 to 10.4 (it came with 10.4 then i upgraded to 10.5... But have since had to do a restore but no longer have the 10.5 discs)
Does this sound like a hardware issue, and is it just coincidental that the problem has started after a fresh install??
I have also noticed, that the small light on the front next to the latch on the lid no longer lights up properly, when in operation... Does this mean anything?
I hope i have explained this clearly enough to give you an idea of what is happeing....  Any info will be greatly appreciated..
    Thanks in advance..

try a smc, powerr off machine, restart the computer>hold down left side left side shift key, control, option all at te same timewhem\n you here the start up chime and push the keys and hold the down untill the gear stops spinng.
You can also try a PRAM reset:power off, pwer up after chime hold option, command, the letter P and hte letter R.Keep holding these keys till you get3 chimes. wait till it goes thru it's thing.
Log out shut down, and restart, see if this helps.
    Good luck,

  • "Aperture (3.2) cannot be opened because of a problem." on MBP Core 2 Duo, 10.7.2

I recently upgraded to 3.2 from the App Store and was able to run the program until today. I am now completely unable to open it. I have tried the standard troubleshooting, including moving the application support files to the desktop, deleting the com.apple.aperture preference file, opening while holding CMD and option, and reinstalling. I have also tried moving my Aperture Library to start the program fresh. Nothing has worked; the same "cannot be opened" error persists.
I have read about other users having issues with the program constantly crashing, but that specific problem appears limited to Intel Core Duo processors, while mine is an Intel Core 2 Duo running on a MBP 3,1. I am starting this thread to find out if any with similar specs have had the same issue and known how to resolve it. Thank you in advance for your help!

@Frank: I did read through the article shuttersp33d posted. Unfortunately, for my scenario, the support doc redirects me to a page for OSX Lion reinstallation and recovery:
If you purchased Aperture from the Mac App Store and are running OS X Lion:
See the article OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery for instructions about how to reinstall OS X Lion.
That seems overkill and very inconvenient. Can I resolve this issue by restoring PluginManager files from before I installed FC, or something like that?
    Thanks again.

  • Wireless Problem with New MBP

    Hey there,
My MBP is about a month old, and I've been getting alot of disconnects. At home, I'm connected to my router, and at school with the wifi all over. I don't really notice it until Microsoft Messenger alerts me that I'm disconnected. And when I'm on bootcomp (to play Gunbound with some friends) I get disconnected because my connection was lost. I have to reconnect. I haven't really timed it. Can someone give me a suggestion or solution?
    Thanks.

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro 2.2ghz and I am having the same problem where everytime I close the screen or walk away or close the internet after 5 min I have to reconnect to the net. Is there a soluton for this, I am running off a trendnet 54mbps 11g wireless router. it's a piece of crap but does the job. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem it's extremely frustrating when you have to constantly reconnect to the interent. Thanks.

  • Can someone help me with my 27" iMac's Gray screen with 5 Pink Vertical Line Problem?

    Hi there,
I'm new to the forums, but I have a serious problem with my nearly 4 year old iMac 27" model.
I was using my iMac one evening and then suddenly everything displayed on the screen gets immediately pushed to the left of the computer screen. Then after a minute, my screen turns a solid gray, displaying no dock, no header bar, no options, and the keyboard and mouse suddenly disconnect.
When I turned back on my computer, it seemed to boot up perfectly normal. The normal gray start-up screen displays:
Then it displays the Apple logo and begins to spin the loading circle icon below it. But this time it adds 5 vertical pink lines down the screen from left to right. They stay in place the entire time:
And then when the login screen finishes loading, instead of bringing up my Account and my Password text box, it displays just a solid gray screen with the same 5 pink vertical lines on it, as shown below:
I've let it set for a half hour and nothing changes. During this time the keyboard and mouse seem to be disconnected, nothing seems to work with the screen or the computer itself. I hold the on/off button on the rear, turning it off and then on again. The same process happens with the boot up, the Apple logo appears, then the spinning loading icon below it, and then the vertical bars appear and the Apple logo and spinning icon disappear.
Is this a problem with the screen that an external monitor hooked up to it might fix, or is it a graphics card problem? I didn't buy the extended warranty package for the computer and it's roughly 3 1/2 years old.
Any idea what might cause this and how it could be fixed in the cheapest way possible?

I have the same problem since yesterday evening.
    My google research found this:
iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program - Apple Support
Maybe this is our problem. My iMac fits into this category.

  • Problem with image MBP "15

    Hi guys,
Lately, after being connected with my MBP 15" many hours and with the following open programs, such as Illustrator, Photoshop, Safari, iTunes .. Sometimes it goes without so much..
I get the image of the screen as follows: http://i4.minus.com/ijotdB6nHoHlP.png
(notice the sides, and sometimes some buttons (close, minimize, maximize, applications titles, etc.) they are the same way, these traits)
Just need reboot the machine to return everything to normal. But it is annoying and inconvenient..
I have a MBP Mid 2010 and had never happened. Does is the graphics card? Connectors? Screen? Or other influences? I can mention that he never dropped.
Is there anyone with the same problem or has experienced the same?
    MacBook Pro 15" (Mid 2010)
CPU: 2,4 GHz Intel Core i5
    RAM: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 288 MB
HDD: Hitachi HTS545032B9SA02 320 GB SATA
I need help, urgently. Because I use the MBP for my work. Thanks a lot.
    HUG!

There's only one logic board for that model and, as I wrote, many that have purchased the logic board have had the same problems some months later. So there's really no logic board to recommend... unless you want the same.
If I were you, before doing any upgrades on the machine, I would either look to get it fixed (you'll have to check with an Apple Store or an AASP to determine the cost) or, perhaps, buy a refurbished 'newer' machine and then do the upgrades. For my money, the 2012 15" non-Retina model is the best refurb that you can get (if you can find one!). In the US, we have a flat-rate repair for depot repairs that cover every fault and is only $310USD. I don't think that most countries have that scheme, however.
So take the machine to an Apple Store or an AASP and get a free diagnostic test and estimate for repairs. Then make your decision.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
