Vertical Lines Appear Only in Full Quality DV File

I've had problems with vertical lines, detailed in another topic. This problem is different & very specific: My project has no vertical line problem, until I export it into a Full Quality DV file. The FQ DV file has vertical lines in the first photo of the clip when played in QT 6.5.2. I've deleted the DV file & re-exported 3 times, to no avail. Remember, the original project file has no problems.
It's not like I could do in the original project: Focus on the offending first clip. That first clip is now embedded into a DV clip with all the other clips. Do I just duplicate another DV clip & go thru the usual procedure to eliminate a clip with vertical lines? But, even if I delete the corrupted clip, I cannot replace it with a clean clip, due to the corrupting process that apparently occurs when I export my project to a DV clip.
Should I include a clean KB still at the beginning of my project before exporting it to FQ DV? If so, how do I delete that clip from the DV clip? It seems to me, once you convert to a DV clip, all bets are off re: editing individual components (clips) that make up the DV clip.
Any thoughts, anyone?

Since I started three topics re: vertical line problems & now that, with help from all of you & my own struggles, I've solved the problem(s), I feel I owe an explanation of where I am now.
I thought all the stills I made to extend the duration of the KB clips in my projects were themselves KB clips. Not so. I did not render these clips as KB clips. Therefore, using these clips as place holders had no effect in removing the vertical lines.
Thanks to all for their time, expertise, & patience.

  • Vertical lines, but only upon booting up

    Hi,
my problem occurs (for now) only when booting up my mac and only, when it has been turned off for a few hours. When I start up, about one third of my screen (right side) stays black, then has only vertical lines in different colours, then image starts vibrating and after several minutes settles to normal function. I did a screenshot when the screen was vibrating and on the shot everything looks normal.
Since this only occurs when starting, Apple staff told me on the phone it shouldn't be a hardware error (mhm... is it really that easy?). Tried installing OS X anew and resetting PRAM, like they told me, but error stayed. Any other suggestions what might be the problem here or stuff i could try out (software-wise)?

  • Vertical line appearing on my screen

today I started having a vertical line appear on my screen. It flickered on and off for a while and then came on for good. I can't seem to get this to go away.
By doing a simple search I've found that this is a cable defect in the product and that Apple is not addressing the issue claming this is from overuse and the cable just deteriorated - Surprise you get to pay $700 to have this fixed. This is crazy!!! These computers are supposed to be the Mercedes of the computer world! Not the Yugo that falls apart after you drive over a large bump! I've only had the computer for a year and half!
I'm posting this here to see when Apple plans to address this growing problem.

  • Pink vertical lines appearing on screen

I have a G5 about 2 years old. Recently a pale pink vertical line appeared down the screen, another about 2 weeks later and today a third line appeared. They do not affect the screen's visibility, but I wander if anyone else has found a resolution to this minor problem (without having to go out and purchase a replacement.

    Hi Ocean swimmer-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Makes sure to check the cable connections at both ends.
Which monitor do you have? If you take a screen shot do the lines still show up in the same place?

Unfortunately this sounds like a hardware failure. Run Apple Hardware Test in extended modeat least 2-3 times back to back. If errors appear then you have confirmed my suspicion. However if no errors appear unfortunatelyyou are not out of the woods l yet  because AHT is not the more reliable test. If you do know know how to run AHT please refer to:

  • Vertical lines appear in every photo taken w my 3 yr old Power Shot A470.Can't get rid of them.Help?

in the midst of photo shoot yesterday, this vertical line pattern appeared in every photo and can't get rid of it. Triple checked all my settings, nothing's changed about how I take my photos.
Through the viewfinder when I prefocus I see the result of what my photo should look like after the shot, but after I take it, the shot is 50% lighter, with a horrible pattern of lines. Has my camera totally died? Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I cannot take photos anymore with this all time favorite camera of mine

First try a complete reset if possible, I can't see it being the memory card but if you have a spare one try that.
One cause could be the sensor or the display itself, I've had faulty ribbon cables  going to the display on TV sets causing similar problems.
I take it they are in the same place on every shot.  What does a good photo show  up like, i.e., one prior to this fault showing? This would point to the sensor or display, since the photo was taken previous to the fault it 'would' eliminate the sensor as this is only used when taking photos and not when 'viewing'.
Pity you couldn't post a sample as it *may* help.

  • Light and dark solid grey vertical lines appear randomly on screen

This has happened about 4 times in the last couple of months, when these light and dark solid grey lines appear on my screen, I have to turn my computer off by holding down the power button and rebooting it, it fixes the problem for the time being. These lines appear randomly, they have appeared when using Photoshop CS6, also when just using the internet, listening to Pandora. 1 out of the 4 times these lines appeared, there was a ticking/clicking noise... I took it to the local computer shop and they did tests on it twice and found nothing.

Run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode a minimum of 3x back to back. If errors appear this confirms a hardware issue that can only be fixed by taking the machine in for repair.

  • Thin vertical lines appearing on screen, since wakeup from sleep mode.

My Mac G5, 2GHz, DVD-R, 1GB DDR RAM, OSX 10.4.10, ATI RADEON X800 XT has recently developed a display issue. On start-up the screen shows vertical lines across the entire screen. The colors of theses lines is varying from green to black, depending of the background color. The lines are appearing from the grey loading screen and when a profile is logged in.
Shutting down and restarting doesn't cure the problem, nor does staring in safe mode nor starting up from an install CD. I also tried re-installing the operating system, but I get the same result. I tried another monitor but I also get the lines on screen. I verified all the cables and that the graphic card is well in place in the pci slot.
If I change the resolution, I also get thoses lines but they change place on screen. Also, if I set the colors level to 256 colors, I get very little single lines but If I set the color level to the highest (36,7 Millions), the lines appears in group of 5+ and are all over the screen.
I tried taking a screenshot using the shortcut cmd-shift-3 and I can see the line in the pictures. Also, if I take a screenshot of a window that is behind the window in the front ( using cmd-shift-4-space ), I dont see the line on the screen shot.
I started to have this problem when my mac was woke up from sleep mode and the problem has persisted since then.
I guess my problem is the graphic card but I would like an external opinion before I got buy another one.
    Thanks

    Any new results?
I'm having the same issue. Looks like this, but at a slight angle and different RGB colors (almost like JPG artifacting).
Started this evening after a cold boot. I just put my X800 XT Mac G5 edition in 2 weeks ago. No real heavy use either, as I've been gone for a week.
Looks to me like bad VRAM (according to TechTool Deluxe). I'm running the AHT now and will hopefully come to a final conclusion soon. I did test my 20" Apple monitor (DVI) with my laptop and there was no problem...so it is definitely the video card. Not sure if the aforementioned ATI ROM extender will fix it or not.
Much luck to all of us who are having this problem.

  • Vertical Lines Appearing

A vertical line (pinkish) appeared on my iMac a couple months ago. Yesterday a second line appeared. Based on what I've read online, more lines could soon appear. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue?

The problem is not in the cable from the video board to the lid.
The most likely cause is delamination of the bond where a flat "flex
cable" (ribbon cable) is bonded to the glass. A next most likely cause
is a failed driver IC on the controller (this is part of the LCD panel
    itself).
Either way, although the problem is theoretically repairable, it's a
repair that is very specialized and is very rarely done, and even if you
can find a place that does it (it's a VERY specialized repair), the cost
will be close to the cost of a new LCD panel. Unfortunately, either
way, we are talking probably $200 or more.
[If it is delamination, there is a chance of a temporary repair by
putting pressure on the exact right point, but it's a point inside the
lid, and usually you won't be able to do it from outside. If you decide
to try and pursue this, be very careful, the inverter inside the lid
    creates lethal high voltage.]
    more info....
A TAB Fault is caused by a connection failure from the TAB that connects the transparent electrode layers to the video driver board of an LCD.
TAB stands for Tape Automated Bonding, which is one of several methods employed in the LCD display manufacturing process to electrically connect hundreds of signal paths going to the rows and columns of electrodes in layer 6 (the transparent electrode layer) in the LCD display to the video ICs on the driver board that drive these electrodes.
If an LCD display is subjected to extreme heat or cold or physical shock, this could cause one or more TAB connections to fail inside the display. This failure requires replacement of the LCD display module itself. If these connections were to fail, the effect would be that an entire row or column of pixels would fail to activate. In the examples below, a horizontal or vertical black line would appear on the display, while the rest of the display would appear normal. The horizontal failure runs from edge to edge; the vertical failure runs from top to bottom.

  • 2 light Vertical lines appeared...

    Hi.
After a few months, 2 vertical lines (multicolour but very light, not easy to be seen or recognised) appeared on my ipad 3 at about 1cm from each side.
At first I was thinking it was a kind of pixel issue close to the long size sides, but I noticed that by rotating my device 90°, the 2 lines appear at the same distance from the other 2 vertical sides, which are the shorter one... So nothing related to pixel or screen but looks like a software issue.
Is anybody experiencing the same issue?
    Thanks, cheers

...correction...as regarding the 90° rotation... They are present at about 1cm from each side, so they are 4 lines in total...

  • Vertical line appearing on some pages in Safari 6 (rMBP)

I've had my MacBook Pro with retina display (OS 10.8.2) for less than 24 hours and noticed vertical black lines appearing on some pages in Safari 6. I pulled a page up in Firefox and the lines did not show up so it must be a Safari issue. Does anyone else notice this? And is there a fix?

Same here. Not sure if it happens with other programms as well, but I see it reguarly with safari. Could this be a safari (software) problem, or should I return my mac (still in warranty)?
Problem is, it happens every now and then, but not often enough (for now) to reproduce the issue on a apple help desk counter....

  • After updating to v. 6.X.X, vertical lines appear around the cursor when typing in webpages such as Gmail and Facebook that persist, obscuring text and other pixels in the webpage. Didn't happen before this update.

I noticed after updating to Firefox version 6.0.1 that vertical lines the same size and shape as the text cursor remain behind on the screen as the cursor moves (either while typing or by using arrow keys). This is most obvious and annoying in text-heavy applications such as when typing in Gmail, Facebook, and work webmail, for instance. (Interestingly, it's not happening now as I type this.)
This is very annoying because these lines obscure parts or even entire letters in words that have been typed. I thought that it might have been a Firefox customized 'skin' I added at the same time as updating, but I reverted to the default view and the problem remains.

  • How to have vertical line appear programmatically between columns?

    Hello,
For a forecasting report, I need to draw a line between "past" columns and "future" columns.  Unfortunately, just turning on a right or left border is not satisfactory (spaces between rows gives a "dashed line" appearance).  An SAP marketing type told us "Oh, you can have a line drawn automatically on your report, based upon some condition".  I've looked and looked, and cannot find any built-in programming objects which would provide for this.  I'm using Crystal Reports XI Rel 2.
    Any ideas?

If you've tried drawing a line, and enabling "extend to bottom of section" and that didn't work...
Would it be true to say that the height of the sections where you want this line to appear within vary as you go through the report?  Do you want the line to appear at a different x-position depending on some value?
I have a fudgy fix or two, but I need to know if you just missed he "extend" trick first!

  • Converting Full Quality HD files to Large-possible? desirable?

Last year I bought a camera that shoots AVCHD files and have been importing them into iMovie using the Full Quality setting. My HD is now maxed out and I'm realizing that I can't afford to keep such big files stored. What I'd like to know is (a) is it possible to convert all my files to the Large size? and (b) would I regret doing so?
    Thanks in advance!

    It all depends.
If you want to keep all the raw footage then you will need to move it to an external HD, since all iMovie does is create a file, "Project" that tells exactly where to go to get everything and plays them, video clip, music, titles etc. together. iMovie cannot ever play that movie if you get rid of any part of it.
you have several options. IF you want to keep the ability to always edit your movies then you must keep everything in those movies. On the other hand if you are done with the non-used raw footage and only want a high Quick Time movie, Go to the "Share" file and "export to QuickTime", pick the "HD" option and iMovie will import it into a QT movie that looks as good as the iMovie original, and never needs the individual parts to play again.
That movie will reside in the iMovie project file for that iMovie (Users -> MOvies ->iMovie Projects. You have to Click on that file with the control key pressed to "see package contents" and then if you want you can move the .mov file somewhere else.
Then you could trash the video that is taking up all the room. The thing is you never really know if you want to edit that film again. If you feel comfortable trashing the clips you don't want but still want to keep the clips you have and the ability to edit the movie again, you can do this 2 ways and save LOT of HD space.
Again, you could have all the data (events) on an external HD, but then that HD has to be attached to see or do anything with a project. I have all my stuff on a laptop and dont like that option.
So assuming your events are stored on your main HD, to free up space on your main HD (but still able to play complete projects from the main HD) you have 2 options and they do different things.
If you pick an event (click on it) then go to File Menu -> "Move event to trash" it will give you an option to
"Delete" which deletes (to trash) the entire event (essentially destroys project), or "Delete Unused" which moves to the trash all the parts of each and every clip (within that Event) that is not in any project.
The other option is to choose (doesn't matter what you choose first here) File menu -> "Space Saver"
and choosing that ("Reject and review") will move ANY clip in ANY event that is not used, into the trash, but leaves the clips you are using alone. The difference here is that, say you use 50% of a given clip from an event in a project, "delete unused" deletes the other 50% (while also deleting any clips that you use 0% of in the project), while "Space saver" leaves the 50% of the clip not used alone, leaving any used clip intact no matter how much of that clip is in a project, and only deletes (trash) clips in which there is nothing used for a project
The advantage of Delete unused is that really trashes everything that you arent using (btw you have go through that process for every event individually) and frees up the most space. The advantage of "Space saver" is that if you decide you want a second or two more from that clip in your project, it is still there. but then it frees up less space.
It kinda depends on how you film and how much film you use. I film my kid's games and a game (event) may have 45 clips, start and stop camera each is a clip. I may use 10 of those clips for a highlight film. If i used all of the clips, even 1/100th of each clip, then Space saver would not delete anything. but since I use , eg, only 10 of the clips, Space saver really opens up space on my harddrive. I used to use "Delete unused" which opend up even more room, but then if I want to go back and use more of each clip into the project, I cannot because it is gone forever from my HD.
    write back if confused.
