Vertical lines of "numbers" and screen distortion upon waking from sleep
Hi,
I'm posting this for my friend who has a G5 iMac (the first model on the market, about a year and a half old).
Suddenly, he's having a bizarre problem with it. Intermittently, when he wakes the machine from sleep, either immediately, or after several minutes, the screen will go all "double" or fuzzy on him, and then vertical lines of what look like "numbers" (almost like the famous "Matrix" effect) appear on the screen. Only a hard, power button reset will fix it. He called AppleCare, and they had him zap the PRAM, which didn't fix it. Now they say that because the problem is intermittent, there's nothing they can do for now.
Any ideas???
Thanks,
Steve
Hi all,
Bouj here.. I must say I am amazed at the amount of conversation this post has generated ..
I wanted to put out a few questions for those of us with iMac G5's, really it's a symptom I have noticed with both of the G5's that failed ..
If enabled, does the feature in Power option to dim the screen work reliably ?
I looked back at when the problems with both machines started and it was soon after the dimming feature just stopped working ...even after PRAM, SMU and Open firmware resets didn't do the trick after a fresh install of OS X 10.4.x
Obviously this is a power feature controlled by the logic board and both of my machines had logic board failures ...
If anyone can post their experiences and if they have notices this it may help others or even provide a warning sign for others ...
Bouj

Black screen upon waking from sleep
Hello,
I have an intermittent problem with waking my entry-level MBP from sleep; on some occasions, the screen remains black instead of the system waking up and displaying the Finder.
Recently, upon waking from sleep, the authentication dialog displayed, I typed my password and pressed return, the dialog dismissed, the screen remained black, and the wait cursor displayed without spinning.
To recover, I needed to force power down and cold reboot.
system.log (in Console) contained the following entry at the time of the crash.
Aug 14 07:39:51 BF-H-MBP kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0xd = GR: SW Notify ErrorAug 14 07:39:51 BF-H-MBP kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0xd = GR: SW Notify Error
The entries surrounding the one above were as follows (the next to last one evidently was the final entry before the forced power down).

Can someone diagnose the problem based upon the above Console entries?
Thanks in advance!Hi,
Thanks for taking time to post.
My question is different than the one your posting answers.
My question is, what is the diagnosis of the problem based upon the Console log entries that I've posted (rather than "How do I recover from the black screen?")?
Cheers! -
Dark screen remains after waking from sleep mode
Whilst using Safari Version 3.1.2, Mac OS 10.4.11 on my Powerbook G4 (aluminum, 1.5 ghz), my screen remains dark upon waking from sleep mode. Trying to increase screen brightness is ineffectual for some reason likely related to this problem. My only workaround is to force shutdown and restart. Any ideas about a solution would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Gary,
This behavior is not a Safari issue but system related.
Close all applications an run in utilities> disc repair permissions.
After you done reboot an see what happens when your Mac gets to sleep mode again. This time don't open any applications to test it. Just leave it showing your desktop.
Post back with the results ...

Macbook pro screen dims after waking from sleep?
Does anyone know why my macbook pro screen dims when waking from sleep or waking from my screen saver? I can't get it to stop doing this. Thanks.
It sounds like I have the same thing happening. It's more like the colors are washed out, like there is less contrast. I have a hot corner set up for my screen saver. Once I activate the screen saver for a second and then deactivate it, the Macbook screen goes back to normal. I have a 30" Samsung 305T monitor set up as a second (main) screen for when I'm working at home, which is most of the time. I haven't had it unplugged from the Macbook since this started, so I don't know if it happens by itself. I do know that the Samsung looks fine when waking up from the screen saver at the same time.
I tried to find others with this problem in this forum, but got tired of looking through all the other posts that had nothing to do with this problem.
Can anyone help us? -
User Name Upon Waking from Sleep
Hey guys,
We're given the choice of entering a password upon waking from sleep. I kinda want to take it one step further and have the user name erased too so that people have to enter the user name and the password upon the computer waking. Does anyone know how to do this or if it's even possible?
Thanks for any help. The only way I can think of would be to log out rather than just put it to sleep or let it go to sleep. However, if you have a good secure password there really isn't too much reason to require the additional step.
There may be a way to do it but I can't think of one. -
Bizarre psychedelic display upon waking from sleep
does this mean a logic board failure is imminent? the screen showed nothing but a bizarre, seemingly random collection of pixels in all colors - almost like multicolored tv 'snow.'
I ran the hardware test disk, and it said the logic board 'passed,' but i'm not sure how it can test whether or not it's seated correctly.
in any case, i've also been experiencing other display issues (black screen, typically), most commonly when waking from sleep.
this is my wife's computer, by the way, and it's a desktop replacement - no travel, so it hasn't been abused at all.Does an attached external display show the same effects
as the internal one? The supplied adapter should allow
a second display to mirror the internal one, and this may
help troubleshoot the extent of the hardware failure. -
Sluggish upon waking from sleep
when I wake my Mac Book Pro from sleep, my mouse reacts strangely (erratically, sluggishly, etc) for a good 30 seconds. Anyone experience anything similar? Thanks.
Not sure if you've fixed this issue already, but are you using the iStat Pro widget by any chance? I was experiencing the exact same problem (erratic mouse behaviour after waking from sleep), and it was resolved when I removed the iStat Pro widget.
Not to cast aspersions on this particular widget or anything, but removing it seemed to resolve the issue for me. -
Palette positions upon waking from sleep in Leopard
Using a 2nd monitor for all my palettes and finally upgraded to Leopard a couple of weeks ago, and whenever the machine wakes from Sleep, all my palettes in all Adobe apps (IL, ID & PS) get stacked on each other on the edge of the 2nd monitor. My saved workspace layout is checked like it is still active also. I just have to re-select the saved workspace and everything goes to normal, but it's annoying. I'm sure this is an Apple issue, much like the ID hide issue, but does anybody know of a fix?
@Jeremy: Sleep and palette monitors have always been problematic. I have heard massive amounts of anger related to issues with that combination ever since OS 7.
Your best bet is to make sure you have a custom workspace and possibly a hot key assigned to it. Whether this problem is Adobe's or Apple's is anyone's guess, which is going to make it hard to get someone to fix it too...
@Susan: Try the Reset Panels command under the Workspace menu first. If that doesn't work, try resetting your InDesign prefs completely by holding down cmd-opt-shift-control when you launch it. -
Faded screen and white bars when waking from sleep on mac mini
I just bought a new mac mini. It is the late 2012 version with Mavericks.
When I wake it from sleep, my screen is blurred out and there is a row of little white bars at the bottom for probably 10 seconds before the full screen comes on.
Why is it doing this? Is that normal?
ThanksLate-model Macs are configured to enter standby after four hours in sleep while on AC power, in order to comply with a directive of the European Union.
You have three choices. One is to do nothing. Use the machine as designed. That's what I recommend.
The second choice is to disable Power Nap in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences. Uncheck the box marked Enable Power Nap... in each of the tabs. You won't get the wake delay anymore, but you won't get any of the features of Power Nap either.
The third choice is to increase the delay before standby mode is triggered, or to disable standby mode completely. This is an unsupported option and you're on your own as to the consequences. If you choose to go this route, proceed as below. These instructions are for advanced users only.
Back up all data before making any changes.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Drag across the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
sudo pmset –a standbydelay
Don't copy the blank space at the end of the line.
Launch the Terminal application.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. Press the space bar, then type the delay you want, in seconds. For example, if you want to change the standby delay from the default one hour to eight hours, enter 28800. Don't put commas or other punctuation marks in the number. To disable standby, enter 0 (zero.)
When the command is complete, press return. You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. After running it, quit Terminal. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
To disable standby on AC power, enter this command:
sudo pmset autopoweroff 0
and to revert to the default state,
sudo pmset autopoweroff 1 -
Chome (and other apps) quit unexpectedly upon waking from sleep
When I wake my computer from sleep, Google Chrome usually quits with a 'Google Chrome quit unexpectedly' error message (happens with other apps too but mostly Chrome). Any ideas? Crash log is as follows; I apologise for the wall of text but I can't see a way to mark this as code/other way to hide it all! :-)

6 libc++abi.dylib@Jeremy: Sleep and palette monitors have always been problematic.
Fingerprint Reader not working upon waking from sleep for windows login
Hello,
I have a brand new T540P with a Validity fingerprint reader.
Rougly 80% of the time, the Fingerprint reader is unresponsive at the windows login screen after waking the computer from sleep. It works 100% of the time when booting from an off position, however. Once logged in, it also works 100% of the time. The issue only arises when logging into windows.
Things I have tried
-uninstalling/installing device in device manager and finger print manager pro software
-setting fingerprints through both fingerprint manager pro software (lenovo) OR through the built in windows fingerprint control panel options
-disabling "allow windows to turn off this device to save power" in device manager.
I should note as well that I have another T540P that I ordered as a replacement. Both models experience the same issue.
Is this a platform wide issue affecting all T540P models? This is frusterating.
Solved!

Your report is the first we have ever heard of this issue on T/W. It does not happen on my T/W systems here (with or without 30 Day Standby enabled). The other reports I heard of this problem came from X240.
I just want to confirm with you - the problem happens after coming out of Sleep (and not Hibernate), right?
Can you tell me exactly what you are doing? e.g.
1. Use the computer normally (is AC attached or not?)
2. Close the lid - the computer goes to sleep (or do you go to sleep some other way?)
3. Open the lid 2 hours later (or how long)?
4. are you using a dock?
The more info you can provide, the better. Thanks for your help.
Also please let me know what BIOS version you have. -
No recognition of external LED projectors upon waking from sleep.
For many, many years, I simply plugged my MBP while it was asleep, turned on the projector, woke the computer from sleep, and the computer would recognize the projector (and the projector would recognize the computer...). This worked in any of the classrooms.
Since "upgrading" to Mavericks, this sequence does not work. The computer wakes, but does not recognize the projector. The projector does not "see" the computer. The only way I get them to communicate is to restart the computer. This has been taking up valuable lecture time at the beginning of every class. Upon restart and opening up Keynote, the files I had open don't automatically come up - i.e., I have to reopen those files from the finder as if they had not been open previously.
I've tried this in three different lecture rooms, each of which gave me no troubles before. The only difference is Mavericks. Any help?Of course I meant VGA, not LED. Sorry!

Three finger swipe disappears upon waking from sleep. How do I get it back?
I'm running Mountain Lion (10.8.1) and when my 17 inch MBP wakes from sleep, the three finger swipe between full screen pages is gone. Also, Mission Control is inoperative. Any ideas as to what's causing this and how I get the functions back short of rebooting?
Yes, it is selected. I found another similar thread that suggested 'killall Dock' as a way to get the gesture back. That seems to work. I now have the gesture and Mission Control back working. I know how to fix the problem the next time it shows up.
Hopefully it will be addressed in a future update of Mountain Lion. -
Changing the wallpaper upon waking from sleep glitches the translucent menu bar.
Hi.
This is a minor bug, but it's one that I'd still like to see fixed simply because I'm that picky
The problem, as the title states, is that I have my desktop background settings set to randomly change to another one of my wallpapers every hour and (I don't believe it does it when it changes while the computer is awake) when I wake my computer from sleep, during which time an hour has passed, the background changes to a different wallpaper, but the translucent menu bar still shows the top of the wallpaper that was just up.
My machine is a 2011 iMac. Thanks! If it's an encrypted network one thing that can work, try this, please ignore the exact symptoms and connection and Hardware types, it's worked for many others than the stated...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304482
Otherwise you might use one of these two lines in Terminal to try to re-establish the connection after sleep...
sudo ipconfig set en1 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en1 DHCP
sudo ifconfig en1 down;sudo ifconfig en1 up -
MacPro Freezes upon waking from sleep
I have had my macpro for almost a year and have never had this problem. I have not connected any new peripherals to it or done anything new that I can think of. I have tried sleep and wake with them all disconnected, but still no luck.
Upon waking the computer comes back to life, however, the cursor does not move, and key commands also will not work. Only way to get it back to life is a hard restart. This began only a week ago, and was prior to the newest EFI Firmware update.
Is power consumption related to this possibly? Not enough juice to get her back online? or do I need to get her some coffee? If it has too much equipment on the same circuit it can be a problem.
The freeze alone is enough to result in a corrupt directory.
Freezes on wake from sleep can be as simple as a bad USB cable.
