Vertical Photos Sideways In Finder

I have a Canon PowerShot S5. The orientation of the camera is saved in the EXIF data, so any vertical photo imported is imported right-side up. (I use Image Capture to import the photos; I don't use iPhoto.) Vertical photos are vertical in Preview, as well as the thumbnails in Finder. However, when I preview the photo in an Open File dialog box, the photo is displayed vertically for a split second, then is shifted sideways. Here is a screenshot:
http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/423/screenshot3sz6.png
When I open the file, the photo is then displayed sideways instead of vertically. For example, I've been trying to add photos to the vCards in Calendar. However, because of this issue, every time I open a vertical photo, it is displayed sideways, making it impossible to add a photo to a vCard.
I have never experienced this problem until this week, after I imported some photos from a friend's Casio digital camera. The same is happening with the photos taken with the Casio:

I was wondering what I can do in order to have the photos orientated correctly? I've racked my brain and come up with nothing.
Thanks.

Help...anyone??

  • No icons for vertical photos??

I have over 1000 pictures from a trip I recently went on and some of them, naturally were taken with the camera sideways which means that they have to be spun in Preview or iPhoto to be viewed.
Now whenever I look at my photos in the Finder all the ones I spun to vertical show as the jpg icon, that is I don't see a thumbnail of the actual picture. Is there any way to correct this so my vertical photos are visible as well?
So far all I've been able to do is use column view and the preview dropdown.
I also have the same problem with the desktop; many pictures dragged and dropped onto the desktop do not show up as thumbnails but as simple picture icons.

There's a wonderful, and FREE program that will create custom icons for all graphic files:

    VitaminSee should solve the problem.

  • Portrait (vertical) photos blurry in iPhoto (except when rotated landscape)

In iPhoto '09 with my Canon G11, all portrait (vertical) photos appear blurry. When these same photos are viewed in Preview or rotated to lie on their side in iPhoto however they are fine. This is a huge problem as I just got back from a long trip where I deleted all blurry vertical photos for the first few weeks thinking it was a problem with my camera (the lens has a scratch on it that I believed might be affecting focus on vertical shots) until I did some testing and realised it was iPhoto that was at fault and the photos were perfectly fine.
Is there any way to get iPhoto to display those photos correctly (I have tried various full screen and zooming modes to no avail, and there seems to be no smoothing setting in iPhoto preferences) so that I can at least look at them and use them in a slideshow, without having to open every single vertical photo separately in another editor?

I've just discovered a similar issue, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with vertical or horizontal. At least it is still happening when I turn photos sideways.
    To be very clear here
    1) This is not a thumbnail issue, these are the original files taken from my camera minutes ago.
    2) This is not initial blurriness while the photo loads.
    3) I only notice it in full screen (edit) mode because it's actually quite subtle.
    4) Photos display correctly (sharp) when you zoom in a little, but return to blurry when you zoom back out.
    5) Appears to be random, with one nearly identical shot being crisp and the next appears blurry, but the affect seems to be specific to particular images (e.g. it doesn't come and go randomly regardless of which pictures you happen to be looking at. If a photo is blurry, it will stay that way even if you've closed iPhoto and reopened it).
    6) Photos are from a Nikon D5000
Any suggestions? This is a ridiculous hassle as the OP mentioned, and is completely unacceptable in any photo editing/browsing software.

  • Can't import vertical photos, they appear black

    Hi,
    I'm using Iphoto 9.2.1 with lion 10.7.2.
I can't import any vertical photos on iphoto. Instead, I have a black icon and all the files weight 329 ko. They appear perfectly normal on my desktop, and if I rotate to have them horizontal on my desktop, I can import them on iphoto, they appear normally (but horizontal, of course).
I have no problem with the same files on another computer with an older version of iphoto.
    Has anyone a solution?
I don't want to change manually all my vertical photos to horizontal and then to vertical for the rest of my computer's lifetime!
    thank you!

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
Now you can find your Home/Library/Preferences folder and the iPhoto preference file.

  • Vertical Photos?? Double copies!?

I've imported a few vertical photos from my camera into Iphoto. It automatically makes duplicates of these photos in the modified folders - which annoys me because it's a waste of space. The originals of the photos are displayed as vertical too either when viewed by iPhoto or Preview etc.. When I "revert to original", iPhoto automatically re-creates the duplicate again! How can I stop this behavior? Is this normal? Can't it just display my original as vertical when I click on it without making a modified duplicate??

However, wouldn't my photo then appear normal (i.e. sideways) in the original, but only vertical in the modified version?
Depends on how you view it - preview, and probably most other viewers, follow the camera's instruction and rotate the impage to display it - if you have a viewer that does not then you will see it un-rotated.
And how stupid is it that when I select, "revert to original", it continues to make the modified version. The program should be smart enough to just either know that's what I want, or ask, don't you think?
I don't think so - I like knowing that my "ORIGINAL" is ALWAYS preserved
In any case this forum is NOT to discuss Apple policies - forbidden by the terms of use. Is is strictly a user forum to provide assistance in what is implemented. To provide your ideas to Apple go to the iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback - this is NOT the place to do that. The users here can, sometimes, explain to you how thing work based on their personal experience and can, sometimes, help you with how to use the software based on their personal experience and can, sometimes, help with workaround they have discovered for things that do not work the way you would like. But the users here can not change anything and can not speculate on Apple decisions (per the terms of use)

  • IPhoto 6 trouble EXPORTING VERTICAL photos; Unable to create/Users/...

I've been trying everything I can think of to export all of my photos to Finder folders and then to albums on a website - either by selecting and dragging to the folder OR by exporting. The horizontal photos export easily, but the VERTICAL photos will not move out of iPhoto. The message that pops up is: "Exporting - Unable to create/Users/my name/place tp which I'd like to export." Nor will the VERTICAL photos enlarge/display when I double click on them in iPhoto - the window that comes up has a gray square with an exclamation mark in it. Since my problem only ocurrs with VERTICAL photos, it seems to be different than the recently posted question about the same message. I did verify my HD disk. My computer savvy is limited, so detailed help is needed! Thanks!

Check them all and leave them checked. The "!" problem can also occur if iPhoto is interrupted while writing to its database file, Library6.iPhoto. See the tip at the end of my signature. It can help you recover from the "!" problem and get your library back to where it was at the time of the last backup.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Vertical photos won't show

I imported all my pictures into iPhoto and when I watch them in full screen size or any other way, the vertical photos don't appear, just a gray screen and a question mark..
Does anyone know this problem or can anyone tell me what can fix this because it took me half a day to organize all off my vacation photos so yeah, it ***** that they don't show

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.
Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Be sure and include the option to check and repair permissions in the Library.

  • Photo folders in Finder disappeared

My photo folders in Finder from 6/07 to present disappeared after a crash and a rebuild. The library reverted to the last time I crashed and rebuilt which was in May. I've tried finding .jpgs over 30kb using Finder,I tried the File Salvage program, nothing. Just boom gone. iPhoto doesn't see them, presumably cuz they aren't there. I'm using iPhoto 5.04. Oh yeah, I did Disk First Aid from the boot disk as well. Any ideas? Could my database before the (most recent) crash be in the Mac bowels somewhere since apparently my rebuilt db from 5/07 was?

  • Vertical Photos are cropped

I am trying to prepare my first digital presentation using Keynote and I have sized the photos to 1000 pixels on the long side. When reviewing my slides, the horizontal images look great, but the vertical are cropped at the top and bottom (almost a square) How do I fit the verticals into the presentation?
    Thanks in advance!
    J. Paul

    Hi J-Paul,
click on the image and see if it is masked, even if you did not apply the mask yourself if it is a place holder it is a mask of sorts. When clicking on the image if the image is masked a little semi-transparent menu appears on or near the image that controls the size of the image you can also move the photo around in the mask.
I hope that is it because there is no other vertical control as you describe in the other application.
You may also try to add a slide with a vertical photo already planned in and move your picture there, arrange it the way you want and see if it works. A cut and past would quickly solve the problem.

  • All my photos have been imported to iPhoto library. Is it safe therefore to delete all photos in the Finder pictures folder? It seems crazy to have them duplicated (all are backed up externally). And are they full size images in iPhoto?

All my photos have been imported to iPhoto library. Is it safe therefore to delete all photos in the finder picture folder? It seems crazy to have them dupllcated ( all are backed up anyway). And are they the full sized images stored in iPhoto?

Assuming you have iPhoto set to the Default setting, then yes, your full sized photos are copied into the iPhoto Library and so you can delete your own stored in the Finder.
Easiest way to check:  Select a photo in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Is it stored within the iPhoto Library? You can tell easily in the Finder's column view.
    As an FYI:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Vertical photos distorted in slide show

I have 'scale photos to screen' turned off during slide show. Still, some vertical photos in my slide show, but not all, appear distorted as if they were horizontal; i.e. the horizontal dimension is stretched. When I preview the same photo, it 'reloads' and then, when I continue the slide show with that photo, it appears with the correct vertical/horizontal ratio and looks right. The photos had been rotated to be upright after import. - Anyone have any idea what's going on? I can't for the life of me figure out what causes this. I have to go through all my vertical photos and preview them, one by one, before running the slide show to avoid that some vertical slides appear distorted.

No, video for viewing on TV is interlaced... it is shot with two fields, each shot at slightly different times, the two interlaced fields make up a frame. It is the time difference between when each frame was shot that gives the "jaggy" lines. A TV knows how to handle these fields whereas a computer monitor does not.

  • All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

Help us to help you: There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • Iphoto slideshow stretching vertical photos

ARGH! I hope someone can help me. I'm creating a slideshow for my daughter's bday and it has about 285 photos in it currently, a good mix of horizontal and vertical. There are about 20 vertical photos that are appearing stretched horizontally when viewed in slideshow mode. There are many more verticals that this is not happening to.
I edited (rotated) them in Photoshop and saved them, as I did for every vertical photo in the album. They are not rotated in iphoto. When I do rotate them in iphoto (just for troubleshooting), they are still stretched, just now rotated incorrectly.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening, especially to SOME and not ALL?
    Thanks in advance!

    Which version of iPhoto?
I've run into unexpected things when editing iPhotos w something external to iPhoto. I think the problem has to do with the way iPhoto stores photos - basically an original and then one with any changes made to it.
Try this: Put a copy of all of your Photoshop-edited photos in a folder on your hard drive outside of iPhoto. Then delete the problemmatic vertical photos from your iPhoto Library.
Then import your Photoshop edited vertical photos as if they wer enew photos.

  • Vertical Photos in Book

I am attempting to create a book with a lot of vertical photos. The layout pages are almost all for horizontal photos and the vertical photos are not properly proportioned. Are there pages I'm missing with more layouts for vertical photos or is there a way of making my own layout pages, other than blank.

Liz Castro has produced samples of all of the layouts for all of the themes for iPhoto books making it easy to scan the possibilities -- http://www.lizcastro.com/iphotobookthemes/
Note that in some layouts when you place a portrait photo in a landscape frame the frame switches orientation and in some it just crops the photo - http://www.lizcastro.com/iphotobookthemes/pmwiki.php?n=Main.OriginalOrientation
If you photos are not standard point and shoot photos in a 4:3 ratio they will be cropped since all of the book frames are 4:3 - you can right click on a photo and choose fit to frame to avoid cropping
there is not currently any way to customize pages in iPhoto -- you can generate pages in MS Word, pages, pagermaker, InDesign, etc and do a print to PDF using the send PDF to iPhoto option to create a custom page - see Old Toad's tutorial #19 for details - http://toadstutorials.info/

  • Cannot see the actual photo file in Finder once loaded onto iPhoto08??

GOod evening to all knowledgeable people,
Probably a stupid question..I read previous posts in quest of a similar lost querry but couldn't find, therefore here I am.
Now that I upgraded to iLife08, when I transfer my photos onto iPhoto the only way that allows me to see the actual file is if I right click on an image in the iPhoto Library and it pops up a new Finder window.
But when I go manually and look around in the Photos menu it doesn't actually display the content of the iPhoto Library. Surely this is wrong as in the previous version I could just go and see each files without passing going through iPhoto?
    Anyone with an answer?
    Thanks
    Greg.

I read the messages on Hurrocain's post and I think it answers my question...:)
So with the new iPhoto08 we cannot access photos through the finder? and have to export the desired files onto the desktop for instead? not that great in terms of flexibility...:(
