Vertical Picture-in-Picture with imovie '11

I'm trying to add a verticle photo via PiP but can't figure out how to show the whole photo without using "fit" which results in black bars on both sides of the photo. I don't want to rotate the photo nor do I want ken burns movement. I just want to add a verticle picture to my imovie project with the typical 16:9 ratio. Is this possible and if so, how do I do it?

The quick answer is that you can't do this. However, Karsten Schlüter has come up with a solution, which he describes in this post.

  • Pictures with iMovie

im having trouble with transferring pictures from iphoto to imovie...
there is the option that i can import photos from camera files, but i cant select the iphoto
    library from there...
    Any solutions for this?
    Thanks!

In iMovie '11 at the far right of the centre toolbar are several icons. Click on the one shaped like a camera to reveal the Photo Browser (it will slide into position). Now you can navigate within this browser to your iPhoto photos (all the thumbnails will appear). Drag photos into your project (not into an Event) directly from the Photo Browser.

  • Can I make a Picture-In-Picture movie with iMovie?

Can you make a picture-in-picture using imovie? If so, how do I do it? If not, what program would I need to accomplish this task? Thanks for the help!

I don't know whether this can be done in iMovie 08, but having been on an Apple one to one tutorial this morning, I can say 100% that picture-in-picture is easily achievable in Final Cut Express 4, only because we broached on this subject and the tutor showed me how easily it could be done.

  • Picture in Picture with QT Pro

I just got QT pro. I just dont know what it's good for!

I just got QT pro. I just dont know what it's good for!
Its uses are many and varied -- depending on the skill and imagination of the user.
I was told that I would be able to put 2 to 3 clips in the same frame for my imovies.
If you "add" separate video tracks of different size and offset their display in the player with the smaller over the larger, then you can create a "picture-in-picture" effect. Alternately, if multiple tracks of similar sized are "added" to a single player, then they can be offset vertically, horizontally, or in both directions to create a row, column, or matrix of views. On the other hand, clips can be pasted or joined to the same trace to create a sequentially ordered display of multiple clips. Here is an example clips converted using different applications/setting and then arranged in a single player so they can be compared on a frame-to-frame basis.

  • IMovie Crop picture-in-picture & feature requests

I love the new iMovie because it is so fast. I wish it had a few more features though. Maybe it does and I don't know where to look...
    1. cut-out picture after you insert picture-in-picture. It seems to let you cut-out crop a picture when you insert a picture doing green-screen which is great! but when you select picture-in-picture overlay, you are stuck either with the full size video or fully cropped version. For instance, if you are inserting a person shot on white background into a full white screen, you can't cut-crop out studio junk that are on the side of the picture without cropping the whole thing closer - loosing resolution.
    2. sharpen video. the color correction seems quite good but how come you can't sharpen video a little?
    3. cut and paste video sections INCLUDING title and dissolves.

  • IMovie, PNG, Picture in Picture

I saw a great article on using PNG files to create transparent logos that you can include as a picture-in-picture. No matter what I do, I always end up with a black background instead of a transparent background. I've used both CMYK and RGB PNG images, and I have the same problem. I exported it as a PNG straight from the Illustrator file; I've tried opening that in Photoshop CS4 and converting it to a PNG8 file. No luck either way. The problem seems to be when it is imported to iPhoto, as that is when the background goes from transparent to black. But, I don't know another way to import a still photo to iMovie. Any help would be appreciated.

I appreciate this is a really old post, but having just experienced the same problem myself this afternoon (despite never having had a problem in the past with around 50 previous projects!) I thought I would post the solution I got to work.
Despite saving the image I wanted to use as a .png file with a transparent background, as soon as I imported it into iMovie and clicked the fill option (so that all of the image would appear), the black background reappeared. Doing a little research on the Internet, I discovered this was unavoidable because of how iMovie interprets the 'fit' and 'crop' commands, despite having a play with some of the settings within the 'Project Properties' window. I also tried re-sizing the water mark as suggested by someone on YouTube to match the 'picture in picture' box within iMovie, which is 175 x 85px but still no good! The image was also really poor quality, despite saving it using hi-res settings.
After tearing my hair out for the best part of 2.5 hours, I finally found a solution! The video I was working on had been recorded in HD and I work on a 16:9 wide screen (Mac book Pro 17" with retina display). The only way I could get my .png water marks to display correctly (without the black background) was to start with a blank canvas (using PS CS3) with the same dimensions (I used 1920 x 1080 and not 1440 x 990). Upon saving each file as a 24 bit .png and dropping it into iMovie using the 'picture in picture' option, they displayed correctly. If the image was too small because of it being placed on such a large background, I simply added the image, then cropped the background to suit.
I've never had to mess around with water marks like this before, but it seemed to do the trick???

  • Picture in Picture - does it work with maps?

    Hi,
Okay, so I get that iMovie is basically a completely gimped, Fisher Price movie editor and I should probably go get something better but...
I'd like to have an animated map that doesn't take up the whole screen. However, it doesn't let me use the clip as a PiP clip, or indeed put any other video over it as PiP. Is this just one of the many obvious things iMovie should do but doesn't?
Secondly, speaking of PiP, is it possible to fade a PiP in or does it have to hard cut in and out?
Finally, is it possible to have two clips superimposed together? I'm thinking, I could have the map in the background fullscreen and super a second clip over it at about 50% also fill screen.
I suspect none of these things are possible in the Fisher Price world of iMovie and to an extent that's fine as I only want to throw something together and have no desire to do everything from scratch in something like FCP where I'd have to build animated maps myself.

I suspect none of these things are possible
    Actually, they are possible.
What I would do is first create your Map Sequence cut to time and with the fades you desire.
Then Share it add the resulting clip to your project just as you would any other clip you're using for picture-in-picture.

  • QuickTime shortens time of pictures playback created in iMovie ...

    Hi,
I exported 150 pictures from iPhoto to iMovie. Each pictures is timed to 4 seconds.
When finished, I exported the complete movie to QuickTime 7.1.3. When played from QT, almost 1 out of 2 pictures cuts the time to 1 or to 2 seconds instead of playing it for 4 seconds. Somebody as a clue ?? Maybe a configuration to apply ??
    Robert

I got the movie into FCP a couple of different ways, hearing no audio the first way then trying to bring it in another way to see if it gave me audio. First I imported the QT movie that resulted from my iMovie project. I found it in my external drive where I had it stored, and I imported it.
When I detected a problem, I undid that and opened Finder, selected the external drive, found my movie and dragged the icon into my bin.
In either case, when I opened it in the canvas, it played -- video only. When I dragged it into the timeline, it separated the media into one channel of video and two channels of audio. It would play -- video only. There was a red render bar that I eliminated by rendering all, to no effect for recovering audio, and then by rendering 'audio only,' which also didn't work.
I then tried dragging in a second iMovie QT project to see if the same problem existed. It did. With that project, however, responding to the red render bar by hitting 'render all' gave me a window saying it would take two hours. Why that wasn't the case for the other movie, I don't know. Perhaps it's the only one that might have worked, should I have had two hours to wait. It freaked me out a little 'cuz it didn't even appear to start working on the render after several moments of watching my cursor turn into a rainbow on and off. So I just closed it out and posted my question.

  • Pictures stops sequencing in iMovie Timelapse

    Hi
I have a problem trying to make a timelapse with iMovie. I have read somewhere else that this problem is quite common but I can't find any solution to it..
I have loaded the photos to use into iPhoto and from there into iMovie who has made thumbnails also.
The same problem occured when I tried to make some slideshows of pictures earlier in iMovie, then I had rather long duration on each picture; 4 seconds. I have made another timelapse earlier with no problem. But now it's just giving me a serious headace and editing movies and timelapses are a little of the reason I bought this computer.
What happens is that 2/3 down in the timelapse the pictures stop sequencing, the same picture just re-occur all the time. And down at the line where you edit the pictures, duration etc it just shows only the last picture supposed to be in the time lapse.
This is a bug, error in iMovie?
    Thank you for any support

I think you might find some good suggestions on this Discussion Thread:

  • Picture in Picture Overlay - Edges of image cut off - iMovie 09

If I use PIP and don't fill the whole screen with the picture why does my overlayed picture have to have the same aspect ratio as the video?  Is there a way to display the whole picture no matter what the aspect ratio?
    Thanks,
    Ruth

    Hi RuthEllen63,
The video tutorial below shows you how to create the Picture-in-Picture effect in iMovie '09:
You should be able to add a picture or video regardless of it's aspect ratio and adjust as needed.

  • How do I do picture-in-picture in iMovie version 10.0.1

I have read various things like "drag the clip on top of another clip and a pop up will appear with picture-in-picture" and "it's in the adjust tab in the top corner."
Can someone please tell me how to do picture in picture in this new version of iMovie? I'm trying to do four boxes in the screen.

Do you mean you want a clip to have 4 simultaneous picture in pictures?  iMovie 10 only lets you have one at any one time (same as iMovie 9).
You drag the still or clip that you want as the picture in picture from the  event to the timeline and place above where you want it to appear. A "+" sign will appear and it will stick there.  Click on it to select, click on Adjust and above the leftmost menu above the viewer window will show "Cutaway" (the default option).  Click on this and you will see "Picture in picture" as the lowermost option.   You can size and position it in the viewer window.

  • Cannot import pictures from iPhoto into iMovie!

When I try to upload my JPEG pictures from iPhoto, I can successfully drag them into the storyboard, but they all show up as the same picture (the picture right before all of them). When I try to drag them into the workspace below the storyboard, I see the number of them (doesn't matter how many) in a red circle, not allowing me to drag them over from the browser.
I don't know what I am doing wrong. Can anyone help out with this?

Open the photo Browser in iMovie. Find your Album. Drag the icon for your Album into the iMovie Project.

  • Pops up picture collage vid with transitions

how can i make picture in picture pops up with transitions after i rotate the pictue, i want to make kinda picture collage with transitions help me :/

You can create your PiP clips as secondary storylines. You can add Transitions to those (a secondary storyline will automatically be created as soon as you add a transition to two adjacent connected clips anyway) Once created, select all the clips in the secondary storyline and Scale them down and position them where you want them. You won't have access to the precision editor for the transitions, but you can adjust the handles by dragging the vertical hashmark icons along the left and right top edge of the transition, then resize the transition in the normal way (if you need to increase the lengths.)
The green side adjusts the handle of the beginning of the "outgoing clip" and the red side adjusts the handle of the end of the "incoming clip."
I also made this "title" effect for PiP:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0kyqSJTa98
    It's free...
It allows you to switch whatever is playing in the storyline as the PiP, for whatever you load into the drop zone.

  • IMovie 11 footage freezing when picture-in-picture applied

I have an iMovie project. and have a clip in the project. I take a picture, saved to my "Downloads" folder, drag it into the iMovie project browser, on to the clip in the project, and click on the "Picture-in-Picture" setting. It applies the effect, but when I go back a few seconds and let the clip play, when it gets to the part where the effect starts, the footage freezes. The sound continues, but the clip stops moving, and there is no effect. The clip resumes playing after the effect should have ended. When I scroll over the clip with the effect, it plays in the window, and when I put the cursor over part of the "effected" clip, it plays in the browser when I hit the space bar. But it will not play if you start it playing before the "effected" clip, in the project window or with the project finalized/exported out of iMovie. Any thoughts? This is really starting to annoy me. It only happens with SOME pictures-over-clips too, by the way.

See this post for instructions for how to get a still frame. Once you have it, it is easy to use it as a PIP.
