Vertical stripes after latest Security Update 2008-004 for OS X Tiger

Hi there,
I'm experiencing vertical stripes and color issues on my PB G4 17 inch screen after the security update 2008-004.
Funny thing is, a screenshot looks fine.
I already resetted PRAM and NVRAM. Didn't help.
Does anyone know a solution?
Thanks,
Phil

It's probably got nothing to do with the upgrade.
I guess your computer is about 15-20 months old and the serial number starts with W84 or W85.
This is obviously a common problem among these serial numbers, and it starts after about 15 months.
I've got a mint PBG4 17, that's NEVER left the house. Just turned it in on AppleCare repair (32 days left, phew) for this problem.
This number series is assembled in Shanghai in 2005.

  • IMac G5 won't completely start up after failed Security Update 2009-004

    The problem:
Last night I attempted to run the latest Security Update (2009-004) on my 2nd Gen iMac G5. The update did not reach completion and I received an error message saying it had been moved to the trash. I attempted to empty the trash and start again. At that point, the trash would not empty, the computer would not shut down, and finder would not relaunch. I had to use the power button to shut it down--have not been able to complete the start up again since. The computer begins to start up, i.e., a bong, and the Apple logo, and spinning wheel (which goes on forever and never progresses to startup login screen).
    What I've already done:
-Successfully started up from the install disk
-Run Disk Utility to repair disk and disk permissions; everything checks out okay
-Run Apple Hardware Test; everything checks out okay
    -reset PRAM
    -unplugged/replugged computer to reset SMU
-backed up some files via Firewire/Target disk mode
    My questions:
What is the best, easiest, most logical thing to do next?
Should I reinstall system software from G5 install disk?
What happens when you reinstalll from a disk that has an older version of OS? and how do you get the software back up to date afterward?
    Thanks!

I had the same problem though my mac was ok for a couple of days after the update. Tried to boot from original install disk (Tiger, though recently upgraded to Leopard), it didn't boot and disk got stuck. I took my Mac (G5 iMac circa 2005) to a specialist who ran disk warrior - HD ok, he did a few other tests and concluded it was a logic board prblem and uneconomical to repair. On this advice I have purchased (at considerable expense) a new iMac. If this has been a problem with the update that can be fixed I am 1) furious with apple that they have released an update that causes near fatal problems & 2) would like to know if there is any way I can make a claim against anyone (Apple?) for purchasing a new mac that I can ill afford due to the destructive nature of an update.
A friend phoned me earlier with the same Mac problem and I didn't connect my problems to the update but now I've done a search for it, I realise it is a widespread problem. Has apple made any statement about it?

  • Security Update 2008-004 (PPC) caused kernel panic

I installed the Security Update 2008-004 (PPC) and Safari Update 3.1.2 and now I can't access my main startup drive +(the problem started immediately after I restarted my G4 after installing the Security Update 2008-004 -- I got the gray screen with the Apple logo, but it froze there and never got to the login screen).+
My G4 PowerBook (laptop) is running the update just fine -- no kernel panics.
I have a 2nd internal HD on my G4 (desktop) that I use for just such emergencies. The only difference is the 2nd HD does NOT have the Security Update 2008-004 (PPC) and Safari 3.1.2 update. +(Last security update was Security Update 2008-003.)+
I did gain access to my main startup HD at one point and it worked fine until I shut it down +(I unplugged all peripherals (FireWire and USB) and, somehow, got it to startup correctly, then I plugged everything back in).+
*But, the next day, I was back to square 1 when I didn't unplug all my peripherals.*
If I have to unplug everything to startup every time, then I'm going to yank my hair out!
The Mac OS Update software is surely to blame for the kernel panic, 'cause I don't have to do it for the 2nd HD without the 2008-004 Security Update.
Plus, once my G4 is up and running on the 2nd HD, I have total access to my main startup HD. TechTool Pro (v.4.1.1) found no problems with any of the files on it, including the Volumes and Finder Info files, which all tested free of any errors.
According to the not-so-helpful advice from "experts," I'll need to reinstall the MAC OS 10.4.x.
HOWEVER, I want to know if I start from my original DVD 10.4.3 install disk, what happens when I start installing all the updates, including the Security Updates?
*Do I STOP at Security Update 2008-003 (PPC)?*
Because I DON'T want to reinstall the OS or my applications over again and AGAIN!
Apple, PLEASE, fix this Security Update!

    Hi again!
I'd have been asleep maybe a few hours ago, if not for
the late fireworks (from 3 PM until about 12AM) - so,
I am awake and a bit peeved at the scofflaws blasting
many illegal fireworks near my second home in the city.
(Normally, I live in a mostly quiet and beautiful mountain
area that is very Alaska; the largest city is not so nice.)
Back to your inquiry; if you start up in SafeBoot (hold
shift key down until you get Login screen and it says
SafeBoot; then login) and repair disk permissions
before installing the Combo 10.4.11 update, as a
standalone download file with the package on the
    desktop; it should work.
Whether or not it would actually resolve the issue is
yet another matter. There could be an underlying
problem which may be better resolved if you could
make a bootable complete computer drive clone
of the hard disk drive contents, and either see if
a third party utility can scan and fix the hard disk
drive (if it is the problem) or you could get a new
one; and then -either way- clone back the system
onto a new or repaired hard disk drive.

  • Mail broken since security update 2008-004, multiple symptoms

Unfortunately, I can't sum this up in a snappy headline.
To get this started: the machine is an iMac 800MHz, which is running Mac OS X Server 10.4.11. It's not running Leopard, which might cure several issues, because it can't be installed on that machine.
The load is very light (low-traffic web site, DNS server for a low-traffic domain, mail server for essentially one user). I just mention this before I get the "you should not run this on an iMac" type of replies, which are not to the point. The computer ran Mac OS X Server ever since I got it years ago, and it can keep up with the load just fine. It can't keep up with the fragile nature of the Cyrus/postfix/whatever combination, which e.g. after a power outage, or worse, after a software update seems to leave the system semi-regularly in a state that's utterly undefined.
So the system was running very smoothly, for the first time in quite a while, until that security update 2008-004 came along. In installed it, rebooted the system, and now Mail service is down.
If I try to look at the settings for Mail with Server Admin, I get this error message:
"A Service has encountered an error - Try to refresh the view (MY.FIXED.IP.ADDRESS/Mail). Report the problem to the administrator if it persists. (Cannot allocate memory)"
Usually, when Mail acts up, I have this standard routine that I execute, and in 98% of cases that fixes everything:
    +serveradmin stop mail+
    +serveradmin stop mail+
+find /private/var/imap/socket/ -name "lock" -print -exec rm -rf {} \;+
    +rm /private/var/imap/socket/lmtpunix*+
    +rm /private//var/imap/socket/lmtp+
    +sudo -u cyrusimap /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/ctl_cyrusdb -r+
    +sudo -u cyrusimap /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/chk_cyrus+
    +serveradmin start mail+
    +serveradmin start mail+
    +postfix check+
    +postfix start+
Typically, when the ctl_cyrusdb -r runs, I see all the various IMAP folders listed as they are being processed. This is NOT happing now, even though if I navigate into /var/spool/imap/user/someUserName they are all there in the proper hierarchy
I ran DiskUtility's repair permissions, just in case something was screwed up by the ugprade. Also no dice.
    Any hints highly appreciated...

Thanks for your suggestions. I knew that a full rebuild of the database would likely get things going again, and I ended up doing just that, because there server was reaching the point of down-time where permanent delivery failures would result if I didn't bring it back up.
The problem with the mailbox rebuild approach is, that all flags and read/unread status are lost, with is a MAJOR problem. I wish Apple's Mail had a feature where you can push cached message status back to the server, overriding server side message attributes with those cached on the client. Unfortunately this isn't available.
So Mail is running again, but I can't really consider this problem "solved" because all my flagged messages are unflagged, and all messages, read or unread, are now marked unread. If you have a mail archive of several GB dating back to the early 90s, then losing the flagged status on messages is a major issue, as is trying to ge a few hundred thousand messages to get unread again...
I do however take some exception to what you write:
    pterobyte wrote:
You shouldn't have to rebuild your database after a restart or update. If you have to something is wrong on your server. A power outage is a different issue. Any database in the world can get inconsistent because of a sudden power cut. This is what an UPS is for.
That is akin to saying, it's OK if a file system is in a messed up state when the power goes down. That's what atomic operations, transactions, journaling, etc. were invented for. This day and age, there's no excuse for a database to end up in a messed up state because power went down, or for that matter, the system crashes, because no UPS will protect from the latter.
Critical systems, and mail delivery belongs to these, must handle failure gracefully, and the technology to do so, does exist.
    pterobyte wrote:
Also, on OS X Server you should NOT use "postfix stop|start". Use Server Admin or launchctl to stop the launchd item. Furthermore, you should not manually interact with the Cyrus database and remove files. Cyrus is capable of handling its locks and sockets.
I know that this is how things SHOULD be. Unfortunately, postfix will not start properly when mail services are started with server admin. It will stop properly when I stop mail services though.
I had posted a question about that ages ago, but nobody could figure out what is going on. So in the mean time I have resigned to the fact that I have to start postfix manually after each reboot.
I'd more than happy to get past that issue. Here a link to my question regarding this matter:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=904736&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=908174&tstart=0
Similarly, I had once issus where cyrus would refuse to start up, and I found in some support forum the instructions to remove some of these lock files and pipes. That indeed got cyrus going again, and since it recreates these files automatically, I ended up adding the removal of these files to my "try this procedure if mail acts up" routine. It doesn't seem to harm the setup from what I can tell, and it has gotten a stuck system back to work more than once.

  • Help please: Combo Security Update 2008-004 Ver.1 and Safari 3.1.2 update

hi, same issues as everyone else after downloading Combo Security Update 2008-004 Ver.1 and Safari 3.1.2 update, just hanging on blue "loading mac osx", no password screen comes up. i did not have an error like some others when downloading except at the end when it said my startup memory was low, i closed that screen and tried to reboot. that's where i meet everyone else's problem.
I DO NOT HAVE A TIGER START-UP DISK. (i bought my mac a year ago on ebay and the software was installed.
i need help from beginning to end because i am not very mac saavy. thank you. ~laura

The next step would be using the Install Disk to either change the Passwords, or do an Archive & Install if you had enough free space, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc...

"OK, restart your computer, hold down Command-s and type in the following:
    /sbin/fsck -y Enter
    /sbin/mount -uaw Enter
    rm /var/db/.applesetupdone Enter
    1. The rm command is the remove command which deletes the file.
    2. Robert: I'd rename the file via: mv /var/db/.applesetupdone /var/db/.applesetupdone.old
    reboot Enter
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!

If we ever get it booted, we just Must Trash/move some files and empty the Trash!

  • After latest security update my MacBook is not finding any network. My network is ok, iPad and iPhone have no problems, but laptop is for all practical purposes turned into typing machine. Has somebody encountered similar problem? What to do?

After latest security update my MacBook is not finding any network and I think is not really turning wifi on. Has anyone encountered similar problem?

Checked the older discussion of the same type and found solution, well kind of... Thanks to other people who tried it, I just cannot remember their names at the moment. So, the solution for me was to turn off the firewall in the system preferences and suddenly lo and behold there was my network.

  • OSX cannot boot-up after installing Security Update 2008-008

    Hi Everyone.
    I'm using a MacPro 2 x 2.66Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 3GB RAM with Tiger 10.4.11.
After installing Security Update 2008-008, my OSX was not able to boot-up. The screen shows the Apple Logo and the spinning grey gear wheel. It stayed that way for several hours.
I finally switched it off and re-installed OSX 10.4.8 using the Start-up disk that came with my MacPro.
Now I've updated the OSX, all the software & updates EXCEPT Security Update 2008-08. My MacPro works fine now.
Was Security Update 2008-008 the cause of this problem ?
    Sincerely,
    Azman

Was Security Update 2008-008 the cause of this problem ?
Probably not directly. Very likely something was not quite right on your computer before the update and the update happened to exacerbate that. A number of people feel that optimizing the maintenance of your computer before doing the update and doing the update under controlled conditions minimizes problems.
There's been recent discussions as to what steps are truly necessary in doing a minimal problem update.
I think #1 to which all agree is to make sure you have a backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility.
You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It also helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.

  • Since installing Security Update 2008-004 (Intel) ProTools won't open

    Hello,
I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on my mac, and since I installed the Security Update 2008-004 (Intel) every time I try to open ProTools the ProTools icon jumps up and down a few times and then it stops, the program won't open. Are there any similar issues with this update and any other applications? I'm 100% sure the security update is what caused the problem, nothing else out of the ordinary has happened since with my mac.
    Thanks for the help.

If you still have this problem, and you're using ProTools 7.3, try this Digidesign update here:

  • Wireless keyboard doesn't work after latest security update

    Hi,
I update MacOS 10.6.7 with latest security update and my wirelles keyboard is connected, but keys not work, capslock light doesn't change. I try charge battery, then I replace new battery, but it has no effect. I connect keyboard to another Mac with Leopard system and there's no problem... There's some solution? Thanks

Try repairing permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.
There select First Aid.  After that select the hard drive within Disk Utility's window.  Finally click on the button that says Repair Permissions.  A reboot may be necessary to finish the work when it is done.
    Ignore any errors reported.

  • Display doesn't work after latest security update

I have three Apple displays with my MacPro, and after installing the latest security update, one of them just stopped working.
The status light is still on, and my usb devices connected still function, but I have a black screen and nothing is recognized in the displays system preferences.
Anyone else experience this? Did my display just die?

    Ut-oh!
    FWIW:
My 7-year-old 22” Cinema Display, on a 10.4.11 machine, with nearly constant use, now becomes so dim during the screen saver mode that regardless of which saver I use, it becomes no longer visible.
As soon as the screen saver is activated, I have full brightness (though not as bright as when the display was new), then it gradually fades until the screen is all black.
Upon awaking, the screen is very dim, and then, over a 90 second period, it slowly returns to normal brightness.
    1. The brightness control is set to max.
    2. I have toggled the brightness control and changed screen savers, both to no avail.
    3. Recalibrating the display did not work.
This seems to have occurred on the same day I installed the latest Apple Security Updater.
    Very weird...

  • Flashing Folder with ? at startup - occurred after latest security update

    Hi -
Looking for some help here. It may or may not be related to the latest security update to Safari and iTunes, but after updating these on my iMac and doing the required restart my computer had an odd "clicking" noise and struggled to open anything up. At one point, I just did a hard power off and turned it back on, only to have a white screen with a file folder with a question mark flashing at me. I looked through some other posts and tried - Command, Option, P, R - and it did a second restart and I had a working computer again - for now... I'm now trying to back every last piece of information up (haven't done that in a really long time!). I'm just wondering a) Why did this occur? b) How do I prevent or fix this for the future??
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks!

Hi Mary, and a warm welcome to the forums!
That means it can't find the startup Disk, usually due to pre-existing corruption before an update.
Hold the Option key down at startup, see if the HD shows as a choice.
If it still has problems "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • IBook G4 won't load after latest security update, repair doesn't work?

Hi I had the same problem as someone else in this forum:
"Last night I saw that my ibook G4 wanted to do a security update. I told it to do it, and the ibook has not started since. It reset itself after downloaded, but it just stays on the booting up screen, never actually booting up so I can use it. After about two hours of trying to boot up, I turned it off, and on again, and it still wont boot.
I really need suggestions as how I can fix it. Thanks

    HI,
Ok... you need to boot from your install disk.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
If you have the original hard drive in this iBook, it was probably a 60GB drive? When you can do this, check to see how much available disk space there is.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough available drive space can cause issues like you are experiencing.

I tried restarting it after the repair (there were some things to repair and I tried to repair twice just to make sure it didn't miss anything) but it still won't load. It says its starting the OX system, but when the blue bar reaches the end, it doesn't do anything from there. I also left it on for hours and it did nothing. My mousepad still lets me move around the mouse, the caps lock key still lights up, as the num lock key. I tried safe mode but that won't load either...any other suggestions?

  • Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.4.11) won't boot up after latest security update

My G4 failed to reboot when restarted after latest security updtate.
The gray screen with apple logo and rotating gear stays on forever.
I tried booting in safe mode but same thing occurred.
I was able to boot in single user mode and run fsck -yf and it ran fine.
Then when I tried to boot again, same thing all over again.
I am guessing there must be some problems with new updates in the start-up folder or something. But I am not sure how to get rid of the files related to the new updates. Your help would be really appreciated. Oh, I was also able to run disk utilities application when I inserted Mac OS X installation dvd and booted from it. Then when I try to boot from HD, the same thing all over again...

I just spent a good 3 hrs or so trying to figure out why my imac running os x 10.4.11 wasn't rebooting after I downloaded the latest security update 2009-001. I finally got it running again after browsing the many helpful comments from past rebooting issues. Here are the steps:
    1. On another computer, you'll have to download the security update that you believe froze your mac. In my case it was the 2009-001 update.
    2. Save this file to a usb key, or in my case, to my LACIE backup drive.
    3. Once downloaded, connect the USB key or backup drive to your mac.
    4. Insert your install disc that came with your mac. (I installed disc 1)
    5. Power down your mac. ( I did so by pressing and holding the power button on the back)
    6. Press and hold the 'C' key on your keyboard as you restart your mac.
    7. Let go of 'C' as the apple logo and spinning wheel come on. The start-up disc should start to run.
    8. Choose your language.
    9. At the top of your desktop you'll see 'Terminal'. Start it.
    10. at the prompt, type "mount" to see a list of your volumes (in my case, the volume was LACIE).
    11. type "find /Volumes/nameofyourUSB/*.dmg" Ex. "find /Volumes/LACIE/*.dmg" (This step will give the path of your update).
    12. type "hdiutil attach /Volumes/nameofyourUSB/pathoftheupdate/SecUpd2009-001Intel.dmg" (Note the space after hdiutil AND attach)
    13. type "/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/usr/sbin/installer -pkg /Volumes/Security\ Update\ 2009-001/SecUpd2009-001Intel.pkg -target /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD" (Note the spaces again. Took me a few tries before I finally got it. If you get it right, you'll notice your hard-drive start to be active. Let it do it's thing before you exit Terminal.
    14. Exit Terminal.
    15. Go to 'Utilities' at the top of the desktop, select 'Startup Disk', and choose your OS (in my case, OS X 10.4.11).
    Good luck!
