Vertical Stripes after send back to FCP

This is a new problem I have not seen in the past. After I color correct a sequence and send back to FCP, some of the clips are corrupted - all you see are vertical bands of color. I have tried a few different things to no avail. Any suggestions.

But there is something about them that COLOR doesn't like -- if it is not an intermittent fault. If you have already tried a restart and re-render, you can eliminate that as a possible causative. There may be a filter, or if you were working in Express, the media may have been digitized in a marginal format.
Without knowing anything else about your media -- resolution, codec, framerate... can't offer much more advice.

  • Sending back to FCP from Color no clips no sequence

So I am sure i am missing the blindingly obvious but would appreciate some help.
I am new ish to color but have read the manual and taken the Macpro video 1.5 training DVD to try and get up to speed.... Here is my problem:
I am sending a multiclip sequence to color (1080i pro res render). The clips appear in color and i am able to grade and render all OK.
When i send back to FCP i get a new sequence and new bin labeled with the clips.
however the sequence is empty and the bin contains a bunch of off line media. I can locate the new clips using finder but they are roughly 4 times the size of the original....
    Any help appreciated

What version COLOR? Multiclip is advertised to be functionally supported by COLOR 1.5, but it is not supported in any previous version. I am not familiar with the MacPro training DVDs, so I'm not assuming that it is tied to the current version.
When you say that they "render all OK"... are you sure about that? Why are the new clips about 4x the size of the original? That doesn't register as "OK" with me....
It could be a codec issue (doubt it) and it could be a speed remap issue (why not compound a known problem with another one?) and then it could be a renderqueue misdirection...

  • Vertical stripes after latest Security Update 2008-004 for OS X Tiger

    Hi there,
I'm experiencing vertical stripes and color issues on my PB G4 17 inch screen after the security update 2008-004.
Funny thing is, a screenshot looks fine.
I already resetted PRAM and NVRAM. Didn't help.
    Does anyone know a solution?
    Thanks,
    Phil

It's probably got nothing to do with the upgrade.
I guess your computer is about 15-20 months old and the serial number starts with W84 or W85.
This is obviously a common problem among these serial numbers, and it starts after about 15 months.
I've got a mint PBG4 17, that's NEVER left the house. Just turned it in on AppleCare repair (32 days left, phew) for this problem.

  • Media offline after sending back from color

Ok. I have searched around and not finding anything offhand, but I have not changed any default settings but I am getting media offline when I import back to FCP. I can find the location of the files and all but its giving me a hard time bringing media online.

I dragged and drop the file that came back from color.
Dragged and dropped? There is nothing to drag and drop. You SEND TO FCP from Color, then in FCP a new sequence shows up. Double click on that.
But I might be getting into semantics...you might be doing that but not explaining it well.

If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.

  • Problem sending back to FCP

I am color correcting a feature film, and I broke it down into sections to correct it in Color. Everything transferred from FCP (6.0.5) to Color (1.0.4) with no problem. The first 3 sections rendered and went back into FCP (using the "send to Color" option) without a problem. I encountered a problem with Color when my hard drive ran out of space, but I have another drive and it has rendered with no problem. But now, it wont go back into FCP. I use the "send to" option and it opens FCP, imports to about 50%-53% and freezes. Any idea why this happens and what I can do to fix it?
    Footage is XDCAM EX 1080p

error message saying that it could not create a new sequence,
So does a COLOR-generated sequence exist for the fourth act somewhere? Search for anything that might be sitting around that could cause an ambiguity, or try sending an XML with a different name. It should try to create a whole new project.
Failing that, experience is suggesting there is a "poison pill" in the original FCP sequence. It might look totally innocent, but it is corrupting the Markup Language. COLOR is masking it because it doesn't need everything that FCP does. When COLOR drops it.... that's the end of the round trip, thank you; now, if we could get everyone to kindly use the nearest exit. b'bye (the way the stewards say it)...

  • Color wont send back to FCP- crashes

Really big problem here. Just finished a rather large grade project in color- about 6mins long, but many many cuts. Have rendered the clips in color, and am trying to send it back to FCP for the master.
Problem is- color keeps crashing. Soon as i hit "send to FCP" color quits.
In need of some urgent help!
    Thanks-

Only one way to do this -
Re install Color 1.0 (I got a second internal drive and did a system FCP 2.0 installon to it - then I copied the color 1.0 ap to a separate directory on my main drive so I had both 1.0 and 1.01 on there)
Open the graded rendered project in 1.0 and try send to FCP - it should work - Apple broke this in the upgrade and seem to be too busy with I phones and Leopards to fix it.

  • Color grading send back to FCP

In Color, after I've graded my shots and send them back to final cut - they appear more saturated and 'muckier' than ever in the canvas window and nothing like as clean or as sharp as in color after I've graded them. Any ideas?

Actually when I view the clip that was in the canvas in the editor - I think it looks alright (I don't have a production monitor - I'm working solely from a 27' Apple Imac. Is it just the way it appears in the color window as opposed to the editor/canvas. In the editor it still looks slightly soft but maybe I'm seeing things and that's the way it's supposed to be. The canvas looks terrible though - am I supposed to do something to it?
    Thanks.

  • Sending back to FCP from Color

I have been going nuts all day about this, I have a sequence with about 20 dissolves. It is about 1 minute 30 seconds long. I applied a very simple color fx called dream.cold.cfx. I got the clips to render, that was no problem. But when I "Send to Final Cut" it comes back correctly as a "Sequence_name (from color)" but the sequence is empty is is blank. The clips are in folders labeled 1,2 ,3, 4, etc. But it dosen't come back as a sequence in FC. help me, I read the manual, I look at the discussions. I looked at my render folder settings, etc.
I need help.... it's 11:00pm here in NY and I am tired and getting ready to hit the machine with a sledge hammer.

I am running latest version Mac OS 10.53, FCP 6, I have all the latest evrything. I tried exporting XML out of color. What I hav done is just pieced together the rendered clips from the color render folders and put the dissolves back on. But this shpouldn't happen. To tell you the truth I had it right the first time I did it, but I failed to apply the effect to a very small clip in the color sequence. So when I went back to the original FCP sequence that's when it hit the fan. I had the "send to FCP" corerct, but now it is just blank when I do it. I've done it hundreds of times, changing render folders etc. I have now just rerendered as a quicktime movie and did it that way.

  • Won´t send back to FCP

    Hi everybody.
I have a big problem: When I´m done with my grading in Color, and has rendered, I go to " send to FCP"- it sends a xml file- but it doesn´t show up in FCP with the ( from Color)?? FCP doesn´t seem to read it?
I´m completely lost- I have used Color a lot with no problems so far. I changed my preferences just for the sake of having enough space for the render files- but that shouldn´t mess it up.
    Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks- Adam Simonsen.

As I wrote i another post: my project concisted of many different sequences- the projectfile was 32 Mb- so it was actually huge. If i copied and pasted one of the sequences into a new clean project- then everything worked flawlessly- going from FCP to Color and back again. Don´t ask me why- maybe there is a limit of filesize- maybe the project got too big?? Even this doesn´t make so much sense. Thanks for good advice!

  • Sending back to FCP

Once I have finished the render in Color and the render files are created exactly where and as they should be I send the sequence to FCP. When I open the (From Color) sequence in FCP it does not have the rendered clips from color, but the original clips completely ungraded. This is a new problem that I have just recently started experiencing and have no idea why?

Try another 'send to' fcp. Also, make sure you have the right sequence open in FCP. It may be obvious (but it might not) - it'll say "From Color"

  • Color renders fine, on sending back to FCP end up with smeared images

Hi Hope someone can help. I send my (Clients) sequence DV PAL 720X576 16:9 anamorphic to color. BTW this was footage down-converted from HDV1080i50. Do all the color corrections and grading, footage looks great, send to FCP and hey presto smeared images in the viewer and canvas, thumbnails look ok in the timeline. Now what i mean by smeared images is not just a slight smearing but unrecognizable images, useless video.
Ok some background: No transitions, filters of any sort for that matter, no motion effects of any sort, in fact none of the listed items of what not to send to Color. The sequence is only 37s give or take a frame. There are no gaps in my sequence and Yes, I've tripple checked my sequence settings in FCP. User prefs and project settings in Color and pretty much left at default with the exception of using floating point and auto save set to 10min.
    FCP 6.0.2, Color 1.0.2
    Desparately seeking help.

Next time I'm across the pond (not that often) we'll break out the Bushmills, unless its Jamesons.
Getting out of HDV first was done correctly. Personally, I think there is nothing else that you can possibly do to damage the image further (than the origination format), so nothing to lose by going to one of the Apple ProRes codecs -- your choice of Regular or High. There have been so many historical (hysterical) issues with PAL-DV it would make a novel.
I was wondering if the next thing to do was import the directory containing your rendered footage and do a brute force drop of all the clips onto the timeline -- they are sequentially numbered, so this CAN be done in one step. Not elegant.. but for a cuts-only timeline it is what we occasionally were forced to do when the application was Final Ouch. There's nothing compulsory about "Send to.." or XML import... thankfully, in a number of cases...

  • Color changes my IN/OUTS and sends a BLANK sequence back to fcp

hi everyone, Please help if you know, I am very frustrated
i finished editing a music video HDV 1080i - 5 minutes long... a lot of the clips have variable speeds.
i sent the sequence to color and a lot of the clips are different than the ones in final cut. (what is weird is that the thumbnail on the color timeline has the right icon) but the video that plays is different, and when i go to render it, it shows its length as 1hr or so even if the edited clip is a few seconds long. so i can't even render it to check it out.
with all that, when i render and send back to FCP i'm getting a blank sequence (that is IF i get it to show).
NOte: i tried deleting the corrupted files before sending back and nothing good :s
Please let me know if there is something in the settings that i need to change, my project is due in a couple of days and i'm dying here! i hope FCS doesn't let me down this time.

    Couple of reasons, maybe.
The "COLOR changes my ins and outs" is usually related to a Variable Time Remap, or some kind of fps incompatibility. Sometimes its the result of nested sequencing, which is in a way related to Multicllip -- all of which are deal-breakers as far as a round-trip is concerned. Final Touch used to re-create the entire source clip, but only insert the selected frames where it thought they should be, which was usually wrong, but there'd be a half an hour of black to wade through. Now it renders the entire source clip, and "you figure it out", is what it tells Final Cut, and sometimes it actually works, but only with constant speed remaps, so there is some math involved instead of pure guesswork.
    But trouble shooting:
First, check to see if the media is properly rendered somewhere, anywhere, by using the FInder and Quicktime Player, that is, take Final Cut out of the mix as a possible error element. Try doing a Reveal in Finder on one of the Black clips that you have... "follow the money".
If you can find it, if it exists, if it looks okay, then its time to sort out what Final Cut wants or where it expects to find the media. Maybe in a wrong directory? But if there is no media, anywhere, that is another issue, but I'm betting that it does exist.
There is a correct sequence of events in loading the RenderQueue, in that your target folder must be selected or created beforehand, otherwise everything will go to the pre-existing default directory. Then the XML created by the Send To Final Cut request will specify the folder that you subsequently created -- which, of course will be blank. This is a big, big problem that might be solved by moving the whole works into the created folder where you thought everything was going. maybe.
You MUST do an explicit "SAVE", not an autosave, after Render, to prompt COLOR to remember that it has done the render. If you don't, there is a good chance you will be doing it all over again.

  • Audio Synch from Color back to FCP

I am sending a short sequence with 8 clips or so to color, adding a color fx to half of the clips, rendering all of the clips, inc. the ones without an effect added, and sending back to fcp. When I open the new color sequence, the audio is out of synch by a few seconds. Any ideas why?

    Any ideas why?
Not really, but it has been a continuing problem. You're sure it is the audio that is out of sync, and not the video? (Just checking) There are a lot of complaints, especially with HDV about frame drift.
Best solution is to lift the audio from the previous timeline and paste it into the graded (from COLOR) sequence. Even when a mixed stereo final is part of the workflow, it almost never comes back the same, so most, if not all, users avoid sending and retrieving audio as part of the COLOR roundtrip. In my experience, even if it somehow mysteriously lands back in sync, the pan settings are all slammed over to one side.
So we all just pull the original audio forward from the previous sequence and Apple can go onward in its delusional mindstate.

  • Going back to FCP from Color...use original format or ProRes422?

OK, so I've color graded all 5 reels for my feature film and am finally ready to send back to FCP and reassemble! I'm hoping Shane Ross can jump in here too since he's been SO helpful up to this point :-) So I have two different formats which I've graded seperately...720p DVCPROHD stuff (99%) of film and two scenes which were HDV 1080p24. So far when I've sent back my DVCPROHD clips I've rendered out of Color using ProRes422..but my Resolution Presets: and Width & Height settings are what I'm most concerned with. What I've done when sending back to FCP is use Apple ProRes 422 with Width 1280 and Height 720 and changing my Resolution Preset from 720 x 576 DV PAL to 1280 x 720 HD to match the Width and Height settings (not sure if I should leave this at 720 x 576 DV PAL??). However, the clips show up in FCP as 133%..so obviously upscaled. So now I'm going to export the DVCPRO stuff to Compressor to upscale to ProRes422 1920x1080 to bring back and match with the HDV 1080p24 footage before FINAL export to compressor again. Should I not be sending the Color clips back to FCP upscaled to 133% with my Color settings...since I will then again be upscaling in Compressor? Or will it really make that much of a difference? And also, should I check the Broadcast Safe circle in Color when sending back to FCP? I didn't color correct with the Broadcast Safe on so should I now to be on the safe side?
    Thanks!
    David

Ok Shane, So actually just went over my Color outputs and I did render everything as ProRes 422 at 1280x720 ...and the clips back in FCP are scaled at 100% so that's good...for some reason I remember having some that came back at 133%...maybe that was just a couple clips somewhere that were wrong...I'll figure that out...but I didn't check Broadcast Safe on the renders so I guess I can go back and re-render with broadcast safe on...so we did shoot 720p HD and I AM going back still in HD from Color.
Now I'm having another issue with the HDV 1080p24 stuff...which is actually only 20 shots of the entire film. But for some reason I'm noticing that they are interlaced when viewing on my FCP timeline, which my settings are HDTV 1080i 1920x1080...now when I export the scene out to Compressor as a ProRes 422 1920x1080 .mov it actually looks great on my computer monitor...no interlacing that I can tell, looks great. However, if I drop it onto my FCP 1080i timeline then there is interlacing again...and worse, when I make a SD DVD it is also interlaced...most noticable an actor's shirt, there is a bit of Moire effect going on...this must be because I'm downconverting to 720x486?? So I've been killing myself trying to figure this one out. Doesn't appear that deinterlacing in Compressor helps any either. Is my only option to blur it out with a gaussian blur of around 2? (the HDV clips do show as 1080p24 in FCP) Not sure if the interlacing would be gone if I were to burn a bluray since it's a higher resolution?? My settings in FCP are 1920x1080 HDTV 1080i (16:9) Pixel Aspect: Square, Apple ProRes 422 BTW.
There's also quite a bit of color blurring when watching from a burnt DVD from DVD Studio Pro...wish it looked as good as it does on my LG LED 32" screen with Matrox mini...man, do DVD's really look this bad? REALLY considering going and buying an external BluRay burner today
So if I could just get this interlacing problem resolved somehow...

  • After sending XML back to FCP, not all clips make it to the timeline :(

The clips I sent from FCP were on 3 video tracks (most of them on the 1st). Mostly DVCProHD 720, with some SD DV and a little 2K (which didn't translate to Color). All clips after the 2K didn't come back to FCP, and none of the clips on the video 2 and video 3 tracks came back, either. I wonder...

There's a question in here somewhere, I'm sure of it...
If your 2K clips were on Layer 1, and COLOR lost the plot there, then nothing on layer 2 or 3 would have been seen either, since clips are numbered consecutively along the Layers, with the first clip on Layer 2 being (last clip # on Layer 1 +1) , and the first clip on Layer 2 being (last clip # on Layer 2 +1) and so on.
Mixed formats are usually a recipe for disaster.
