Vertical Text Selection (InDesign)

I've been trying to look for information to help me select text vertically in InDesign unsuccessfully. I know Microsoft Word can do it, is there a way to select text vertically in InDesign? Perhaps using a script? I use InDesign CS1 on a Mac G4. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot,
M

There may be some sort of clumsy and tedious way to do it with the help of Word:
You could copy your text to a Word document, then do to it whatever can be done in order to make the text flow and line breaks etc match the appearance it has in InDesign. Then do the vertical selection. Give some significant new attribute to the selection, like another typeface.
Save the Word document and place it to that text box in InDesign where it actually came from. Do a search&replace looking for the new "alien" typeface, replacing it by the original one plus doing to it what you actually wanted to do with it ...
Well, as I said: clumsy and tedious

  • Delay selecting text in Indesign CC and Acrobat XI

    Do you know any tricks to speed up these two products?
    Or – is how they work – now they've been re-written?
    Maybe a list of bullet points – "Ways to ensure text selection is as good as can be." would be helpful.

    The JDF features were removed for a very simple reason – lack of third party support and customer use. Adobe's OEM partners (the companies licensing the Adobe PDF Print Engine and/or Adobe PostScript for use in their printer and RIP products) as well as most workflow and web-to-print providers refused to implement JDF-based workflows. As such, a miniscule number of our Acrobat or InDesign customers either used or even knew about the feature.
    C'est la vie!

  • InDesign Text Selection Shortcut

    Hi all,
    Amongst the myriad of InDesign's shortcuts, is there one to jump back into the text frame with the text tool, without having to use the mouse.
    Many thanks,
    Rob

    for me, it's: i have been "out of the tech scene" for about 5 solid years. i was involved in it consulting on a reasonably high level for a good while.
    i'm doing a few projects that require a bit of a return to tech.
    and i just upgraded to yosemite -- which pretty much "feels" like upgrading to windows 95. really really annoying.
    and here i am in indesign and you can't go "View | Extras" and turn text selection highlighting on and off.
    it's just a facepalm moment for me.
    i hear you Steve, in that you are saying "things take time," but from my perspective -- software development as an industry has lacked clear, user-advocacy focused leadership.
    i am also currently using premiere pro. the latest version. and i just cannot believe how bad the user interface is. great, yeah, i guess you CAN accomplish particular things with premiere that you cannot in other applications -- but again -- like in the early to mid 1990's -- you have to jump through so many needless hoops to get there, it is just plain ridiculous.
    and it's 2015.
    it's not 1995.
    it's 2015.
    so really, i am saying that i give the industry of software development, as a whole, a C- for their contributions to humanity over the last 20 years.
    i can cite plenty of other examples why -- and might in future publications of mine -- but it's important to me to provide solutions along with critique. i have solutions prepared, but haven't gotten around to publishing them yet.
    this highlighting issue may seem small -- but it's really just another straw on this camel's back.
    obtuse user interface programming won't break my back - but i will express my dissatisfaction clearly -- and i am willing to provide solutions as well.
    frankly, in this return to tech for me -- i'd enjoy providing end user advocacy services to a few companies -- including adobe.
    "this stuff" could all work so much better -- so much more easily -- if end user advocacy played a much more prominent role in user interface design.

  • How can I restore the text selection highlight colour to the default black colour in indesign CC ?

    How can I restore the text selection highlight colour to the default black colour in indesign CC ?

    Manish Shama, thanks for your speedy response. I was able to get into my MAC settings and change the background from the black to whatever color I like, so that helps (THANKS!). But the real issue is that the selected text does not turn white (even though that's what's specified in my MAC settings), it remains black. I really want to have the selection reverse out as it always has for years and years going all the way back to PageMaker Any ideas?

  • Can't select vertical text formatting since Win 7

    Please help.
    Have recently upgraded to win 7 and now I cannot select any text formatting options in the drop down text menus. I can see them, but the drop down menu buttons don't work.
    Has anyone had this happen?
    I have spent so much time on the computer and it's so hard to get any work done.
    Advice would be much appreciated
    I would like to go back to XP but the computer guy says that's not possible.
    Thanks
    ZeeBud

    Thank you so much for responding Peter. I feel one step closer to being able to get my work done.
    Your solution means that I can now use the tools in the tools palette, but no luck with being able to use the text selection drop down menus.
    It's quizzical. I can select the fonts by clicking through file the file path> type> font. Just not through drop downs.
    Any thoughts anyone?

  • How to make Vertical Text start furom left to right?

    Sometimes some customers must be vertical text from left to right
    This is mainly for Asian fonts
    Whether it can be achieved with script,Or are there other methods?
    Thank you~

    @喜狼_edny – hm. Possible, but the result is somehow unsatisfactory.
    See for yourself.
    We could start with some text right aligned in a table with just one single cell:
    We could rotate the cell to 270° like that:
    Code:
    var myCell = app.selection[0].tables[0].cells[0];
    myCell.rotationAngle = 270;
    And now we need the text direction from right to left and all characters rotated to 180°:
    Code:
    var myCell = app.selection[0].tables[0].cells[0];
    myCell.rotationAngle = 270;
    myProperties = {
        composer : "$ID/HL Composer Optyca",
        characterDirection : CharacterDirectionOptions.RIGHT_TO_LEFT_DIRECTION,
        paragraphDirection : ParagraphDirectionOptions.RIGHT_TO_LEFT_DIRECTION,
        characterRotation : 180
    myCell.texts[0].properties = myProperties;
    Result:
    Ugh! Not exactly the result we expected…
    (Tested with InDesign CS5.5 on OSX 10.6.8)
    It's the characterRotation that is not working as expected.

  • How use SDK to insert text in indesign using c++

    Hello All
    I want to  use Indesign CS5.5 SDK  in my  c++ project first to create Indesign Document then insert text in textframe.
    How include SDK in my project ?
    Is it right method to create indesign Application using SDK.
    #include "IApplication.h"
    #include "ISession.h"
    # include "IDocumentCommands.h"
    virtual IApplication *  QueryApplication()=0 ;
    ISession *  GetExecutionContextSession();
    IApplication application(GetExecutionContextSession()->QueryApplication());
    It required so many .h file, first I copy .h file from SDK and put in Project directory but it give some error after including these .h file in project.
    There are so many directory(source,build,docs, etc.) in SDK.How include and use this SDK in my project to create Indesign Document.
    How include so many  .h file in my project ?
    I have already included SDK path in VisualStudio2008 ->Tools->Option->ProjectSolutions->vc++Directories
    Thanks.

    Hi Jongware,
    This is not correct in C# you have type cast all the object to another Object and then only we can access it in required format
    for example
    if want to get font in active Document
    InDesign.Application myInDesign=  (InDesign.Application) COMCreateObject("InDesign.Application");
    InDesign myDocument = (InDesign.Document)myInDesign.ActiveDocument;
    InDesign.ParagraphStyles pStyles = (InDesign.ParagraphStyle)myDocument.ParagraphStyles
    InDesign.ParagraphStyle pSteyls = (InDesign.ParagraphStyle)myDocument.ParagraphStyle
    for(int i =0;i<pStyles.Count;i++)
         pStyle = (InDesign.ParagraphStyle)myDocument.ParagraphStyles[i];
    public static object COMCreateObject (string sProgID)
        // We get the type using just the ProgID
        Type oType = Type.GetTypeFromProgID (sProgID);
        if (oType != null)
            return Activator.CreateInstance( oType);
        return null;
    like above content
    for selection content u have to type cast selection object.
    InDesign.Selection = (InDesign.Selection).myDocument.Selection;
    Console.Writeline(InDesign.Selection.Contents);
    but it showing error....
    like this you have to type cast all things in C# and you cannot simply get selection contents like app.selection[0].contents
    pls help me
    Thank you for your reply....

  • Is there any way to link page number with the reference page number within text in InDesign CC and CS6?

    Is there any way to link page number with the reference page number within text in InDesign CC and CS6?

    You should ask in InDesign
    The Cloud forum is not about using individual programs
    The Cloud forum is about the Cloud as a delivery & install process
    If you will start at the Forums Index https://forums.adobe.com/welcome
    You will be able to select a forum for the specific Adobe product(s) you use
    Click the "down arrow" symbol on the right (where it says All communities) to open the drop down list and scroll

  • Adding a Drop Shadow to text in InDesign CS6

    I have no character styles in my recent installation of Cloud InDesign CS6 and want to know how I import these effects.

    Character Styles and Drop Shadow, (an object-level effect), are not related. There is nothing to import.
    To apply a drop shadow to text, select (black arrow) the text frame and choose Drop Shadow from the fx menu at the bottom of the Effects panel, (Window > Effects). The Drop Shadow dialog opens where you set the parameters of the effect.

  • Problem with vertical text in crystal report viewer

    Hi,
    I am displaying vertical text in crystal report designer and deploying the report in crystal reports server 2008. The deployed report is being displayed using JAVA in crystal report viewer control.
    Problem: Vertical text header  is getting collapsed wth other vertical headers.
    Please help on this.
    Thanks,

    Hi Vijay,
    I found out another method of retaining all the chart formatting that is done in the preview pane.
    Once you have done all the changes then you will find interestingly there is a chart menu option that appears in the tool bar. Once you click on it there is an option "Apply Changes to All Charts".
    Select that option, close your preview. Open it once again and you will find that all the settings are still there and the Web Viewer is able to display them properly.
    I think that I resolved this.

  • Arabic text in indesign

    Hi
    I have indesign cs6 version 8.0.2. I would like to know how I can have a document that has arabic and english text. As when i copy and paste my arabic text into a text window, with the correct font selected (adobe arabic), it does not work. Do I need to download a specific plug in? do I need the Middle east version of Indesign?
    Please can someone help. Its for a brochure that is in arabic and english in teh same file.
    Thanks a lot

    Hi,
    Please select all the Arabic text in InDesign and either go to Paragraph Palette flyout menu or Control panel fly out menu. You'll find a host of composers. Please select Adobe World-Ready Paragraph Composer instead of Adobe Paragraph Composer. And your Arabic texts will work.
    You don't need to download a specific plug in. Ideally, You should need Middle east version of InDesign to get other design related ME features.
    Thanks,
    Irfan

  • Vertical text in CR 2008

    Hello,
    I need to display the text in the columns labels vertically. When I set text rotation to 90 degrees, the text is rotated in the designer, but when I run the report - it's horizontal. However, when I print or export the report, the text is vertical again.
    After searching Google I've found out that this is a known bug in CR. However, I didn't find any solution other than using a CSS file. I've never used CSS with the Crystal Reports, so I wonder - is there any other solution to this problem? I need the text to be vertical on the web site as well.
    Thank you.

    The following information may help you
    Symptom

    Environment:
    Crystal Reports XI

  • Wrong orientation of text selection cursor

    I've OCR'ed a PDF document with page orienation "portrait" using Acrobat Pro XI with setting "exact image".
    Unfortunately the text selection cursor has the wrong orientation, its orientation is "horizontal" but should be "vertical" as the text is written from left to right (German) in the document.
    Any ideas how to change the cursor orientation?
    Thanks.

    I have got the same problem. Text ocr-ed with with setting "exact image", too - don't know if that matters. The problem might be indepedent from that.
    The proble mist a real pain. It heavily disturbes text selection an marking.
    Unfortunately I don't have a solution.
