hello
i am very new to portals, i have two windows xp machines on a workgroup each with 1GB ram ..
what do i need to create a small portal for demonstration and educationnal purposes ?
shall i install
the oracle10g AS infrastructure on one machine,
and middle tier on another machine ?
then how to launch the portal developement tool ?

We have installed both infra and mid-tier on same machine. It works great.
Machine is Windows Server 2003, 3,2 GHz, 1GB RAM.
I would believe XP could manage this too.

I bought Adobe elements 11 and have been trying to do a very basic animated gif with it.I came acroos some instructions about layering,etc but still cannot get it to work. All I want to do is add two of my school photos together so that one suddenly vanishes and the one appears.I am planning to put this on my blog.
The animation I want is the day time picture of teh school magically vanish and the night time picture appear.Can it be done with elements11(I wouldn't mind if someone can even do it for me so that I could deconstruct it later!).I have attached the two photos.Please remember ,my knowledge of phtoshop is abysmal and very very basic.My apologies for that.hence I might be need to be told like a 10-year old!

It’s not possible to fade between gif images but you could sandwich two layers with a black fill layer between them as I have done in this example.
Then use the menu:
File >> Save For Web
Choose gif as the file type, select animate, and set your timing in seconds with continuous loop if required.
Then Save.
PS the images are different sizes so I had to re-size the daylight image to make it the same as the night image.

Possibly a very basic question but I have set up a spread sheet in Numbers and have viewed help videos but I can't get it to give me sums for the columns I highlight. Keeps coming up with the figure zero. I have version 09 2.3(554). Can anyone help

Possibly a very basic question but I am going nowhere without a solution. I have set up a spreadsheet in Numbers but it won't give me sums for chosen columns. I have viewed the run through videos and used the formula but nothing happens apart from giving a figure of zero or a red arrow. The sum icon in the bottom left hand section of the window does not highlight or show any total as I understand from the video that you can drag whatever total is here onto the relevent position on your spreadsheet. I have Numbers 09 version 2.3 (554). Can anyone advise. Thanks.

To sum a column, use a formula such as this one in Cell A6
Type this in a cell below your data:
=SUM(A2:A4) or whatever range of cells you want to sum. The easy way is to type:
=SUM(
and then drag or shift-click to select the range of cells. Close the formula with a final bracket ")".

To see the sum (and other simple statistics) in the bottom left, select a range of cells. That tells Numbers which cells you are refering to.
The videos are good, but the Numbers'09 User guide, and the Formulas and Functions User Guide are better. Download them from the Help Menu in Numbers.

Very Basic Question i think ?

Hi im very new to flash but am looking to learn some more
about it i have tried to use the pre-built components in flash and
was just wondering where or how you can retrieve the values from
the checked boxes
i know how to do for 1 checkbox by using
if ( instancename.value = true){

but what i am looking to do is run through a series of 5
checkboxes and retrieve all the labels at first i can probably work
out the checking if they are ticked but all i get traced is
undefined which i guess means no value.
This is the code i used to try to retrieve all the labels of
every checkbox on press of a button

VERY Basic Questions about Oracle eBusiness - what "languages" are used?

Please forgive the very basic nature of this post- (I have been in systems (IT) for over 20 years, so I do have lots of systems experience, but no exposure to this particular software.)
So here are the basic questions - I assume that much of the data base logic is written in PL/SQL, but what other tools / languages are the applications written in?
(Oracle Forms, Oracle Reports, Java, C, something else?)
With over 20 years and experience with a number of other packages, I can learn a great deal about an application by 1. Looking at the DB structures (charts), 2. looking into DB code (Packages, triggers, procedure, functions) and 3. Seeing the screen shots.
None of my customers have had Oracle eBusiness - that have had home grown applications or other COTS/packages.
can anyone suggest a place where an independent person can inexpensively get some exposure?
My sincere thanks for any answers/suggestions.

Very basic questions on text/email

So I'm now convinced - with the 3.0 OS and the 3GS handset, the iPhone finally does all I want it to do and I'll be buying my first one in a couple of weeks.
Before I do, though, I have a couple of very basic questions:
1. Does predictive text only work in the SMS app, or does it work in the apps for email, writing notes, etc?
2. Can you turn the predictive text off? (I find it wildly irritating, because I know far better what words I want to write than a pesky phone does!)
3. Having email sent to a mobile is a whole new world for me! Do I need to subscribe to MobileMe at £££ per month, or is there another way of having email from my three accounts forwarded to my mobile?

You can access any IMAP or POP account with the iPhone's Mail client, and access multiple email accounts. I currently access to email accounts with the iPhone's mail client - my MobileMe account, and a business POP account. You can access all 3 of your email accounts with the iPhone's Mail client.

VERY basic - how to decide what type of architecture to use?

Forgive me if I'm breaking any forum rules with this post - I'm very new to this.
I'm trying to write a Labview program to perform a functional test on an electronic product. The test is fairly sequential - plug in the unit, apply a certain voltage, step up the voltage until the unit turns on, then turn on an electronic load, measure the load voltage, then step up the input voltage again, etc. The power supply and electronic load that I'm using both have Labview drivers.
I'm brand new to Labview, and I have no resources in my company to help me out. I have taken the Core 1 and 2 training class. The problem is, I'm not really sure how to start. Would this be a producer/consumer architecture? A QSM? I've been scouring these forums the past couple of days, but most of the discussions are advanced. I don't understand all the acronyms. A lot of the replies here assume you have some knowledge of Labview, and I don't. Part of the problem is that I don't even know enough to ask a specific question, and that's why this post is so vague.
I'm a competent PLC/HMI programmer but don't have any experience in other languages.
I also want to be able to use variables for my limits so that I can easily change the pass/fail limits. (For instance, I want the voltage and current pass/fail limits to be configurable from a "maintenance" screen on the Labview interface, but I don't know how to create multiple screens or password protect them).

I have stated my opinion reagarding the QSM* design pattern previously and will not repeat it again here aside from "I avoid them like the plague".
Architecture questions are good question but hardly "very basic" although some architectures can be very basic.
I would recomend a State Machine that uses Action Engines to control your widgets.
in this thread AND this thread I wrote extensively and included design documents for apps I developed. I invite you to look those over and start developing your own design that meets your needs.

A very basic question regarding data block

Hi All,
I've a very basic question concerning data blocks in oracle forms 10g.
I want to make a view only screen (only query allowed, no update, insert or delete).
I'll have 6-7 fields on the screen but all the fields are not from a single table.
For e.g, let say we've field names to display on the screen are f1, f2, f3, f4..
Out of this f1 and f2 will come from table A and f3, f4 will come from table B.
Now, my question : Is it possible to create a data block using the data block wizard for such situation if we select create data block from table options?
If no, can you please tell me an approach to do this.

First write your query & select datablock property.
just change the below properties
Query Data Source Type=From Clause Query
Query Data Source Name = (Paste query here)
now you should add the block ITEMs and give their names according to query columns names. shows the column on canvas and run..

Matte/mask question - very basic

Really dumb question- I have never fully understood the terminology, though I know conceptually what I want to do. I want to create an image matte I believe. An example would be - I have a photograph of a television set. I have made the entire screen (slightly oval) all pure black. I wish to have a layer (video) underneath it snow up, but only through this layer of black, so the image is cropped around the edge of the round-ish screen (it's an old TV). How do I do this? I'm always confused at all the composite modes - matte, mask, add, yada yada.
I know this is very basic, so I'm looking for some guidance on how to accomplish this so I know the terminology and the basics.

In the interests of science and bad family entainment (which I know Mike likes to inflict on relatives. Sorry Mike, had to throw that in, still get a laugh when I think about that post) ... there is more than one way to skin the cat
Mike - if you wanted to use a matte and not a mask then you'll want to composite the image you want to use in the screen part of the tv using that part of the tv.
You'll want the "black" portion of your screen to be white. Then you'd use on another layer above that white "matte" the image or layer of video you want to appear.
So you'd have your tv box on one layer- then your white screen on anther layer - then an image/video above using Travel Matte Luma from the composite mode.
It's quick - but offers less cntrol, imo.
I like masks - personal preference only, tho'

that I require is a front page that is password protected
(protecting access to all of the content on the page) and an index
that links to different captivate projects.
How can I get started? Is there a template for this that I

No need to apologize. But do be aware that a
password-protected page isn't
quite in the "very basic" category - not rocket science
either, but DW isn't
a program like FrontPage with its' "server extensions" that
do things like
this automatically for you.
The very simplest way would probably be to ask your web host
if they can
password-protect a single directory for you. If they can,
that might be all
you need.
If that won't work, you'll need to ask your web host what
scripting
languages your account supports: PHP? ASP? Based upon that
answer, you can
find and install a script in the right "flavor".

I can't seem to get a very simple "HelloWorld.jsp" file to work in Tomcat. I have the file helloworld.jsp with the following:

Thanks to you both, however, I am well aware of my option to use out.println..., but what I was trying to achieve is using the JSTL, and that is where I am having problems. Also, switching the order of my arguments in the taglib declaration made no difference. Anybody else have an idea on how to get the JSTL working?

How can learn the very basics of Pixelmator?

How can I learn the very basics of using Pixelmator? I have no graphic arts experience beyond WOrd Art which I've used to design t-shirt graphics. Although I had been encouraged to by Photo Shop, I wanted a smaller $ step into graphics art and was introduced to Pixelmator.
But I don't even know enough about how to start creating my ideas....e.g. how to even create artful text...... Pixelmator has a good learning site, but all of their tutorials seem to assume a basic knowledge of this kind of software.
My sister suggested I try to hook-up with a tutor through an Apple Forum....
Suggestions please?!

The folks at PixelmatorTutorials.net have in my opinion the best tutorials to date for those who want to learn image editing. They have a series of tutorials called back to basics and these go into the details of image editing. Explaining everything from what a pixel is, to how it gets its color etc. They also explain the app itself in detail. I'd recommend following them. They usually pubilish 1 to 2 tutorials a week. They have some handy tips in every tutorial I watched so far. Like shorcuts that I never knew existed and are not even mentioned in the Pixelmator manual.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I have read so many comments about Flash being incompatible with Lion I was wondering whether to download it or not. So many sites on the Web still require flash, however, you almost don't have a choice but to download it even if it is incompatible. I gather a better version of Flash will be available for Lion soon. Again, thanks for the help. I will download the latest version of Flash.
