VERY Complicated iTunes/Time Capsule/Library Transfer Question

Hi all-- looking for some help before I move my beloved iTunes library (over 500GB) from an old PC to a brand spanking new MacBook Pro and a 1TB Time Capsule.
I want to store the music files on the Time Capsule and access everything wirelessly. When I am away from the apartment/TC, I'll usually have my iPod on me-- which I would just plug in and access it through iTunes.
MOST important would be to have everything transfer over and run clean and fast, without weird errors etc. If I can keep my old playlists/play counts/date added etc, great but not necessary.
Any thoughts on the best solution? Do I transfer/copy over using the new sharing function in iTunes? Or is it safer to just connect the hard drive to the computer/time capsule-- and from there, do I make a folder on the TC my default iTunes folder?
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated-- I went Apple (I also just bought an iPhone) for seamless and fast solutions, so I am hoping all this works!
Thanks,
Andrew

  • Slow Time Capsule file transfer to Itunes player

Lightning grounded into my house a week ago and so the TC had been blinking amber. well I was finally able to reset it by hitting the reset button and unplugging TC at same time then waiting for quick flashing and then plugging back in. also had to get a new wi fi router. well before that all happened I was able to click on a song in my TC and then it would for let's say a 20mb file take about 20-25 seconds to hear on Itunes. NOW after I had to reset TC it takes almost 5 minutes to download a 5mb song. any suggestions as why it is taking so long now. and how to fix. I have a 2008 Macbook. 10.5.8 operating system and TC 4th Generation. my new router is a Linksys E1500 Wireless N with Speed Boost. any help greatly appreciated.

After a lightning strike ethernet ports can be damaged.. check the actual ethernet speed as I stated by copying a file via finder to the TC and back to the Mac again. Use a single large file .. several hundred MB.. open the activity monitor and you can see the ethernet speed. If it is slow.. the port could have blown.. try other ports on the TC or try wireless.. with the ethernet disconnected.
If all the ports are damaged.. sorry but you need a new TC. There is no way to fix it.
You often find the port will have dropped to 10mbit.. that is very slow. If the fastest transfer speed you can get is around 10mbit you can suspect blown ports.
For  file storage use a true NAS.. synology or QNAP.. they are pretty well fully Mac compatible now.
At least they have proper raid setup and proper backup. All missing on the TC.

  • Itunes, Time Capsule and apple TV oh my

So currently i have a MBP 13" i just got a G4 Dual 1.25 to run as a Itunes server in my basement.
Here is my thought process so hopefully someone can help out.
I am either going to get an airport extreme anda USB drive or a Time Capsule not sure which yet but the principle is the same it will just come down to the deal i find.
I want to load all my music on the USB drive/Time capsule as well as TV shows/movies from itunes or vidoe files i already have(Converted to mp4)
So i will have both computers connect to the itunes library and everything should be great there correct each should be able to see all the media.
    Here is the questions now:
The G4 is going to be used to serve up airtunes as well through the house and depending on the mac announcment today i migh tget an apple tv as well. this should be ok right?
next itunes question we will do most of the mangement from the MBP so if i add a song to the itunes library from the MBP does the G4 Itunes automatically find it or does it need to be resync somehow? hopefully that makes sense?
Second question if i sync my/my wifes iphone to the MBP do we get the ituens library as well?
    Hopefully all this makes sense.
    thanks

so the Drive conected to the TC is essentially just there if you need it.
the drive (A) connected to the TC (or extreme) would hold your main library and would be accessed by both machines over the network.
however, a drive connected to a TC (or extreme) cannot be backed up using time machine. same goes for the TC's internal drive.
therefore my suggestion to periodically connect the drive to your Mac and use one of the apps above to backup drive A (main drive) to drive B.
you could of course connect drive A to the Mac, then use time machine to back it up to the TC. but, time machine is scheduled to run hourly backups and i feel it just isn't practical for your intended purpose.
kind of like what i do right now got an external that i connect to the MBP and then use time machine to back it up twice a week.
i don't think it is smart to have TM back up your system twice a week only. by default, TM runs hourly (but the frequency can be adjusted by way of 3rd party tools) and it might not be able to catch the file you deleted in between backups but it is just that file you need to restore.
my recommendation to you would be this setup:
    (a) get a TC for time machine backups of your Macs over the network and two USB drives for your iTunes library (one main and one backup ). USB drives are fairly cheap these days but you would be entrusting your precious media files to them.
follow this link for a choice of reliable external drives: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/.
    (b) connect USB drive A to the TC and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from the MBP to drive A using the finder.
    (c) on both Mac, launch iTunes *while pressing option* on your keyboard. when prompted, click on +choose library+ and navigate to the iTunes folder on drive A. remember, only one Mac @ a time can access the library !
    (d) every sunday (or whatever), disconnect drive A from the TC and hook it to your MBP. also hook drive B to the MBP and use either CCC or Chronosync to do incremental backups from A to B.
    (e) reconnect drive A to the TC.
be sure drive A is mounted on the desktop of either Mac before launching iTunes. you can have the drive mount automatically @ startup by adding it to your login items via system preferences > accounts > login items.

  • ITunes, Time Capsule and AirPort Express?

    Hi,
I'm planning on getting a Time Capsule to store all my CDs and my digital music one location.
Does anyone have any experience with these things?
I have a MacBook Pro with "only" a 100GB drive.
I want to "rip" all my CDs to iTunes, store them in a secondary library on the Time Capsule, then stream the music back to iTunes on my MacBook Pro and through the AirPort Express at my audio system. I'd prefer to store the music as aiff. Is the Time Capsule/AirPort-technology fast enough for this?
Another question; if a song is stored in iTunes as aiff and then sent to a iPod (3rd gen. nano), is it automatically converted to mp4 or is still aiff on the iPod?
    Best regards,
    Martin Markvoll

    Hi Martin,
what a co-incidence - i just bought an IMAC and also have the thought of archiving all my CD's (about 1000) on some kind of harddisc-server, and then be able to access this archive via my Imac (wirelessly), and stream the music to my Hifi system and feed it into my Digital/Analog Converter. Do you think the time capsule wld be ideal for the function of storing/archiving and streaming to the hifi system..? I guess I also need a seperate "Airport Express", as it has an optical- digital output into my Digital/Analog converter...
Thanks for your thoughts and kind regards from Singapore !

  • Itunes/Time Capsule/the cloud

I keep my iTunes library on a time capsule at home.  I use the same computer for home and work. When I go to work, and start iTunes - none of my music will stream via The Cloud.  I have uploaded, or  "matched" my library to the cloud.  Help?

    Thank you for your reply.
Not all of the music currently backed up on Time Capsule is of the same quality as the matched songs will be.  More specifically my question should have been:  Will I be able to download the higher quality "Matched" songs from iCloud on to my mac and then back them up on Time Capsule?
    Thanks for everyone's help.

  • Do i need a time capsule to transfer data

ok so this might have already been asked if it has i am sorry and please direct me to the thread where i can get the answer, thanks
so my problem is i am getting a new mac upgrading my macbook to a macbook pro and i was wondering if i need to purchase a time capsule/ wireless internet combo thing in order to get all of my info from my macbook itunes library to the new mac? meaning everything music, videos, etc. even if its not the only way, would it be one of the easiest, because i was really considering getting a time capsule anyway thanks and if i made anything unclear please let me know and ill try to clairify

No. If you have a simple FireWire cable, you will be able to connect one Mac to the other via FireWire Disk Mode. Then use Migration Assistant (During your initial launch of the new Mac) to transfer all of your files over. It should result in a virtually identical setup as your previous Mac.
Here is a KB article on how to set that up.

  • Time capsule ethernet transfer slow

I have a new 3 tb time capsule.  I have used it to back up my mac before doing a fresh install.  I also transfered my large 250gb iphoto library via ethernet cable to the time capsule in a seperate folder.  When I completed the new install of mountain lion I used migration assistant to transfer the base data and then individually transfered documents and sub folders with minial fuss. 50 gb taking 1hr.  I am now trying to transfer the iphoto library and it is giving me a 7-22 days transfer time.  This makes no sense, please advise.

Time estimates are displayed using the current connection rate.
It is normal for the backup to start quite slowly as it tries to analyze all of the data to be backed up or transferred,  and then speed up significantly for the bulk of the transfer and then slow down a bit toward the end of the backup.

  • ITunes Time Capsule restore to new Mac (Odd setup)

Previously I had an iMac with its iTunes library loaded on an external hard drive connected via USB. I also had a Time Capsule that was backing the iMac up including the external iTunes hard drive.
Well I finally upgraded to a new MacBook Pro. About two days later, the iTunes external hard drive died. So now I'm trying to figure out how can I restore my iTunes library from the Time Capsule to a new external hard drive. I tried the Migration Assistant and selected the Time Capsule option but no luck.
So how can I get that TC iTunes library from an old iMac on an external drive no longer available to a new Mac with a new external drive?
I was thinking I could try to hookup the new external drive to the old Mac and try the Time Machine.  Thoughts?  Please help!!

Time Capsule forum: https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/time_capsule.  Also, when you re-post in there it would be helpful to say what you mean by "trouble" and also let them know which iMac you are using and which version of OS X.  You have iOS 5.0.1 listed, but that is not the operating system on your iMac, iOS is for iPads, iPods i.e. iDevices.  Good luck.

  • ITunes & Time Capsule

    Hello
I'm sure this has been posted before, but I've yet to see a resolution. I have a Time Capsule and since upgrading to iTunes 8.2 (I think) the time it takes to load and playback some songs can take minutes.
I've read a few things about this (like unknown encoding formats as it plays nice with iTunes encoded files) but nothing seems to be definitive and so far there has been no fix.
Does anyone else have a Time Capsule with their library on it and suffer the same performance issues? I'd say 35% of my library has this problem - even songs I have recently purchased.
    Anyone know of any fixes?
    Cheers
    Dom

my personal preference would be a 2 TB external firewire 800 drive (connected directly to my Mac) as residence for my iTunes lib in conjunction with a 2 TB time capsule to which both my Mac and the external HD are backed up

  • Apple TV/Time Capsule/Mac Mini question

    Ok here is the setup.
I have a Mac Mini running iTunes with a wired connection to Time Capsule. I have an Apple TV wireless connected to the network and stream content from the Mac Mini.
    1) The Mac Mini will not see Apple TV is I hook Apple TV with a wired connection - only wireless. Any idea why a wired connection won't work?
    2) Apple TV loses connection several times a week to the Mac Mini. Any reason why it can't hold the connection?
    3) I only want to stream content from the Mac Mini to the Apple TV, I don't need to sync. Is there any easier way to set the iTunes to stream not sync. It is a pain having to set custom sync and then go through each tab and de-select sync.
    Thanks for any info.
    Jeff

    1) I have a cable modem and I am using the Time Capsule for the wireless, so I believe everything is on the same subnet. Not sure why the Mac Mini/iTunes won't see a wired Apple TV.
    What is distributing IP addresses
    2) Not sure, what would be causing the interference, but I will check it out. I would prefer to run every wired, but haven't been able to get iTunes to see the Apple TV wired.
Interference can be caused by a nearby network on the same channel (or in some cases a neighbouring channel), and household items such as a cordless phone or microwave.
    3) I am using my primary library on my Mac Mini and streaming it to the Apple TV. I was just wondering if there was an easier way to select to stream items. Seems like there should be three options: 1) Sync, 2) Custom Sync, 3) Stream.
There is no stream option since by default everything that isn't synced will be streamed (with one exception, See This)

  • Airport Extreme and Time Capsule – A few questions

    Hey guys,
I have a Belkin Modem/Router with a USB port for storage, but I just found out it only has 10/100 Ethernet, and can only mount 1 hard drive to that storage port. Other than that, it works fine and I am happy with it. Its stated wireless speed is 300mbps, and it supports 802.11n draft 2.0.
I also just got a Mac, and was considering a Time Capsule for using Time Machine (Or, because am also considering a Drobo, just a straight Airport Extreme).
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there any point in keeping the Belkin to use as my modem if it’s got 10/100 Ethernet ports? Will that make the Time Capsule/APE (And hence the attached drives/devices) perform at the slower speed?
    2. I don’t know if I can just “turn off” the Belkins Router abilities anyway. Assuming I can’t, will having 2 routers on my network even be possible? (Mac’s software is infinitely more user friendly, and I’d want to use it for my network).
    3. Is there a limit to how many Hard Drives I can connect to an Airport Extreme/Time Capsule? (My Belkin can only share one, even via a USB Hub – it only sees the first drive.)
    4. For now, my storage drives are standard HDD’s from WD and Seagate, but I am considering a Drobo (Some form of RAID storage is happening in the next few months, for sure).
    In either case:
    a) Will Airport Extreme recognize my External Hard Drive as a Time Machine Backup Destination? (And as a Drive to store other media)
    b) Will Time Capsule recognize my external hard drive, in addition to itself (Since it’s also a Hard Drive?)
    5. This page: ((http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/features/harddrivesharing.html)  says: “You can set up password-protected accounts for everyone on the network or allow read-only access to certain files and folders.”
Some folders, I don’t even want to allow read only access to. Can I require a password before they can be viewed, or modified/deleted? (If I go the time capsule rout, I would want to protect the drives attached to it, and probably not the HD on the capsule itself).
    6. Also, the rest of my computers are PC’s, and I was wondering if it’s possible (and safe) to set up time machine to backup to the time capsule for Mac, and allow the other PC’s to backup to it using their version of “Time Machine” too?
I know this will leave less room for mac and PC backups, but it would free up room on my Drobo / HDD’s
    7. Can Time Machine backup wirelessly to other drives, such as http://shop.nextbyte.com.au/Script/MCH/Products/532195-NextByte-WDBACG0020HCHAES N-WD-My-Book-Live-2TB
Thanks so much for your help.
P.S. Can anyone recommend a good modem to use with the Airprort/Time Capsule?

    No help?

  • Using Time Capsule to transfer data to a new machine

I have just taken possession of a new iMac. I need to transfer the data from my old one and wondered if Time Capsule was the most efficient way of doing this.
I understand that there is a transfer utility built into the Mac OS which allows you to transfer data from one machine to another via Firewire, but it occurred to me that my Time Machine might provide a quicker and easier way of doing it.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

I would go with FireWire. Boot the old Mac into "target disk mode" by holding down the "T" key while it is booting. Then connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable and launch the Migration Assistant utility.
If your Time Machine backup is on your network (rather than being directly connected), transferring the data from the other computer over FireWire is probably going to be a lot faster.

  • Time Capsule file transfer - why so slow?

I've got a simultaneous dual-band Time Capsule serving as a router for my network, which includes a newer Macbook Pro and an older PowerPC G5.
When I transfer a 2GB file directly from the G5 to the MBP (this is of course going through the TC as the router), it takes about 95 seconds, which is 22 MB/s or 172 Mbps if you prefer.
When I transfer the same file from the G5 to the Time Capsule's drive, it takes about 190 seconds, about 11 MB/s or 86 Mbps.
Why is the Time Capsule's drive so much slower? Are these speeds typical for the TC, for example, when you are using Time Machine to back up? (I don't use Time Machine myself, because I'm running Tiger.)
When I hook the two computers directly to each other using ethernet, the same file takes 80 seconds to transfer (25 MB/s or 205 Mpbs).

Well, that is a disappointment. And somewhat puzzling, given that TC is supposed to be a backup solution. You'd think it would be fast. I don't think the drive hardware itself is slow, given what I've read about them (Hitachi Deskstar?).
I have the book you mention and looked up the quote. It also says, "This is partly due to inefficiencies in copying many small files in Apple Filing Protocol
(AFP), and partly due to the low-power, but adequate, processor in the Extreme N (both models)."
The AFP possibly explains why my G5 (Tiger) is slower at writing to the Time Capsule than my husband's Macbook Pro (Leopard).

  • HT5097 connect a macbook to a time capsule to transfer data?

I don't have a Mac, just a macbook.  It doesn't have an ethernet port.  So, how do I connect it to my time capsule so that I can transfer the data from my old time capsule to the newer one?

Are you accessing the old Time Capsule by Wi-FI? Try hooking the new Time Capsule to the old Time capsule to see if they will both show up in Finder. If so, copy your files across.

  • Time Capsule Pre-Purchase questions.......

    1. Is the power supply 30watts?
    2. Does the unit itself generally run hot? I would expect the heat to increase when the drive is in heavy use, but under general use with the odd Time Machine backup will the unit remain hot?
    3. How long have you had your unit and how reliable has it been? - Im reading many reviews of units failing after 7 or so months of use - which would be a pain considering its supposed to be the main source of backup etc!
    4. Is the unit noisy??

My 1TB Time Capsule is labeled 100-240V, 1A, rather than in watts. The manual doesn't seem to have any more detail.

I would describe mine a "warm".

A 500GB model that I bought in May of 2008 is still running. I bought my latest unit in August of 2009.

    Mine is very quiet.
