I thought that AppleCare doesn't necessarily cover batteries unless they're "defective" and there isn't necessarily any magic number. 300 is just Apple's typical number where they expect maybe 80% of the charge to be left. In my experience, rechargeable batteries can rapidly deteriorate at a certain point where the capacity loss just sort of cascades.
I understand the point though - that it's so far along that AppleCare won't cover it as a matter of course. However - I've heard of people with maybe 200-250 cycles where Apple didn't replace the battery (showing maybe 70% health) under AppleCare since it was early but fairly normal capacity loss.
