Very Disapointed in Black and White conversion in CS4

In CS3 it was great to have the hue/sat sliders right there and to be able to watch the image as I changed it.
The CS4 BW window is a MAJOR disappointment.
Now we have to click the color box and click again and again and keep clicking if we want to make minor changes.
No refinement here.
The way it was in CS3 you could slide left and right and watch the image change while you were sliding.
No need to add a hue and sat layer afterwards.
Can't believe they took this away.
HUGE disappointment in Adobe for having done this to us.

Well, it looks cyan to me. Here it is with saturation boost - assuming the OP made the screenshot correctly, assigning the display profile:
In any case, the Photoshop bug is well known and well documented, showing up as cyan shadow banding in ProPhoto files, when GPU is set to "Normal" or "Advanced" mode.
I'm not saying the display profile isn't involved, it most certainly is. The whole issue is the conversion into the display profile. And it also shows to varying degree with different display profiles - sometimes just subtle cyan bands, easily missed until you look for it, other times more pronounced and with secondary red banding (like here).
It also happens with sRGB as display profile. So the bug is real, no question about that.
What's different here is that there's cyan also in the highlights. But that could be the screenshot - or it could be "just" a bad display profile. I'm not ruling that out, just pointing out that there is a more likely explanation in this case.

  • Black and White conversion issues going from LR to PS

    When I take a black and white image directly from Lightroom to Photoshop using "Edit in Photoshop", the black and white conversion doesn't stay true. My image, once opened in PS, is mostly black and white, but has green and magenta casts running throughout. Anyone know how to resolve this without just gray scaling the image again once in PS?
    Screen grab from LR on the left, and PS on the right.
    Thanks.

  • Batch Black and White Conversions

    Hi,
    I've been trying to use the life and stamp tool to batch convert some images to black and white (using the monochrome mixer). Basically even trying to convert one image that way freezes my machine (powerbook 1.67 gH, 2 megs RAM) and I have to reboot.
    Anybody have any suggestions....I guess this kind of batch conversion w. the lift and stamp tool must be very processor intensive? Even so....you'd think it could handle one! I did have some other adjustments on the image....filter, levels and sharpening.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hello, lisa & scott
    scott has some good advice for you except for one statement he made which is misleading and has been circulating around the mac internet news forums misleading readers and I would like a chance to squelch it once and for all:
    Quote: "but really, this repair permissions action is starting to have a bit of "voodoo" status in OS X troubleshooting circles. i'm not sure that it will help with your slow-downs in Aperture though."
    For the record, my recommendations are Apple text book troubleshooting regimens (Mac OS X Support Essentials, Owen Linzmayer, ©2006). I am an Apple Certified Pro Trainer, I help maintain the numerous mac computers in the classrooms where I teach. If this is voodoo, as scott is suggesting, then Apple has been totally wrong in recommending this systematic methodical troubleshooting regimen.
    How do we answer any question in any forum as to why is this problem is happening to you? and not to others? or, maybe to others? There needs to be a starting base or instructions if the problem is not a known issue or if the problem cannot be verified on the systems on our end.
    The recommendations I have made are painless, harmless and the least invasive. It will dump a lot of temporary files, font cache, get the OS X talking to it's respective files, directories, volumes, etc. it is the first step in finding out if the problem is
    1. User-Related
    2. Software-Related
    3. OS-Related
    4. Hardware-Related
    Among other things some application problems can be OSX based and not the application itself. Repairing Disk Permissions in Safe Boot Mode is an excellent starting place.
    As an example, many times when an application freezes or gets the spinning beachball, clicking on the Desktop and Repairing Permissions will clear the freeze and the beachball and quickly get you up and running again.
    Besides this lisa, scott has given you some very good advice
    Take care you two

  • Black and white conversion of tiff files in pse6

    I like the "convert to black and white" utility in pse, but was disheartened to discover that it doesn't seem to work with tiff files. Also, the "adjust smart fix" and "auto red eye" options are not available with tiff files either. Is there a way around this?

  • Black and White conversion

    Has anyone worked on finding greyscale conversion 'slider recipes' that give a similar look to various popular films. Would appreciate if you could share some of these.
    Cheers
    Kev.

    onOne offers a set of 85 Lightroom Presets, which includes 10 black and white presets you might find worthwhile. You can download them for free at the bottom of the page in the following link:
    http://www.ononesoftware.com/downloads/
    If you have PhotoShop, you might also find their plug-in called PhotoTools helpful. It has three times as many presets (in the professional version), but does not work in Elements. Check out the video tutorials about using the library, using presets, and using the stack, along with the four real-world examples of how to apply the presets at the bottom of the list at this link:
    http://www.ononesoftware.com/tutorials/tutorials_phototools.php
    I currently have Elements6, and onOne's Plug-in Suite4. The fact that PhotoTools is not compatible with PE6 makes me want PhotoShop even more. Fact is, the only reason I haven't upgraded to that is I am waiting for CS Next before doing so.
    There are also presets made available by other users... some free, some not, at the following link:

  • Multiple Black and white conversion from raw or jpgs

    Hi All
    Any help would be appreciated.
    I have 300 wedding images taken on raw and jpg. I now want to convert them all to black and white. Any way I can do this without doing it one at a time (whether using raw or jpg files)?
    Hope someone has the answer or else I need to fork out £500 for CS4!!
    Clive

    Hi
    Thanks for reply. I am able to open and convert from raw ok, what I don’t know if I can do is process multiple files that have been changed, i.e. to black and white?
    I don’t think PE8 will actually do this.

  • Raw Black and White (CR2 Cannon) process in color

    I'm shooting black and white in raw/cr2 mode, and when I process them through Bridge / CS2, etc., they always come up color, not b&w. The same occurs with Picasa and other raw processing packages. Any ideas how to keep them B&W, rather than converting to it after processing?
    thx!!

    By its very nature RAW images are color because color is captured by the
    sensor and raw is simply the raw data captured by the sensor. If you want
    black and white from the camera then you would have to shoot JPG or TIFF if
    your camera offers TIFF. Now the black and white marker should be included
    in the RAW file so if your use the software that came with your camera then
    it is very likely that software would see that marker indicating that you
    had black and white turned on and simply convert the color RAW to black and
    white and show you that. You might think that you are getting a black and
    white RAW file but you aren't it is just the camera makers software seeing a
    simple flag and then doing the black and white conversion. Since these flags
    are generally proprietary Adobe doesn't read them.
    In the end you are better off doing the conversion to black and white
    yourself. There are many ways of doing it even in Adobe Camera RAW and you
    will always get better results.

  • How to convert only part of a picture to black and white?

    Hello.  I just received PSE 8.  I want to convert a photo of my daughter to b&w but I want to leave her eyes blue.   Anyone know how I can do this?  Thanks so much.

    1. Find the smart brush tool (the brush with the gears on it)
    2. Select a black and white conversion style in the options bar
    3. Turn on Inverse
    4. Drag over the eyes (they will stay blue and the rest of the photo will become b&w). If you turn Inverse off, the eyes will become b&w and the rest of the photo will stay in color

  • After turning an image black and white, how can I color in a certain area?

    After turning an image black and white, how can I color in a certain area?

    How did you change it? Did you make your B&W on a separate layer? If so, just erase the part of the layer you don't want, or add a layer mask and paint with black over the parts you want to hide.
    If not, then you can copy/paste the original photo (you will need to press ctrl+A/cmd+A to select all before you can copy) into the new image. From there it depends on the relative proportions of B&W. Arrange the two layers so the one with the most area that you want to keep is on top, and either mask out the rest or just erase it away.
    For future reference, an easier way to do this when starting from scratch is to use the smart brush. Choose a black and white conversion style, turn on the inverse checkbox and paint over the part you want in color. The rest of the photo turns black and white, leaving what you paint over in the original colors.

    Under the Effects-Lumetri Looks-Desaturation choose a B and W effect. Then add the luma corrector from the Video effects-colour correction section. Adjust the brightness and contrast to get the effect you want.

  • Converting a PDF to pure black and white

    I'm currently attempting to convert a PDF of any colorspace (RGB, CMYK, Grayscale etc) to black and white.
    Currently I'm walking the PDF using Adobe PDFLibrary, separating the contained PDEElements and identifying them (Image, text, etc).
    Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed from here? I figure the actual conversion operation will have to be written from scratch, as Adobe doesn't seem to support this. However, I'm having a hard time determining the colors of each object. I suppose I could rasterize everything and convert pixel by pixel, but I'd like to avoid that and preserve vector images and such if at all possible.
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Yes, I'm aware that there is no monochrome colorspace. However, wouldn't it be possible (likely at a very low level) to fetch and modify the colors of elements manually?
    I suspect the initial thing to do is convert images to the DeviceGray colorspace and work from there, so I have a uniform colorspace to work with when performing this operation.
    I've noticed that if I pull the ImageData object out of a PDEImage, I get an array of bytes that appear to be pixel by pixel color data. Now, in doing this have I rasterized the image? What would happen to vector images if this array were to be modified?

  • Colored objects in black and white pictures?

    How can i take a white and green dress to have just the green pop out but yet have the reamining picture be in black and white? Thanks

    Just desaturating can produce a rather flat image, though, and this method may give you a very peculiar shade of green, not the one you wanted.
    If the photo is in color, it's better and easier to just get out the selection brush (the one with the gears on it), select a B&W conversion style in the options bar, turn on the inverse checkbox and drag across the dress (assuming it's already the color you want). The rest of the photo will turn black and white, leaving the dress in color.

  • How to identify black and white images for dynamic collection ?

    Hello
    I would like to make a dynamic collection to quickly find my black & white pictures. It is very easy to do with your original files which have undergone a black and white (Grey) conversion under the developpement module : you have to specify "treatment - is - Grey level" in the dynamic collection description.
    But what about original Grey levels images ? I have some scans of black and white negatives, and I would like to see them in the same collection.
    I have tried to use EXIF metada, but none of them is related to this information (neither does IPTC). But such images are well detected as Grey levels images in the development module...
    I don't know how to do (unless manually tagging images of course).
    Does anybody have a clue for an automated solution ?
    Thanks

    yes Eclipse 2.0 provides runtime chartting.
    Please refer to this thread
    [chartting|Re: Charts won't appear in CR Viewer?]
    void AddChart(ReportClientDocument clientDoc, String chartTitle)
      ChartDefinition chartDefinition = new ChartDefinition();
      chartDefinition.setChartType(ChartType.group);
      IDataDefinition dataDefinition = clientDoc.getDataDefController().getDataDefinition();
      Fields conditionFields = new Fields();
      IField field = dataDefinition.getGroups().getGroup(0).getConditionField();
      conditionFields.addElement(field);
      chartDefinition.setConditionFields(conditionFields);
      Fields dataFields = new Fields();
      for (int i = 0; i < dataDefinition.getSummaryFields().size(); i++)
        IField summaryField = dataDefinition.getSummaryFields().getField(i);
        dataFields.addElement(summaryField);
      chartDefinition.setDataFields(dataFields);
      ChartObject chartObject = new ChartObject();
      chartObject.setChartDefinition(chartDefinition);
      ChartStyleType chartStyleType = ChartStyleType.pie;
      AreaSectionKind chartPlacement = AreaSectionKind.pageHeader;
      chartObject.getChartStyle().setType(chartStyleType);
      chartObject.setChartReportArea(chartPlacement);
      chartObject.getChartStyle().getTextOptions().setTitle(chartTitle);
      chartObject.setHeight(5000);
      chartObject.setWidth(5000);
      chartObject.setTop(1000);
      IArea reportHeaderArea = reportDefController.getReportDefinition().getReportHeaderArea();
      Section chartSection =(Section)reportHeaderArea.getSections().getSection(0);
      clientDoc.getReportDefController().getReportObjectController().add(chartObject, chartSection, 1);
    Further you can format the fields as per your requirement.
    Hope this helps

  • My Imac has black and white vertical lines

    Riddle me this Apple...
    A few months ago, my 2008 Aluminium 24inch Imac locked up and exhibited space invader style pixels all over the screen.
    After rebooting, it was fine for a while and then it would freeze again and I'd get the same Atari style pixels appearing, and everything would be frozen.
    Then, most reboots after that, I would get vertical lines in groups of three, alternating black and white squares as in the photo.
    I called Apple here in South Australia, and they said "it's your graphics card, and it will cost $400 to fix and we need it for a week".
    Not wanting to do that, I bought a $15 firewire cable, booted the Imac in T mode and used my PC laptop running macdrivepro to save all my files onto a 500gig backup drive, and then proceeded to fix the corrupted kext files and most importantly delete the recent flash player update which I believe was causing the problem.
    Booted her back up, and she ran perfectly. For a few weeks, until it started again.
    So I re-installed the Leopard operating system from the original disks, and that fixed it. $15 is better than $400.
    Now, a few months have passed, and the problem had come back again, now that I have added more stuff on my computer.
    This time however, I chose to wipe the drive completely and do a fresh install of Leopard, and then upgrade to Snow Leopard.
    The problem is that it won't boot from the CD drive anymore, won't boot from a thumb drive, won't boot in any mode except T mode, but then it has these lines on the screen again and eventually I get the kernel panic happenning and it wants to be shut down.
    Every time I start the computer, these lines IMMEDIATELY appear. I've tried resetting the Pram, tried changing memory and have now resorted to surgery.
    I've taken apart the Imac, yes I hear you Apple...you guys thought that we mortals wouldn't delve into the depths of your finely machined systems, however, some of us do own micro torx head tools to remove those pesky screws, and yes, a razor blade does lift up the magnetically attached screen glass without having to use suction pads.
    So once inside the temple of doom, I removed the hard drive, and dropped it into a hard drive dock.
    After days of messing around with it via four other MAC computers, running Tiger, Leopard and Lion, we have still not been able to install an operating system back onto this drive.
    Does anyone have any insight into what these lines actually are? Every one I speak to says a different thing...
    "It's the graphics card", "It's the hard drive", "It's the cable that connects the LCD screen", "It's the motherboard", It's the screen itself", "It's a corrupted bios" etc etc..
    But if it's any of those things...then why did it run perfectly after I fixed it the first time?
    Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi BDAqua,
    I appreciate you taking the time to reply, and for the suggestions.
    My spider sense was tingling, as were my eager fingers to login and read your reply, in fact I was almost salivating at the thought of crushing those Apple reps with a swift blow from one of my megalithic old 4gig internal drives, or better still, perhaps shooting my old DX266 sporting a massive 256k HD and 4mb of ram, fully loaded with Encarta and Windows 3.11 out of a cannon and straight into Steve Jobs bedroom window, with a note saying..."How'd ya like them apples..".
    But alas, my Aquatic friend, I am in need of a functioning operating system to be able to do any of those magical tricks you suggested (insert frown face here)..and yes, when I finally opened up the Imac and peered inside, a moment not unlike Indiana Jones peering down into the depths of the Well of Souls, I suddenly realised that an Imac might look impervious to heat vision and thermonuclear devices on the outside, but inside they can still gather as much dust as my infinately useless ZIP drive that I bought back in the late 90's, thinking it was the best thing since the invention of microsoft paint...awesome program by the way guys..
    Getting back to the problem at hand, the issue really is that I have, perhaps stupedly, reformatted the 500gig WD drive via a hard drive dock, which is really a lot like one of those early 1950's cassette drives you find in vintage cars..
    And upon returning the drive to the Imac and re-assembling it WITH REAL SCREWS, not titanium-alloy fingerprint encoded ones like you would expect to find in Iron Man's suit, I could only boot the poor thing into T mode. No other modes were available, and believe me, I tried all of the alphabet...even the "C" button, which if you ever watched an episode of Knight Rider called Knight of the Juggernaught, did not turn my computer into a convertable..
    By now you're probably sensing that the irony of all of this is that I am typing this message on my Windows 7 upgraded HP laptop, which sounds not unlike a jumbo jet taking off at times, the fans are so loud, and among other things, it keeps telling me it is not genuine, even though I paid good money for a proper copy to free me from the painful experience which was Vista, and so in a sense, microsoft is playing a small part in the desperate rescue of it's far superior, yet broken down and busted arch enemy...I bet somewhere in it's RAM, it is smiling in little ones and zeroes, while it hides behind a free copy of AVAST, hoping one of a billion nasty viruses don't come knocking on the kernel door..
    The next round of drinks goes to the man, woman, child or droid that has any other suggestions that could allow me to participate in some of the ideas put forward by our very knowledgable watery friend..as alas, I do not have any of those options available to me.
    Today's assignment is.. how do we install an operating system on a formatted external drive. Sounds easy doesn't it...I've read many articles, but in practice it's proved as elusive as Bigfoot.
    I just cannot make this hard drive understand that there is no spoon...
