Very helpful error message: "An unknown error occurred (-12939)

My iPhone will now play nothing that hasn't already been downloaded to it via Match. 'Use Cellular Data' is set to ON.
Sometimes after tapping the Play icon an error message will pop up after a while: 'Unable to Download Songs - An unexpeced error occurred (-12939)' with buttons 'Done' and 'Retry'. 'Retry' results in the same condition.
But most of the time when I tap the Play icon, the progress bar sits at 0:00 with no indication that it's even trying to download the track.
This occurs whether I'm accessing via WiFi or via a 5-bar 4G signal.
It hasn't always been like this - do you know what -12939 means?
Since Apple refuses to support this product, some 'regular' person must have access to the error codes, no?

This alert is often caused by cryptographic issues with your Windows installation.
If you have broadband access (cable, DSL, or other high-speed access), try turning your modem off for a minute and then turning it back on. If you also have a router connected to the modem, turn it off for a minute and then back on again. Once you've established a web connection, try accessing the iTunes Store again from iTunes.
Check for updates to Windows, or search Microsoft's support pages for KB931125. Install the latest available update for root certificates from the Microsoft Download Center.
If the issue continues, follow the steps in the Microsoft knowledge base article KB822798 to resolve the issue. Note that while the Microsoft article describes a different issue, both issues share the same cause and solution.

I had the same problem so (assuming under the Purchased items in the Store you have a song stuck at 'Downloading'):
I went to Music, then Artists.
From there I chose the album.
The song that failed to download had the cloud symbol next to it.
I clicked the cloud symbol and the song completed the download for me.
(Please note this was in iTunes for Windows - I expect it to be similar in iTunes for Apple)

When I called the support at AT&T they think the phone is shot and it is a hardware thing but i have a hard time believing that when it happened when I sync'd it to my computer. It did get progressively worse though, at first it crashed not that often and then got worse. So restores are failing, recovery, everything. Anyone run into this?

Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Verify the computer's date and time are accurate.
Check that your security or firewall software is not interfering with ports 80 or 443, or with the server gs.apple.com.
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
An entry in your hosts file may be redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see "Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com" above).
Internet proxy settings can cause this issue. If you are using a proxy, try without using one.
Test restoring while connected to a known-good network.

If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software. If the errors persist on another computer and known-good USB cable, the device may need service.

Having done quite a number of changes in iWeb and have tried to publish and getting "An unknown error has occured"
Played about a bit and on two occasions had a fail to open situation as I had recently when OLD TOAD SORTED ME OUT>

You can turn all of them back on by selecting the Normal Startup option under the General tab of the System Configuration Utility window, but please note that this may cause the issue to reoccur.
If you are able to isolate the issue to a particular third-party software, you may wish to contact them to let them know of the conflict.

These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:

Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
Try a different Dock Connector or Lightning Connector to USB cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. An incorrectly set default packet size can cause this error. Contact the software manufacturer that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Unable to log on with apple ID - error message "an unknown error has occurred"

When I try and log on to apple website using my apple ID, I get an error message saying "an unknown error has occurred". How can I fix this?
I've changed my password several times and was able to successfully make a purchase from Itunes using new password, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

For whatever reason, I can now log in to the apps store with one of my ids. It says my other account no longer exists so I can not update pages and numbers. It will not let me rebuy these programs under the working account because my computer recognizes that I bought them before.
