Very high HDD load/unload cycles and hardware ECC (SMART)

Hello,
I just took a look at my Seagate HDDs SMART values and found 2 very high numbers:
Load/Unload Cycle Count: 29.422, and increasing +1 like every 15 seconds, together with a clunking noise.
Hardware ECC Recovered: 320.239.221, and increasing +10 or more like every second.
The Load/Unload stuff seems to be aggressive power management of either the drive itself or the OS, I have no clue how to stop this. I tried keeping the drive busy with declunk, but it still parks the heads every few seconds.
But what is Hardware ECC ? And can anyone give me an advice on how to stop my drive moving the heads to the parking position every 15 seconds ? When I used Tiger, opening Photo Booth did the trick, doesn't work on Leopard tho. The HDD is less than 1 month old...

I too was getting so annoyed by the clunking sounds. The APM settings for the HDD are obviously out of whack completely. Tried Declunk which has been mentioned in other threads in the forums. It basically runs as a daemon making a small file and then deleting it every 5 seconds. I got it to work, but I had to introduce an additional parameter string to force it to create the file every 4 seconds. Visit http://kiza.kcore.de/software/declunk/ for more information on this issue.
Overall, I was still unhappy with the solution. Creating a file ever few seconds isn't optimal.
Having tested disabling the APM settings with hdparm for WinXP (Via Bootcamp) and found that it fixed the clunking sound, I knew that APM was definitely causing the sound. Of course, hdparm did not update the firmware of the hdd, so every time I powered down my MBP, the hdd would go back to APM being on "FULL" bringing
back the "clunk" sound.
The ideal solution was to obtain some kind of APM management software for OSX. Unfortunately, the historical application known as APM Tuner X was no longer being developed by the author and does not run in Leopard.
Thats when I found HDAPM!!!
http://mckinlay.net.nz/hdapm/
How did you determine the load/unload cycles for your HDD? In the end I located a copy of smartmon for Windows and booted into WinXp (via Bootcamp). I think my cycles are up to over 100,000... Not sure how to easily tell?!
Anyway, I hope that this solves your issue. Apple's Energy Saving system preference pane SHOULD disable putting the hard disk to sleep if left unchecked, but I also believe this is an issue with many HDD's. Seagate are shocking when it comes to releasing firmware upgrades too by the looks of things.

  • New HDD Load / Unload Cycle Count increasing extremely fast !

    Hi all
    I just upgrade my Pavilion dv5 HDD. The new model is Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 (HTS725050A9A364). However, I found my new HDD's Load / Unload Cycle Count increasing extremely fast!
    Until now the number of Load / Unload Cycle is 12,127. However, the new HDD only power on 137hours. (About 1 week of my use.)  The data below is my new HDD's SMART data (by EVEREST 5.50):
    ID
    01    Raw Read Error Rate    62    100    100    0

    I'm pretty sure that the data is correct, because I can hear the HDD's Load / Unload sound very frequently. The C1 row increase about 2,000 per day.  However my previous Hitachi 5K320 has no problem. The running operating system are both Windows 7.
    I'm so worry about this. As you know, laptop HDD's L / UL Cycle is designed at 600,000. If my HDD continue increasing like this, it will reach this number in a very short time. Any one can help me?

    It's a feature of modern 2.5" harddisks , the disk parks the head when its been inactive for a while, to avoid damage , uses less power , and reduces the heat etc gives the harddisk a better looking spec sheet , its meant to park its head after being inactive for a long time around an hour with proper management from the bios/os of the head parking feature, because there is nothing to manage this feature in hp's bios or os the disk parks the head about every minute for no reason then after 1 second the head goes back on the disk thats 1 load/unload cycle , it also effects performance as the head has to find its place back on the disk , load times will decrease by alot , videos will stutter the first few secs, i have the same problem but not as bad after 130 hours i had a count of around 1,250 load/unloads , different brands of disk have different idle timers plus i use utorrent which stops the harddisk from idling so much, there are a couple of solutions, you can find a tool to update/mod the harddisk firmware to increase the idle timer ( i decided against this as you can permently brake the harddrive and void the warrenty) , contact hp and request a bios update with proper management or the harddisk head parking feature i.e tell the harddisk it is idle after an hour, the temperary solutions are download hd tune and run it all the time this stops the harddisk from parking its head as it doesn't let it go idle , or the solution i am using at the moment download a programme called HDD scan , everytime you turn on/off  you have to run the prog go to tasks/features/ide features set the advance power management from its default value to 254 then press set, no more unnessary load/unloads, downside is the disk runs a couple of 0c hotter mine still never goes above 40c even under full load thanks to a active cooling pad, also its less well protected against shock.

  • T400s Hard Drive Clicking - Load/unload cycle count SMART Attribute decreasing very quickly

    Hi,
    I get a T400s 2808 CVG. I degrade to XP Pro SP3.
    The Hard-drive is Toshiba MK2529CSG.
    I experience Hardrive clicking (or ticking) when the hard drive is idle. Forcing the drive to be busy silences the ticking sound.
    On the other hand I get the issue that "Load unload cycle count" SMART attribute is  decreasing very quickly. I loose 1 point each 4 or 5 days.
    I also make a little test to check the correlation between the reported number of load unload cycle count and the ticking sound.
    Postive. Each time I hear the tick, each time the SMART attribute report one more Load/unload cycle count.
    Any one get the same issue?
    Any solution?
    I already see and read http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_hard_drive_clicking
    Thanks and regards,
    Patrick

    any harddisk that make any unusual mechanical noises probably means the the harddisk will die soon

  • Very high server load

    Hi,
    I have run into an issue with very high server load on a OES11sp2 server.
    After a lot of troubleshooting we found that the cause was the adminusd process.
    Last month i patched the server and we upgraded to novell-nss-4.16.4940-0.5.9, this contains the new adminusd component.
    Specifically we found that it was related to volume space restrictions.
    After turning volume space restrictions off the load of the server dropped from 10+ down to 0.66 (atm).
    The strange thing was that adminusd wasn't showing up in top directly, but the us% was very high.
    The problem only pops up when a lot of people are logged in and drops off again when the number is low.
    Any idea to what is going on?
    Cheers,
    Frank

    hi all,
    I checked the environment again,
    then came to know that my SAN is not connected through FIbre Channel or any other faster channel to the Server and its connected through 100MBPs line... this was causing the slow and also there was a lot IO wait in my Oracle VM server.
    Thanks,
    Sri.

  • Very high log file sequential read and control file sequential read waits?

    I have a 10.2.0.4 database and have 5 streams capture processes running to replicate data to another database. However I am seeing very high
    log file sequential read and control file sequential read by the capture procesess. This is causing slowness in the database as the databass is wasting so much time on these wait events. From AWR report
    Elapsed: 20.12 (mins)
    DB Time: 67.04 (mins)
    and From top 5 wait events
    Event Waits Time(s) Avg Wait(ms) % Total Call Time Wait Class
    CPU time 1,712 42.6
    log file sequential read 99,909 683 7 17.0 System I/O
    log file sync 49,702 426 9 10.6 Commit
    control file sequential read262,625 384 1 9.6 System I/O
    db file sequential read 41,528 378 9 9.4 User I/O
    Oracle support hasn't been of much help, other than wasting my 10 days and telling me to try this and try that.
    Do you have streams running in your environment, are you experiencing this wait. Have you done anything to resolve these waits..
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forums.
    There is insufficient information in what you have posted to know that your analysis of the situation is correct or anything about your Streams environment.
    We don't know what you are replicating. Not size, not volume, not type of capture, not rules, etc.
    We don't know the distance over which it is being replicated ... 10 ft. or 10 light years.
    We don't have any AWR or ASH data to look at.
    etc. etc. etc. If this is what you provided Oracle Support it is no wonder they were unable to help you.
    To diagnose this problem, if one exists, requires someone on-site or with a very substantial body of data which you have not provided. The first step is to fill in the answers to all of the obvious first level questions. Then we will likely come back with a second level of questioning.
    But when you do ... do not post here. Your questions are not "Database General" they are specific to Streams and there is a Streams forum specifically for them.
    Thank you.

  • Diff. times are taken to complete load unload archive and unarchive

    Hi All,
    I am facing a problem with loading  unloading archiving and unarchiving repository.
    Problem is Everyday it is taking different to complete the process. Is the time deneds on the data and images availavle in the repository?
    If large amount of data is there then it will take more time to complete all these process or large amount of user are log in it will take more time to unload?
    Please Suggest
    Thanks

    Hi Shalini,
    The repository Archieving and Unarchieving operations involves the data base.
    I mean Repository  tables and fields and the data of the repository are in the underlying database and You can backup an MDM repository using the MDM archiving mechanism.That will save the repository scema .a2a file for furthere refrence.This schema contains the tables and fields inside the tables and all these things are storesd on the DBMS level.So suppose next time when you unarchieve the repository and made some changes like
    1.You have added some new Tables and Fields.
    2.You have added new Data.
    And all this is getting stored at the database leve at the end.
    In this case the amount of data of your repository in terms of Tables and Fields or Data at the DBMS Level.So next time when you  take archieve of your Repository It will take some extra time as compare to the previous one.And same thing will happen in case of Unarchieving because this time some new tables and their fields  and some new data(images,pdfs etc) they all will be unarchieved as a Part of Repository so it will take a bit extra time to Unarchieve.
    Same thing will happen in case of Loading and Unloading as the tables ,fields and amount of data increases the time to load and unload will also increases.
    At the time of loading the repository You can go to your MDM Server and check that repository in status it will show checking image ID's ,processing tables,processing sound tables,loading search indexes etc.
    Making a few minor adjustment with MDM and/or the DBMS server can enhance search and update performance by 10% to 20%.
    SQL Serveru2019s performance increases by about 10% when the main data file (.mdf) and the transaction log file (.ldf) are located on separate spindles. Remember that this means using different drives, not just
    different drive letters.
    Reward if Helpfull.

  • Flash causes very high CPU load (including high Xorg load)

    Hello everybody,
    this is my first message. I'm an Arch user since a few months, and I'm pretty sure this is the distribution I'll stick to - I pratically love everything about it, especially its simpleness. It's the first Linux that doesn't scare me away with tons of configuration files scattered around dozens of different locations. I've already gotten quite a number of things fixed by myself without even looking at the forum or wiki.
    Well, it seems most of these statements can be found in most first forum posts, so I'll stop to bore you...
    The problem: Playing flash videos or animations causes incredible processor load: Even youtube takes a whole CPU core (or even a little more), top shows around 80% for Xorg and around 20-30% for Firefox (a little less with Opera). I'm on Arch64 with XFCE, Athlon X2 4600+, NVidia 8200 chipset (which has severe driver problems anyway; I'm using the latest NVidia beta driver). I'd try the open source nvidia driver, but (it seems that) there's no support for my chipset yet.
    Currently I'm using Adobe's Flash64 alpha, before that I used various versions fo the nspluginwrapper. 32-bit Flash also caused high CPU load, but it wasn't that much and it may have been related to nspluginwrapper rather than anything else; however I have got the impression that things became even worse with the switch to the x64 alpha (performance-wise; on the other hand, it at least loads faster and doesn't crash anymore). Like said before, youtube takes one core, but it mostly works ok then, but videos with higher resolutions that youtube's are practically impossible to watch (except when there is very little movement in the film). Neither Flash hardware acceleration on nor off makes any difference.
    I've already read half of the web, searched in forums, wikis, etc., but didn't find anybody with the same problem. When Flash64 was released and people were reporting good improvements, I was hoping it would be the same for me...
    What I'm looking for is suggestions of things to try... I'm out of ideas what to try and where to look. It just seems strange that I seem to have problems that others don't...
    Thanks for reading and for any comments.

    Hehe, I'm also wondering how many Cerbies are out there...
    Really funny. The internet is a small place, obviously. Us meeting in a Linux forum also explains why nobody writes to the LSML anymore.

  • Logical Reads are very high when run as sproc and very less logical reads when run as a script

    Hello
    Have a question,
    when i execute a sproc. i get a very high logical reads count and when i run the same sproc converted into script it has very low logical reads what does it mean..

    I would like you to check query plan during ad-hoc run versus stored procedure execution. As other pointed out it could be due to parameter sniffing.

  • Loader, Unload SWF and Warning: Ignoring 'secure' attribute........

    Hey all
    I was just simply trying to load one swf into another.  in my document class I have the following line of code in my constructor.
    var loadBoard:LoadBoard = new LoadBoard("Directory.swf");
    in my LoadBoard class:
    package com.myproject
         import flash.display.Loader;
         import flash.display.MovieClip;
         import flash.net.URLRequest;
         public class LoadBoard extends MovieClip
              public function LoadBoard(nameOfBoard:String)
                   var boardLoader:Loader = new Loader();
                   addChild(boardLoader);
                   boardLoader.load(new URLRequest(nameOfBoard));
                   trace("swf should be loaded");
    In my console I get the following when I debug"
    [SWF] U:\fullPath\Directory.swf - 69,058 bytes after decompression
    [SWF] U:\fullPath\Directory.swf - 2,067 bytes after decompression
    [SWF] U:\fullPath\Directory.swf - 322,606 bytes after decompression

    Not sure why I am getting this warning, when I googled it, the erro has to do with trying to load a file from another domain. My Directory.swf file is in the same location as my main swf, the bin-debug folder.  Also the Directory.swf does not seem to load into my main swf as I don't see it show up in the flash player when i run my app.   I am also a little confused on the [Unload SWF], I am not doing anything to tell it to Unload my swf.
    I am using FB to do all my coding and debugging if that matters.
    Does anyone have any ideas.
    thanks,

    Apparently I was, so I changed it to classic text in my Directory.fla and that seemed to remove the weird error.  However it seem that my swf is still not loading.  any Ideas why that might be?
    [EDIT]  Ok, my Directory swf is defenatly loading. but not showing up in the display list. I updated my LoadBoard to the following.
    package com.aces
         import flash.display.Loader;
         import flash.display.MovieClip;
         import flash.events.Event;
         import flash.net.URLRequest;
         public class LoadBoard extends MovieClip
              public function LoadBoard(nameOfBoard:String)
                   var boardLoader:Loader = new Loader();
                   boardLoader.load(new URLRequest(nameOfBoard));
                   boardLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, finishLoading);
              public function finishLoading(loadEvent:Event):void
                   addChild(loadEvent.currentTarget.content);
                   trace("swf should be loaded");
    any Ideas?

  • [SOLVED] External USB mouse causes very high CPU load

    Hello,
    this is far from a scientific test, but if I launch a cpu load monitor and wiggle the mouse cursor over it with the built-in touchpad, the CPU load goes up by 3-4%. When I do the same with a USB mouse, it's 30-40%. Also, in a 3D game, moving the camera around with the touchpad drops the FPS from 35 to 25, while doing the same with the USB mouse drops it to about 5-10 FPS, so something is definetely wrong here.
    If I don't touch the mouse, it doesn't produce any load.
    The CPU load comes from both X and the window over which I am wiggling the cursor, whether it is a terminal, browser or whatever, with the window contributing about 2/3 of it. If I don't do it over a window, the excessive load comes only from X and is much smaller (but still several times bigger than the load the touchpad produces).
    I have no idea how to even tackle the issue.
    I run Arch 64, on an Asus 1201N laptop. The mouse is Logitech G5 (laser mouse).

    Have you tried with a different mouse, to check if it is specific to this mouse /driver? Does lowering the polling rate help? (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mouse_Polling_Rate) .I remember vaguely that laptop mode caused this too.. search the forums for mouse and cpu.

  • Firfox 8 is sometimes very slow to load random websites and others it loads quickly, IE8 loads all websites ok. Have cleared cookies and cache and allowed ff as exception in Windows firewall.

    I use FF 8.0 (x86en-US) as default browser, since update to 8.0 FF intermittently takes ages to load some websites, sometimes not loading the site at all. To rectify this I go back one page to the Google results or hyperlink and ask FF to load the webpage again. This usually solves the problem but not always. I have cleared cookies and cache and added FF to exceptions in windows firewall. The websites affected are not always the same and some that load quickly one day can take ages next time. IE8 loads all websites OK. Antivirus and malware scans all clear.

  • Very high memory consumption of B1i and cockpit widgets

    Hi all,
    finally I have managed it to install B1i successfully, but I think something is wrong though.
    Memory consumption in my test environment (Win2003, 1024 MB RAM), while no other applications and no SAP addons are started:
    tomcat5.exe 305 MB
    SAP B1 client 315 MB
    SAP B1DIProxy.exe 115 MB
    sqlservr.exe 40 MB
    SAPB1iEventSender.exe 15 MB
    others less than 6 MB and almost only system based processes...
    For each widget I open (3 default widgets, one on each standard cockpit), the tomcat grows bigger and leaves less for the sql server, which has to fetch all the data (several seconds on 100% of CPU usage).
    Is this heavy memory consumption normal? What happens if several users are logged into SAP B1 using widgets?
    Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Sebastian

    Hi Gordon,
    so this is normal? Then I guess the dashboards are not suitable for many customers, especially for them who are working on a terminal server infrastructure. Even if the tomcat server has this memory consumption only on the SAP server, when each client needs about 300 MB (and add some hundred for the several addons they need!), I could not activate the widgets. And generally SAP B1 is not the only application running at the customers site. Suggesting to buy more memory for some Xcelsius dashboards won't convince the customer.
    I hope that this feature will be improved in the future, otherwise the cockpit is just an extension of the old user menu (except for the brilliant quickfinder on top of the screen).

  • Problem... High CPU load with HDD. Please Help

    Hello all,
    Im stuck. Ive got a MSI KA790GX which has poor HDD access/transfer, low burst rate and very high CPU load.
    As far as i know the Western Digital 640gb WD6401AALS Black should be a fast hard drive. Which according to reviews/HD Tune,
    should be:-
    Minimum 60mb/sec
    Maximum 120mb/sec
    Average 95mb/sec
    Access 12ms
    Burst 110mb/sec
    CPU 5%
    No matter what I try, i always get poor results...
    My MSI KA790GX
    Minimum 41mb/sec ~ 54mb/sec
    Maximum 104mb/sec ~ 108mb/sec
    Average 86mb/sec ~89mb/sec
    Access 12ms
    Burst 60mb/sec ~ 80mb/sec
    CPU 26% ~ 44%!!!!!!!!
    I could accept not getting the same high speed results as the review/reference, even if the burst rate sucked.
    But one of the cores goes to 50%-60% load during hdd activity. Thats just crazy!!
    I have tried...
    IDE mode, AHCI, RAID Ready, RAID Single Disk
    SATA Port 1, 2, 3, 4 + 5
    Different SATA cables
    Flashed bios, cleared bios, optimised defaults, failsafe defaults
    Windows XP 32bit, Vista 32bit, Vista 64bit. fresh installs
    MSI CD Drivers, MSI Web Drivers, AMD/ATI Web Drivers
        ... and combinations of.
    I have also tested the WD640gb Black on another older PC, with Nvidia (55?) chipset and slower (1.9ghz x2) cpu.
    Transfer rates were slightly better than my KA790GX but, Burst Rate = 115mb/sec and CPU usage = 13%.
    I also tried a Seagate 1.5tb (ST31500341AS) on both PCs,
    Nvidia chipset
    Minimum 65mb/sec
    Maximum 134mb/sec
    Average 107mb/sec
    Access 14ms
    Burst 83mb/sec
    CPU 7%
    On my MSI KA790GX
    Minimum 55mb/sec
    Maximum 120mb/sec
    Average 100mb/sec
    Access 14ms
    Burst 87mb/sec
    CPU 33%!!!!
    Could someone please please help, ive spent hours and hours on this. Its doin my head in.
    I just hope its something stupid ive missed, cos i still not used my HD4850 from christmas :-(
    Thanks.

    I used HDTune because I could reference to other results. Whats a better program to use?
    Windows Experience Index, HDD Score = 5.9.
    But I have no reference and cant be sure of cpu load.

    Bios defaults to C&C and C1E off so i have tried them. Also windows power settings, balanced/high performance.
    UPDATE
    Reinstalled Vista64 but loaded the AHCI driver from the disk config screen. This seems to have stopped the high cpu usage during disk activity.
    HDTune with Windows Power settings @ High Performance,
    Min = 52mb/sec
    Max = 106mb/sec
    Ave = 88mb/sec
    Access = 12ms
    Burst = 77mb/sec
    CPU = 3.4%
    HDTune with Windows Power settings @ Balanced
    Min = 54mb/sec
    Max = 104mb/sec
    Ave = 87mb/sec
    Access = 12ms
    Burst = 65mb/sec
    CPU = 12%
    So now transfer speed is about 10% slower than reference. But burst speed is terrible.
    I also used IBM Feature Tool to change the HDD AAM to 'performance mode' 254 as suggested elsewhere.
    Long shot as the hdd performs ok with other hardware. same results.
    Also MSI support asked me to try a newer bios, version 1.51. same results.
    Anyone know what the AMD 7-Series Chipsets Disk Performance Utility does, and should i run it in Vista64?
    Thanks for all the replies, hope i can sort this, not played any PC games since Quake 3 on my ti4600...

  • High CPU load and com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2 crash after upgrade

    After upgrading my Macbook Air from Lion to Mountain Lion, the system has a very high cpu load, and the crash reporter is the process that causes thee high load. In the error log I see this entry several times per second:
    17.08.12 12:58:46,011 ReportCrash[5998]: com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.crashreporter.writereport.crash
    com.apple.message.signature: Image Capture Extension
    com.apple.message.signature2: com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2 ||| 8.0 (8.0)
    com.apple.message.signature3: 03A96CBDA3C85A114383537BFC5C8999
    com.apple.message.result: NO
    com.apple.message.summarize: YES
    I investigated a bit more and recovered, that it has something to do with the printer drivers. When I remove all printers from setting, everything is fine. As soon as I add a printer (Brother MFC 9440CN printer/scanner, printer driver provided by Mountan Lion), the crash reporter starts it's work and the error log is full of those entries.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marcus

    I did more exploration and found the cause of this, but I don't know how to fix it:
    I removed all Brother and Lexmark printer drivers and rebooted (and also tested with a virtual machine using 10.8.0 as guest os that never had any printer installed). As soon as I enter the printer settings and press the "+", the crashes begin, so it looked like the bonjour one of the printers announcing themselves via Bonjour were causing this.
    When watching a picture in the preview app the same happend. We have two multi function printers in our network, the already mentioned brother printer and a Lexmark X204N. Switching off the Lexmark (which wasn't installed on my Mac) solved the problem. Switching off the printer is no solution in our office (it's our fax device and main printer), but switching off mDNS on the Lexmark also solved it. But this can only be a workaround.
    Is this a known problem with Lexmark devices and Mountain Lion (it works fine with machines using Lion)? Are there any fixes known? It's just the Lexmark device announing itself via Bonjour that causes trouble, even if the driver is not installed.
