Very high latency over WiFi

My Arch install has been working fine for several months, but last week my network performance suddenly became extremely poor over wireless (this is a desktop with PCI wireless card installed). Wired connections still work fine. Other computers on our wireless network have not had any problems.
The problem is extremely high latency. If I ping google.com, I get numerous responses with times over 1000 ms, and often duplicates. Functionally, it causes websites to load slowly, and I often have to reload a site multiple times before it will fully load. If I'm signed into Google Chat, it will frquently report that I am disconnected, and then re-connect a few minutes later.
The primary indication of the problem is that I receive the following in errors.log:

This message seems to be loosely correlated with connectivity problems, but not always. I also occasionally receive the following; it usually seems to be after the computer has gone into hibernation:

    Obviously, my Mac has very high latency where my PC works as expected.
    I tried resetting the PRAM, but i didn't affect my results.
    I tried updating Airport with the latest AirPort Client Update (http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortClient_Update_for_MacBook_and_MacBookPro), but my hardware wasn't eligible for that update (Mid 2007 MacBookPro).
    I believe this isn't a hardware bug because i get acceptable ping results when next to my router or in other rooms of my flat.
    Can you help me with that bug ?

    Ok, I must have jinxed myself.
    High latency with my Negear WPN824v3. As previously mentioned, the other wireless computers connect fine. Latency remains regardless of the power connected or not.

  • Very high Latency and inconsistent download speeds

    Hi all,
    This is my first time on these forums and hopefully i can find some help for my horrible problem.
    For the last 2-3 weeks my latency has consistently been 200+, i like to play online games alot and i cant with this latency. I have gone threw the whole drill of ringing BT and following there advice and i even had a BT engineer come out and he couldnt' find any problems. BT said they checked my line and couldn't find anything wrong, and the engineer didn't find any problems with the router (black).
     I also have changed all of the wiring from the socket in the wall, which leads to the router, which leaders to a modem (i think its called that) that then connects me to the internet (Cable).
    I am running out of patience as i spend alot of time on games such as Call of Duty and seeing my mates play it as i have 300+ ping is really annoying.
    I Have noticed that the other computer my parents use also have the same high latency issue and they have tried it on cable and wireless with the same bad results. I have a program called xfire which shows my ping for all the servers on my list and there all 200+ but sometimes when i test my speeds on speedtest.net it shows me with 50 ping i believe this is due to the large spikes that i get, when im on call of duty it constantly jumps around 100, 150, 200 and sometimes even 50.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Very high latency in fetching static files

    Problem : Really high latency in fetching static files upon first request.
    Environment : Weblogic V8.1 App Server and Web Server running using jdk1.4.2_13
    Mem Setting: -Xmx2048M -XX:MaxPermSize=1024M
    Situaton: Restart the weblogic server, fetch a static file using " wget hostname:port/script.js". Comes back in around 100 ms for us. Then from browser we request "http://hostname:portname/Logon.do". Then again we do " wget hostname:port/script.js" and now it comes back in 400 ms. The above times are in our TEST environment. In PROD it is really worse 1300ms for one file !!!
    Tests:
    Wrote a servlet to handle all static file (CSS,js,gif,jpeg etc) and all requests would go through this servlet. Did not solve the problem, latency is still high.
    Wrote a test servlet to load about 1000 classes explicitly (Class.forName) and then fetched the static file with out accessing Logon.do from browser. Latency was high after loading classes. This lead to conclusion that it is number of classes we are loading which is causing the problem.
    Ran application under JProfiler, Took a heap dump right after starting server. About 1300 classes loaded. Took a heap dump after fetching Logon.do. About 2100 classes loaded.
    Question :
    1) Isn't 1300 too high for just the server to start? (there are some classes loaded because of our references in ejb's)
    2) We use prototype factory to instantiate classes. All the interface and implementation definitions are specified in config file and it seems to load all the classes. May be we can change this. But what confuses me is that the response time was okay when we had 1300 classes loaded how come it became so bad when there were 2100 classes ?
    If any body is using these same set of technologies, what is the average number of classes loaded on initial start up?
    I am running out of options to test?

    There's no way from what you posted that you could draw a conclusion that you are infected.
    I totally missed that tracert, but from a ping response time, it looks healthy.
    The packet loss, could easily cause your problem.
    Does it consistently loose packets there ? Cause I've pinged it from here and got no loss.
    Also remember that in this case, ping is also the time it takes the blizzard servers to response to your network message, so it could be local to blizzard, and ping might not detect that.
    Have you tried a netstat -p tcp -b command too see whats active on your PC ? That could point you towards something local.

  • Updating to 10.6.7 Destroy's WiFi...(Very High Latency)

    Updating to 10.6.7 seems to have made my wireless connections useless. everything was fine at 10.6.6... After upgrading to 10.6.7 I noticed terrible latency and lag while playing an online game. I looked at the server list for the game and did a refresh, all the servers normally listing 30-90ms were now in the hundreds. 500ms...800ms...etc... I thought it was nothing.. tried basic troubleshooting steps and determined that it wasn't just the online game. I started looking at the connection.
    Ping reply's online were returning very bad response times.. so I said OK, I'll ping the gateway here and see.. cause that I know I should be getting <1ms or slightly higher... it was also extremely high.. 345...800...750 etc....
    After some more basic troubleshooting I determined that it had to be the recently installed OS update... finding no solution to the issue online I decided to do a backup and reinstall OS X.
    I did a fresh install of OS X the network was back to normal... I downloaded 10.6.7 combo update and installed it... wireless was destroyed again...it has to be the update....
    I did yet another fresh install of OS X.. this time I installed the 10.6.6 combo update and all the other software updates except for 10.6.7... the wireless is perfectly fine!
    I am left with the only conclusion that the 10.6.7 update destroy's wifi from a latency standpoint.. making it useless to me for the most part.. even for basic surfing... I had no issues with connecting to the wireless.. just that it was basically useless after 10.6.7. I am on an iMac 24" Intel Core2 Duo model.
    Anyone else having this issue or know a solution? For now I will just be leaving 10.6.7 alone.

    10.6.7 does nothing to my WiFi latency. My suggestion is to check if your router's firmware is up to date, and known to be 10.6.7 compatible. Just because it is 10.6 to 10.6.6 compatible does not mean it is 10.6.7 compatible. I have Apple's airport extreme base station with 802.11n. Check also if you are proxies, or have certain firewall ports enabled on the System Preferences -> Security & Sharing that might interfere with the router's own firewall ports. If you have stated DNS numbers in Apple menu -> System preferences -> Network, make sure they are also stated on the router's own setup page, or remove DNS numbers from both, as those can contribute to latency under certain conditions. I have an iMac 5,1 and my WiFi is doing great, even when running a VPN over VirtualBox with Windows XP. Double check the games in question have been tested with 10.6.7. They may have their own configuration issues. If the game uses Flash, make sure the version of Adobe Flash you are using has been tested with 10.6.7 by contacting Adobe.

  • Very slow printing over WiFi

    Hi everyone!
    One of my clients has uses a 4th generation Apple AirPort Extreme. It's a small network with only 3 to 5 users.
    All users connect via Ethernet cable, but one individual recently moved her iMac 21 to a spot in the office that doesn't have a wired network connection. Although she's able to work fine via a wireless connection in almost every respect, printing to their Canon ir C3080 copier is painfully slow over wireless. It doesn't matter what she tries to print - even a small text file takes up to five minutes to print. When I move and connect her iMac to the network via Ethernet, the printing problem disappears.
    I then tested the other computers in the office and my computer for this problem and found that they all printed very slowly over the WiFi connection.
    Their AirPort base station is up-to-date with the most current firmware, and all the computers are running the most updated versions of Snow Leopard. I'm running Lion on my computer, by the way.
    Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this problem? I don't have another printer I can test in this office, but I think that may be the next thing I have to do.
    Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Email sending over 3g very fast sending over wifi deadly slow

    hi all.
    forum = last resort for me.
    brand new 3gs on vodafone aus 3g network. sending email is very fats. when it switches to wireless at work or at home sending email can take up to 10 minutes.
    any idea whats up with that? anyone else have the same problem? any help is much appreciated. thanks

    Most ISPs offer a very fast download rate (what you see when viewing a site) but a very slow upload rate. It's entirely possible that your upload rate through your WiFi connection is slower than the upload rate available via your cellular network.

  • Random Very High Latency 3 Seconds

    My Broadband was faultless for years but was faulty a while ago around April this year and this was repaired (it was tree damage to an overhead line and took about a full month for Openreach to fix)). But it has never really been great since this fix (I was never able to put my finger on what was wrong) and took a while for me to trace, there appear to be long delays for requests when browsing the t'interweb.  I found the delays using both ping and traceroute results. It seems the first hop from my router to 217.32.142.194 which is part of BT infrastructure I think, this can have delays of over 3 seconds, but this can vary from tens of mS (normal operation) to thousands of mS (not working at all). It occurs at random , different times of day or night and you can tell when it's happening while browsing, your request just takes ages to appear. I have tried ethernet connected computers to my router so it isn't a wireless induced delay. I have tried different DNS servers from BT's own, OpenDNS and Google Public DNS with no change to the random delays. I have also used tcpdump and port 53 filter to see if it was DNS request delays but this doesn't seem to be the problem. Is there something wrong with BT's core network?
    I am going to write a shell script to test these delays every half hour to see if a pattern emerges.

  • High latency ping to local router on wifi

    I'm running 10.10.3 on a MacBook Air mid 2012 and have started to experience very high latency when using WiFi. I've gone through some of the internets and deleted a few files out of /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ but that didn't do anything. A few other searches yield similar stories but nothing suggested fixed it. For the life of me I can't figure this one out.
    Doesn't matter what WiFi network I am using
    Hardwired works great
    Here's a sample of what I am seeing. Packet loss being 0% is only on the LAN.. as soon as I ping something on the WAN I'm getting a few percentage dropped packets.

    There are multiple possible reasons.  Hosts aren't required to treat pings with utmost priority, so some of the variability could be just how busy the host is or there could also be congestion along the path, to name two possible issues.
    Again, "basic" ping is really more to determine a host is "alive", not for highly accurate latency measurements.  However, if you enable IP timestamp, you might get more accurate RTT latency (you may need to calculate the deltas, yourself).

    Is that problem consistent?  My ping/tracert is fine: also from Infinity connection.  I can't check the VPN itself.

    You seem to have very high pings even to the HomeHub.  Normally that should show up as 1ms or less even with wireless.

  • Why does my 10GB iSCSI setup seem see such high latency and how can I fix it?

    I have tried both Starwind and the built in Server 2012 iscsi software but see similar results.  I am currently running the latest version of starwinds free

    I have connected it to a HP 8212 10Gb port which is also connected via 10Gb to our vmware servers.  I have a dedicated vlan just for iscsi and have enabled
    jumbo frames on the vlan.
    I frequently see very high latency on my iscsi storage.  So much so that it can timeout or hang vmware.  I am not sure why.  I can run IOmeter and
    get some pretty decent results.
    I am trying to determine why I see such high latency 100'ms.  It doesn't seem to always happen, but several times throughout the day, vmware is complaining
    about the latency of the datastore.  I have a 10Gb iscsi connection between the servers.  I wouldn't expect the disks to be able to max that out.  The highest I could see when running IO meter was around 5Gb.  I also don't see much load
    at all on the iscsi server when I see the high latency.  It seems network related, but I am not sure what settings I could check.  The 10Gb connect should be plenty as I said and it is no where near maxing that out.
    Any thoughts about any configuration changes I could make to my vmware enviroment, network card settings or any ideas on where I can troubleshoot this.  I

    If both StarWind and MSFT target show the same numbers I can guess it's network configuration issue. Anything higher then 30 ms is a nightmare :( Did you properly tune your network stacks? What numbers (x-put and latency) you get for raw TCP numbers (NTtcp
    and Iperf are handy to show)?

    Since we've upgraded the 4402 (from 4-2-176-0) to 7.0.235.3 many client facing very high latency.
    We're having 12 x 1142 APs and they are connected in local mode to WLC.
    Before the upgrade performance was good. Now, when I ping from LAN to WLAN clients it takes from 0.1ms - 20s.

  • High Latency Issue

    Hi,
    So for the past 2 or so days I have had issues with very high latency. I have been getting a pretty much constant 300ms spiking commonly to about 400-500ms. Normally I am experiencing 31-60ms so this is a huge spike out of nowhere, I am pretty positive it is nothing inside of the house as we have not connected any new devices or moved the BT Hub 4 at all.
    I have seen some users talking about something called Fast Path, although I do not know what this is if it helps resolve my latency issue then would it be possible to put me onto this.

  • Lumia 920 Facebook connection very slow over WiFi ...

    Since the Portico update the connection to Facebook both in the People and Me hub as well as in the Facebook app is very slow over WiFi, whilst still good over 4G/LTE (with WiFi off). The connection to the Nokia account also appears to have a similar problem. All other accounts and apps have good speed over both cellular and WiFi connections.
    Any ideas anybody?
    PS: FYI, a bit more info about the history and context: When I noticed the problem the first time after the update, I tried to solve it by deleting and re-adding my Facebook account on the phone. Unfortunately, that made me lose my Me hub tile, so I decided to do a full reset. That again unfortunately got stuck on the togg wheels, so I restored the phone using Nokia Care Suite with the latest firmware, and restored my accounts, apps and settings from scratch. Everythings seems to work fine now, except the above mentioned Facebook and Nokia account connectivity problem.

    Did you somehow solve this problem?
    I have the same issue here with my Lumia 920.
    However I have already found out that it only applies to my home Wifi. All other Wifi networks i was connecting to did work flawlesly.
    I need to note that all other devices on my home network are using facebook without a glitch. Only Lumia has some problems with it.
