Very high network traffic to printer

I am seeing very high network traffic between my Mac (iMac, running Mavericks) and my printer, a Canon MP640, connected via Ethernet. This is when the printer is idle. According to Little Snitch, the traffic is on the order of about 50 kB/s! The network traffic comes from mDNSresponder, and is directed to canonmp640.local; it is using UDP port 5353, which seems to be the mDNS port (again, according to Little Snitch). The traffic of course goes away if the printer is off, but it needs to remain on because it is being used as a printer for other computers/devices around the house.
Is this amount of network traffic for an idle printer normal? Anyone has any idea how to stop it from doing that? I even captured some of that traffic using Little Snitch, but nothing that provided any insight to me...

mDNSresponder is the Bonjour agent. Perhaps your printer is connecting as a Bonjour printer. See Disable Bonjour by turning off mDNSResponder - OS X Daily and OS X: How to disable Bonjour service advertising without .... I would also do a little Google search on "mdnsresponder." Also, you may want to contact Canon tech support.

  • Very high data traffic generated by Nokia Messagin...

    Is anyone else seeing really high data use on their phone log following last week's Messaging outage?
    Up until last week's outage, the data traffic generated by Messaging was about 5kb an hour (with no new emails sent or received). Presumably this small amount of data traffic results from the Nokia email server "pinging" the phone periodically to keep the connection open.
    But after last week's outage and issues with passwords being requested etc etc, I saw that the data traffic generated by the Messaging app has gone through the roof - about 400 - 500kb an hour!  Again, this is with no new emails sent or received - so theoretically is just the server pinging the phone to keep the idle connection open!
    I reinstalled Nokia Messaging on my phone (E61i) - no difference - the data generated by the Messaging app is still 400 - 500 kb an hour (it stops when I take Messaging offline).  
    I have friends roaming in Ireland and their phone has had the same problem - the data traffic generated by their Messaging app is sky high and they have had to shut it down because of the high cost of data whilst roaming.
    I also newly installed Messaging on another phone (N95) that I have, using a brand new email account and a new T-mobile SIM card, and guess what - that phone also has sky high data traffic due to Messaging.
    What is going on??  Can someone at Nokia Messaging please sort this out?  Anyone roaming with Nokia Messaging enabled is facing hugh data charges from their network.

    The data traffic occurs in phones which are on a home network (mine in the UK) and on a roaming network (my friends traveling in Ireland).  Interestingly, I've now checked with another friend who is roaming in Italy and they also use Messaging but haven't seen any high packet data issues with their phone.
    The data traffic shows up in the Packet Log, as well as on the actual T-Mobile network account (plus the charges for the data!)  Accessing a T-Mobile UK account online shows all packet data use - in this case, 120-150 kb every 15 minutes, whereas before last week it was 1-2kb every 15 minutes.  
    When I "Go Offline" with Nokia Messaging, the high data traffic stops, both on the Packet Log and network account, so I am 100% certain this is due to Messaging.

    That's a difficult one but I'd always go for HP as they make so many excellent models that you'll always be able to buy the cartridges from almost anyone.  Theyre darn good printer too.  I have four in the office here and one of them is a very neat flatbed with exceptionally high tonal qualities.  One of their cheaper models is the HP 5520 A4 inkjet all-in-one - CMYK.  Good value at £70 and 4800 x 1200 DPI. 

  • Share network traffic between 2 parallel wireless bridges - What kit?

    Dear All,
    I'm a technology professional, but mainly in electronic design rather than high end networking. Hence my request for your advice.
    I wish to specify some items of kit that I can ask a networking professional to fit and configure to solve my particular application.
    I would like to use (and already have in place) two parallel wireless bridges between 2 buildings. One is on 2.4GHz and the other is on 5GHz. In my simple testing so far (of each link in turn), they both work brilliantly. So far, these are in place just for test purposes, but soon I will be required to make the system "live".
    The reason I'm doing this is to split network traffic over both links (to possibly get enhanced bandwidth) but to mainly build in redundancy should one link fail.
    What kit is required to do this (apart from the 4 access points configured as bridges)?
    I imagine I may need a load balancing device(s) or possibly something more suitable for this task.
    I'd like the solution to be very transparent to the rest of the system, I'd like it to "look" like it's a simple wireless bridge (but really it's a highly robust dual bridge). I hope my waffle makes sense.
    Any thoughts?

    You can certainly copy the addresses from one machine to the other - the contact files are held in user/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. Copy all files into the same respective location on the other machine (they will overwrite any existing contacts).
    If you want the address books kept in sync, take a look at SyncTogether or SeeCard Rendezvous.

  • Acrobat 9 very slow when trying to print

    Need to know if anybody has a solution to my printing problem. We just bought and installed Acrobat 9. When trying to print a file in the program, it takes a very long time for the file to be spooled to the printer. Of course a multi page document is even worse. We are printing to a printer that is networked, it's a Canon high speed printer with a PCL driver. We have tried a PostScript driver as well. I have tried changing the resolution to 300dpi and not print as an image. We can transfer the file to a PC with just a reader, and it spools much faster to the same printer.
    Are we missing a setting somewhere? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    You have a file.pdf open in Acrobat 9.0
    You go to File > Print and choose your networked Canon Printer.
    That's the one that spools slow???
    Then you say... you take the very same file.pdf and open it in Reader (to a different PC) go to File > Print to the very same networked Canon printer and it spools fast?
    How about gettiing the free Adobe Reader on the PC that spools slow, open your file.pdf in Reader and print that to the networked printer to compare spooling speeds? That would be a true comparison to see if it's just Acrobat or the PC.

  • Airport Express Very High Trasmit

    Hi,
    I noticed in the last 2 months or so that my Airport Express has started sending out extremely large amounts of... Something. I have no idea what.
    I noticed some time ago that the green light on the front would start blinking like mad and stay that way for long periods of time (I have it set to blink on activity). I also poll my AX via SNMP using an open source tool called MRTG. MRTG reports in saying that the AX is transmitting at about 12Mbps out both the wired and the wireless interfaces at the same time. This isn't a case of traffic passing though my AX, it's originating from it.
    There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when this happens. Today it stared just after 10am and and continues now. Some days it doesn't happen at all.
    I've tried running a sniffer trace on my wired LAN but it doesn't pick anything up coming from the AX. MRTG also agrees with this since I don't see this high volumes of traffic reaching anything else on my wired network.
    I'm running the logging in debug on the AX and it's not showing anything of use.
    Does anyone have any idea what this little thing is doing?

    As you may already know, when the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is configured to "join a wireless network," it is performing as a wireless client ... just like any other wireless client (laptop, desktop, printer, etc.) on the network. It is most "chatty" when configured to share a USB printer attached to it or when streaming iTunes ... otherwise it's pretty much "quiet" with only enough communication between it and the network it has joined.
    Wireless clients, accessing the Internet, should have no need to communicate with the AX during those communications nor should the AX need to pass Internet data coming in from your D-Link router back to them ... again, that is because the AX is NOT performing as a router.
    Firewall settings on either the wireless clients or the D-Link would only have an impact during either streaming iTunes or printing to a shared printer.
    There are a number of utilities available that can monitor network traffic and could possible provide you with a clue to what is going on. One I use that actually monitors traffic to/from the computer itself is Net Monitor Sidekick. It provides a real-time display of all traffic and can be filtered for the type of traffic (direct, gateway, broadcast, etc.) you are interested in.

    mod_status is not listed in Web > Modules
    Not sure if it will help significantly but I did enable the query cache for MySQL.
    The query cache will generally help reduce load on the database server, but only if there's sufficient RAM on the server to cache the queries and results. The real question is how mush RAM is your system using? If it's out of memory then enabling the query cache can be detrimental.
    For that matter, do your sites seem slow? Is your only concern the relatively high CPU load? or are pages loading slowly, too?
    The pages are taking exceptionally long to load.
    The 1.7 Gb Ram...Yes, it's a config of 512-512-512-256.
    Swapping that 256MB for a 512MB seems like a no-brainer, no matter what else you do. It'll cost you $20 from OWC.

    Was wondering if a permissions issue could create the problems I'm having with Apache?
    Unlikely. If apache didn't have permission to serve a file it would throw an error page back pretty quickly. I can't see this is the cause, but a quick look at apache's error log will tell you if there are any permission issues.
    The site was running well this morning but as bloggers logged into Wordpress and general traffic picked up, the CPU load ramped up to 100% and pages are now loading very slowly.

  • Very slow network throughput since 2-3 days ago

    I've been having very slow network throughput since 2-3 days ago, with no apparent reason.
    I see (from what I can tell) no relevant package updates during that period.
    Connections are nfs v3 shares, over UTP cat5e gigabit ethernet.
    I've been running this setup for many years now, without such issues.
    But now, it's as if throughput is capped around 100Mbps.
    Is there a way to see - if for some reason - a network adapter has locked to 100Mbps, instead of 1Gbps?
    ifconfig does not say anything.
    PS: netstat -i does not report any errors over the connection.

    experiencing the same issue with my wlan0 since update to kernel2.6.38 yesterday night.
    Speed tests grant me a download speed of around 50kbps. Should be around some mbit though! How do I find out, why it's acting so slow?
    edit: switched to win7 for the moment. Everything is speedy and normal around here. Something is seriously broken in my arch box!
    Can this be related to xorg-server1.10.902 or kernel2.6.38? It would also explain the strange issues with pacman lately (like this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=116429 or this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=116696).

    edit#2: Just got back from win7. Upload speed in Arch is quite okay. Download speed is extremely fucked though. I wonder why? At least now I know why pacman has problems getting package upgrades, etc.
    How do I fix a problem with the wlan0 connection? Haven't had any of those before with gnome and Networkmanager. I'm using the ath9k module.

  • [Solved] Top for network traffic + program

    Aloha,
    is there any tool that is able to show how much bandwith a program is using?
    Like Pidgin is using 5%, weechat 2% and Transmission 93% or similar. Sometimes my network monitor displays very high traffic and I don't know which program is causing it, so this kind of tool would be really helpful.
    I already tried nettop, but it only shows the protocols which are using the most traffic.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD 1.25GHz DP often completely locks up in the first few minutes after booting, sometimes with the spinning beach ball, normally with a very high pitched whining noise.

    Over the last few months my Mac has developed a worrying habit.
    Within the first few minutes of starting it up (perhaps on average about 50% of the time) it will completely lock up. This may happen at the Log In screen (if I start up the Mac & then leave it for a while) or during normal use.
    Often the first symptom is a very high pitched (but quiet) whining noise that seems to come from the loud speaker on the front of the Mac. The pointer may freeze at this point, or it may still be moveable for 5 or 10 seconds before it freezes. It sometimes turns into the spinning beach ball during this. Once locked up the only way I can restart the Mac is to hold down the power button on the front for a few seconds to completely reboot the machine.
    Once the Mac has restarted, it usually behaves normally, almost always for the rest of the day. The initial lock up & resulting restart only normally seem to happen the first time I use the Mac that day.
    The only peripherals attached to the Mac (apart from the display, keyboard & mouse) are an ADSL modem, a USB printer and a pair of Apple Pro speakers, and this setup hasn't changed since long before the problems started, so I'm confident that I can discount the peripherals causing problems. I doubt that unplugging the speakers, for example, would have any effect.
    I've run Disc Utility, OnyX and DiscWarrior without anything major cropping up. My instincts (I've been troubleshooting Mac problems for 16 years) tell me that I have a fundamental hardware problem, possibly with one of the 4 RAM DIMMs installed.
    The RAM configuration is shown in the attached screen grab.
    I'm considering removing one DIMM, running with 1.5GB of RAM rather than 2GB for a while, and repeating with a different DIMM removed each time until I can hopefully isolate the dodgy DIMM.
    Do people feel this is a sensible approach, or should I try something else first?

    Sometimes visual inpection will show bulging tops/sides., my guess is if it is it's most likely in the PSU.

  • HP LaserJet P2055dn that is on the network doesnt always print all pages in print job

    We have 4 of these printers on our network. It is very sporadic but when users print they do not always get all of the pages from the print job. Sometimes the additional pages will come 30 - 40 minutes after print job was processed sometimes they don't ever come. I have watched the print jobs go to the print server and then to the local print queue and it looks like everything prints although there are sometimes these lingering pages that do not come out (or come out at a later time). There are not other documents being printed at the time so that is not the issue. Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

    oh, my! That was so long ago. But, if i recall correctly, when i pulled off the top of the printer, there was a very small wire with a plastic connector on the end that had pulled appart when i removed the top. I probably had to use tweezers in order to reconnect it.  sorry for the foggy details, but that is what resides upstairs these days! good luck.

  • Server admin not showing network traffic graph

    This topic was posted a while ago with no solution, and it has been [archived|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6953359]. I have just experienced the same problem with Leopard Server Admin (SA). It seems to be a problem on the server, not in the client admin, since it occurs both when I use SA on the server itself and a client, and deleting client prefs. has not helped. I'm presuming that there is a corrupted database or prefs. file for this graph.
    All the other SA graphs show just fine. Fixing permissions has not helped, either.
    Anyone have any idea where to look on the server? Thanks.

    I'm pretty sure I have since I have a few Mac Mini's on the network with their home directory residing on the server and my Windows users are sharing a few daily use files on the server including a MYOB data file, also our intranet web site is hosting on the same server, not to mention I have 3 print queues there and all the outgoing mails from both of our all-in-one scan to email machines are using the same server. All of these services and users are using their computer as if nothing is wrong, so I have to assume that there is network traffic unless server admin interprets the term "network traffic" differently.

  • Unknown network traffic / router traffic monitoring

    So I got a new PC with windows 7 on it, and I installed this gadget that monitors network traffic, and it shows a lot of traffic that my local PC isn't showing, so I am thinking there is something running on the LAN that I can't see. I was looking to find a live, better program to monitor the actiontec router, for traffic. anyone know of anything that can maybe show me who is using all the bandwidth on my network?
    i have found software for Linksys, but nothing for the Actiontec.

    Keep in mind that when looking at Wireshark (sniffer) software there are different types of traffic:
    Unicast
    Broadcast
    Multicast
    Unicast is traffic between two devices.  You will see the traffic between the PC with wireshark and another device on your local network such as a printer, another PC or the Router.  You should not see traffic between another PC and the Internet for example.  Using a phone as an example some calls you and the conversation is between you and the person on the other end of the phone.  This is unicast traffic.  Using defaults of the actiontec, IP address seen will be 192.168.1.1 for the router and 192.168.1.2-99 for devices on your network.  If you have the TV service, 192.168.1.100-1xx is used for the cable boxes.
    Broadcast traffic is traffic sent to all devices.  Its not directed toward a particular PC but rather usually looking for information.  In a sniffer trace you will see broadcast traffic. Going back to the phone example, someone makes an announcement on an overhead intercom system that is broadcast traffic.  Broadcast traffic will be seen as 192.168.255.255
    Multicast traffic is traffic from one device for many devices.  Usually used in video feeds.   Using the phone system as an example someone wishes to tell a group of people something so instead of calling each person up and telling them each person who wants the information joins a conference bridge.  Anyone is allowed to listen but only those that wish to get the information receive it.  Generally how multicast works.  Multicast traffic will be seen as IP address 224.x.x.x or something of the sorts where the address will be 2xx.x.x.x.  
    I hope this makes sense.  Probably more information than you needed but at least it will help you understand what wireshark is telling you.

    Problem: New SG-200 26P Smart Switch with Latest Firmware - Very High Responce Time 500-800ms
    We've a EdgeMarc 4500 Router with 10 VPN tunnels to 10 brach locations. SG-200 26P Smart Switch is connected to 7 Servers (2 Terminal, SQL, and Other) All locations have 50MB Download and 20MB Upload speed from Verizon FiOS Internet service.
    As per the SolarWind tool, the response time of this switch is around at 500ms. At the same time, the EdgeMarc 4500 router response time is around 40ms and less.
    We've 60 desktops remotely connected to our SQL Server database and 40 RDP Users via Remote Desktop. The configuration is same from past 3 years. But we change the switch from HP 1800-24G to Cisco due to some Connection Failures. For Connection Failures, we first suspect the old HP switch, but it's look like issue with EdgeMarc Router.
    Is this Response Time is normal? I attached two screenshots of both Cisco Switch and EdgeMarc Router Response Time from past 24 hours according to SolarWind tool. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Thank you for participating in the Small Business support community. My name is Nico Muselle from Cisco Sofia SBSC.
    The response time from the switch could be considered as quite normal. Reason for this is that the switch gives CPU priority to it's actual duties which would of course be switching, access lists, VLANs, QoS, multicast and DHCP snooping etc etc. As a result of that, ping response times of the switch itself do not show in any way the correct working of the switch.
    I invite you to try pinging clients connected to the switch, you should be able to notice that response times to the clients are a lot lower than response times of the switch itself.

    I have the following situation:
    The SAP ECC servers are hosted outside my company and we are planning to install a SAP DMS server.
    We have 2 options: host the SAP DMS outside or install SAP DMS in our datacenter.
    When the SAP user attaches or reads a file to/from SAP DMS, how is the network traffic ?
    Is there any traffic fom SAP ECC to SAP DMS or the file goes to/from DMS from/to end-user ?
    How SAP DMS impacts my WAN ?

    Leonardo,  I have done some research /  trouble shooting and architectural changes to raise the upload / download speeds, there are several dependencies like Network, Application, hardware etc but to your question:
    First of all, DMS is a core functionality of ECC and utilizes both ECC for execution and Content Servers (recommended for Obvious performance reasons) for Data Storage. For your case I recommend that you host Content Server at the Data Center (assuming you have no other option) and have a Cache Server installed Onsite. (This requires minimal maintenance). When the user uploads a file the traffic is high as the entire File needs to be transferred to the data center, on the other hand Cache server (if installed onsite) considerably reduces the retrieval time.
    Again having said above there are several other parameters that could affect your upload / download speeds.
