Very long start up time

Hey all
Didnt really know where to post it but this forum seemed to be the one i guess.
When i start windows xp and it gets to the desktop, it takes about 50 seconds before i hear the startup music, then another min or so before the few backgroud programs start up and i can fully use all programs. I just got a k7n2 delta, and updated the windows, every thing works fine other wise.
here are my specs.
K7n2 delta (nvidia nforce 2 chipset)
amd athlon 2100+ XP
512 ddr (2100)
40 gig maxtor hdd (7200rpm)
creative dvd rom
ati radeon 9000 pro,
SB gamer X live 5.1
i think thats about it, also all drivers are updated... any clues???

Hi Casp,
Welcome to the forum!  :D
I wouldn't worry about the boot to music time too much as mine is about the same as yours - about 47 seconds (although XP's a lot faster than other earlier MS OS's it's not what you'd call fast.)
The fact that the machine takes a further minute to load the background programs does sound a little slow (mine takes about 30 seconds.) Of course, this all depends on how many background processes your OS loads.
When installing new software try to keep the number that start at XP load - to a minimum (most of the time, there's an option to prevent certain programs running at startup) - only let them start, if the machine really needs them in the background, programs such as Virus checkers, PC Alert etc.
I also agree with what christop suggested.

  • LabVIEW 8.5 Very Long Start-up Time

    Things had been running fine, but now when I start LabVIEW it takes
    approx four minutes for the program to load. I get past the first
    splash screen, but at the start screen I get the hour-glass icon for
    about four minutes. My CPU usage for LabVIEW goes to 50 (in Task
    Manager).
    When the problem first started occurring I was programming a DLL
    interface using the Shared Library Node, and I had crashed LabVIEW due
    to a programming error in the DLL.
    I'm wondering what the
    source is. I have the install discs for 8.5.1 and can do the upgrade,
    but I'd like to know the source so I can fix the problem next time.

    The crash could have probably caused internal error with the install. Was it a win32 exception or did LabVIEW return an error log file? I would recommend you to repair your LabVIEW install and then see if it still takes that long.

  • Long start-up time for Photo Editor in Adobe Elements 11

    I am wondering why it takes so long for the Photo Editor, at the welcome screen (the introduction), takes very long; in comparison to Organizer? In fact, when I check Task Manager it has not yet responded. It takes close to 1 minute for the Photo Editor of Elements version 11 to start. I have an Acer V3 laptop computer operating on Windows 8.1; 8 GB main memory (RAM), 750 GB hard disk drive, A8 AMD processor. Thank you for your consideration, and any helpful advice.
    Sincerely,

    Slow Startup
    If you are not on a network, and/or you are not using an Airport, make sure that only your internal modem network port is active, otherwise the OS will test the other ports (Ethernet, Airport, etc.) for activity on startup, particularly if any of the unused ports are set for DHCP.
    Go to the Network pane in System Preferences and click on the 'Show' pop-up menu. Choose the 'Network Port Configurations' option. Make sure that the Internal Modem port is the only one selected. (Of course, if you have your Macintosh on a network, or if you are using an Airport, you will have to turn on the appropriate port for these.)
    Another thing that can slow down startup times is having your Mac set to check a network time server if you don't have a broadband connection (DSL or cable modem) to the Internet. In System Preferences, go to the Date and Time pane, click on the Network Time Tab, and make sure you don't have Use Network Time Server checked. This causes a delay as your computer connects to the Internet and looks for a Network time server to sync with. (This will also keep your Mac from dialing up the Internet unexpectedly at odd times.)
    Another thing to check is in Applications /Utilities/Directory Access. Click on the Services tab, and in the resulting window, if you're not using (or going to be using) the various services listed, be sure to uncheck them. (That is, in the Enable column, deselect the checkboxes for NetInfo, LDAPv2, and/or LDAPv3.) Having them checked could lead to delays in start up.

  • Very long (10min+) logon time on clients

    Hi!
    Around 2 weeks ago our employees started to report that some macbooks/imac's (with maverick ob board) have very long logon time - 10min+ "spinning wheel" after home sync.
    Issue is related only to couple of client machines. Upgrade from Maverick To Yosemite fix the issue, but only for couple of days! Then issue re-occuring on the machines again. It's not related to the mobile profile, sync is very fast, "spinning wheel" appear after the sync and spiining for another 10+ minutes.
    Our infrastructure:
    - OS X Maverick (10.9.4) + Server 3.1.2
    - clients machines - 30+ machines, maverick and couple of yosemites.
    - Open Directory/File Sharing/Profile Manager on Server
    - Mobile Profiles on clients with enabled syncing during logon/logoff only.
    I noticed those errors during the "spinning wheel" (log gathere on server, not client):

    Please advise. We would like to not upgrade/migrate to Yosemite for now.

    Many Open Directory problems can be resolved by taking the following steps. Test after each one, and back up all data before making any changes.
    1. The OD master must have a static IP address on the local network, not a dynamic address.
    2. You must have a working DNS service, and the server's hostname must match its fully-qualified domain name. To confirm, select the server by name in the sidebar of the Server application window, then select the Overview tab. Click the Edit button on the Host Name line. On the Accessing your Server sheet, Domain Name should be selected. Change the Host Name, if necessary. The server must have at least a three-level name (e.g. "server.yourdomain.com"), and the name must not be in the ".local" top-level domain, which is reserved for Bonjour.
    3. The primary DNS server used by the server must be itself, unless you're using another server for internal DNS. The only DNS server set on the clients should be the internal one, which they should get from DHCP if applicable.
    4. Follow these instructions to rebuild the Kerberos configuration on the master.
    5. If you use authenticated binding, check the validity of the master's certificate. The common name must match the hostname and domain name. Deselecting and then reselecting the certificate in Server.app has been reported to have an effect in some cases. Otherwise delete all certificates and create new ones.
    6. Unbind and then rebind the clients in the Users & Groups preference pane. Use the fully-qualified domain name of the master.
    7. Reboot the master and the clients.
    8. Don't log in to the server with a network user's account.
    9. Disable any internal firewalls in use, including third-party "security" software.
    10. If you've created any replica servers, delete them.
    11. As a last resort, export all OD users. In the Open Directory pane of Server, delete the OD server. Then recreate it and import the users. Ensure that the UID's are in the 1001+ range.
    If you get this far without solving the problem, then you'll need to examine the logs in the Open Directory section of the log list in the Server app, and also the system log on the clients.

  • Firmware update and very long start-up

    Hi,
    I had a firmware update recently and I think that having MB21.00A5.B07 makes my MacBook start-up very long. It takes lot of time before I can see something more then a grey screen.
    Am I the only one to experience long start-ups?
    Do you have any idea how to solve the problem?

    Hi Jovik,
    not sure if it helps, but worth trying out:
    Open System Preferences - Startup Volume and choos your internal OSX Volume as startup.
    Do the needed restart.
    Good Luck

  • After Bootup it wont back in normal Mountain Lion Osx, Longer start up time nothing normal

    it was been unplug the power and put plug the power on back in and hit IMac turn power on while the Mountain Lion boot up but wont be back normal which
    taken sooo Long cannot be back normal  isnt same as Snow Leopard can do no problem exception Lion huh ? Can anyone know what to do ? to resolve the problem getting back normal Mountain Lion during start boot up time ?

    Remove any items in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
    Same for   HD > Library > StartupItems
    Check to see how much free space there is on the startup disk.
    Click your Apple icon top left in your screen.
    From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info then select click Storage from the menu.
    Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space. Not enough free space can slow down the startup time.

  • Very long applet load time with JRE 1.5 - HELP!!

    My applet is taking forever to load and init using JRE 1.5.
    With JRE 1.4.2_06 it takes a matter of seconds to load and init. The same 1.4.2_06 compiled code running on JRE 1.5 takes ~ 17 minutes!!! Is anyone having a similar experience? I've seen other similar posts related to past plug-in versions, but nothing related to 1.5. The same problem occurs if I compile the code with JDK 1.5 and run with JRE 1.5.
    This extreme example happens on a 533 MHz Win2000 pc with 524 MB RAM.
    A desktop with 3 GHz P4, 1 GB RAM running WinXP SP2 doesn't have an appeciable delay (a couple seconds).
    A laptop with 2.21 GHz AMD Athlon 64, 512 MB RAM running WinXP SP1 takes about 8 seconds to load the applet.
    I don't believe it's running yet in the init method during this long wait time. I don't see any print statements, but the basic layout of it is the following:
         public void init()
              applet = this;
              // Setup Look and Feel
              try
                   UIManager.setLookAndFeel (UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName());
              catch (java.lang.ClassNotFoundException e) {System.err.println("Error setting Look and Feel.");}
              catch (javax.swing.UnsupportedLookAndFeelException e) {System.err.println("Error setting Look and Feel.");}
              catch (java.lang.IllegalAccessException e) {System.err.println("Error setting Look and Feel.");}
              catch (java.lang.InstantiationException e) {System.err.println("Error setting Look and Feel.");}
              // Setup background coloring
              HeaderFile.bgcolor5 = UIManager.getColor("Panel.background");  //new Color(212,208,200);
              HeaderFile.bgcolor6 = UIManager.getColor("desktop");
              applet.getContentPane().setBackground(HeaderFile.bgcolor6);
              // Splash screens
              urlSplash = getURL("AesGuiLarge.jpg");
              ImageIcon_Splash = new ImageIcon(getURL("OmniViewSplash_noWords.jpg"));
              ImageIcon_OmniView = new ImageIcon(getURL("OmniView_wordOnly.gif"));
              // Setup Intitialization panel
              final InitializationPanel initPanel = new InitializationPanel();
              contentPane = getContentPane();
              if (preRelease == true)
                Label label = new Label("PRE-RELEASE");
                label.setFont(new Font("SansSerif", Font.BOLD|Font.ITALIC, 11));
                 JPanel panel = new JPanel();
                   panel.setBackground(Color.yellow);
                   panel.add(label);
                   contentPane.add(panel, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
              contentPane.add(initPanel, BorderLayout.CENTER);
              Thread initialize = new Thread ()
                   public void run()
                            System.out.println("\n***** Initialize thread start *****\n");
              initialize.start();
         }Any help would be appeciated.

    I've discovered where the bulk of the delay is coming from.
    I have 23 default *.properties files in my project. These files contain the English translation of all displayable strings for Internationalization (I18N). The default naming convention is "text.properties".
    For those who don't know I18N, here's a brief synopsis of what happens. ResourceBundles are used to get the strings that are displayed. if your local computer's language/regional settings are English/US, then when the ResourceBundle searches for the file that contains the strings it first looks for a file named text_en_US.properties. If that file is not present or the string is not located, it then looks for a file named text_en.properties. If that file is not present or the string is not located, it then looks for the default file named text.properties. My properties files are all default named.
    I used the Java Console tracing capability to see what was happening and this is what I saw. This is happening for every .properties file:

    None of the files in these traces exist. JRE 1.5 is attempting to set cookies on each of these non-existent files. There is approximately a 5-8 second delay that occurs before each attempt times out. So for each of my 23 properties files this translates to 575-920 total seconds (or 9-15 minutes).
    I tried turning off cookies, but the timeout still occurs.
    Can anyone explain why this is happening and how to fix it?

  • MacBook Pro 15 Retina Haswell - Long start up time

    Just received my BTO, maxed out MBP 15, 16gb ram, 2.6, 1TB ssd. It took almost 90 seconds to boot up, as well as doing re-start machine. Is this normal? Been reading the forum and seems like everyone else MBP boot up in about 20 seconds or less. Mine just came 3 days ago, came with mavericks installed. Nothing else been added other than moving my iTunes library from older MBP. Please advise, what steps I need to do to check, what to turn off (if any), etc.

    Hi, I'm having the same problem. My MacBook Pro is new and came with the Leopard 10.5. It's taking 2 min to reestart. I've already tried to reinstall the system with "erase and install", but it did not help. Even the first time after reinstalling the restart is already slow.
    Have anybody heard anything about how to fix it?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Long start up time after Leopard install on MacBook Pro...

    Hi, I just bought a MacBook Pro recently and upgraded it to Leopard
    But ever since then, every time I start it up it takes over a minute to load everything
    On Tiger, it would only take at most 20 seconds
    It would just stay on some blue screen for a while, about 30 or 45 seconds before completely starting up.
    Any suggestions on how to fix this? I used a clean install of Leopard

  • Very long portal load time in IE

    Hi,
    I have few users who reported that our portal was running really slow.  Using HttpWatch (http trace tool), I learned that their browsers were taking three to four times longer to load portal pages than it should take.  HttpWatch also showed that more than half of transaction time was spent on waiting to get response after sending a request to load innerpage inside the framework page.
    Now, it gets confusing.
    Only these few users are having this problem.  They have the same problem even when they logon to someone else's computer and visit the portal.  Others who log on to these users' computer and visit the portal do not have this problem.  I think this eliminates problem on the clients' computers, network, portal server, and portal configuration.
    I don't know where to look to trouble shoot this.  Did anyone have a similar problem?  Does anyone have suggestions on where to look to troubleshoot this?
    Thank you.
    Joon,

    Hi,
    It could be that these users have different Portal Desktops.
    Normally Light Desktops loads faster than Default Desktops.
    So look into Portal rules to check if these users are assigned different desktops.

  • My MacBook Pro is hanging for very long periods of time whenever I try to perform any functions.

    Hello Collective Wisdom,
    I have a MacBook Pro from mid-2009 and have recently experienced some problems. There's an above-average bootup time, and whenever I try to perform any functions (say, open a browser window, go into Finder, launch an app, try to type a URL, search for anything), the Spinning Ball of Death comes up for about 5-7 minutes before the function resolves.
    I've been able to get into Disk Utility and it suggested I use Command + R at the bootup screen to do a HD Repair, which I did. But the problem is still occuring.
    What do I Do?

    The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
    If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Long start up time

    I got my 3g in June and up until this week it would start up in about 22 seconds. Now it takes one minute and 5 seconds. It is driving me crazy. I tried restoring it. No difference. I tried resetting the settings. No difference. I tried taking off the last few aps, no difference. What can I do to get it back to the 22 seconds?

    my wife's 2g and my 2G took 22 seconds to boot (using 2.x and 3.x). my 4G with 4.1 takes around 46 seconds. so much for a faster processor, eh?? the OS neutered the processor.

  • Long Image Loading Times From LR to CS6?

    Hello Folks,
    I seem to be experiencing very long image loading times when loading an image into CS6 from LR4.
    When I right click an image in LR4 and select edit-in CS6, CS6 immediately starts up, and loads. But after CS6 is fully up on my screen, I get
    a spinning ball first, then spinning white/grey circles, until my selected image appears within CS6.
    I am operatinng with an iMac 27 2.8G with 8G of memory and using SL 10.6.8 I have about 300G of free space on my HDD.
    Any ideas or suggestion or settings in CS6 I might need to look at would be appreciated.
    I never experienced this issue as I recall in CS5.

  • Long bios load time with gtx970 - maybe need gpu bios update?

    I just installed my gtx 970 and it all runs fine.  However I get a very long bios load time on boot up.  Normally it only takes a second or two with a single beep.  With the 970 though I get the single beep and the bios load screen, but it sits at that screen for a long time, then another beep, waiting, eventually another beep, and after some more waiting windows will start to load.
    My problem is that now I can also no longer get in to the bios. I have tried even plugging in a ps/2 keyboard to see if maybe that could get me in.  The farthest I get after hitting delete to enter is I just end up at a black screen. My mobo has no onboard gpu output, so its not like its trying to go to a monitor I cant see.
    So would any gpu bios updates fix this? I am currently at the latest bios for my board which updated it to a uefi bios.
    cpu: i7-2600k (yes Im aware I will only have pcie2)
    mobo: gigabyte z68 d3-b3
    ram: 16gb
    gpu: MSI gtx 970 Gaming (previous was an evga gtx 660)

    Under bios features, is there a option called boot mode select?
    Try to switch to "legacy only", save and reboot.
    Are you using HDMI connector? Try to use DVI.
    Sorry for my english!
    I dont remember seeing any boot mode select.  As far as connections I am using all DVI for my monitors. I have also tried only having a single one connected in case there were issues with multiple monitors

    with those old boards, you need ME8 to works with modern cards
    ask gigabyte support about it
    Thanks Ill try emailing them.  Is ME8 some other bios? Just never heard of it before
    -edit
    After reading up it looks like it was just a revision to allow ivy bridge devices, which happened a long long time ago on a bios update:
    Support Intel 3rd generation 22nm E1 stepping CPU (Ivy bridge)
    Improve power on issue
    Update ME / CPU code
    Unless theres something else Im missing about ME8

  • Found my solution for my long start up. but more questions

    When I first upgraded to 10.5 I had this problem (long start-up times and the long blue screen), did a clean install and all was good.
    A few days ago it happened again all of a sudden. I did an archive and install, all was good.
    It did it again today [:(] so I went about to try and troubleshoot it.
    *Come to find out when my iPod mini is plugged in i get the slow start. when I unplug it and restart its fine. If its plugged in during startup it goes slow, as soon as I unplug the iPod mini from the USB port it loads right up.
    Anyone know why that is?

    Thanks for the reply. Thats what I figured. I've all ready fixed itunes so it wont open when the ipod is connected. But the problem remains.
    I also just noticed that when its plugged in during startup I do not get the startup chime. I also tried it in different USB ports (between the two on the front) which had the same effect.
    Also it does not matter if the ipod mini is on the charger. Same effect with just the empty dock plugged in. Know why that is? Could it be the dock is bad?
