This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)

G4 not starting up, black screen, noisy fan, chimes OK then nothing, after a few mins very loud fan!

Anyone else had this? On start up chimes as normal but screen refuses to come on. Have swapped monitors and same happens on the newer one. G4 was making noises before last week with very loud fan cutting in from time to time. Got lots of work on that computer! Typical, not all backed up! Is it the logic board? How much does that cost to sort out?

Hello, it's going to be tough to find anybody to work on G4s these days, Apple doesn't.
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Does the Video card have a fan on it? Does the fan spin freely?
If worse comes to worse, you can pull the drives & get the info off of them with one of something like these...

My computer has been making very LOUD fan noises. I know this cant be normal. How can I fix this issue?
This has been going on for a while now. As soon as I turn on the computer....the noise starts.

Go check out Activity Monitor on your Mac. It will show you which programs are running, and how heavy their use of your CPU is.
When mine does this, for some reason, I have a bunch of "Managed Clients" running at once. I use Act. Mon. to shut them down, and my Mac runs normally.

Very loud fan (or other part?) noise in MacBook Pro

Greetings! My fan (I assume) has recently started making a very loud, horrible noise that sounds like a piece of plastic stuck in the spokes of a bike. It's driving me crazy and making me a burden to be around me when I'm working...which is always. Please help! I'd greatly appreciate it.

Perform a SMC reset:

If there is no change, open the MBP and examine it. Look for dirt an debris, and if found, clean it out. You will need a #00 Phillips driver.
If still no success it may be that the fan is faulty and should be replaced. Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free and definitive diagnosis. It is not an expensive repair.

Brand new U500 has a very loud fan

I received this brand new U500 (customized on Toshiba.com) about 10 days ago - everything works great (love the back-lit keyboard) - but the fan noise is a little louder than what I'm used to. I had a 6-yr old Dell XPS with a quieter fan than this brand new Toshiba machine. Basically if I'm standing 20-30 feet away from the laptop I can hear the fan, and one can wonder if this comes from a refrigerator or a vacuum cleaner working in the background.
Has anyone had a similar experience - is this fan noise something I should just learn to accept or do you think I should do something before the computer comes out of warranty? I really would hate to have to return a brand new computer, but at the same time I think fan issues only get more numerous when a computer gets older.
Just for info, the machine is Satellite U500-ST6322, CORE 2 DUO P7450 2.1GHZ, 4GB RAM, DVD Slot load.

No, that wouldn't make a difference. eMacs are famous for their very noisy fans.
Some say they were originally intended as turbine impellers for Boeing, but were rejected as too large. So Apple picked them up, and modified them for use in the eMac.
eMacs were made to be workhorses in classrooms and their robust design includes that heavy duty fan, which does impose itself quite loudly.
Some people have installed a means to introduce resistance to the fan circuit to lower the voltage and hence the fan speed, in an attempt to quieten it down.
Whilst this practice seems to work, personally I would be concerned about that causing overheating as during summer things can get very hot here, though perhaps would be less concerned if living in the UK.

Old and new battery both ~2 hour life, recently very loud fan

My macbook pro, which was purchased April 2006, had suddenly dropped its battery life from about ~4 hours to ~2 in January. I noticed this because I traveled back home by plane with a 4 hour battery life for winter, and within weeks the life had dropped to ~2.
I already reset the system (i.e., remove battery, hold down start for 5 seconds, etc) with no avail. This was with the old battery. The apple store tried the same thing, was stumped, and decided to just give me a new battery.
The older battery was the replacement for the 'dud' my macbook pro was originally given. This new battery should be perfectly fine, but the battery life is still ~2 hours. I tried the system reset with this battery--which didn't work. I have also reduced the battery life to just about zero then charged it again--which didn't work.
Could there possibly be something wrong with the hardware? What can I do to fix it, what is the best course of action to fix this one problem?

Just a few days ago a fan in the top left corner has begun to behave strangely. It has become very loud and seemingly inconsistent even with low CPU usage. By inconsistent I mean it sounds as if it has become loose or it won't maintain a constant speed. The best description for the sound would be 'boiling water.' What could be the cause for this and how can I go about fixing this problem?
Any input is greatly appreciated!

Have you checked your battery's serial number against the MBP battery exchange program? I did this out of curiousity with mine and it turned that mine was one of the faulty ones! So Apple sent me a new one and I sent the duff one back. It was still fairly new at the time so it still held a good charge.

I had the fan thing but mine was on the right hand side. Your BEST bet...(what I did) open up quicktime and RECORD the noise several times at different operating conditions and save the files.
send your machine to a service centre and ask for an email address to send the files to so the technician can hear what you hear. I recorded it behaving normally as well so they could hear the difference.
The 1st time mine went in it behaved itself for them so they had to give it back to me, that's when I recorded the noises! I emailed the files before I sent my MBP back again, they took one listen and said they'd order the fans, BEFORE I sent it in. They called me to say that the fans were in so in it went for the replacement.
Hope it helps - mine sounded like it was going to explode and rip apart the inside! I can email you the files if you like?

My EMAC G4 has a very loud fan.

I recently bought my first apple machine - a used emac -
running OSX 10.5.8
But the fan is LOUD - not noisy - I mean it's sounding like an air-conditioning unit on medium and makes listening to any music uncomfortable.
I've read that if I installed OSX 10.4 then the fan would run quieter.
Is this the case?

My dv6833 has a very loud fan

my notebook is only two years old and it is VERY loud. the fan runs almost continuously. Any suggestions?

Very loud fan noise

This has probably been dealt with, I have a 2007 intel iMac. It's been running fine but this week the fan has become very loud. Any ideas?

This can probably be reset by doing a SMC reset. Here is what to do on your iMac:
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
• Report back results to us.

Very loud fan, blank screen, nothing more on power-up

I'm hoping for a miracle here... just bought the PB in december (4 months ago). ran fine last night, on battery. plugged it in, burned a CD, ejected it, no problem. shut the lid halfway. came back 30 min later. was still plugged in but had shut down completely. tried to turn it on but only the fan came on, VERY loud and foreceful, and nothing else. then the fan stops and the PB is dead. computer was not hot, though. left it off overnight, and now the same thing happens when I press the power: fan comes on VERY loud, lasts about 10 seconds, then everything goes dead.
I've done the PMU reset, nothing. tried starting with [CMD + o f] and didn't work either. I can bring it to a genius but there are no appointments left today and I need this thing to work! any ideas? thanks!

yes, I'd planned on that already but I'm an hour drive from a genius.
I've tried everything else as well. it's just dead as soon as I turn it on, except for the fan. none of the keys work (including all the key combinations that are used on startup). it's as if the PB thinks that it's too hot, so it runs its fan on startup and then just shuts down. open firmware, resetting PMU and NVRAM etc, running as firewire slave drive, start in safe mode, single user mode: none of these work. the only other sign of life (other than the fan) is that the caps lock key's light briefly flashed on powerup. that's it.
I was hoping this might be something someone else has seen. since I'm not getting the "?" icon (indicating missing OS) I'm thinking it might be hardware but NOT hard drive related.

Hp Pavillion dv7 - very loud fan noise (cracking)

If the fan is making a lot more noise than usual and sounds as if it's cracking, this is very likely to be a mechanical issue. By far the best suggestion I can make is that you contact HP straight away and arrange to have this repaired while the notebook is still under warranty.

Very loud fan at all times

The fan on my MacBook is very loud at all times, but it wasn't always like this. I have a little plastic thing underneath the computer that props it up and slants it forward so that there is ventilation for the bottom of the computer, but the fan is still very loud. It's very annoying and distracting...do I just have to deal with it?

it seems that you use ur macbook with a lot of programs opened simultaniously. I don't know exactly how much CPU does each of these programs use - but if you're using over 50% CPU the fans will ramp up to about 5000 - 6000rpm. At the rpm the fans are certainly noticable, but on my MacBook not overly loud - mind you, I had HP Pavilion zd8000 with 3 fans - that sounded like a vacum cleaner. So my point of reference is somewhat extreme.
You should download CoreDuoTemperature monitor and see what your overall CPU usage is - if its in the 50's and higher - then the fan will spin quite fast. On the other hand if you're just browsing the web and have iTunes opened - your CPU shouldnt get over 25% - and the fans should be spinning at less than 2000rpm, which is completely silent on my Mac.

Very loud fan after suspend mode

Hi,
i installed the current arch version on my sony vaio laptop.
when i close my laptop the machine goes into suspend mode. when i open the laptop, after 3 seconds or so the fan starts. Very very loud.
I had the same issue under ubuntu. after some googling i found some forum entries about a bug within the kernel.
the output of sensors shows me that everything has no critical temperature.
Has anyone same experience with noisy fan after suspend mode?

It will or can happen but you can reduce it somewhat maybe using SmcFanControl (2.1.3.1 - wwww.macupdate.com ) to keep the fans above default by 200 rpm. And run Hardware Monitor to monitor temps as well. They may be running much warmer than they could/should/ought to.
1GB and your system was on starvation express! ouch. 4GB is more of a normal minimum even. 4 x 1GB is nice balanced setup. 2GB DIMMs might be warmer, run 70C perhaps. And they use about 15W each.

Very loud fan sound, can't get video, system still running...help?

I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere here or throughout google. Can't find a similar problem.
We have a G4 tower here at work that we run FileMaker server on. It pretty much just sits there and we all connect to it remotely and use the FileMaker on our own machines. It's usually not even touched unless Filemaker needs to be restarted or something along those lines. It shares a monitor with another system so its not usually even connected to a monitor.
Well - today there is a loud fan noise coming from it that we havent heard before. So we went to hook up the monitor and can't get any video. It was fine in the past week or so because we have been on it with the monitor.
FileMaker must still be running fine because we can still connect...for now...but we can't load up a screen to properly shut down, or run the backup or anything to safely turn the machine off. I am not sure which OS is currently installed because I can't get to that info.
Our guess is that the video card died, and that is the video card fan spinning...but if that were the case, would the software running still be fine like it is?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Our tech guy can't make it out until tomorrow morning and we're afraid to have to wait that long...

G4 tower covers a lot of G4s; it would help to have more specific model information. I think some of the later ones (not my DP800 QS) had software controlled fans. It's possible part of the operating system has crashed and the fan is automatically going into full speed to automatically prevent overheating. The rest of the OS may still be running and explaining why you can get to your files. I'm not sure about the video though. Perhaps somebody else has something more constructive but with that kind of thing I can't help but feel you'll just have to switch off the machine and restart it.
