Very loud Mac mini CPU cooler

I have the newest Mac mini (1,5 GHz) running under Tiger 10.4.5.
Sometimes even when i work in MS Office or browsing Internet (the CPU usage is very low) the CPU cooler system begin to blow very load for a few minutes.
What is the key of this event?

The mini's cooling fan is directly linked to the load the processor is under, thus the higher the load and the longer it lasts the more the fan will spin up.
Easiest way to check what's causing the fan to activate is to open Activity Monitor (in Applications/Utilties). This is like the Windows Task manager in that it lists every process the system runs, and can also show overall CPU load. When the load goes high, look at the list of processes to find which one(s) show highest demand. More than likely it's something on a web page you're browsing (Flash animations for example).
If you want to keep a general eye on how hard your system is being worked, but don't want the distraction (and CPU load!) of Activity Monitor, then download a copy of MenuMeters (available at www.versiontracker.com) and install that. Once installed, find the menu meters preference pane and enable all the meters - they'll appear in the menu bar to the left of the clock and will show you network activity, memory use, paging activity, disk read/writes and CPU load. This is a useful at-a-glance tool for troubleshooting and general monitoring.

Does the new Mac mini have a user upgradeable CPU?

The processor of the new mini is most definitely soldered in. Thus, it is not upgradeable.
Minor point of accuracy: Mac Pro and current iMac models have socketed processors, and thus can be upgraded. This procedure is not endorsed by Apple, and would thus void your warranty (if your example still carries a warranty). On the Mac Pro it is a fairly straightforward process, but certainly not so easy on the iMac.

  • Mac mini CPU

Is the CPU in a brand-new Mac mini (2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5) really slower than the Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz in my 2008 iMac? Or is it not possible to compare clockspeeds one-on-one?

As an example of what Kyle has referred to, and to show this is the likely explanation, have a look at http://macminiforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=374, with another reference to the 750MHz speed report in the profiler at http://blog.danbartels.com/archive/2005/02/03/348.aspx

  • Very Slow Mac Mini / Decreasing Memory?

    Hi,
Unfortunatly I'm having a problem with my Mac Mini. For an unknown reason my Mac Mini (Mac OS X 10.6, Snow Leopard) has been running extemely slow the last few days. I have reset the Mac a countless number of times now and done everything I can think of to fix the problem. I have noticed that occasionally the Mac will work fine for a few minutes, until suddenly the free space on my Macintosh HD will start to decrease. Roughly 1 or 2 GB of free space starts to disappear every few minutes. Please could someone offer me some help. I would be extremely greatful.
    Thanks a lot,
    Ant

    Thanks for the welcome.
The only thing I am running is Finder. For the first 3-4 minutes though everything is fine, no matter what I run (e.g. Internet...). The problem only occurs when the Macintosh HD available free space starts to randomly decrease every few minutes.

  • Intel Mac Mini, CPU nap?

    Hi
I have had a Mini 1.66 since April. It has never napped the CPU when idle. I read somewhere that the Coreduo could not nap, but recently someone said his did.
I wonder if you could share your experiences on this topic?
It is easy to see if it is with this little gem, CoreDuotemp. Some CPUs will step down to 1.0 Gb when idle for a while, and some won't.

Same problem here, I have got a mini with 2 gig RAM and performed every hardware checks possible and no problems found. However, third party software makes it randomly reboot. I also suspect that there is some excess heat creation running multiple programs, so could be a combination. It seems even worse after latest updates, currently running 10.4.7. I am going to have the powersupply and logicboard checked.
Seems Apple still has some glitches migrating to Intel.

  • Mac Mini CPU 140* F???

I just bought my Mac today, and I'v had it on for an hour or two, and the CPU is 138* F. Is this normal for a less then two hour Mini? all I have been doing is updates, some front row, applications on mac (not for long and I also quit them from right clicking the dock) and a lot of internet.
This cant be normal for a new mini. It has plenty of circulation around it. I also know its set up like a laptop, so it can be a little hotter then a PC.
Thank you to all who respond!

That sounds pretty OK to me for a CPU temperature. Those notebook CPUs can run up to 180 degrees or more.
Is you fan ramping up and getting noisy?
The Mini is pretty good at managing its temperature. Generally you can just ignore it and let it take care of business on its own.
The only time I get interested in Mini temps is if the fan ramps up and gets noisy. Generally that only happens if the mini is poorly ventilated or you are running a CPU intensive program for a long time, like video encoding.

  • Cooling my Mac mini

I have a 2011 Core i 5 mac mini with the AMD HD6630m video card and while playing games like world of warcraft or Team fortress 2 my mac mini fan runs at 5000Rpm's and my temps get up to 90-95c this is prob ok temps for the mini but it is hot
so i have found a way to keep my mac mini cool and even cool to the touch even after 3 hours of gaming my temps never get past 80c and the mac mini is cool to the touch all i did was use a 120mm Antec Fan and a spare 12v DC power supply the picture below will give you an idea .
this really really helps to have a small fan blow air from the side or from the front ( do not use fan behind the mini because of the hot air that has to exit the mac)
just tought some of you would like to know that you can keep these mini's very cool while gaming with a simple fan

It could have accumulated dust.....I periodically remove the plastic bottom cover and blow the inside with a can of compressed air......

  • My mac mini is noisy!

I was just wondering if any one else has a loud mac mini. the fan is constantly going on and off for 5 minute intervals. i just installed 2G of RAM but it was loud before that. I want it to stay on my desk but geez, it's kind of annoying.

What you could check before bringing it to the store is my little story:
I was using a 1.4 GHz PowerPC Mac Mini since August 2005. In March 2006, I bought a 1.66 GHz Intel Mac Mini and migrated my old data and programs using the Migration Assistant (via Firewire cable).
Since I had the Intel mini, I found the fan noise very disturbing - like a vacuum cleaner. Checking Activity Monitor (in the Applications/Utilities folder) helped me to find out that the AutoProtect module of my Norton Antivirus generated constantly a 100% CPU-load, which then caused the fan to kick in at > 5000 rpm.
I have uninstalled Norton Antivirus now and the fan operations returned to normal (around 2000 rpm even when ripping a DVD).
Doesn't have to be Norton Antivirus - just check if you have some very CPU-consuming processes running.

  • Mac min Late 2012 fan speed

Fan speed in my mac mini is always 1800 rpm, when is CPU temperature 40 and when is temperature 85. Is this normal?

By default it probable won't kick up the fan until closer to 90 C (194 F) and then the fan will shoot up to the maximum speed.
If you want more control, try Lobotomo Software: MoofMenu or  iMac HDD Fan Control
With FanControl when my Mac Mini is cool the fan runs a the default speed,
then as it warms up to above 138 F, the fan gradually speeds up and increase's the cooling.

  • Mac mini core solo upgrade

    hi
I have been reading about a Mac mini CPU upgrade from a 1.5Ghz core solo to a 1.83ghz Core 2 duo. I was wondering if I managed to get a CPU for it, would the genius bar at apple store be able to put it in for me as I don't want to take all the motherboard out in such a tiny such a tiny computer and I would also get 2GB ram for the mini as well. I need a core 2 duo due to it been 64bit for Mac OS X Leopard
hope to hear from someone soon
    Thanks

I second Gordon's estimation of the genius bar's willingness to do such work. You might find an Apple certified technician at an Apple certified repair concern that may do such work, but that would probably not qualify it for warranty consideration. If you don't want to do it yourself or have someone not at the genius bar do it, you're probably better off selling it and getting a new Core 2 Duo Mini.

    k...
Boot the mini into TD mode
Connect it to the "other" Mac
Insert the install disk in the "other" Mac
Start the installer which will reboot the "other" Mac
Once the "other" Mac has restarted and is running from the install disk, you should be able to select the Mini's drive (the FW disk) as the install destination. If not, go into the Disk Utility (under the "Utilities" menu) and check out the FW disk. You may need to "repair" it, repair permissions or reformat it depending on the condition of the disk and the type of partition it contains.

  • Mac mini 2012 - Video Problem (Not HDMI Flickering)

    Hello guys,
I have a problem with video, it causes to shut down the monitor while is playing Chefville in facebook, i had no idea why would to turn off monitor. It doesn't present any "beep" sound, it seems Intel HD4000 is a defective.
I waited like 15 minutes when mac mini is cooling, i pressed a button to turn on, the monitor works.
I think it's overheating Intel HD 4000 cause to shut down the monitor.
    How to prevent this problem?
    Thanks!

Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
Does it use Flash or Java?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Mac mini server temporarily?

We have a Leopard Server on a Mac Pro, but I'd like to test the new features of SL server and not having another intel machine to check it out, I'd like to get a new mac mini server to do so. However, I'd like to transfer that installation to my current Mac Pro if the feature work as advertised. So first, can I do this? Second, can I install a client version of SL on the mac mini afterwards not to "loose" that machine?
    TIA
    Jeff

    David.Austin.Allen wrote:
You get a very normal Mac Mini.
It is not a normal Mac mini. Instead of a Super drive it has two 500 GB HDDs. If you need a Superdrive then you spend another US$99 to get the ext USB Superdrive for the MacBook Air or whatever 3rd party drive you prefer.
We are also looking at a mini as well and have the extra drives but we have a question that fits in with this discussion....
Since Server is the OS for this Mac, are you sure that it is a regular install disk for Server or is it a Restore DVD, which are Mac specific and would probably not be usable in a Mac Pro?
So what we are curious about can anyone confirm if this is a restore DVD or not? And then more specifically even if this is only a restore DVD not could the license key be used with a regular SL server install disk? Or is it specific to the restore DVD and mini server?
We have found that we have a use for the mini and its two 500 GB drives as a non server machine. So we wonder if we could use the license key with an install on a regular xserve. It would save us about $100 over getting a high end mini and buying a regular SL server license.
Any feedback on this would be helpful. Thanks

  • Symantec AntiVirus LiveUpdate hangs my mac mini intel

Hello. I have an intel mac mini running mac osx 10.4.6 I
installed norton antivirus corporate edition (site-licensed
at my university) and all worked well.
That is, it did until I installed the firmware update on
the mini. Since then, when I try to run live update, the
system hangs, and all I can do is move the cursor around
the screen with the mouse. Can't click on anything, can't

I can't find any information on this on the symantec site.

I don't know what is causing your issues, but in the meantime you can get the latest virus definitions from sites such as MacUpdate (just type "norton" in the search field).
FYI definitions for Norton Antivirus X 9 will also work with Norton AV X 10.
BTW there have been two firmware updates for Intel-based Mac minis (Firmware Update 1.0.1 and SMC Firmware Update). Which one did you install before the issue came up ?
