  • Setting up a mail server on a 2010 MacMini Server

    Hi,
I am having great difficulty in setting up my Mail server on my 2010 MM server.   Setup is as follows:
    1.  Domain name hosted by dyndns.org with mail forwarding setup to forward incoming mail to my mail address <[email protected]>
    2.  Outgoing mail is being sent from the server via my local ISP using their relay server
    3.  Mail Server settings in Server app shown as "Provide mail for: mail.domainname.org"
    4.  Authentication set to: "Relay outgoing mail through ISP"
    5.  dyndns.com confirm that the domain host side is set up correctly.
    6.  Local ISP confirms that local relay service is set up correctly.
Problem is Mail account cannot be activated in Apple Mail.    email setup details in my server Mail app are as follows:
         Account Type:    POP
         Email address:   [email protected]
         Full Name:         my name
         Incoming Mail Server:   mail.domainname.org
          User Name:      admin
Password:        password on the dynsdyn.com srever
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):   Local ISP providers mail relay service
Has anyone any idea where this setup is wrong?   Also, I am unable to find a server manual for OSX 10.8.4 server.  Does anyone know where I can get this?
Any help you can give is most appreciated.
    Thank in advance
    Roger

    Hi Linc,
For the email address on the server, I create the account in my Apple mail in the normal way.  I fill in the details shown on the accounts setup panel as shown in my original post above. I then click on the "Enable this account" button but it does not connect to anywhere.
For the Server setup, this is also described in points 3. and 4. above.
The result is that the server seems to be setup properly but this may not be the case, which is why I asked my questions.
Sorry I cannot be more explicit but if you are willing to ask deeper questions that might point to the problem, I would be more that delighted to supply the answers if I can.

  • Very low arcsize problem.

For weeks now I've been scrambling to find a cause for our newly created Solaris 11 NAS slowness issue. The server has two SSD drives for Sol 11 in a mirrored rpool and four SATA drives in a mirror'd pool for data with many NFS mounts. It has 16GB of memory and a recently added Samsung SSD log drive for the data pool.
The server uses IP over InfiniBand as a storage network between a ESXi node hosting approx 15 NFS attached vm's.
We have great performance for approximately three days, then for no apparent reason, IO crawls. Going from upper 300MB/s range on the VM's down to 10-15MB/s. When looking on the Solaris side, I see the same throughput change eliminating the IB network or something with ESXi. When this state occurs, system memory goes from (in good state) 2.5G free to ~13GB free. The only solution to this state seems to be a reboot of Solaris.
After doing some research, I found some users out there(not on this forum) that had seen the same issue. They had found it revolved around the arc dropping to a very low state for no good reason. I looked when my server was slow and sure enough, my arc size was under 100M and I had over 13GB free. They had also found that the arc_no_grow flag was getting set to 1 and was not getting set back to 0 to allow the ARC to take back the memory from perceived memory pressure situation which they or myself have nothing running on the servers to create a memory pressure situation.
I have yet to find a fix for this or maybe even a work around. I attempted to set "zfs_arc_min" to 4GB, this change took effect but just like before, after a few days the arc dropped, only difference is this time its seems to be staying up around ~200MB and only dipping in the 90MB's very rarely allowing us to stay up at the time of this writing at over seven days. Since putting this in, IO doesn't bottom out like before, and allows us to still run about 50% of a normal IO.
I dont have dedupe or compression on anywhere. The arc_min set to 4GB is allowing us to at least use the NAS but its a shame that 13GB is free at all times that could be used for cache and we are not getting the great performance we know we can get for a few days after a reboot.
If anyone has any information on this or have experienced this before, please share.

Thank you for your response and suggestions. The server memory is never affected by any process consuming memory or needing memory.I've yet to setup any backups or zfs replication. I was using a perl script called "arcstat.pl" to watch the arc this last time it happened. It literally went a arcsize of 10G down to 574M in under 20 minutes. At that time I was watching all the process memory consumption with prstat and top. I am going to setup sar as you suggested to help better watch things, thank you for that suggestion.

This was on 3/2/12 and the server is still up, arcz is still floating from 90M to at most I've seen looking through the logs ~700M. Before I set the zfs_arc_min, this looked the same with the exception of two things, arcz floated around the 40-50MB's, "c" around the same and IO was terrible.

When trying to update my Mail Account Mailbox Behaviours settings, after making the changes when I try to close the settings pane the following messages occur: Invalid Incoming Mail Server The “Incoming Mail Server” field cannot be empty. The incoming mail server box has in light grey colour: p02-imap.mail.me.com in it and I cannot edit its content. Any ideas what is going on and how to fix it?

    Hi all,
Mattreichenbach is probably on the right track here with a reset of settings.  I think I've determined the issue has to do with cached account information and inconsistencies for the account name.  This seems to crop up when I've changed my password and it hasn't propagated fully to all the servers, devices, certificates, etc.
Hopefully many here are on their way to restoration of service by now but it's clear that a lot of people are having the same issues.  Very frustrating and definitely something Apple needs to resolve:  incoming mail server field grayed out, incorrect autopopulation of different fields, other unanticipated behaviors.  If you're still having issues, though, here's what worked for me...
First, head to the iCloud preferences pane in System Configuration and choose "Sign Out".  When I did this it prompted me with a number of "are you sure" type questions about retaining information on my local machine.  I chose to delete/remove the info each time simply because it should all be restored by the cloud and I didn't want to risk a massive duplication of my data... I will say, I'm back up and running with no issues so I suspect you can make the same delete/remove choices...  But use your own judgment.  I don't want you to lose any data (ie.. please use care as you do this because I cannot bear the thought of causing anyone to experience the pain of data loss).
Once you've signed out of iCloud, restart your system.  When you get back in, head to the Mail, Contacts and Calendars section of your System Preferences and add your account back by choosing the brushed aluminum "iCloud" button.  When it asks for your account name, use your @iCloud.com email address.  I am all but certain my issue had started because one of my devices (iPhone or whatever) had been set up with an email alias specified instead of my @iCloud.com address.
Apple, if you're reading through any of these issues (there are TONS of users having this same problem).  Take note, that your icloud service somewhat frequently is not responding and yet tells the user that the password is wrong and this prompts people to be changing their passwords unnecessarily.  This has happened to me on numerous occasions.  Also, I noticed that last week's outage corresponded to a VERY similar outage exactly one year ago to the day.  Sounds like planned maintenance to me and I think you could do a better job notifying folks so we're not wasting HUGE amounts of time troubleshooting a problem that we have no hope of fixing.
Hope that helps some of you!

  • HT2954 CAnnot change the incoming mail server for iCloud account

I cannot recieve mail because the imap setting is wrong, but I cannot highlight it to change.

Hi, was it maybe setup as a MobileMe or dot Mac account in the first place?
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

  • Why is incoming mail server greyed out and unalterable and mail.app cannot get mail?

I haven't had any iCloud mail for 3 days now. I'm in the UK. When I look at the account settings the incoming mail server shows a greyed out 'p01-imap.mail.me.com'. I've looked at Apples support pages and try as I might I can't configure it as they say I should be able to! Is there a little plist file or something somewhere I need to delete so I can get this thing working again or is it an Apple problem? The UK support pages say iCloud is working. I'm running OSX 10.7.4 on alate 2009 iMac.

I realize that this is a double post, but the info may pertain,
the thread is a little different and may be otherwise missed.
Working with expresslane the issue I was bucked up
to sr. level - they found the problem is 's changeover
to icloud addresses has deleted my primary alternate
but verified email addy as it had an @me suffix. 
replaced this with @icloud but can't as of now restore
the recent mail to that address. I'm told that despite
my MobileMe membership, converted to iCloud, I'm
to lose all my @me and @mac addys. I'd thought they
were grandfathered for us but this may not be true. So,
the issue for me has been explained, though unresolved.
Advice: Beware, be very aware - if you have an old, and
more pretigious, @mac addy. For now, mine still works
but it's my ID so they may let me continue it (?).

  • How can the incoming mail section on an iphone5 disappear? I can send messages but cannot receive them. Shouldn't there be an incoming section like the outgoing mail server section?

I Haven't received incoming email for nearly a week now.  I have checked the settings and the only thing that isn't there is the INCOMING MAIL SERVER section.  The outgoing mail server is there and is correct.  How can I get it back so that I can enter the mail server?

    Hi Olivier,
Thanks very much for that. it worked on my powerbook(running Tiger). I went to the link and followed the instructions and it worked. Did i mention that my dad who has a iMac running Leopard now has the same problem. I thought i would just do the same but the Preference in Mail for Leopard is of course different. There is no icon called "Server Settings" under Accounts section like there is on mine. Do you have a link for the same kind of instructions for Leopard?
    Thanks again,
    Bryce

  • HT2954 it keeps asking for incoming mail server

For some reason my mail has stopped working. The page keeps asking for an incoming mail server. I put in imap.mail.me.com and that is not working. Also, I can't put in my Google mail either. Has apple just stopped using the mail feature? I had a mobile me account and switched to ICloud and now I have all kind of glitches.
    Very frustrated.

  • Error in setting icloud mail on iMac - 'incoming mail server'

I created a new mail account in icloud and cannot edit this account in Mail Preferences on my iMac.  Everytime I try to save my changes i get the following error:
"The incoming mail server filed cannot be empty."
Of course the field is automatically filled in and greyed out so it is not changable.
I have tried various fixes, deleting, setting up again, setting up the iCloud and Mail/etc. in System Preferences...
    Help!

    Hi Suebadu,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know that it can be frustrating when an email account, such as your Gmail accounts, are not working as you would expect. In this situation I would recommend reading over and working through the attached article. The Connection Doctor may provide some further information as to what is causing the errors.

  • Apple Mail app no longer connecting to incoming mail server

    Hi.
I use the integral Apple Mail email client under OS X 10.8.
Until this afternoon, all was well and I could send & receive my emails without any problem. (Suggesting that all the server settings & preferences are correct in Mail.)
This afternoon Mail suddenly was unable to connect to my incoming (IMAP) mail server, and I still cannot get it to connect.
I do still receive email from the same server on my iPhone though, so that suggests that the server itself is working correctly.
I've tried quitting Mail and re-launching it, and I've tried editing the server settings, saving the new settings and then reverting to the old ones and re-saving, but to no effect.
The problem exists on both of the user accounts we have set up on this Mac, and both user accounts use the same IMAP server, but with different names of course.
I'm at a loss as to what might have occurred here, and an even further loss as to what else I can try to resolve the problem.
    Anyone any ideas please?
ps. While I was typing this an email arrived in my Mail inbox! BUT... I still have the little !-triangles by the side of my account in Mail, and when I click on them the 'Alert' tells me that there 'may be a problem with the server or network' and, "The server returned the error: The connection to the server “imap.mail.yahoo.com” on port 993 timed out."
So it looks like I'm getting emails somehow, but there is still a problem somewhere.

I started having this same problem yesterday after installing the Safari 7.0.6 update.  This has to be a coincidence.
I have 11 email accounts setup in Apple Mail.  The only one working now is my work exchange email.  The rest are either accounts I host on my own OS X Mavericks Server using IMAP and SMTP over SSL except for two of them which are GMAIL and iCloud.
Same issue.  The iMac just displays the warning triangle symbol and when I click I get the Unable to Connect dialog with the message.
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “iCloud” or try again.
The server returned the error: The server “p03-imap.mail.me.com” cannot be contacted on port 993.
I have verified the settings on all of my IOS devices and they are the same.  As with the original post, my IOS devices are all able to connect to all of my accounts without any problems.
To try and troubleshoot this issue I switched to another user account and tried to connect to one of my mail accounts and got the same Unable to Connect issue.  I then opened another email client (Thunderbird) and configured the email account exactly the same there (IMAP on port 993 and SMTP on port 587).  Thunderbird was able to connect and retrieve my mail without any problems.  As an additional test I opened up terminal and tried "telnet p03-imap.mail.me.com 993".  I was immediately connected to the iCloud server.
To sum up this does not appear to be a problem with the iMac, the user account, my mail server or the network.  It appears to be a problem with Apple Mail only.
I wonder if there is a plist file or something that needs nuking.

Starting a few days ago, incoming mail is reaching the server but not being delivered to user mailboxes. Internal mail works fine when this happens. Looking at the Queue Viewer doesn't show anything abnormal. The Submission Queue shows nothing.
It is only after I reboot the Exchange Server that the Submission queue will show all the messages waiting to be delivered and they will all be delivered successfully after the reboot. The event logs do not show any error messages.
The server will continue to run fine for a few hours and then the problem starts all over again.
    What could be causing this?

Any 3rd party antivirus/anti-spam software installed on the server? If so, disable and test.

  • TS3988 The correct information in the email address, Full name and Incoming mail server panes are greyed out, and I can get no further in bring my iCloud a/c online. Any ideas? Thanks.

I've just updated and installed Mountain Lion. I've clicked for iCloud for Mail. The correct information in the email address, Full name and Incoming mail server panes are greyed out, and I can get no further in bring my iCloud a/c online. Any ideas? Thanks.

They are grayed out because they are automatically set up whey you check Mail in System Preferences.  If you didn't do that, go back and do so and your iCloud email account will be set up automatically.

  • HT201320 What am i supposed to put as the incoming mail server and the outgoing mail server when setting up my email?

I'm tryingt to set up my email through my school account and i'm not sure what it means when i'm asked to enter a incoming mail server and an outgoing mail server. Help would be appreciated thanks

Since no one here has any idea about what type of mail your school offers...you don't mention what school...your question, as asked, can't be answered. What don't you contact your school's IT dept., or look online. Most schools have instructions on how to do so online.
