Very neeby- Apple computer network- Airport router

I am totally new to Mac computers. I have a good experience with PCs. I will be tentively setting up a mixed machines network at home. I have a few basic questions on Mac network systems.
1- does all macs have a standard Ethernet 10/100 network port which is totally the equivalent of PC ?
2- is it then possible to mix up PCs and Macs on any router/hub/switches made for PC ? (Wireless or not)
3- does the IP settings on Macs OS are similar as on Windows ?
4- if router brand does not matter, what is the advantage of buying a Apple Airport std/wless router over any other brand, cheaper "PC" router ?
thanks a lot for anyone patient, appreciate.

1. Yes, all Macs have an industry standard 10/100 ethernet port. Many now have a 10/100/1000 ethernet port as standard equipment.
2. Yes, a mixed network of Macs and PCs works just fine. Networks are platform independent!
3. You have the same IP configuration options on a Mac that you have on a PC. As with PCs, the default configuration is for a Mac to obtain an IP address automatically using DHCP.
4. The primary advantage that I see for buying an Apple Airport Express or Extreme Base Station is the built in shared USB printer port. If you have experience setting up a network of PCs, the "ease of configuration" of an Apple Airport product is not an issue.

  • Can I use Airport for a computer to computer network AND my wireless router

    ...at the same time?
I've got a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro which I can happily connect together to share files or do screen sharing via a computer to computer airport network, or I can also switch (via Finder's airport menu) to my router's wireless network to access t'internet.
But, is it possible to NOT have to switch this over? I'd like to be able to share both computers' files AND be online at the same time. I'm hoping that the airport network can access the other Mac AND the wireless router simultaneously.
I'm guessing I couldn't use internet sharing on one of the computers because BOTH of them need to be switched to the ad-hoc computer to computer network.
I apologise if this question has been asked in the forums before, but it's impossible to do a meaningful search with keywords "airport" "internet" "computer to computer network" - those words cover pretty much every network-related post!

Airport can only connect to one wireless interface at a time...
However you are going about things the wrong way, what you want is a LAN... and that is exactly what your router provides, connect both computers to the router and then initiate file sharing and other local protocols.
If it does not work you will have to configure your router to enable devices to communicate with each other.
To do so you enter the *router's IP address* into your web browser's address bar, you can find this under *system preferences> network> airport>*
    i.e. some common router private addresses: 192.168.1.254, 192.168.0.1, 10.0.1.10
This will display the router's web interface, you will need to refer to your router's documentation to find out how to configure it, but many are self explanatory or provide on page help. What most "user friendly" routers call it is "device isolation" or something similar, - this needs to be disabled (to allow all clients to communicate with each other).

No, not all network clients -- only the two mac portables and they run together very rarely. The windows machine is hardwired to the modem router combo, and that's always sailing smooth. The mbp that is most used is perhaps 20 feet max from the router - and in another room. But it also happens when I take in into the same room as the router. On occassion, I have noticed while using network diagnostics, that one digit in the IP number sometimes appears to go awry. I then try to set up manually - and it works for a bit but is hugely erratic.
I rigged a hand me down airport express and set up a separate network for the two macs and it ran beautifully for some weeks, but that little piece is now dead and none of the retailers in my suburb seem to have one in stock. I don't want to be forced to buy an airport extreme and here in India, there's no trustworthy online ordering option.
The man from the ISP's been here several times and I don;t think it is a modem/dsl issue because the smartphone connects and the macbook drops when both are the same distance from the router? I am truly foxed and intensely irritated! :-(

  • I recently replaced my dead airport router with a netgear91-5g router and synced it successfully to my Lexmark Pro 915 printer and my computer and yet when I try to print wirelessly I get the message: "printer not connected; printer offline".

I recently replaced my dead airport router with a Netgear91-5g router and synced it successfully to my Lexmark Pro 915 printer and my computer; yet when I try to print wirelessly I get the message: "printer not connected; printer offline". Lexmark support verified that my printer was connected to the new router and the problem was with the computer's printer configuration and they could reconfigure it online if I paid for their "Premium Support" services ($119 for one year, 3 fixes). I declined, feeling sure that this is something I could do if I knew how. Could it be an incompatability issue with OS 10.8.3?

You saved me $$$ that I can ill afford on my fixed income. I was very unhappy with the "support" from Lexmark... what a rip off!  Thank you dwb!

How do I allow Skype to get past network?

You make no mention of which OS you are using.  The following are Yosemite instructions:
    System Preferences>Security & Privacy>Firewall>Unlock the padlock.
Click on the Firewall Options button.
Click the + (plus) button & do the necessary to add Skyp & to allow incoming connections.  When done, click the OK button & lock the padlock.
Restart your computer.  Report back the results.

  • Trouble with airport extreme computer-to-computer network

i'm sure this is something pretty obvious, but i recently bought an airport extreme card for my iMac G4 1GHz so as to create a computer-to-computer network with my MacBook Pro.
I set everything up as per http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=166640 on my iMac, but when trying to join from my macbook i get "error joining network". Signal level on iMac is fine and the two computers are sitting next to each other.
has anyone any ideas, this is starting to do my head in!!!!
    cheers,
    stu

Can you "see" the new Wireless Network you just created on your iMac from your MacBook Pro?
Did you specify a channel in the range 1-11 that is NOT already in use by a neighboring wireless network? If you have no idea about that, pick a number from 1-11.
For starters, I would NOT use encryption. Get it to work without encryption, then add a 128-bit WEP password.
Try opening Internet Connect on your MacBook Pro to initiate joining your network.

  • My family owns an Apple Airport router, and my question is that is there a were to remotely access the router and turn it off and on? Thanks

My family owns an Apple Airport router, and my question is that is there a were to remotely access the router and turn it off and on? Thanks

Richard's suggestion will turn off and turn on the wireless function on your Mac computer......but.....it will not do anything as far as turning your Apple AirPort router on and off.......which seems to be the question that you are asking above.
If this is the question that you are asking, it is not possible to power the Apple router on and off from either a local or remote location.

  • IMac being very buggy with network/Airport

My iMac has all of the sudden been acting very strange within my network. Screen sharing, logging in via the shared sidebar, and accessing my shared music has been very hit or miss. It works one second and the next it doesn't. When it does it's very slow. I also have a MacBook and a Mac Mini and there is no problem communicating between those two computers however they BOTH have the same problems with the iMac. Also the iMac just randomly log off the wireless network. I have tried repairing permissions and even reinstalling the OS. I'm totally stumped. Thanks for any help.

I don't know if anyone was keeping up with my post but I did a hard reset on the Airport and everything seems to be working fine now. The only reason I didn't do this in the first place is because the problems were only happening with one computer and so I thought the problem was with my iMac.

  • Hi there, I'm thinking of buying both a new MacBook Pro and a small 22 inch LED tv for my kitchen... what would I need to be able to use (wireless of course) the tv as a monitor for the new computer? Apple tv? Airport Express? something else? Thanks.

    Hi a,
    http://www.mctiviausa.com/
There has been "talk" on and off of Apple TV doing it (and people have done it with a hack), but I haven't really followed it.
It would be a whole lot cheaper getting an adapter (as needed) and cable and simply pluggin it in when you're in the kitchen.

  • Mountain Lion, Apple TV and computer to computer network

    Hi there,
I have a second generation Apple TV with the 5.2 software update.
As per these instructions, I cannot seem to create a computer to computer network which the Apple TV will recognise.
The computer to computer network I create works because my iPhone can find and connect to it. But the Apple TV cannot even find it.
I cannot use the Internet Sharing feature because I do not have an Internet connection (or any other network connection) to share from any other input (ethernet, etc) on my Mac.
    What are my options? Thanks!
    Kiel

Not tried to set one up recently, but AppleTV 2 and 3 don't seem to play well with WEP which may be the issue here.

  • I was told that with Mountain Lion I would be able to view my computer through the router onto my TV screen through Apple TV. How?

I was told that with Mountain Lion I would be able to view my computer through the router onto my TV screen through Apple TV. How?

In technical support, sometimes you have to make educated guesses. I'm sorry that you were offended.
iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her.

  • HT1331 I just bought a airport wireless router I have a time warner cable modem. I have hook up the modem correctly to my new apple airport router and my modem is not working with the apple airport router. what do i need to do?

I just bought a airport wireless route and I have a time warner modem. My problem is my modem is not connecting to my apple airport router. What do I need to do?

Power cycle the cable modem.. you may try leaving it off 5min.. might be enough.. sometimes you need 15min or even longer.. Followed by power cycle of the AE.
Nothing else should be connected to the modem.. except the router that will get the public IP as they only hand out ONE>

  • Apple computer on a Windows based Network

Okay, here is the question. We have a network where I work that is solely setup for non-Mac computers. We have just purchased 2 Macs to use for doing multi media. The Director of Information Systems feels it necessary to keep the new ones off the network in fear of the new Macs spreading viruses and other bad mojo throughout the the network. Have there been any such reports of this happening? I've tried to explain to her that since we are just using for an internet connection it shouldn't do any harm or even if we were hooked up to the network it wouldn't do any damage. Help me save the embarassment.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
As already pointed out you may well get a better answer elsewhere however Macs network very well with Windows networks and viruses? you've got to be joking You can install Anti Virus on the Mac to prevent them spreading viruses onward. They will be the only machines standing on the day your firm gets hit anyway.
OS X is inherently more secure than Windows for a variety of reasons including the fact that you need to enter the Admin password to make system changes or install software (so nothing can install itself - ad/spy/mal ware etc).
