Very noisy cd/dvd drive, often ejects

I posted this in the other forum, but it looks like this area gets more traffic, which means I have a better chance of getting an accurate response, so I'll post the link to my question here.

Merc,
This is not normal and since you just purchased your iMac and it should still be under warranty, your best bet is to call Apple. While what consistutes excessive noise is always relative, the issues of iTunes taking up to a minute to open and of the disks re-ejecting are indisputable (unless there are defects with the disks, but I'm assuming the problem you describe occurs consistently and without a pattern).
If it's not a DYI repair then you may be without your computer for a few days, but better that than a defective drive.

DVD Driver keeps ejecting DVD and requesting a Blank, I insert a Blank and the same message keeps coming up, any suggestions ?

    Hi
    a. You are using Cheap media as Memorex, NoName etc DVDs - I only use Verbatim
    b. You use a DL-DVD or DVD+/-RW type of media - Old Macs can not use DL-DVDs - I only use DVD-R
    c. Your DVD-burner needs a cleaning - Cleaning DVD without liquid but the brush type
    d. Is there OK free space on Your Start-Up (Macintosh HD) hard disk - I never go less than 25Gb free.
    e. Can You describe the material used to create Your DVD
    - Video Codec/s
    - Photo file formats
    - Audio file formats
iDVD can not use all but only a few of them - still it tries and then often fails
    Just to start by.

I can't figure out why it's doing this as till December 2013 it was doing fine? I had to reinstall OX and Maverics as my Laptop was lost and recovered and I had actioned erase all data.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you suspect it could be the latter, you may just have to replace the optical drive, or add an external one that supports Mac OS X utility booting, and not use possible rootkit CDs again.

  • Dvd drive wont eject - using windows 7 - G50-70 i5

Im having problems with my dvd drive.  Have seen a few similar posts on here but I cant get anything to work.  The drive did initially work, but now I have installed windows 7, it wont eject.  The drive can read discs.  When I press the eject button, the light comes on, and I get the usual noise of the drive, but it wont eject.  It will eject using a paperclip, but not using eject under my computer.  Ive installed the lenovo eject utility, but no idea how to use it, but I dont think that having to go into the bios everytime or to use a paperclip is acceptable on a new laptop.  Would be grateful for any tips to try before I send it back.  For example, where can you download a mat**bleep**a driver or firmware update? Ive searched but they dont seem to have a website.  All I seem to get is lots of utilities that want paying for downloading anything.  Many thanks for any help, Tristan

    hi Tristan,
    Welcome to the Forums.
AFAIK, when you press the eject button, it sends a signal to the logic board, and the logic board sends a function to the eject machanism to release the tray. From your observation, it's likely that there's a mechanical or other physical failure inside the ODD that's preventing the tray to eject.
The Lenovo Eject Utility on the other hand is design for Thinkpads (haven't tested this on Ideapads units) and its function is the same when you right click on the DVD Icon and chooe Eject.
       - Sample image
I recommend you contact lenovo and report your findings as you may likely need to send the unit for service.

  • Macbook DVD drive repeats eject sequence even when empty

Giving an old macbook (first model, white, 2006) away to a friend. He wanted Windows7 on it (don't ask ) so I got a copy from him and installed. Decided to use the bootcamp of Snow Leopard above Leopard, since Windows7 wasn't released yet when Leopard was released. Still I was a bit ambivalent as I didn't know if it would be suited to the rather old hardware of the macbook. All seemed to go well but after installation of the drivers of the Bootcamp CD I ejected the dvd drive and it started acting weird. What it does now is it keeps ejecting the drive, whether there's a cd in there or not. When I inject a cd (or dvd, no difference), I have to wait for the eject/load sequence to play out since it's locking the cd drive in between. When the cd/dvd is in, the drive won't read it, instead it will rumble a bit and eventually (about 20 seconds) spit out the CD.
Seems like a rather small coincidence that the drive, after all these years, would fail at this exact moment in time.... thinking there's something else to blaim but not sure how to proceed. What are your tips?

Nobody have any ideas or suggestions as to what steps I might undertake to solve this? Anything is helpful, thanks!

  • Noisy CD/DVD drive

I have a 2009 MacPro, running the latest system etc.
For quite some time my CD/DVD drive is really noisy when reading discs.
I called Apple Support, but they wouldn't send me a new drive, since it still reads.
I'm some 90 miles and a ferry ride from the closest Apple store, so taking it in is a huge hassle and lots of money.
Although I've had ongoing Bluetooth issues with the machine (over a year) and maybe I'll have to bite it and take the thing in.
They have sent techs out numorous time to try and solve the Bluetooth, it still isn't right. (it has to be turned 90 degrees to work, so the mouse is in direct 'line of sight' to the rear of the machine).
Anyway, has anyone else had really noisy drives on these and how did you solve it?

  • Pavilion Slimline DVD drives and eject wire...

I tried to replace the DVD drive on my Pavilion Slimline with an HP dvd1270i DVD drive. Had no problems installing it until I tried to plug the eject wire to a plug on the new DVD drive. Problem is, there's no plug on this drive to attach the eject wire to. The DVD drive that originally came with the Slimline does have this plug. Can someone recommend a DVD drive for the Slimline that does have a plug for the eject wire? Or is there a way to transfer the plug from the old drive to the new drive? Thanks in advance...

I have similar problem on my micro PC case from HP
CD rom tray has not mechanical device for ejecting media but electrical switch instead.
There is no chance to reach eject button on DVD ROM, because it's hidden under doors on the case.
And that {Content Removed: Language Filter Evasion}non standard HP connector for opening CD used on case is not compatible with any DVD ROM I can find in my local store including HP products.
And nobody knows anything about that.

  • Noisy CD/DVD drive on my Satellite A60

Hi I have a Satellite A60 and for some reason the CD/DVD drive makes a terrible noise on some CDs and DVDs but not on others. It sounds as though the CD is rubbing on something but it is not as it now makes this noise with CDs that i have played for ages. Ideas please

    Hi Roger,
There are two possibilities for this problem :-
    1. The CDs themselves may be slightly distorted with the centre hole slightly off-centre, this makes the disc 'wobble' as it spins and can cause the noise that you describe.
    2. The clamping latch in your CD drive may have worn to the extent that it does not lock the CD in position correctly. This will also cause a wobble in the disc as it spins and the accompanying noise.
Since you say the noise occurs on discs that you have used previously I assume that the second of the two options is the cause so before taking any further actions I would recommend checking that the CD drive is not loose in its mounting in your notebook.
Sadly, if all else fails you may need to replace the drive.
    regards,

  • DVD drive often creates a noise

I have a pavilion g6 2314 AX notebook with windows 7 installed, from day 1 the DVD drive is making noise at regular intervals even if there is no discs in it.

There wasn't an early 2012 13" MacBook Pro - what you may have purchased in early 2012 was a late 2011 13" MacBook Pro.
If you're still under warranty - if it's not been one year past your purchase date - you can take you machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them fix the problem. If you're out of your one year warranty - and didn't buy the AppleCare extended warranty - it may cost you to have the drive 'fixed' (I guessing that it will have to be replaced).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Very Jammed CD/DVD drive

Little hands have seemed to have found their way into possession of a DVD and a chance to destroy my iMac G3, slot loader.
A disc was physically jammed into the slot loading CD/DVD drive, upside down. I'm at a loss as to proceeding, and wanted to know if anybody had a fix that didn't involve me opening up the iMac and waging war with all of the little pieces. If there's no solution like that, could somebody recommend a good step-by-step guide to disassembling my iMac, removing the disc drive/disc, then putting it all back together?
    Thanks in advance,

    David;
Trying to figure out if there's a more "contemporary" replacement for the slot loading CDRW in the G3/iMac myself: Mine seems to be experiencing difficulty "swallowing" disks, and subsequenty reading them... and spitting them out again. Looking for perhaps a DVD/CD burner of some sort..
That said, here's a link from MacWorld with an illustrate access process to remove that drive (move considerably down the page to find it)...

  • Cd/dvd drive keeps ejecting cd/dvd!!!

My cd/dvd drive is going crazy. Soon after i put a cd or dvd in the drive, it spits it back out. it sounds as though it is trying to read the disc, but fails. My drive was working normal earlier today, then it went crazy?!? i am not too computer savvy...HELP!

Like I said I was having problems with the drive called AppleCare they told me to do some things I already done they included...
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Holding down the Command(Apple), Option, P, and R and then hold the Power button simultaneously, and told me to do that 3 times and wait for 3 loud buzzing (or some odd sound I can't describe).
Also Resetting System Management Controller (SMC)
Was told to shutdown and disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery after that I had to press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds(I did 10 seconds) and then release the button, then reconnect the battery and AC Adapter and to restart the system.
I was asked to try the drive again and it did not work when I was talking on the phone with the person, they said they could not do any thing becasue I was out of warranty but I asked to talk to a manager or someone higher about all my problems with the MacBook and see if I could get a new unit and he said yes and put me on wait but when I was on wait I tried out the drive again and it worked again.
I do not know if it good again for the long run or it fail and just because of that! This is one of my least trusted Apple systems, for having the plastic replaced, having a hard drive go dead, and having the AC adapter switched out for a different one, and now this drive. This is one odd Apple system!

  • Intel Mini superdrive VERY noisy on DVD-RW close session, media hosed

My Intel Core Duo mini with superdrive has always made LOTS of noise when rewriting DVD-RW (not the first burn).
It all goes well, for example using Apple Backup, but when it closes the session on a re-used disk it spins up REALLY loudly over and over again. It can take 15-20 minutes to close the session.
One disc did this for about 4 backup (erase->rewrite cycles) and then the drive just gave up and the disk was not visible and backup still said "closing session". I had to reboot the box and eject the disk with Disk Utility - after it was noisily spinning up a lot.
Of course the media is now unusable.
Another backup on a virgin DVD-RW from the same batch works. I am pretty sure next time I do it the close session will get noisy again etc.
I am not the only person who notices the loud close session noise and VERY slow closing of sessions - my friend has an Intel Mini Core Duo too and it does it.
    Another firmware update debacle looming?
    Media: Philips DVD-RW 1-4x

    Well here's an update.
I took a working (first burn) DVD+RW (they are all DVD+RW not -RW as previously stated sorry) and copied all the data off it onto my mini. Then I tried to erase it using Disk Utility. That was 30 minutes ago and it is still BUZZING very loudly in 10 second bursts with quite gaps in between. I've given up now and can't get the disk out of the drive, I will have to reboot and get it to throw it out then.
I want to know if I'm the only one with this problem. I will try some other media soon and I will also try the SuperDrive in the PPC G4 mini I have to see if that one is ok with the same media.
In the meantime my DiscRecorder.log shows the sorry tale... and maybe the "burning at 47x" bit is a clue to there being a problem?!!
