VERY NOISY i-MAC

My mid 2010 imac's fans are very noisy and I have had them fixed by Apple approx 5 times! It is happening again and I am trying to get to the route of the problem myself, and so have downloaded a fan control software. In the software you can control the speed of both the Hard drive fans and the Optical drive fans. However this does not control the fan which is making all the noise!!!! which fan is making the noise???
Regards,

If the machine is still under AppleCare, take the machine back to Apple and request they replace the machine. They normally will after 3 repairs of the same problem assuming the machine is covered by AppleCare. BTW  you are not running OS X 9.0.x unless you have a Mac 10-12 years old. Please correct your profile so we know what version of OS X it is running.

  • Power mac G4 silver 2002 - very noisy

Could be everything, very noisy. To be honest is a nightmare to do anything for more than 10 minutes.
Can I reduce the db doing something?
    thank

    Hello Brauner,
Sorry to hear your Quicksilver is misbehaving.
Hold your hand to the metal surrounding the fan - both the case fan and the power supply and see if you can pick up a vibration. Holding a long, thin screwdriver - which acts as a stethoscope - will also work (as long as you don't drop it into the fan).
Dual processor QSs tend to run hot, which is not conducive to long life of power supplies. I fitted a slightly more powerful (and noisier) CPU fan by Evercool - EC6025H12CA - which keeps the CPU cooler and I presume the power supply, too. A slot fan might help, too, though I haven't tried it yet.
Good luck with the Quicksilver; I really like mine and have talked a half-dozen friends into what seems like a QS club.

  • JPGs are "noisy" on Mac, but not PC

    Hi all!
I got a new hybrid camera that I've been playing with. When I load the pictures on my Intel iMac, anywhere there is a dark or black area, it looks very noisy.
Best I can describe it is speckled, colored pixels.
This happens in Preview and iPhoto.
Now, when I look at the same exact pic on a PC, it looks fine.
Is it possible that it's using a version of JPG that the Mac is interpreting differently? Is there something I can set on the mac to get rid of, or lessen, this?
I know the iMac has way better resolution, video card and display than my PC, but I can't imagine it'd make this big of a difference.
When I get home I'll reboot in XP on the iMac and see if it looks the same, but until then does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

The noise level could have something to do with the quality or ISO settings on your camera.
A higher ISO setting introduces noise - I usually use ISO 50 but also ISO 200 for pictures where the light isn't perfect. The ISO 200 shots are always noisier.
One camera seemed to revert its quality (could have been user error too) to the middle ("fine" on a Canon is such a lie. They should call the quality settings "bad", "acceptable" and "good" instead of "normal", "fine" and "super fine") and that introduces noise as well.

  • IMic - very noisy recording

    Hello,
I've bought the Griffin iMic to get an input jack on my iBook G4.
Once it's connected directly on one USB of the iBook, with GarangeBand or any other software that can record sound, the result is very noisy.
It sounds like a Ground problem cause when I put a finger on the jack, the sound is less noisy.
Does somebody know something about this problem ?
    Thanks
    Cedric from France

Is it a sign that something is wrong with the computer?
It may be an indication that the inside of your computer or the display card is full of dust.
The recommended way to clean it is to move your computer to a place where cleanliness is not an issue, and use compressed air to get the dust airborne and out of the Mac. Do this on the white carpet in the living room, and you will be a bum for some time to come.
A vacuum cleaner sounds like a good idea, but it is not. The plastic wands and tools on home vacuums generate very large static charges that can wipe out electronics. They can kill your Mac.

  • (fans?) randomly get very noisy - not sure why

    Hi,
A few days ago my mac pro started randomly getting very noisy from time to time. it sounds like it rev's up to medium-high speed; not the full blast it can do but enough where it is annoying and clearly not normal. It happens every 10 to 20 minutes, goes on for a few, and then quiets down again. I can only assume it is a fan making the noise but dont know for sure.
I really don't know what could be causing it because not only has it not happened before until a week ago but I am not running any intensive apps at all yet it still happens.
I'm not really sure if anyone can help, but would appreciate it if anyone had suggestions on any tests i can run to check if something is wrong or if there is anything I can do about it.
    Thanks

The first thing I would do is open the case and blow out all the dust. If there is a lot of buildup, esp on the heatsink ribbing on the procs and video card, it could easily cause your increased fan activity.

Scratchy noise coming from top end of keyboard. Not effecting performance but very noisy and worrying! What is it? Is my computer seriously damaged? Is it easily fixed? Thanks for any help

It would be helpful if you were to identify the model of MBP you have.
The noise makers on a MBP are the fan(s), the HDD and the optical drive.  Can you locate the exact position where the noise is coming from?
    Ciao.

  • Very slow running Mac Mini

    Hi,
I'd like to thank all people supporting us (users) in these discussions, and especially the person who helped me restoring my MBP's performance,
I'm requesting once again some help for my Mac Mini which is very very slow.
Mac Mini running OS X Moutain Lion + Apple's Server add-on (a few services are running : file sharing mainly).
    Thanks in advance,

Hello Hedi, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • .mov files playing very "noisy"

hello. I have my website, which has several .mov files, which play individually. Certain ones seem to playback very "noisy" and distorted. The original file seems fine when i play via quicktime, but when you watch online, it doesn't look nearly as good.
    Here is the site www.coutroulis.com
then go to "spots" and watch the first two.
    What am i doing wrong?
    thanks in advance

Me again nick, but on the video quality - btw, I really like ur work - I was struck by http://web.me.com/coutroulis/Nikos_site/neulasta.html, which is exhibiting the same behavior as some QT files being exported from FCS 3 here in the studio, using either QT or Compressor engine. And that would be the de-interlacing artifacts on fast moving changes, as with transitions, sails flapping, flower petals falling etc.. I have not figured out why the "noise" appears yet in just certain HD projects, but what we found was that after we uploaded to youtube (and all of our stuff goes there with the rest of the garbage), that artifact went away. That was a case of "garbage in, amrita out." It also goes away (somewhat) when we burn to DVD. But the artifact only popped up after we certified FCS3 on Snow Leopard. Now everyone is shaking their heads. Perhaps this is related...

Just purchased Mac Book,   VERY  new to Mac world,   "ouch",,  I am looking to design my own website,,  is there a program built in that will allow this,  if so,, what is it called, and where can I find it???   Thanks,

There are many ways and applications that you can use to build a web site. Which will be best for you will depend on the site you want to build and your level of expertise. Many experienced web developers just use a text editor, often one with specialized features for web programming (BBEdit, for example), but there are programs that can offer additional help, up to and including "drag and drop". Without knowing more about your needs, it's difficult to offer specific advice, but here are some possibilities:
iWeb - came with your Mac. Easy to build but rather limiting in what you can do.
RapidWeaver - more flexible and capable than iWeb but harder to use; sort of an "inbetweener" application
Dreamweaver - powerful but expensive and a steep learning curve
There are of course a number of other options. If you can provide more detail about what you wish to build and your level of experience, someone can probably make more targeted recommendations.
    Regards.

  • The fan in my laptop became very noisy at minimum capacity after ins Win 8.

My laptop - HP Pavilion dv6-6b56er. After installing the Windows 8 the fan in my laptop became very noisy at minimum capacity. As far as I understand this is a common problem. I installed the latest version of HP Support Assistant and HP Support Framework, but there was an error during installation of HP Coolsense "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A programm run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor".
Sry for bad Eng, im using Google Translate.

It looks like this unit has received Windows 8 drivers.
How was the system upgraded to Windows 8?  Was it through a clean intall or an in-place upgrade?
Has all Windows 8, including switchable graphics in particular, been installed?
Here is the software page should you need it.
My notebook's fan was operating louder than usual when I upgraded to Windows 8.  This turned out to be that swtichable graphics was broken by the upgrade to Windows 8.  Effectively, both video cards were running simultaneously resulting in more heat being produced.  What resolved it for me was installing getting switchable graphics to work properly.  For me, this required a lot of work since my unit was not certified for Windows 8 and would not get any new software for Windows 8.  It's an old notebook, so this was expected.  However, your system does have a Windows 8 AMD driver for switchable graphics from HP, so I would start by making sure that specific driver is installed.

Why did my iMac fan come on very noisy after 1 hour of use ? I had to turn it off to stop it

    Just updated details - os x 10.8.5 .....
found an answer that could have been problem with CPU and a runaway application (possibly Bin Weevils) which my son was running at the time.  I shall check the activity monitor next time to see what percentage cpu is being used..

  • Mail 6.2 very sluggish in mac osx 10.8.2

mail 6.2 very sluggish in mac osx 10.8.2

For me, retrieving of email, the performance is fine.  But going through my inbox (which has less than 30 messages in it), is very sluggish.  The preview pane is active, and as I arrow up or down through messages, it can take up to 5 seconds to move from one message to another.  All gneral activity inacting with the inbox is slugghish like this, whether it's opening a message, moving from one to another, deleting a message.  I'd say this cropped up within the last 4 months or so of various updates.  I can't say specifically like "on this day when this update installed, the problem started" but I do keep all my software up to date, so it's definitely a recent one.
I have 3 POP accounts and 1 iCloud account (IMAP).  This trouble is the same regardless of which account the messages are in.

  • Camileo SX900 very noisy picture

    Hello,
    I just buyed a SX900 video camera.
All is fine, according to specs beside the fact the camera seems very noisy even on daylight on a not so very high illuminated room...
I'we used both auto ISO level or manual (like 800) with or without LED activated.
That's normal ? I mean i am very disappointed by this, because i picked the camera mostly due to fact was "advertised" as working very well even in low light environments...

    Hi
    I think this is normal.
Ive got another camcorder from another manufacturer and the picture quality is lower when the lighting conditions are not so good
But the picture quality is very good in broad daylight.
